I would like to thank everyone that made the North/Central Workout at the El
Mambi Judo Club dojo in Tampa, FL on June 2, 2007 a success! I would especially
like to THANK Sensei Del Diaz of El Mambi Judo Club for giving a GREAT
workout/clinic. I would also like to thank El Mambi Judo Club for being such a
GREAT host!

At this workout there were people from Georgia (Jesup Judo) to Miami (Falcon
Judo). The dojo was overflowing for the both the Junior Workout (11 am to 1:30
pm) and the Adult Workout (1:30 pm to ~4pm).

Yours In Judo,
David J. Ellis

PJU Awards Miami 2008 Olympic Zonal Qualifier
<http://www.usjudo.org/2008ZoneAnnouncement.asp>

USA Judo is pleased to announce the final qualifying tournament for the 2008
Olympic Games in Beijing will be held in Miami, Fla.

The event will be held on May 11, 2008, just two days after the close of
individual shiai competition for the 2008 Pan American Championships. Both
events will be held at James L. Knight Center in downtown Miami.

"This is an excellent opportunity to show the international judo community a
great event at first-class facilities in Miami. We have worked extensively with
the PJU in the past and are looking forward to putting on two top-notch
championship tournaments," said USA Judo President Dr. Ron Tripp. "Miami will
be a great host city both because of its central location within the region, but
also because South Florida has embraced many events of this caliber in the past
and we're looking forward to another quality tournament."

USA Judo was notified of the selection of Miami as the host city for this
premier event by Frank Fullerton, Sports Technical Director of the Pan American
Judo Union. The PJU Executive Committee made the selection during their last
meeting in April in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic.... more>

Breaking News:
Sole Florida entry win's Bronze. Dylan Seidle was the only player from
Florida playing in the AM-Cans in Amherst, NY this weekend. Dylan played in the
11 & 12 year old 130 pds to 175 pounds div. He had 8 player's in his division
and the competition was very good. Dylan first match was his toughest. Lost by
ippon with a minor mistake. Dylan when on to win his next three matches to place
3rd. This year they had nice two figure bronze trophies to give out to the
winner's.

Prado Named Finalist for USOC Developmental Coach of the Year Award
<http://www.usjudo.org/PradoFinalist.asp>

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Jhonny Prado (Coral Springs, Fla.), coach of the USA
Judo National Training Site at North Miami, was named as one of five finalists
for the 2006 U.S. Olympic Committee Developmental Coach of the Year award.

Prado was nominated for the award after being named USA Judo’s Developmental
Coach of the Year.

The USOC will announce the award winner, along with the winners of the USOC
National and Volunteer Coaches of the Year and the “Doc Councilman Science
Award” recipient at a luncheon award ceremony in Washington, D.C. on Thursday.

Prado and fellow North Miami coach German Velazco (Coral Springs, Fla.) coached
the 2006 Junior World Team that was the first Junior World squad to have two
athletes fight for a medal since 1994. Together, Prado and Velazco have
produced more athletes that have achieved both junior and senior success than
any other coach in the country. Presently, the North Miami program has six
athletes ranked in the top-two nationally in their division – five of whom are
between the ages of 15 and 18-years-old. Jeanette Rodriguez (Coral Springs,
Fla. / 48kg) had one of the biggest breakout performances of the year, winning
the Senior Nationals as a 15-year-old, followed by the Senior U.S. Open later in
the year. Rodriguez also won a silver medal at the Rendez-Vous Canada and
finished fifth at the Tre-Torri International in Italy – both Senior B-Level
Tournaments. In her first Junior Worlds appearance, Rodriguez finished fifth –
the second-best performance by an American. Eighteen-year-old Bobby Lee (Coral
Springs, Fla.) also had an outstanding year, holding the No. 1 junior
ranking at 73kg while also winning the Senior U.S. Open in an upset of a
two-time Pan American Champion.

Prado also was the coach of the Pan American Junior and Juvenile Teams that won
26 medals out of 32 divisions, including seven golds. The team included many of
Prado’s own athletes who won five of the gold medals as well as two silver
medals and a bronze.

Other finalists for the award include:

John Hynes held a 41-19-0 record during the 2005-06
season with the U.S. National Under-18 Team, part of
USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program. During
the season, he led the team to second-place finishes
at both the Four Nations and Five Nations Tournaments
in Finland and Russia. He also coached the U.S.
National Under-18 Team at the IIHF World Under-18
Championship, where the United States successfully
defended its world title for the first time ever,
posting a perfect 6-0-0 record en route to the gold
medal.

Frank Madden is one of the most successful and
dedicated trainers within the ranks of the U.S.
Equestrian Federation. From his Beacon Hill Show
Stables in Colts Neck, N.J., he has trained, in
partnership with his wife Stacia, several of the most
promising junior equitation and jumper riders.
Highlights from 2006 include coaching several of
USEF's most promising young riders, including Brianne
Goutal, who earned a team gold at the Buenos Aires
Nations Cup and was named USEF Junior Equestrian of
the Year. She also was first at the Garden State
Grand Prix. In the North American Young Rider
Championships, Madden's students took the team gold
and individual silver medals. 2004 Olympic Team
Silver Medalist and 2006 World Equestrian Games Team
Silver and Individual Silver medalist, Beezie Madden,
trained with Madden earlier in her career.

Mark Mitchell and Peter Johansson currently coach at
the Skating Club of Boston in Brighton, Mass. They
have been coaching together as a team for the past 11
years. Johansson was a four-time Swedish champion, a
four time World competitor, and competed at the 1988
Olympic Winter Olympic Games. Mitchell was a United
States junior champion, U.S. Olympic Festival
champion, and twice a member of the United States
World Team. In 1995, the two joined forces and began
to rebuild the skating program at the Skating Club of
Boston. Since that time, they have coached 34
national-level skaters to 21 national medals and 13
international skaters to 22 international medals.

Bill Rose was the only USA Swimming coach to place two
athletes on the 2006 National Junior Team that
competed at the Victorian State Championships in
Melbourne, Australia. The two athletes from the
Mission Viejo Nadadores were Chad LaTourette and Scott
Sorge, and both had top-four finishes at the meet.
LaTourette won two gold medals in the 800m and 1500m
freestyles. At the USA Swimming National
Championships, nine athletes from Mission Viejo
competed at the meet. Based on their performances, two
athletes were selected to represent the United States
in international competition. Fran Crippen and
LaTourette will both compete on the 2007 World
University Games team. Rose’s athletes also had a
presence on the international scene in 2006, as
Crippen competed on the Pan Pacific Championships
team, and Justin Mortimer was selected for the Open
Water World Championships team. Crippen earned a
silver medal in the open water 10K at the Pan Pacs.

2007 Senior National Championships Day 1 Results

(Miami, Fla.) – The 2007 USA Judo Senior National
Championships began on Friday with National Champions
crowned in eight weight divisions at Florida
International University.

In addition to being a National Championships, the
event also included the Trials for the Teams that will
compete at the 2007 Pan American Games, July 19-22,
and the World Championships, Sept. 16-19, both in Rio
de Janeiro, Brazil.

Senior National competition continues on Saturday with
the lightweight and Open divisions.

Rick Hawn (Wakefield, Mass. / USA Judo National Team
FORCE) was successful in his second major tournament
since moving up to 90kg in February. A 2004 Olympian
at 81kg, Hawn won the National Championships, throwing
2006 National Champion Garry St. Leger (Brooklyn, N.Y.
/ Starrett Judo) in the final and forcing St. Leger
into a best-of-three fight-off for the Pan American
Games and World Teams.

Hawn then went on to throw St. Leger in two more
matches to secure his berth on the Pan Am Games and
World Teams.

Hawn was just one of three athletes coached by
two-time Olympic medalist Jimmy Pedro (Wakefield,
Mass.) to qualify for the team.

Ronda Rousey (Wakefield, Mass. / NYAC) dominated the
70kg division in her first domestic event since moving
up from 63kg to win the Vienna World Cup in February.
Rousey threw 2006 Senior Nationals medalist Katie Sell
(Harlingen, Texas / USA Judo National Training Site at
Harlingen) for a waza-ari, moving straight into a pin
for ippon (instant win) in just over 40 seconds.

The third of Pedro’s athletes to qualify for the Team
was Asma Sharif (Wakefield, Mass.) A fifth place
finisher at this event last year, Sharif moved up to
+78kg in March.

“When I moved out to Jimmy’s my goal was to make a
team and when they first suggested moving up I was
concerned about my health. I thought they’d want to
make me gain weight and I was cautious, but they told
me I didn’t have to put on weight so I thought I’d
give it a try,” Sharif said.

“I was a little worried [about being smaller than her
opponents] but honestly, I’m used to Rick landing on
me and that hurts a whole lot more!” she laughed.

After pinning 2006 National Champion Melinda Swanson
(Honolulu, Hawaii / Hawaii Tenri) in the semifinals,
Sharif won her final match against 2005 World Team
member Heidi Moore (Englewood, Colo. / Denver Judo) by
a penalty.

As Sharif was unseeded, she then fought #1 Brittni
Bradford (Live Oak, Texas / Universal Judo) in the
Trials, throwing her for ippon with a seoi nage
(shoulder throw) in the first two minutes and then
racking up waza-ari (half-point) and koka (smallest
points) in their second Trials match before throwing
Bradford for ippon with jus over a minute remaining to
win the Trials.

“It’s going to be a lot of work when I get home, a
whole lot of training and I’m not sure what to expect,
but I know I’m not gonna rest until I go home for
Christmas!” Sharif said.

Travis Stevens (Scotia, N.Y. / USA Judo National
Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center / 81kg)
pulled a trio of upsets against top-ranked 2006 Pan Am
medalist Aaron Cohen (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / NYAC /
Cohen’s Judo). Cohen breezed through the early
rounds, but got thrown by Stevens early in the final
for a waza-ari (half-point). Stevens threw Cohen
again for what was originally called as a waza-ari,
but was later downgraded to a yuko (quarter-point) and
Cohen was unable to return the score.

In the Trials, Stevens and Cohen were tied with a
shido (penalty) a piece to send the match into Golden
Score which Cohen lost on a penalty for untying his
belt. In the second match Stevens threw Cohen with a
sumi gaeshi (sacrifice throw) for ippon.

After a disappointing +100kg semifinal loss to 2006
Senior National Champion Joel Brutus (Matawan, N.J. /
NYAC) where he got thrown for in the first 10 seconds
of the match, top-ranked Kirk Hoffmann (Colorado
Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at
the Olympic Training Center) thought to himself: “It’s
gonna be a long day.”

And he was right. Brutus would go on to win the
division while Hoffmann finished fifth, forcing a
fight-off between the two.

What neither knew, though, was that making the Pan Am
Games and World Teams would come down to a matter of
penalties.

Hoffmann won the first match three penalties to two
and the second match went to Golden Score after three
penalties were earned each. Brutus earned the first
penalty in overtime, giving Hoffmann the win and the
Team slot.

“The last couple of years, the top group of
heavyweights have all really come up in terms of
quality which I think has made us all better and
pushed us which will make the U.S. better
internationally,” Hoffmann said. “Brutus is a
seasoned vet and I used to watch him fight as a kid,
so I’m not gonna say I wasn’t worried… this morning I
just didn’t have enough ‘go juice,’ but I had a long
break and a chance to think and I found just enough to
get me going again.”

Top-ranked Adler Volmar (Coral Springs, Fla. / USA
Judo National Training Site at North Miami / 100kg)
lost his final round match to former 90kg player
Shintaro Higashi (Scarsdale, N.Y. / Kokushi) as well
as the first of their Trials matches.

Volmar was down by a penalty in the second Trials
match when Higashi was ejected from the tournament
with less than two minutes to go for attempting to
throw Volmar on the inside of his supporting leg – a
move deemed illegal with a high rate of injury.

The mistake lost Higashi the Team slot which went to
Volmar.

It was also a penalty that helped Marti Malloy (San
Jose, Calif. / USA Judo National Training Site at San
Jose State University) win the 63kg division. A
silver medalist at the Senior Nationals and U.S. Open
last year, Malloy moved up to 63kg and finally won her
first National Championship after long being
considered one of the best young players in the
country.

Malloy fought Kayla Harrison (Middletown, Ohio /
Renshuden), last year’s National Champion at 70kg, in
the finals, winning the final off a penalty scored by
Harrison in the first minute for stepping out of
bounds.

The unseeded Malloy then fought top seed Kristen Allan
(Springfield, Va. / Sport Judo) in the Trials. Malloy
had beaten Allan earlier in the day and took two more
wins to earn her first Pan Am Games and World Team
slot.

In the women’s 78kg division, second-ranked Nina
Cutro-Kelly (Schertz, Texas / Universal Judo) produced
two of the day’s biggest upsets. In the
quarter-finals, Cutro-Kelly pinned Katie Mocco
(Glenville, N.Y. / NYAC / USA Judo National Training
Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center) for waza-ari,
but received a penalty for gripping the inside of her
sleeve. Cutro-Kelly then threw Mocco again and
ultimately won the match.

In the semifinals, Cutro-Kelly pinned 2006 Senior
National Champion Nikki Kubes (Fort Worth, Texas /
Fort Worth Judo) to advance to the final against
15-year-old Marina Lambert (Chesapeake, Va. /
Washington Judo). Lambert, competing in her first
Senior Nationals and third senior tournament of any
kind, won the title, throwing Cutro-Kelly for ippon.

The following is the roster of athletes named to the
team that will compete at the Pan American Games, July
19-22, and the World Championships, Sept. 16-19, both
in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Senior Nationals Day 2 Results

(Miami, Fla.) – Saturday was a day where many veterans
defended their status in the judo scene while
up-and-comers also staked their claim as the future of
the sport at the USA Judo Senior National
Championships at Florida International University.

Also at stake were trips to the Pan American Games
(July 19-22) and World Championships (September
16-19), both in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Athletes who
entered the event as top seeds and won the Senior
Nationals automatically earned berths to the Team
while top-seeded athletes who lost during the day
competed in a best-of-three fight-off with the
division winner.

The 48kg rivalry between Sayaka Matsumoto (El Cerrito,
Calif. / NYAC / East Bay Judo Institute) and
top-ranked 16-year-old Jeanette Rodriguez (Coral
Springs, Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at
North Miami) continued into the finals of the Senior
Nationals – a rematch of last year’s final where
Rodriguez won her first title over six-time National
Champion Matsumoto.

This time both athletes started the attacks quickly
and continued at a frenetic pace for the duration of
the five minute match, but neither athlete produced a
score which sent the match into Golden Score
(overtime). Matsumoto threw Rodriguez 12 seconds into
the overtime period for a yuko (quarter-point) to win
the National Title and force a best-of-three fight-off
for the Pan Am Games and World Team slots.

“Losing the first match brought my hopes down a little
bit, but it was just a medal round and our goal was to
make sure we won the Trials, so I talked to my coach
after the match and I felt better and ready to get
back out there,” Rodriguez said.

True to form, their first Pan Am Trials went into
Golden Score as well, but Rodriguez took the win,
throwing Matsumoto for a yuko 90 seconds into the
match. The second round revolved not around scores,
but more so penalties as Matsumoto threw Rodriguez for
a waza-ari and Rodriguez was handed three penalties,
equaling a second waza-ari for Matsumoto and ending
the match.

After a brief break, Rodriguez and Matsumoto were at
it again for their fourth match in a two-hour span.
This time Matsumoto was given the first penalty which
meant a lead for Rodriguez who later threw Matsumoto
for a waza-ari (half-point) with just over a minute
remaining. Matsumoto pulled Rodriguez immediately
into an armbar, however, hoping to clinch the match,
but deftly escaped the hold. Matsumoto attacked
again, instantly throwing Rodriguez for a yuko
(quarter-point) 10 seconds later, but couldn’t earn a
large enough score in the last minute to come back.

“It was exciting to win because there was so much
nervousness, so much going on, so much pressure that
when it was all done I was really happy,” Rodriguez
said. “This summer’s the start of a new future and I’m
really looking forward to it.”

Rodriguez’s North Miami teammate Franchesca Durand
(Coral Springs, Fla. / 52kg) also found herself in the
position of fighting in the Trials. Durand, the #1 as
a 15-year-old, was upset earlier in the day in the
semifinals by Grace Ohashi (Colorado Springs, Colo. /
USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic
Training Center). Ohashi threw Durand for a yuko
early in the match to advance to the finals where she
was beaten on points by four-time National Champion
Carrie Chandler (Glenville, N.Y. / NYAC / USA Judo
National Training Site).

In the Trials, Durand and Chandler’s first match went
to Golden Score and after a second five-minute period,
the match was left to the referees’ decision who
awarded the win to a more aggressive Durand.

The second match for the two started off slowly with
both athletes penalized for non-combattivity in the
first minute. Durand picked up two yuko scores as
well as a penalty committed by Chandler all within the
next two minutes.

At the end of the match, Chandler again increased the
pace significantly and Durand received a penalty of
her own, but both athletes were determined to end the
match big and Durand threw Chandler for ippon (instant
win) with 10 seconds remaining in the match.

“I was so excited by the end, just like I was at the
British [where she beat Chandler for the first time in
January,]” Durand said. “I know a lot of people said
when I won the British that it was just luck and I
wanted to win again to show that I wasn’t just lucky
last time.”

Like Rodriguez’s matches, the close-by crowd was
raucous throughout Durand’s Trials.

“It’s kind of funny because it gets so loud sometimes
that you can’t even hear your coach,” Durand said.
It’s awesome, though, especially when you’re winning
and you know the crowd really gets you going even
more.”

The third Trial of the day was between Taraje
Williams-Murray (Bronx, N.Y. / NYAC / Spartak Sports
Club), the 2004 Olympian at the weight who fought 66kg
in 2006, and top-seeded Jean-Pierre Durand (Coral
Springs, Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at
North Miami).

Earlier in the evening, Williams-Murray threw Nick
Kossor (Glenville, N.Y. / USA Judo National Training
Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center) for a waza-ari
two minutes into their final match. Williams-Murray
was given a shido (penalty) for stepping out, but
caught Kossor again with a throw for a yuko score at
the end of the match.

In the Trials, Williams-Murray threw Durand for ippon
in the first minute of the match and then armbarred
Durand to win the second a slot on the World and Pan
Am Games Teams. This will be the second World
Championships for Williams-Murray who placed ninth at
the 2005 Worlds.

Four top seeds successfully earned trips to the Pan Am
Games and Worlds as #1 seeded players who also won the
Senior Nationals. All four also were on the 2005 Team
with Williams-Murray.

Justin Flores (Glenville, N.Y. / USA Judo National
Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center / San
Shi) won the 66kg division in a final against 2006 Pan
Am Championships fifth-place finisher Taylor Takata
(Harlingen, Texas / USA Judo National Training Site).

Takata advanced to the semifinals after beating #2
Kenny Hashimoto (Thornton, Colo. / Northglenn Judo)
off a stepping out penalty in the semifinals.

Penalties would haunt Takata throughout his match with
Flores which he lost on a total of three penalties,
including two committed in the first minute.

Ryan Reser (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo
National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center)
won his second consecutive 73kg National title with a
win over 2006 Junior World Team member Nick Delpopolo
(Glenville, N.Y. / NYAC / USA Judo National Training
Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center). Ryan threw
Delpopolo first with a drop seoi nage (dropping
shoulder throw) for a yuko score. Delpopolo and Reser
each earned penalties, but Reser won the match with a
waza-ari (half-point) in the last minute.

Valerie Gotay (Harlingen, Texas / USA Judo National
Training Site at Harlingen) fought 2006 Junior World
Team member Hannah Martin (Burnt Hills, N.Y. / USA
Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo
Center) in the 57kg final. Up by a penalty committed
by Martin, Gotay scored a waza-ari with one minute, 30
seconds remaining in the match.

Not one to rest on a lead, Gotay continued to attack,
throwing Martin with a tomoe nage (circle sacrifice
throw) for a yuko score in the last 15 seconds.

Heidi Moore (Englewood, Colo. / Denver Judo) also will
compete on her second World Team, winning the Open
weight division in a final where she pinned
16-year-old Emily Lilly (Camarillo, Calif. /
Sawtelle).

Djamal Aliev (Greenwood Village, Colo. / USA Judo
National Training Site at the Olympic Training
Center), also won the ability to compete at the World
Championships in the Open division. Aliev also fought
at the 2005 Worlds in the 100kg division. In the
final, Aliev beat Sylwester Gawel (POL), coming back
from being down by a yuko to instantly throw Gawel for
ippon and the match. Although Adler Volmar (Coral
Springs, Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at
North Miami) was the #1 seed, Volmar declined the
fight-off as he will be participating in the Pan Am
Games and Worlds in the 100kg division.

Moore and Aliev will both be eligible to compete in
the World Championships, but not the Pan American
Games as the Open division is not contested a that
event.

Hiram Cruz (Jacksonville, Fla. / RYU Jacksonville
Judo) won his second consecutive National title in the
55kg division, throwing 15-year-old Kyle Taketa
(Torrance, Calif. / Gardena) with a sumi gaeshi
(sacrifice throw) for a koka (smallest points) before
armbarring Taketa for ippon (instant win) in the final
minute.

Taylor Ibera (Honolulu, Hawaii / Hawaii Tenri) won the
women’s 44kg division, going undefeated in a
round-robin division that included 2006 Pan Am Team
member Veronica Prado (Coral Springs, Fla. / USA Judo
National Training Site at North Miami) and top-ranked
Alexa Liddie (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo

Hi, this is Gail Stolzenburg -

I would appreciate your passing the word that the 2007 Senior Nationals being
held in Miami, FL this weekend will be webcast at no charge. Here is the
announcement from USA Judo.

April 16, 2007

Senior Nationals and World / Pan Am Games Team Trials to be Held April 20-21 in
Miami

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) - The USA Judo Senior National Championships will be
held April 20-21 at the Pharmed Arena at Florida International University in
Miami, Fla.

The Senior Nationals will be attended by nearly all of the top candidates for
the 2008 Olympic Team. The event also will include the Trials for the team that
will compete at the 2007 Pan American Games, July 19-22, and the 2007 World
Championships, September 16-19. Both the Pan Am Games and World Championships
will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with the Pan Am Games serving as 33% of
the qualifying process for the 2008 Olympic Games.

For the first time ever, the gold medal finals as well as the Pan Am Games and
World Team Trials will be Webcast live for free at www.livesportsvideo.com
beginning at 6 p.m. EST on Friday and 5 p.m. EST on Saturday.

Following the conclusion of each day's Senior Nationals finals, in divisions in
which the #1-ranked athlete at the start of the tournament does not win the
Senior Nationals, a best-of-three fight-off will be held between that athlete
and the Senior National Champion to determine athlete selection for the Pan Am
Games and World Teams.

In addition, also at stake are berths on the team that will compete at the 2007
Pan Am Championships, May 24-28 in Montreal. The athletes with the highest U.S.
ranking at the conclusion of the Senior Nationals will be named to the 2007 Pan
Am Championships - also a qualifying event for the 2008 Olympic Games.

On April 20, the National Championships also will be held for the kata (forms)
divisions, beginning at 1 p.m. while the International Masters Championships
will be held on April 21, beginning at 1 p.m.

Competition schedule is as follows:

Friday April 20

9 a.m. - Preliminary Rounds (Women's 63kg, 70kg, 78kg, +78kg and Men's 81kg,
90kg, 100kg and +100kg)

1 p.m. - Kata (Forms) National Championships

6 p.m. - Gold Medal Finals*

* The Pan Am Games and World Team Trials will take place immediately following
the Gold Medal Finals.

Saturday April 21

9 a.m. - Preliminary Rounds (Women's 44kg, 48kg, 52kg, 57kg and Open and Men's
55kg, 60kg, 66kg and 73kg)

1 p.m. - International Masters Championships

5 p.m. - Gold Medal Finals*

* The Pan Am Games and World Team Trials will take place immediately following
the Gold Medal Finals.

The following are the athletes who are expected to enter the Senior Nationals as
the top seeds. A detailed preview of the divisions will be available later this
week.

* Alexa Liddie (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the
Olympic Training Center / 44kg) Sixteen-year-old Liddie, the daughter of 1984
Olympic medalist and three-time Olympic Coach Eddie Liddie, won a bronze medal
at her first Senior Nationals in 2006. After defeating 2006 Senior National
Champion Daimisy Porras (Coral Springs, Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site
at North Miami / 44kg) at the Rendez-Vous Canada International, Liddie moved
into the #1 ranking in the division while Porras has since moved up to 48kg.
NOTE: 44kg, a non-Olympic weight division, is only contested at the Pan Am
Championships, not the Pan Am Games or World Championships.

* Jeanette Rodriguez (Coral Springs, Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at
North Miami / 48kg) The 16-year-old turned heads when she won the 2006 Senior
Nationals, upsetting six-time reigning National Champion Sayaka Matsumoto (El
Cerrito, Calif. / NYAC / East Bay Judo Institute). This time, Rodriguez is the
favorite as the #1 seed. During their last match-up, Rodriguez defeated
Matsumoto at the U.S. Open in October, also at FIU.

* Franchesca Durand (Coral Springs, Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at
North Miami / 52kg) Fifteen-year-old Durand will be on the hunt for her first
National title. Durand overtook the #1 ranking in the division in January when
she upset four-time National Champion Carrie Chandler (Glenville, N.Y. / USA
Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center) at the British Open
in January.

* Valerie Gotay (Harlingen, Texas / USA Judo National Training Site at Harlingen
/ 57kg) Gotay is a 1992 Olympian who retired at age 18 only to come back to the
sport in 2004. Now 33, Gotay has gone undefeated in the United States since
2005 and is coming off of one of the best seasons for an American on the
European Tour where she beat former World Champion Yurisleidys Lupetey (CUB).

* Kristen Allan (Springfield, Va. / Sport Judo / 63kg) Allan, a silver medalist
at the 2006 Senior Nationals, will be the top seed in Miami as #1 Ronda Rousey
(Wakefield, Mass. / USA Judo National Team FORCE) has since moved up to 70kg.
Allan, who won her first European medal in November at the Finnish Open, has
been training in Brazil, one of the top judo nations in the world, and could
come back with some surprises for her competitors.

* Ronda Rousey (Wakefield, Mass. / USA Judo National Team FORCE / 70kg) Rousey
earned her #1 ranking in the division after winning the Vienna World Cup in
February - her first international event at 70kg. A 2004 Olympian and Junior
World Champion, 20-year-old Rousey has never lost to an American at any level of
competition.

* Marina Lambert (Chesapeake, Va. / Washington Judo / 78kg) One of the youngest
athletes at Senior Nationals, Lambert, who just turned 15, moved up to the #1
ranking in the division in October when she won a bronze medal at the U.S. Open
- her second senior tournament ever. A top junior player, Lambert will be
challenged by several World, Pan Am and Olympic Team member veterans.

* Brittni Bradford (Live Oak, Texas / Universal Judo / 78kg) A 2006 Junior World
Team member, Bradford finished second at last year's Senior Nationals and third
at the U.S. Open

* Kayla Harrison (Middletown, Ohio / Renshuden / Open) A National Champion at
70kg last year, this 16-year-old also won the 2006 U.S. Open in the open weight
division. NOTE: Open, a non-Olympic weight division, is only contested at the
Pan Am and World Championships, not the Pan Am Games.

* Frank Sanchez (West Covina, Calif. / Guerreros / 55kg) Sanchez will attempt to
improve on his bronze medal finish at the 2006 Senior Nationals. NOTE: 55kg, a
non-Olympic weight division, is only contested at the Pan Am Championships, not
the Pan Am Games or World Championships.

* Jean-Pierre Durand (Coral Springs, Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at
North Miami / 60kg) The older brother of Franchesca, Durand should enter the
Senior Nationals as the top seed in the division after winning a bronze medal at
the 2006 U.S. Open - the highest finish for an American in the division.

* Justin Flores (Glenville, N.Y. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason
Morris Judo Center / San Shi / 66kg) A 2005 World Team member, Flores returned
to the #1 ranking two weeks ago after winning the Puerto Rico Open. After
winning bronze at the British Open and placing fifth at the Warsaw World Cup
earlier this season, Flores is on the hunt for his first National title since
2005 after pulling out with injuries at least year's event.

* Ryan Reser (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the
Olympic Training Center / 73kg) Just in the nick of time, this three-time World
Cup medalist won a silver over the weekend at the Swiss Open to regain his #1
status after a three-week dip to #2.

* Aaron Cohen (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Cohen's Judo / 81kg) The division's
reigning National Champion, Cohen also medaled in Switzerland over the weekend,
going 5-1 to win the silver.

* Garry St. Leger (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Starrett Judo / 90kg) A three-time medalist
at B-Level tournaments in 2006, St. Leger is the most consistent player in the
division, but hasn't been seen in competition since sustaining an injury in
Europe in February.

* Adler Volmar (Coral Springs, Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at North
Miami / 100kg and Open) A 1996 Olympian for Haiti, this dual citizen's goal is
to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team in 2008. Volmar is the top-ranked athlete
in both the 100kg and Open divisions, although the Open division will only be
contested at the World and Pan Am Championships, not the Pan Am Games.

* Kirk Hoffmann (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at
the Olympic Training Center / +100kg) A former World and Pan Am Team member,
Hoffmann lost in the finals of the Senior Nationals last year to Joel Brutus
(Matawan, N.J. / NYAC), a former Pan Am medalist for Haiti who recently received
clearance to fight for the United States. Hoffmann and Brutus fought at the New
York Open in March with Hoffmann taking the win.
