Six U.S. Athletes Win Gold at World Masters Championships

The premier event for athletes aged 30 and over, the World Masters
Championships, was held last week in Sao Paulo Brazil with Team USA winning 16
medals, including five gold.

After moving down to the 90kg, Dennis Scheib (Atlanta, Ga. / Atlanta Judo) won
gold in the 55-59-year-old division after placing third at 100kg in the 2006
Championships in Tours, France.

Sandy North (Hollywood, Fla. / Budokan Judo) returned to the 50-54-year-old 66kg
division and won a gold medal after placing second last year.

Julian Alex Prado (Coral Springs, Fla. / Ki-Itsu-Sai) won gold in the
35-39-year-old 60kg division, repeating his title from the first Masters World
Championships five years ago in Canada.

Ferd Tihista (Watsonville, Calif. / Watsonville Judo) competed in the event’s
oldest age bracket, men’s 80+, winning an uncontested gold medal in the +100kg
division. Tihista also won gold in 2006 at 75-79 +100kg.

On the women’s side, Marisa Hernandez (Watsonville, Calif. / Watsonville Judo)
also improved her 2006 results, winning the 40-44-year-old +78kg division where
she previously placed second.

Destinee Tartuffe (Calistoga, Calif. / SRJC Judo Club) also won gold, taking the
45-49-year-old 70kg title.

Teimoc Johnston-Ono (New York City, N.Y. / NYAC), a 1976 Olympian, finished
second in the 50-54-year-old 100kg division, losing in the finals to Bosnian
Slavko Sikira.

James Haynes (Richmond, Texas / Friendswood Judo Academy) placed second in the
90kg 75-59-year-old division.

Six U.S. athletes won bronze medals in the shiai divisions, including:

* Dave Loyst (Dana Point, Calif. / Bunasawa Kai Judo Club / 50-54-year-old 81kg)
* Istvan Illes (Salem, N.H. / Pedro’s Judo Center / 55-59-year-old 81kg)

* Low Dong (Lomita, Calif. / Gardena Judo / 65-69-year-old 66kg)
* Parker Shelton (Fort Wayne, Ind. / 65-69-year-old 100kg)

In the kata division, the lone U.S. team took home three medals. Sam Mitani
(Cypress, Calif. / Bunasawa Kai Judo Club) and Brian Marks (Orange County
Kodokan) won bronze medals in the Koshiki No Kata, Joshin Jitsu and Itsusu No
Kata divisions.

Hi David, PLEASE SEND OUT THE FOLLOWING.

Lets clear any misunderstanding.

We provide one room to the club thats works the table its up to the club to
provide the one name for the room. The club has to work both days of the
tournament and be responsible for the workers of that table.

We do NOT provide a room for every worker on the club table.

We will provide to the workers whch work Friday, Saturday and Sunday or
Saturday and Sunday the following:
1. Free entrance ($8.00 each day)
2. Free Staff Shirt ($15-$20)
3. Free Lunch (15.00 for each day total $30.00)
4. Your son or daughter free camp (1) ($100.00)
5. Up and close view of the best youth athletes in North and South America along
with others from over 25 countries. (Priceless)
6. Transportation to and from the headquarters and Trader hotel to the venue at
no cost. (saving in parking and transportation)

Any rooms you book is your responsibility.
If you were unable to make reservation at the headquarters and still want to I
can still get rooms. Please advise and I will provide you with the contact
person.

Clubs which have confirmed:
1. Budokan
2. Florida School of Judo
3. West Palm Beach
4. Warriors
5. Ki-Itsu-sai

Hi everyone

WOW everyone is excited. I have received already commitments from the following
clubs to run a table, Florida School of Judo (Tampa), Warrior Judo (Fort
Lauderdale) and Budokan (Hialeah), several other have confirmed but are not
included in the club.   We still need three more tables clubs or
individuals.  Clubs which verbally have advise that they would work the table
but have not confirmed Ki-Itsu-sai, West Palm Beach, and Hashiro.  We are taking
the first to confirm via email.

Guys don't forget the coach certification its included in the application form.
Please visit the event website www.judonationals.net and obtain the application
form. Different Coaching levels will be given.

Thank You

Gerry Navarro

David, could you make this announcement at the SSG and on the web?

It saddens me to write this but I wanted to let the Judo community know of the
passing of Vera Yuschak, who was a honored member of Tsunamido and Hollywood
YMCA dojos. She was 83 years old. She passed from a heart attack, in a hospital
with her family close by her side.

Vera started Judo in the early 1960's in Pennsylvania under Dr. Ishikawa and Dr
Kowai. She was one of the first women to study at that dojo. She has been active
in Judo ever since, as well as in the gymnastics community. In her 70's she was
still taking falls and doing mat work and she used to challenge the young judoka
to keep up with her as she did cartwheels and headstands. She competed in
Ju-no-Kata in the 1997 Sr. Nationals and was the recipient of the Ted Zorsky
Memorial Kata Award in 2005. Vera was much loved and respected in our Judo
Circle and she will be sorely missed. We think she is saving a place for us on
the mat somewhere just beyond.

Godspeed Vera

The corrected/updated results for the 2007 Florida State Judo Championship can
be found online at
http://www.floridajudoinc.org/flstates2007_results.php

Some of the corrections made to the original e-mail message (original e-mail was
given at http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/Florida_Judo/message/1378 ):
1) Corrected the club for Regina Gosselin in Female, Masters +60y, 78kg to El
Mambi Judo (Sorry that was my cut/paste error from the results that I received)
2) Correction to the Male, Senior, +100kg Kyu Division
3) Addition of the Male, Masters +60y, 100kg division (missing from the original
e-mail)
4) Correction to the Novice, Male, Bantam Jr, 23kg
5) Addition of the Novice, Male, Bantam Jr, 28kg (missing from the original
e-mail)
6) Corrected the club for Bryson Labreque in Novice, Male, Bantam Jr, +28kg to
Central Florida Judo
7) Correction to the Novice, Male, Bantam Jr, +28kg Special
8) Corrected the club for Luis Gonzales in Male, Juvenile B, 66kg to West Palm
Beach Judo
9) Re-calculations for the team

The original numbers shown for the team were incorrect before any of the above
changes were made. I apologize for not checking that before sending it out in
the original e-mail.

The team competition calculations are based on 5 points for each 1st place, 3
points for each 2nd place, and 1 point for each 3rd place. The team points are
counted from all divisions including novice, non-novice, and kata (5 points for
each 1st place team).

I am sorry for any confusion that I might have caused.

I hope that this clears up any confusion.

Special Thanks to Andres Castro of Falcon Judo and Chuck Alaynick of Florida
School of Judo for the pictures of this event. I will be adding these pictures
soon to http://www.floridajudoinc.org/flstates2007_results.php .

PJU Awards Miami 2008 Olympic Zonal Qualifier
<http://www.usjudo.org/2008ZoneAnnouncement.asp>

USA Judo is pleased to announce the final qualifying tournament for the 2008
Olympic Games in Beijing will be held in Miami, Fla.

The event will be held on May 11, 2008, just two days after the close of
individual shiai competition for the 2008 Pan American Championships. Both
events will be held at James L. Knight Center in downtown Miami.

"This is an excellent opportunity to show the international judo community a
great event at first-class facilities in Miami. We have worked extensively with
the PJU in the past and are looking forward to putting on two top-notch
championship tournaments," said USA Judo President Dr. Ron Tripp. "Miami will
be a great host city both because of its central location within the region, but
also because South Florida has embraced many events of this caliber in the past
and we're looking forward to another quality tournament."

USA Judo was notified of the selection of Miami as the host city for this
premier event by Frank Fullerton, Sports Technical Director of the Pan American
Judo Union. The PJU Executive Committee made the selection during their last
meeting in April in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic.... more>

Prado Named Finalist for USOC Developmental Coach of the Year Award
<http://www.usjudo.org/PradoFinalist.asp>

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Jhonny Prado (Coral Springs, Fla.), coach of the USA
Judo National Training Site at North Miami, was named as one of five finalists
for the 2006 U.S. Olympic Committee Developmental Coach of the Year award.

Prado was nominated for the award after being named USA Judo’s Developmental
Coach of the Year.

The USOC will announce the award winner, along with the winners of the USOC
National and Volunteer Coaches of the Year and the “Doc Councilman Science
Award” recipient at a luncheon award ceremony in Washington, D.C. on Thursday.

Prado and fellow North Miami coach German Velazco (Coral Springs, Fla.) coached
the 2006 Junior World Team that was the first Junior World squad to have two
athletes fight for a medal since 1994. Together, Prado and Velazco have
produced more athletes that have achieved both junior and senior success than
any other coach in the country. Presently, the North Miami program has six
athletes ranked in the top-two nationally in their division – five of whom are
between the ages of 15 and 18-years-old. Jeanette Rodriguez (Coral Springs,
Fla. / 48kg) had one of the biggest breakout performances of the year, winning
the Senior Nationals as a 15-year-old, followed by the Senior U.S. Open later in
the year. Rodriguez also won a silver medal at the Rendez-Vous Canada and
finished fifth at the Tre-Torri International in Italy – both Senior B-Level
Tournaments. In her first Junior Worlds appearance, Rodriguez finished fifth –
the second-best performance by an American. Eighteen-year-old Bobby Lee (Coral
Springs, Fla.) also had an outstanding year, holding the No. 1 junior
ranking at 73kg while also winning the Senior U.S. Open in an upset of a
two-time Pan American Champion.

Prado also was the coach of the Pan American Junior and Juvenile Teams that won
26 medals out of 32 divisions, including seven golds. The team included many of
Prado’s own athletes who won five of the gold medals as well as two silver
medals and a bronze.

Other finalists for the award include:

John Hynes held a 41-19-0 record during the 2005-06
season with the U.S. National Under-18 Team, part of
USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program. During
the season, he led the team to second-place finishes
at both the Four Nations and Five Nations Tournaments
in Finland and Russia. He also coached the U.S.
National Under-18 Team at the IIHF World Under-18
Championship, where the United States successfully
defended its world title for the first time ever,
posting a perfect 6-0-0 record en route to the gold
medal.

Frank Madden is one of the most successful and
dedicated trainers within the ranks of the U.S.
Equestrian Federation. From his Beacon Hill Show
Stables in Colts Neck, N.J., he has trained, in
partnership with his wife Stacia, several of the most
promising junior equitation and jumper riders.
Highlights from 2006 include coaching several of
USEF's most promising young riders, including Brianne
Goutal, who earned a team gold at the Buenos Aires
Nations Cup and was named USEF Junior Equestrian of
the Year. She also was first at the Garden State
Grand Prix. In the North American Young Rider
Championships, Madden's students took the team gold
and individual silver medals. 2004 Olympic Team
Silver Medalist and 2006 World Equestrian Games Team
Silver and Individual Silver medalist, Beezie Madden,
trained with Madden earlier in her career.

Mark Mitchell and Peter Johansson currently coach at
the Skating Club of Boston in Brighton, Mass. They
have been coaching together as a team for the past 11
years. Johansson was a four-time Swedish champion, a
four time World competitor, and competed at the 1988
Olympic Winter Olympic Games. Mitchell was a United
States junior champion, U.S. Olympic Festival
champion, and twice a member of the United States
World Team. In 1995, the two joined forces and began
to rebuild the skating program at the Skating Club of
Boston. Since that time, they have coached 34
national-level skaters to 21 national medals and 13
international skaters to 22 international medals.

Bill Rose was the only USA Swimming coach to place two
athletes on the 2006 National Junior Team that
competed at the Victorian State Championships in
Melbourne, Australia. The two athletes from the
Mission Viejo Nadadores were Chad LaTourette and Scott
Sorge, and both had top-four finishes at the meet.
LaTourette won two gold medals in the 800m and 1500m
freestyles. At the USA Swimming National
Championships, nine athletes from Mission Viejo
competed at the meet. Based on their performances, two
athletes were selected to represent the United States
in international competition. Fran Crippen and
LaTourette will both compete on the 2007 World
University Games team. Rose’s athletes also had a
presence on the international scene in 2006, as
Crippen competed on the Pan Pacific Championships
team, and Justin Mortimer was selected for the Open
Water World Championships team. Crippen earned a
silver medal in the open water 10K at the Pan Pacs.
