The Finnish Lions AFC are the National Australian Football (Aussie Rules) Team of Finland. We are Finnish Nationals and Foreigners... we live in and around Helsinki and beyond.
The Finnish Lions first wore the colours in anger on 5th November 2005 in Prague, Czech Republic. The Lions were victorious and remain the only UNDEFEATED International Australian Football Team in the World !!!
The score in Prague was:
- Czech Rep- 5 - 7 - 37
- Finland---- 6 - 5 - 41
In 2006, the Finnish Lions will be taking on arch rivals (and Ice Hockey cheats) Sweden in a 3 Test Match International series at the front end of the season.
Later in the season, we shall travel to Continental Europe for a fixtured international, after which we shall be embarking on our 2006 European Union Championship Cup campaign in Paris, France on September 9th & 10th
We are always looking for more players and/or supporters... NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY !!!
We especially welcome Finnish Nationals to come and try out the game and to represent Finland against other nations.
To ensure that our national team is as strong as possible both at home and on tour - we are in the process of forming a national league encompassing the teams listed below:
- Helsinki Hawks
- Espoo Eagles
- Vantaa Vultures
- Turku Turkeys
- Oulu Owls
- Kuopio Kestrels
- Pori Peregrines
- Far North Falcons (Lappland)
Can you see a recurrent theme in the team names ???
That's right, we all catch prey by using a Tallinn
We are also actively looking to establish a Gaelic Football (GAA) presence in Finland to play amongst ourselves and also at European tournaments.
With the formation of the domestic AFL competition - it is hoped that we can easier increase the level of participation of a broader cross section of society, in particular - students. We hope that universities will develop teams for the national competition.
