2006 Fall Classic Nationals Results

(Harlingen, Texas) – Saturday’s action at the Fall
Classic Nationals featured excellent judo from some of
the top-ranked players in the country as well as
close-call matches and comeback stories.

Justin Flores (Palo Alto, Calif. / San Shi Judo Club)
was the top-ranked player in the United States in 2005
in the 66kg division. A National Champion who had
placed in the top five on the European Tour, the
25-year-old took a break from competition after the
World Championships in September and didn’t resurface
again until the Senior Nationals in April.

Although the self-imposed break caused his #1 ranking
to drop, Flores was considered a favorite to reclaim
his title at the Senior Nationals – until an injured
knee in an early match shut him out of the competition
entirely.

Earlier this week Flores returned to competition,
easily winning the Golden State Open at 73kg on Sunday
before coming down to Harlingen to compete in the
heavier division.

“I’ve only competed a handful of times since Worlds
and so I just wanted to start getting some matches in
without having to worry about cutting weight,” Flores
said. “I’m going back to 66kg for the Rendez-Vous and
U.S. Open, so I wanted to get some fights in, but not
worry about winning or losing, just going out and
doing judo.”

With no expectations or pressure to be had, Flores
went undefeated, winning five matches and the gold
medal.

Unprotected by seeding, Flores had a difficult half of
the draw, meeting Junior World Team member and New
York Open bronze medalist Nick Delpopolo (Scotia, N.Y.
/ Jason Morris Judo Center) in the second round.

Flores came out fast, throwing Delpopolo in the first
15 seconds of the match for a yuko score
(quarter-point). Although Delpopolo tried to pick up
a score of his own, he never managed to produce one
and Flores took the match.

In his next match, Flores and 17-year-old Senior
Nationals bronze medalist Bobby Lee (Lauderhill, Fla.
/ North Miami USA Judo National Training Site) were
evenly matched until the final 30 seconds when Flores
threw Lee with a low, rolling kata guruma (fireman’s
carry).

No score was called and the clock continued to wear
down until Flores repeated the same throw with 12
seconds left.

“The first time I did it, maybe the throw was too
slow, but when I did it again, I think I sealed the
deal.”

With just over a minute remaining in his next match
with Senior Nationals silver medalist Radu Brestyan
(Medway, Mass. / Pedro’s Judo Center), the score was
tied at a yuko (quarter-point) a piece after, Brestyan
was handed a pair of shidos.

In the final minute, Flores threw Brestyan with an
uchimata (inner thigh throw) for ippon (instant win)
and the match.

Brestyan subsequently withdrew from the remainder of
the tournament with an injury and would finish third.

Meanwhile, Lee fought through the loser’s pool where
he and Delpopolo would compete to fight Flores for
gold.

Like their last matchup at the Junior U.S. Open final
a month ago, neither athlete scored during the match
with both attacking consistently to avoid penalties.
Less than 30 seconds into the overtime session, Lee
caught Delpopolo in the corner with a throw for ippon.

The Golden Score (overtime) session was brought back
again half an hour later when Flores and Lee fought
for gold. With neither scoring during the regulation
period, Flores threw Lee for ippon more than two
minutes into overtime to win the match and the
division.

“I had to move a lot more [in the 73kg division]. I
had to find a lot more angles and fight a much more
technical match and just kept coming at them and I
could feel them all start to diminish slowly during
the match,” Flores said. “I used everything I had and
threw it all out there.”

Flores hopes to finish his undergraduate degree in the
next semester and then focus on judo until the Beijing
Olympic Games in 2008.

“I’m really excited to be able to work on doing judo
full-time and focus on training my hardest for the
next two years,” Flores said.

Men’s heavyweight Anthony Turner (Miami, Fla. /
IntoCombat) had a difficult serious of competitors,
but dominated his division, winning each of four
matches by ippon, including a defeat over #1 Daniel
McCormick (Arlington, Texas / Bedford Kodokan Judo
Club) and two wins against Kirk Hoffmann (Colorado
Springs, Colo. / Olympic Training Center USA Judo
National Training Site).

Saturday’s win will move Turner into the #1 Senior
Elite National ranking in the division, while 2005
National Champion Hoffmann will move to #2 and
McCormick will fall to #3.

At 45-years-old, two-time Olympian Rene Capo (Ballston
Lake, N.Y. / Jason Morris Judo Center) was the oldest
competitor of the tournament, but made a striking
comeback Saturday, winning a silver medal in the 100kg
division.

Capo came in unseeded, but fought his way through the
division for a three-match final with 1996 Hatian
Olympian and 2006 Senior Nationals bronze medalist
Adler Volmar (Miami, Fla. / North Miami USA Judo
National Training Site). The two split the first two
matches. Although Capo sustained an injury during his
win in the second match over Volmar, he continued to
compete in the third match, but ultimately tapped out
and settled for the silver medal.

In the men’s 66kg division, hometown favorite and
Hawaii native Taylor Takata (Harlingen, Texas /
Harlingen USA Judo National Training Site) quickly
found himself fighting a lineup of National and
international medalists in rapid succession.

First up was Jeremy Liggett (Scotia, N.Y. / NYAC /
Jason Morris Judo Center), a Pan American silver
medalist and Junior World Team member at 60kg who was
fighting up this weekend.

After picking up an early koka (smallest points), the
score became tied when Takata was handed a penalty
just under two minutes into the match. Takata quickly
became the aggressor, though and threw Liggett for
ippon on the next attack.

Liggett subsequently lost his next match to his JMJC
teammate AJ Silverman (Scotia, N.Y.) and was
eliminated from the tournament.

Next up, Takata drew Nate Torra (El Cerrito, Calif. /
East Bay Judo Institute) for a reprise of their final
from the Senior Nationals in April. Following a close
match in which the score was tied after Takata was
given two shidos, Takata won the match to advance to
the final where he subsequently threw his former
Olympic Training Center teammate Josh O’Neil (Colorado
Springs, Colo.) for ippon.

O’Neil then moved down to the loser’s bracket to fight
second-ranked Kenny Hashimoto (Thornton, Colo. /
Northglenn Judo Club) for the second time. Previously
O’Neil had beaten Hashimoto in an earlier round, but
with the scored tied, Hashimoto threw O’Neil for a
yuko with 21 seconds on the clock to guarantee the
match.

After battling through the day’s toughest division,
Takata still had enough energy for a five-minute match
with Hashimoto, winning the gold by two yukos.

National Champion Valerie Gotay (57kg) also competed
this weekend for the Harlingen USA Judo Training Site
after moving to South Texas from Temecula, Calif.
several weeks ago.

Gotay won each of her first three matches through
groundwork, including wins over Nicki Schultheis
(Gurnee, Ill. / Gurnee Judo), the #2-ranked junior at
52kg and Senior Nationals bronze medalist Ashlie
Martini (Chicago, Ill. / Tohkon).

Gotay and Martini met again for a second time in the
finals where she threw the former 63kg player with an
o soto gari (major outer reaping) for ippon and the
gold medal.

“I really enjoy fighting on the ground, but Israel
[Hernandez, Harlingen Head Coach and two-time Olympic
medalist] and I have been working on my stand-up judo
and we really wanted to finish that last match with a
throw.”

Gotay, a 1992 Olympian, just completed her relocation
to Harlingen a week ago where she trains under
Hernandez and alongside Takata and sister Natalie
Lafon, the #2-ranked athlete at 52kg.

“Israel is the full package. I’ve never met a coach
like him. He’s educated in every way: training,
athletics, psychology, strength and conditioning,
everything,” Gotay said. “I’ve only been here a short
while, but I’m looking forward to how I’m going to
improve because my judo is only going to go up from
here.”

In the women’s 52kg division, reigning National
Champion Carrie Chandler (Scotia, N.Y. / NYAC / Jason
Morris Judo Center) was the favorite coming into the
event and led by a koka early in her first match
against 2004 Junior World Team member Anna Palmer
(Colorado Springs, Colo. / Olympic Training Center USA
Judo National Training Site).

Palmer, however, was in the middle of sankaku
(triangle hold) when Chandler sustained an injury.
The 2005 Pan American gold medalist opted to continue
the match and threw Palmer for ippon before
withdrawing from the tournament.

Palmer would go on to win over Senior Nationals silver
medalist to advance to the final match against Senior
Nationals bronze medalist Franchesca Durand (Coral
Springs, Fla. / North Miami USA Judo National Training
Site).

The two looked to be headed to Golden Score when
Palmer attempted a double leg takeout, only to be
caught be Durand and thrown at the buzzer.

In the women’s 48kg division, Sayaka Matsumoto (El
Cerrito, Calif. / NYAC / East Bay Judo Institute)
revisited her finals match with Jeanette Rodriguez
(Margate, Fla. / North Miami USA Judo National
Training Site) from the Senior National Championships
during the Fall Classic finals.

This time Matsumoto dominating the match, choking the
16-year-old to end the match and send Rodriguez down
to the loser’s bracket in the true-double elimination
tournament.

Earlier in the day, Rodriguez fought Senior Nationals
bronze medalist Ann Shiraishi (El Cerrito, Calif. /
East Bay Judo Institute) in a 10-minute Golden Score
epic match that ended in a decision by flags for
Rodriguez.

In the loser's bracket, however, Shiraishi got the
win, pinning the Junior World Team member.

Rodriguez finished third while Matsumoto pinned
Shiraishi in the gold medal match to win the division.

Also on the women’s side, Athens Olympian Ronda Rousey
(Santa Monica, Calif. / NYAC) routed each of her three
opponents by ippon, including defeats of 2006 Senior
Nationals silver medalist Kristen Allan (Springfield,
Va. / Sport Judo) and a four-second dispatch of
Christine Ellis (Westfield, N.J. / Cranford).

David, Please post to your Yahoo Judo Group.
___________________________________________

Why should I work at the US Open?

1. Because we need you. USA Judo has asked us to provide 60 technical
officials/table workers (6 mats Xs 10 persons = 60) per day (Oct 20-22, 2006,
Friday-Sunday)

2. Because you love judo, or you wouldn't even be on this mailing list!

3. Because this is the United States of America's premier International Judo
Event AND it's in your backyard (no plane ticket required to see this ELITE
JUDO).

4. Because you love judo, or you wouldn't even be on this mailing list!

5. Because you're going to be there anyway, so get the BEST seat in the house -
at the table!

6. Because you love judo, or you wouldn't even be on this mailing list!

7. Because we are going to give you a really cool shirt and a delicious,
mouth-watering lunch.

8. Because you love judo, or you wouldn't even be on this mailing list!

9. Because you're proud and want the country and the world to know FLORIDA DOES
JUDO.

10. Because you love judo, or you wouldn't even be on this mailing list!

Now, I know a lot of you would like to help - but maybe are a little shy?????
BECAUSE YOU DON'T HAVE EXPERIENCE? I have suggested a solution . . . Let's get
together for a little training clinic to make everybody more confident. It
would be hosted by David Ellis and myself (with special guest - 2006 Tai Yosheda
Award winner, Rachel New - - - maybe we can get her to cook something yummy
too!). I have 2 individuals interested already. If we can get 10 more
interested people, we will go ahead with it the first or second week of October
- just in time for THE BIG SHOW! I am excited and I think everyone in
this state should be too!

PLEASE LET DAVID KNOW ASAP.

Thank you,
Michael New

USA Judo Staff Named for Junior World Championship Team

USA Judo is pleased to name Jhonny Prado (Coral Springs, Fla.) as the head coach
for the team that will compete at the Junior World Championships, Oct. 12-15 in
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Prado is joined by assistant coach German Velazco (Coral Springs, Fla.)
considered to be two of the premier junior coaches in the United States, Prado
and Velazco, a 2000 Olympian for Peru, coached both the 2005 Pan American
Infantile (11-14-year-olds) Team and the 2006 Pan American Junior
(15-19-year-olds) Team.

"I'm very excited to work with all of these athletes. Most of this team is new
to the Junior Worlds, but they're all training hard and I think this group has
the potential to perform very well in Santo Domingo," Prado said.

Prado and Velazco, both head coaches at the North Miami USA Judo National
Training Site, are the personal coaches for two of the Junior World Team members
- Jeanette Rodriguez (Margate, Fla. / 48kg) and Franchesca Durand (Coral
Springs, Fla. / 52kg).

"I would like to congratulate the 'USA Judo North Miami Training Site Dynamic
Duo' of Jhonny Prado and German Velazco on their prestigious appointment as head
coaches for our Junior World Championships team," said USA Judo CEO Jose H.
Rodriguez (Colorado Springs, Colo.) "I think Jhonny and German both depict the
sort of talent that we have in this nation with our coaches."

The pair, who will be coaching their first Junior World Team, led Team USA to 25
medals at the Pan Am Infantile Championships and 28 medals at the Pan Am
Juniors. In addition to Rodriguez and Durand, Prado and Velazco have at least
seven other athletes ranked in the top five of their respective IJF-Junior
(under 20) divisions.

"I have no doubt that if we can continue to financially support our coaches who
are producing top-level athletes that we will become the powerhouse that
everyone talks about," Rodriguez said. "It is my hope that these two coaches'
success becomes a motivating factor for other coaches to work hard to meet and
exceed their success. There is indeed a great future for judo in the USA thanks
to our coaches!"

Humberto Lopez (Miami, Fla.) will be the Team Manager for the trip. Lopez
served on the staff for the 2004 Junior World Team and also was the manager for
the 2005 Senior World Team.

If credentials are available, each club that has an athlete represented will be
allowed to request a maximum of one personal coach. Additional information will
be disseminated after credential numbers have been finalized by the tournament
organizers.

Athletes were invited to the Junior World Trials
based upon their status on the IJF-Junior (athletes
born 1987 or later) rosters. Athletes are ranked
throughout the year and receive points for placings
in domestic and international events.

At the Trials, the #1 and #4 seeds competed,
followed by the #2 and #3 seeds. The winners of
these matches then fought. If the #1 seed won, he or
she was named to the team. If the #1 seed was not
the winner of the Trials, he or she fought the Trials
winner in a sudden-death contest. The winner of that
match was then named to the team.
"This was one of our most exciting events of the
year so far," said USA Judo Director of Athlete
Performance Eddie Liddie (Colorado Springs, Colo.
"These athletes had a chance to experience a Trials
situation that is similar to what they would face to
qualify for an Olympic or World Championship Team and
so they got to see what that pressure is like
and it should prepare them well down the road."

The Trials featured 49 participants from clubs
throughout the country with athletes ranging in age
from 14-19-years-old. Competitors included Olympic,
World, Pan American and Junior Pan American Team
members as well as athletes who used this event to
qualify for their first international team.

"ll of the athletes here were excellent competitors,"
aid Jim Hrbek (San Antonio, Texas), Chair of Junior
Development.

"This has been one of the most talked about events in
a long time and these athletes all did a great job,
through both their own hard work as well as the
effort of all of the clubs, parents and coaches who
helped get them to this level. Our junior program
is showing a great deal of depth across the
divisions and these athletes will represent the United
States well in Santo Domingo."

Jeremy Liggett (Scotia, N.Y./NYAC/Jason Morris Judo
Center) may not have won his slot on the team with his
trademark "pretty judo," but the top seed at
60kg only needed two wins to get the job done,
defeating Aaron Kunihiro (Covina, Calif./San Gabriel
Judo) and Rafael Ramos (Union City, N.J./North Miami
USA Judo National Training Site) by shidos
(penalties) in the first and second round,
respectively.

Meanwhile, Liggett's JMJC teammates AJ Silverman
(Scotia, N.Y./66kg) and Nick Delpopolo (Glenville,
N.Y./73kg) both found themselves in controversial
match-ups.

Top-ranked Silverman likely had the toughest first
round of the day, facing Francisco Alejandro (North
Lauderdale, Fla./North Miami USA Judo National
Training Site). As of Saturday, Silverman had yet
to beat the former #1 in any of their match-ups, but
Alejandro had moved to the Dominican Republic to
go to college for the year and his ranking fell to
fourth for what otherwise would likely have been a
final round fight.

With both athletes drawing penalties, Silverman
looked to close out the match with a choke, but
Alejandro escaped and the fight went into Golden
Score (overtime).

Knowing that neither could afford another stalling
penalty, the two athletes began attacking quickly into
the Golden Score session and Alejandro sent Silverman
soaring with a beautiful o uchi gari (major inner
reaping throw) for what looked like an ippon.

"My heart just sank," Silverman said of his thoughts
when he hit the ground. “But then they called "matte
(stop)" and I knew I still had a chance."

He quickly capitalized as the throw was called out
of bounds, pinning Alejandro within the minute for the
win.

Looking to avoid seeing himself in that situation
again, Silverman quickly avenged his loss at the High
School Nationals in March to Ross Nakamura (Mission
Hills, Calif./Valley View Judo Institute), pinning
Nakamura in the opening 30 seconds of the match.

Meanwhile, on the next mat, Delpopolo was having
surprising problems at 73kg with his first opponent #3
Danny Satinsky (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Cohen's Judo
Club).

Neither athlete could manage to score and the match
went into Golden Score with Delpopolo winning on a
penalty not quite what was expected, but good
enough to carry him into the final round against
Bobby Lee (Lauderhill, Fla./North Miami USA Judo
National Training Site).

"I just couldn't get my focus in the first one
and knew I had to get it together with Bobby,"
Delpopolo said.

Lee and Delpopolo were likely the biggest rivalry
of the day as Lee came in as both the #1 seed who had
been undefeated in U.S. junior competition in 2005 and
a slight underdog as he had lost his only two matches
against Delpopolo including a final round at last
week's U.S. Judo Federation Junior Nationals, held at
this same venue.

Lee began the match as the clear aggressor, coming
out strong with quick attacks. Delpopolo earned the
first points though, countering one of Lee's
throws for uchimata (inner thigh throw) to earn a
koka (smallest points).

From there the match came down to the all-important
question of "who could score the least amount of
penalties."

Both athletes picked up a penalty mid-match, but
Delpopolo scored again with a throw for yuko
(quarter-point). The New Yorker was handed another
penalty for stalling late in the match, but still
pulled out the overall win.

Fifteen minutes later the two reconvened for a
second match and both picked up early shidos with each
penalty earned by one meaning a score for his
opponent.

Delpopolo then threw Lee for a yuko for the first
active score of the match.

"Because he's so much taller, it's really hard for
either of us to have big throws, so the goal for both
of us was to make the other one look as bad as
possible," Delpopolo said.

As the match neared an end, Lee succeeded in that
goal, picking up the pacing and forcing Delpopolo into
another penalty, but Lee still needed another
score to either tie or win the fight.

With four seconds on the clock, Delpopolo dodged
Lee's last attack and when the buzzer went off, the
Pro-Lee hometown crowd roared "Shido! Shido!" calling
for a penalty on Delpopolo that would send the
match into Golden Score.

Never during the day was the convention center hall
as completely silent as when the referee stood in the
match for seemingly an eternity before telling
Delpopolo to fix his belt. Another 10 seconds as
he did so before the match was called in Delpopolo's
favor and the 17-year-old walked off the mat, too
tired to even crack a smile.

"This was really the biggest day of my entire
life and I was just so relieved to be done with it
all," he said.

This is the first Junior World Team for Delpopolo
who just returned to the sport in September following
the reconstruction of a knee blown out by wrestling.
"I did judo in junior high at Jason's club, but
when I got to high school we moved to Westfield, N.J.
so I could go to a Catholic school with a really
good wrestling program," he said.

At the end of his sophomore season, though,
Delpopolo had not only destroyed his knee with a torn
ACL, LCL and meniscus, but he found he no longer
enjoyed the sport and opted to leave his family and
move back to Scotia to train with Morris in the sport
he loved.

The move clearly paid off as Delpopolo will be one
of the top athletes to watch in Santo Domingo.

At 81kg, Yuko Sin (Scotia, N.Y./Jason Morris Judo
Center) had a significantly easier road to his Junior
World Team berth, throwing Wesley Thomas (San
Mateo, Calif./Palo Alto Judo) for ippon in the first
minute and pinning Carlos Moran (Clifton, N.J./Camal
Judo) in the second round for the overall win.

Jacob Larsen (Santa Rosa, Calif./Redwood Coast
Judo) came into Trials as a #2 seed with only a point
separating him from top-ranked Kyle Vashkulat
(Scotia, N.Y./Jason Morris Judo Center) who he had
beaten at the USJF event last week.

Larsen, who won each of the three junior national
championships this season, beat High School Champion
Steve Fayzakov (Fresh Meadows, N.Y./Spartak Sports
Club) in the first round. In the second, he threw
Vashkulat with a quick drop seoi nage (shoulder
throw) to force a fight-off.

In their second match, Larsen prevailed again,
launching Vashkulat with a huge o goshi (hip throw)
for the win.

In the 100kg division, Tony Sangimino (Burligame,
Calif./Cahill's Judo Academy) seemed to have his
division locked up, throwing Mike Kannianen (Denver,
Colo./Northglenn, Colo.) for ippon in the first
minute - an important win as Kannianen had beaten
Sangimino twice in his own backyard at the USA Judo
Junior Olympics (July 8-9 in San Jose, Calif.)

In the second round Sangimino was ahead in his
match against Zane Malloy (Oak Harbor, Wash./NAS
Whidbey Island Judo), but got thrown for ippon. In
the play-off match Malloy would throw Sangimino
again to earn his first World Team nomination.

In the heavyweight division, top-ranked Zachary
Bell (Naperville, Ill./Fox Valley Judo & Jujitsu)
went 0-2 after a first round bye, getting thrown
twice for ippon (instant win) by Aaron Shiosaki
(Lomita, Calif./Gardena) who would win his first World
Team slot.

On the women's side, top-ranked Jeanette Rodriguez
(Margate, Fla./North Miami USA Judo National Training
Site) won both of her matches by ippon, throwing her
North Miami teammate Daimisy Porras (Hialeah, Fla.)
with an o soto gari (major outer reaping). In her
next match, Rodriguez threw #2-ranked Brenna
Clark (Hercules, Calif./Okubu/APOA Judo Club) with
a fireman's carry to qualify for her first Junior
World Team.

At 52kg, picked up a win in her first round against
Tara Clark (Hercules, Calif./Okubu/APOA Judo Club) who
dropped from her current division of 57kg this week to
fight at the Trials.

In the second round, Durand fought #2 Nicki
Schultheis (Gurnee, Ill./Gurnee Judo). The two are
frequent final round competitors, but Schultheis, a
silver medalist at the Pan Am Juniors in April,
hadn't posted a win in the rivalry since last year's
High School Nationals.

This time looked different, though, as Schultheis
looked to be in peak form. Whereas many of their
matches are known to end in early minutes, Schultheis
looked determined and answered Durand's first
throw (an uchimata for a yuko score) with a throw for
yuko of her own tying the match.

The two appeared even-matched, but Durand caught
Schultheis with two mistakes that resulted in a pair
of waza-aris (half-point each) that closed the
match and gave Durand her first World Team slot.

The 57kg division was expected to be the biggest
battleground on the women's side and lived up to the
hype.

In the first round, third-ranked Hana Carmichael
(Wellington, Calif./Budokan Judo) beat former #1
Angelica Delgado (Miami, Fla./North Miami USA Judo
National Training Site). Delgado held the top seed
until last week when a loss to Carmichael caused
Delgado to finish third at the USJF Junior Nationals.

Top-ranked Hannah Martin (Albany, N.Y./Jason Morris
Judo Center) drew an unexpected opponent in Gabriella
Baez (North Lauderdale, Fla./North Miami USA
Judo National Training Site). Baez, ranked fifth
in the division, moved into the fourth seed on the
heels of a late withdrawal by Pauline Macias
(Lancaster, Calif./Antelope Valley Judo). Martin
ended the fast-paced, highly physical match with a
pin for ippon.

In the final, Martin attempted to throw Carmichael
with an o uchi gari, but Carmichael countered the
move, throwing Martin for the yuko score that would
determine the match.

Carmichael's win forced a fight-off in which Martin
came out attacking and soon pinned her for the win.

"I think in the first match with Hana the nerves
got to me a little bit because this has been my goal
for the whole summer," Martin said. "It feels
really good to make the team. We're going to
work on learning a lot more techniques and I think by
fall my judo will be a lot different than it is now.

While everyone else at Trials was looking to compete
at their first Junior Worlds, 19-year-old Athens
Olympian Ronda Rousey (Buffalo Grove,
Ill./NYAC/Cohen's Judo) used this as an
opportunity to complete the first step on her quest
for a second Junior World Championship title.

In doing so, Rousey likely had the quickest matches
of the day, throwing Yanik Labrada (Miami, Fla./Miami
Judo Club) and Natalie Laursen (Livermore,
Calif./Amador Judo) each for ippon in the first and
second rounds, respectively.

Kayla Harrison (Middletown, Ohio/Renshuden) was
listed as the #2 seed at 70kg, but after defeating
top-ranked Katie Sell (Oshkosh, Wis./Welcome Mat
Judo) six times in just over four months, she was
viewed by many as the favorite to win the slot enough
though she would need to win the first two rounds
and a play-off to do so.

In the first round Harrison beat #3 Catherine
Bridges by the full gamut of points, throwing her for
a waza-ari, then picking up two yukos and a koka
before throwing her for a second waza-ari to win the
match.

Sell, on the other hand, had a first-round bye
before her final round match with Harrison. Like the
previous matches, Harrison dominated this one,
throwing sell first for a yuko and then with an o
goshi (hip throw) for ippon.

In the fight-off match, Harrison again accrued a
wealth of points, first scoring two yukos and a koka
before throwing Sell for waza-ari with a drop seoi
nage (shoulder throw) for a first waza-ari and then
a earning a second waza-ari with a leg pick to win the
match.

"I was really nervous, but not about losing as
much as I was about screwing up and getting injured,"
Harrison said.

And while injuries are of concern for many athletes,
they are particularly so for Harrison who won a
Junior World Team spot in 2004 as a 13-year-old in
the 52kg division, but had to give it up after
hurting her hand in practice.

Two years and three weight divisions later, Harrison
is looking forward to finally competing at a Junior
Worlds.

"I'm sure I'll be nervous, but if I train as hard as I
can and have a good day I'll be ok because I'd
definitely not going just to go," she said.

Marina Shafir (Latham, N.Y./Jason Morris Judo
Center) qualified for the Junior World Team in near
record time, needing only one match to overpower
#3-ranked Halee Shadden (Mineral Wells, Texas/Ruben
Martin Judo), throwing her with an o goshi for ippon,
to earn her spot.

Brittni Bradford (Land O'Lakes, Fla./St. Pete
Judo) also was named to the team in the +78kg in an
uncontested division.

USJF Junior National Judo Championships Day 2 Results

The USJF Junior National Championships concluded in
Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Sunday with several previews of
match-ups that may be seen at this week’s Junior World
Trials.

Jeanette Rodriguez (Margate, Fla./North Miami USA Judo
National Training Site) ran through the 48kg division
with little trouble, defeating each of her opponents
by ippon (instant win), including a semi-final victory
over 2006 USA Judo Junior Olympic Champion Corey-Jo
Tashima (Mililani, Hawaii/Shobukan Judo). The finals
were a repeat of last week’s USJA Junior National
match in which Rodriguez again defeated her North
Miami teammate Daimisy Porras (Hialeah, Fla.), this
time armbarring Porras for the win.

Porras, who recently moved up to 48kg from 44kg,
showed that she will be one to watch in her new
division, defeating both #4-ranked Tashima in the
silver medal final to finish second. Porras also
threw #2-ranked Brenna Clark (Hercules,
Calif./APOA/Okubu Judo) with an uchimata (inner thigh
throw) in the first round.

Franchesca Durand (North Lauderdale, Fla./North Miami
USA Judo National Training Site) and Nicki Schultheis
(Gurnee, Ill./Gurnee Judo Club) continued their
rivalry at 52kg. The two have fought frequently in
the finals of this division and Durand continued her
streak of having not dropped a match against
Schultheis in over a year, throwing the Pan Am Junior
silver medalist with a beautiful harai goshi (sweeping
hip throw) for ippon in the first minute.

Heidi Metzler (Manheim, Pa./Mayo Quanchi Judo), the
#3-ranked player at 52kg, had a difficult tournament,
dropping matches to Schultheis and Canadian Amy Merry
to finish fourth overall.

The 57kg division continues to be one of the most
watched ones on the women’s side with the three
top-ranked athletes competing as well as Tara Clark
(Hercules, Calif./APOA/Okubu) who needed a top-three
finish to move into a spot at the Junior World Trials.

Clark failed to reach the podium, but there was some
movement among the top seeds as Hannah Martin (Burnt
Hills, N.Y./Jason Morris Judo Center) won the division
to return to her #1 status and move Angelica Delgado
(Miami, Fla./North Miami USA Judo National Training
Site) into the #2 slot for Trials.

Martin looked excellent in her first outing of the
junior season, beating Delgado in the semi-finals and
pinning third-ranked Hana Carmichael (Wellington,
Fla./Budokan Judo) in the finals.

Carmichael, the USA Judo Junior Olympic Champion,
avenged last week’s pair of losses against Delgado at
the USJA Junior Nationals, throwing her with an o soto
gari (major outer reaping) for ippon and the silver
medal.

Larisa Lindstrom (Livermore, Calif./Amador Judo)
secured her Trials invitation, and a likely third
seed, by winning 63kg, including a victory over USJA
Champion Yanik Labrada (Miami, Fla./Miami Judo).

Top-ranked Katie Sell (Oshkosh, Wis./Welcome Mat
Judo/70kg) and Marina Shafir (Latham, N.Y./Jason
Morris Judo Center) each had their #1 ranking locked
up going into the weekend, but earned the
all-important confidence boost of posting a gold medal
win six days before Trials.

In the men’s divisions, 60kg had the most depth with
not only all four of next week’s Trials participants
competing, but also Peruvian Ronnie Talledo (North
Lauderdale, Fla./Ki-Itsu-Sai) in the mix.

Both Talledo and top-ranked Jeremy Liggett (Scotia,
N.Y./NYAC/Jason Morris Judo Center) are considered to
be top seniors as Talledo won the New York Open in
March and Liggett was a silver medalist at the Senior
Pan Ams in May.

Liggett, with one of the toughest draws of the day,
quickly defeated Aaron Kunihiro (Covina, Calif./San
Gabriel Judo) and Rafael Ramos (Union City, N.J./North
Miami USA Judo National Training Site) in his first
two rounds. Kunihiro likely will be the Trials’
fourth seed while Ramos, the #2 seed, is best known
for his gold medal win at Senior Nationals.

In the semi-finals, however, Talledo threw Liggett
thrown for a yuko (quarter-point) to take the lead.
Both athletes drew penalties later in the match, but
Talledo sealed the win, throwing Liggett with an o
soto gari for a yuko in the last 10 seconds of the
match.

Talledo would go on to beat Jean-Pierre Durand (North
Lauderdale, Fla./North Miami USA Judo National
Training Site) in the final. In the silver medal
match, Liggett, who beat 2005 Pan American Infantile
Champion Miguel Ballesteros (Miami, Fla./North Miami
USA Judo National Training Site) to advance to the
medal round, was up two kokas to one as the match
wound down. With 19 seconds remaining, Durand caught
Liggett with a fireman’s carry for a yuko and the
match.

Ivan Lopouchanski (Hollywood, Fla./Budokan), the
silver medalist at the USJA Juniors, won the 66kg
division, armbarring Christian Garcia (North Miami
Beach, Fla./Ki-Itsu-Sai). Top-ranked AJ Silverman
(Scotia, N.Y./Jason Morris Judo Center) won his first
match, but lost to Garcia in the semi-finals and then
again in the fight for second.

One of the day’s most watched matches was the gold
medal final between Bobby Lee (Lauderhill, Fla./North
Miami USA Judo National Training Site) and Nick
Delpopolo (Westfield, N.J./Cranford/Jason Morris Judo
Center). Considered to be two of the top junior
players in the United States, the only match-up for
the #1 and #2 ranked athletes in the 73kg division was
been in the final of the High School Nationals. In
March Delpopolo took the match, throwing Lee for a
yuko on the border of the mat.

This time around, borders came into play again as Lee
was handed an out of bounds penalty that would prove
to be the score Delpopolo needed to win the match.

Lee, who had defeated his previous opponents all by
ippon picked up another one with a win over Antonio
Rodriguez (Hialeah, Fla./Ki-Itsu-Sai) who won the
Juvenile B division on Saturday.

Yuko Sin (Glenville, N.Y./Jason Morris Judo Center)
was the only top-seeded male athlete going into Trials
to produce a gold medal this weekend. Sin, a Senior
Nationals bronze medalist, won 81kg decisively,
including a first-round defeat of Wesley Thomas (San
Mateo, Calif./Palo Alto Judo), the USA Judo Junior
Olympic Champion. In the final, Sin won over Phillip
Spano (Tampa, Fla./El Mambi Judo), a former top 73kg
player who moved up to 81 to win last week’s USJA
event. Spano, now ranked third, went on to defeat
Thomas to win the silver medal.

Jacob Larsen (Santa Rosa, Calif./Redwood Chase
Judo/90kg) won his second junior title of the season,
after a win at the USA Judo Junior Olympics two weeks
ago. After a bye and a first-round win against Gary
Cherny (Denver, Colo./Northglenn), Larsen threw Kyle
Vashkulat (Scotia, N.Y./Jason Morris Judo Center) with
an opposite side ippon seoi nage (shoulder throw) to
win the semis.

Larsen also had little trouble defeating his finals
opponent, Canadian Justin Schmaltz (CAN/Beiseiker,
Canada/Judo Alberta) to win the division. Schmaltz
then defeated Vashkulat in the silver medal match.

Although Larsen won the event, Vashkulat earned enough
points to regain his #1 ranking headed into Trials.
Steve Fayzakov (Fresh Meadows, N.Y./Spartak Sports
Club), who upset Larsen at this year’s High School
Nationals, will go into Trials with a third seed, but
finished out of medal range this Sunday.

Zane Malloy (Oak Harbor, Wash./Naval Air Station),
younger brother of Marti, a Senior Nationals silver
medalist former Junior World Team member, defeated
USJA Junior National Champion Daniel Yuabov (Fluhsing,
N.Y./Spartak) in the first round before beating
winning gold over Giorgio Gazzani, Panorama City,
Calif./Valley Judo) who recently made the move from
90kg to the 100kg division. Gazzani then lost in the
silver medal match to Yuabov, a High School Nationals
silver medalist as a heavyweight.

Top-ranked heavyweight Zachary Bell (Naperville,
Ill./Fox Valley Judo) won his third consecutive silver
medal of the 2006 Triple Crown series with a win over
Mitchell Yokogawa (Los Angeles, Calif./San Gabriel).
Finnish athlete Kari Kauppinen (FIN/Helsinki,
Finland/Finn-Fighter's Club) took the gold.

James LeBaron (Atlanta, Ga./Waka Mu Sha), who upset
Bell twice last week to win the USJA event, was unable
to repeat the feat at USJF’s, but will hold onto a
top-four ranking and a Junior World Trials invitation.

Hi Everyone

Like to thank all of Florida Judo for there support and hard work. Personally I
like to thank David, Richard, Gwen, Mike & Rachel New, Elias, the Prado's and
their group, Hector and his group, Francisco and his group, Maxine, Tracy,
Angel, Jimmy, Bobby, Evelio people and all that assisted us this weekend.
Without you we could not have had this event nor have had the success it had.
Your hard work an determination again proved that this state has the best core
of Judo people in the country. I received many compliments but it was all due to
your dedication. So I thank you again but we have one more week.

This USJF event was one of the hardest Shiai tournaments I have seen in a while.
The athletes appeared in tip top condition and appeared to be well coached

USJA Junior National Day 2 Results

The USJA Junior National Championships concluded
Sunday in Boca Raton, Fla. with many of the
anticipated Junior World Trials participants competing
in the IJF-Junior divisions.

With the Junior World Trials less than two weeks away
(July 29 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), there are still a
number of slots up for grabs as the top four athletes
in each division following next week’s USJF Junior
Nationals will receive bids to the trials.

North Miami USA Judo National Training Site teammates
Jeanette Rodriguez (Margate, Fla.) and Daimisy Porras
(Hialeah, Fla.) Porras is one of the top-ranked
athletes at 44kg, but made her junior debut at 48kg
this weekend against Rodriguez who is virtually
undefeated in junior competition during the past year.

Porras surprised many by picking up points early in
their first match, but Rodriguez quickly came back for
a win by ippon (instant win). Rodriguez returned for
the second match determined to win quickly and threw
Porras on the first attack six seconds into the match
with o soto gari (major outer reaping) for ippon.

In the 52kg division, Franchesca Durand (Coral
Springs, Fla./North Miami USA Judo National Training
Site) fought both of her matches against Heidi Metzler
(Manheim, Pa./Mayo Quanchi Judo). During one of their
last meetings, Metzler upset Durand, then the
#2-ranked senior as a 14-year-old, at the USA Judo
National Championships in April. This time, though,
Durand won both matches by ippon, taking the first
fight in less than a minute and the second in the
first 10 seconds of the match.

The 57kg division featured one of the most-watched
rivalries in the junior divisions with top-ranked
Angelica Delgado (Miami, Fla./North Miami USA Judo
National Training Site) and 2006 USA Judo Junior
Olympic Champion Hana Carmichael (Wellington,
Fla./Budokan Judo Club) fighting each other twice.
After losing to Delgado by a koka in the semis,
Carmichael got a second chance in a final match that
was watched by nearly everyone in the venue. The
match was close throughout, but Delgado threw
Carmichael for ippon with 20 seconds remaining.

Yanik Labrada (Miami, Fla./Miami Judo) defeated
Argentinian Sofia Aliendo (Coral Springs,
Fla./Ki-Itsu-Sai) to win the 63kg division and move
into the #6 spot on the roster.

At 70kg, Emily Lilly (Camarillo, Calif./Sawtelle) won
the division with a victory over Malinda Bridges
(Coventry, R.I./Mayo Quanchi Judo Club). Malinda’s
sister Catherine Bridges, estimated to be at least a
fourth seed at the Junior World Trials, finished
third.

Halee Shadden (Mineral Wells, Texas/Ruben Martin Judo)
won an uncontested 78kg division and now moves into
the #4 slot on the IJF-Junior roster.

Brittni Bradford (Land O’Lakes, Fla./St. Pete Judo),
this year’s Senior Nationals silver medalist, won
uncontested gold medals in both the heavyweight and
Open divisions.

On the men’s side, the 60kg division began with an
early surprise as 14-year-old Miguel Ballesteros
(Miami, Fla.) beat his North Miami USA Judo National
Training Site teammate Jean-Pierre Durand (Coral
Springs, Fla.) in the loser’s pool to advance to the
gold medal match. Durand, a fifth-place finisher at
the 2006 New York Open, is expected to be a third seed
at the Junior World Trials. In the finals, though,
2006 National Champion Rafael Ramos (Coral Springs,
Fla./North Miami USA Judo National Training Site)
threw Ballesteros with a seoi nage (shoulder throw)
for the win.

Jeff Fong (Houston, Texas/Diamondback Judo) likely
secured his invitation to the Junior World Trials,
going undefeated at 66kg including a marathon final
against Ivan Lopouchanski (Hollywood, Fla./Budokan
Judo Club). During the regulation period,
Lopouchanksi threw Fong with a tai guruma (corner body
wheel) for waza-ari. Fong responded by throwing
Lopouchanksi with ko uchi kake (minor inner reaping
with a fall on your opponent) to tie the match. The
two then went into a five minute Golden Score
(overtime) session which Fong won on flags.

Bobby Lee (Coral Springs, Fla./North Miami USA Judo
National Training Site) won his division, including a
final win with a resounding throw for ippon over
third-ranked Danny Satinsky (Plainfield, Ill./Cohen’s
Judo).

Phillip Spano (Tampa, Fla./El Mambi Judo), the
fourth-ranked athlete at 73kg made his 81kg debut with
four wins for the gold medal. In the final Spano
defeated 2006 Junior Olympic Champion Wesley Thomas
(San Mateo, Calif./Palo Alto Judo) by ippon. Spano
now moves into the #3 slot in the division heading
into the Trials.

In the 90kg division, Jacob Larsen (Santa Rosa,
Calif./Redwood Coast Judo Club) avenged his at High
School Nationals to Steve Fayzakov (Fresh Meadows,
N.Y./Spartak Sports Club) with a win over Fayzakov
this weekend.

Daniel Yuabov (Flushing, N.Y./Spartak Sports Club),
the High School Nationals silver medalist in the
heavyweight division, cut down to 100kg to defeat Alex
Gonnov (Aurora, Colo./Olympic Training Center USA Judo
National Training Site) whose silver medal moves him
into the #3 ranking in the division.

James LeBoron (Atlanta, Ga./Waka Mu Sha) won his first
junior national title with two wins over #1
heavyweight Zachary Bell (Naperville, Ill./Fox Valley
Judo and Jujitsu), throwing the 2005 Junior Open
Champion first with an uchimata (inner thigh throw)
for ippon and later with a tani toshi (valley drop)
for ippon.
