Kurt Thiel asked me to get the word out.  It has been cold enough to have some ice racing and there is one planned for both Saturday and Sunday.  You can race before and after the FLR winter rally this weekend.

 

There is 12-16" of ice on Honeoye Lake.  (minimum of 12" needed per the rules.)

 

The entry point to the race is at Trident Marine on East Lake Road.  Take 20A into Honeoye and turn south onto East Lake Road.  Trident Marine is about 2 miles down the road.  Drive out the boat launch and to the pit area.

 

Street legal class, any DOT snow tires studs or not are allowed.

AWD, no studs are allowed.

(No big V8, heavy cars desired.)

No contact rules apply, but you are on ice.  Competitors are very considerate and realize that these are a bunch of street driven cars.  If you make contact, you will be black flagged and likely asked to leave.

 

registration 8:30 to 9 AM (be prompt)

practice 9:01 to 9:03 AM

racing starts at 9:04 AM

(not quite that quick, but the idea is to get racing before it warms up too much.)

Done between 1 to 4 PM dependent on ice conditions.  (expect by 1:30 to let the ice heal; that way you can go do the FLR winter rally Saturday night!)

 

Races are about 15 minutes long, just over a mile in track length, road course style.

 

Cost is approximately $30 for membership to cnyira (Central NY Ice Racing Association) and the cost to race for the weekend is $30 to $50 dependent races you want to enter.

 

Fire extinguisher and a DOT or Snell helmet are required.  Standard racing rules apply and cars must be empty of loose object.  Also, please have no leaking cars as there are environmental concerns with being on the lake.

 

As a personal endorsement, this is a lot of fun!  I did it a number of years ago and had a big grin on my face for days afterwards.
