Oakland University has a fencing team?!? Yes, yes we do. Of course, you probably haven't heard of us. In the past decade or so the Fencing Society of Oakland University has held on by a thread, almost literally, only because on occasion one member decided not to quit. That's no reason to turn your head, though, as there's still hope for us! Our coach, Victor, knows his stuff and has coached Fencing OU for the past 15 years, but has coached fencing for nearly forty years. One of his students eventually earned an "A" ranking (the highest rank a fencer can earn) and is one of six in Michigan with an "A" in foil. Many other schools have successful fencing clubs, so why can't we? Fencing requires discipline and sometimes hard training, but don't despair, with friends like us on board it's enjoyable, and you're likely to enjoy the humor of our coach. You don't need to have any previous experience to join us. Most of our fencers here start from scratch, and in a few weeks time they get the hang of everything and develop the makings of a capable fencer. It's the perfect sport if you're not very athletic since it doesn't require running or great athleticism - it's an everyman's sport. As of now, the only weapon we train with is the foil, but we provide all equipment and if you want to buy your own check the links page. There is no cost to join, but there is a Rec Center fee if you're not an OU student. You are more than welcome to watch us practice; check the schedule below for when and where. If you want to learn more, sign up with a Yahoo ID and join. Feel free to ask questions.
We would like to welcome D.C. Moons as assistant coach!
