(Miami, Fla.) – Watching 17-year-old Bobby Lee (North
Lauderdale, Fla./Ki-Itsu-Sai/81kg) fight – and win –
match after match at Sunday’s Ladder Tournament at
Florida International University, one starts to
wonder: “Does the guy ever lose?”
The answer to that question: Not recently. Today’s win
marks Lee’s third senior title in just over a week as
he won the 73kg division at Saturday’s Fall Classic
National Championships as well as the same division at
last week’s Golden State Open in Glendora, Calif.
The trio of wins are Lee’s first titles on the senior
level while he has swept through the junior circuit
winning the Triple Crown of Judo (three junior
national championship events) as well as the Junior
U.S. Open in August.
His success at the Ladder, a senior elite level point
tournament where athletes who do not already have
points in the weight class that they enter compete for
national ranking points, also guarantees him an
invitation to the Senior U.S. Open, October 1-2 in
Fort Lauderdale, Fla. where he will compete against a
world-class field at an event that draws Olympians and
World Team members from more than 15 countries each
year.
“I think [the U.S. Open] will be hard, but I’m looking
forward to it,” said Lee who recently moved with his
family from Hatfield, Pa. to North Lauderdale to train
with 2004 Pan American Juvenile Judo Championships
Coach Jhonny Prado (North Lauderdale, Fla.)
Since his club’s creation in 2000, Prado has trained
some of the top young talent in the United States as
well as athletes from South America.
In fact, Lee is one of three athletes, all from
Ki-Itsu-Sai, to win gold medals at both the Ladder and
Saturday’s Fall Classic National Championships. Lee’s
teammate Jeanette Rodriguez (North Lauderdale, Fla.)
won 52kg division Sunday at the Ladder to go with her
48kg title from the Fall Classic while Francesca
Durand (North Lauderdale, Fla.) completed the same
feat, first at 52kg Saturday and then moving up to
57kg Sunday.
And in addition to his weekend collection of hardware,
Lee also was named Outstanding Male Player of the
Tournament as he went undefeated in his division
before throwing local athlete Shawn Blakey (Miami,
Fla./Florida International University Judo Club) for
Ippon in less than a minute in the final.
Seventeen-year-old Hannah Martin (Burnt Hills,
N.Y./Judo America) avenged her bronze medal finish at
the Fall Classic at 57kg by winning both the gold
medal at 63kg and winning Outstanding Female Player of
the tournament honors.
In doing so, Martin defeated Wendy Scholz (Iowa City,
Iowa/Judo America) twice in the double elimination
final.
Saturday Scholz had shut Martin out of the 57kg finals
en route to her gold medal win and her own Outstanding
Female Player of the tournament award.
“Yesterday was a big motivator for me,” Martin said.
“I hate losing and it made me want to come back today
and do better.”
Martin’s coach Jim Hrbek, praised the advances made by
the teen recently.
“Hannah’s made tremendous progress this year.
Obviously she was disappointed yesterday, but she
pulled it back together and had a great day,” said
Hrbek the 1992 Olympic Women’s Judo Team Coach and USA
Judo Junior Committee Chairman. “It’s easy to win when
you’re having a good day, but to come back and win is
even more impressive.”
