I don't like the idea of rear-steering! I cannot imagine how it could
work to ride around bends.

The seat does not look stable and ready to survive me! When riding up-
hill into the mountains after some time I stop to push-pull the
pedals, I only push. Then a lot of force is fed into the seat. And
actually the clip-less pedals will only allow to push hard. The seat
won't live long when used more often than on sundays. (I'm also
missing a hole for the sweat.)

I wonder whether the CVT could withstand 500 W! And at which
efficiency level.

Can ball-bearings work with soft aluminium? I'd prefer air.

Very interesting. Not sure if it would be at all easy to ride, as it has rear-wheel steering. But I like its seat, with the two side handles....

... In the past, I have studied rear wheel steered bikes. (See http://wannee.nl/hpv/abt/e-index.htm .) And this geometry looks very much like Fred de Weert's...
