I am interested in having help with changes and repairs that need to
be made to the beach court facility from businesses and business
persons within the league. I already am going to get some help from
within. I have made a list below of changes and repairs below. If
you can help or have some suggestions about making the facility
better let me know. Bear in my mind I don't have a lot of money to
spend, but at the same time I want to put money in the pockets of
those who support my organization. Thank you.

Sneaky Pete's had their last day open last Saturday, May 17th. They
now have a couple weeks or so to clear their stuff out. Paul
Conway, the remaining owner, wished Fair Play Beach Volleyball well
which was a kind gesture.

I also have to wait until La Frontera moves out from the
downstairs. They had intended on renting the whole building and the
outside at one time but it fell through. They thought they had
Paul's liquor license for this endeavor but that was news to Paul
when I ran into him.

So after La Frontera gets out of there I will start to get some
things fixed, and bring in some real equipment (better balls, mic
and P.A. box, etc...). By the way, if anyone sees the old P.A.
box, dry erase board, my volleyball clock, and volleyball container
in a pawn shop or in someone's back seat let me know as they seem to
have disappeared some time after La Frontera was kind enough to
sweep the floor of the shack for me two weeks before the start of
summer volleyball.

One thing to remember when you see other people that seem so skilled
when you don't seem so skilled is that a lot of these people play
every other day at least! If that is not the case then they may
have went through some intense volleyball training at some time.
Occaisionally, there are good athletes that pick up the game really
fast...but this is rare. Passing and setting the ball can take a
while to get a handle on.

I'm planning on having a skills clinic on Saturday, May 31st at 1
pm.

I have the indoor league ready to start on Thursday, May 29th at
Turnstone. Matches will be between 8 and 10 pm. There are 8 teams
entered so we will play 2 matches a night, rally scored to 18 with a
21 cap. Some of the teams are still short on players in case you
know any out there that want to play.

Here are the start times for the 29th.

8 pm) Spike Passers, Oak Hill Realty, Baltes Cardiology, Team Luepke

8:30) Charias, Team Grover

9 PM) Team Roth, Team Bay/Taylor

HOUSE RULES AT TURNSTONE

Do not peel in and out of Turnstone. There may be kids or adults
wheeling in for treatment, potnetially at any time of the day or
night.

Do not prop the doors open. There is air conditioning available.

Please do not park in the truck dock...or along the fence next to
the building with the spray painted artwork that says "Welcome to
the Beach." The reason being that there is storage space already
being used inside the River City Bar building and trucks need
access. Trucks also use the driveway by the far court and need
enough space to get in and out easily.

Please do not bring pets. I do not want your pet's buddies to hear
about this legendary giant litter box that has to be seen or pooped
in to be believed.

Thank you for returning lost volleyballs and cleaning up after
yourself. I love 96 to 99 percent of you all for that.

Please do not bring drinks in bottles. I do not want anyone to step
on glass or bottle caps...not even the 1 to 4 percent of people who
don't respect the facility.

Please do not bring kids under 13. It might seem harmless to have
your kid in for a few minutes...but others with kids see that. Next
thing I know once I turn my head is that there's skateboarders, kids
jumping off the bleachers, kids running near the street and
wandering on to the courts. Sorry, I do not run a day care center.

The insurance situation changes after next week. My insurance does
not apply to kids under 13. Therefore, I do not want kids to come
out anymore. Next week will be the warning week. After May 22nd
kids under 13 may not enter.
Also, you may BYOB, but do not bring glass. Although Sneaky Pete's
served alcohol in bottles in the past it was under their insurance
umbrella. I do not want the liability issue of people potentially
stepping on broken glass.

Can you do something about players who have kids who let them run
out of control?

Yes...I am going to start doing something about that because it is
starting to become a problem. I want to encourage everyone to play,
but I am not running a day care center. Most of the facilities I
use are tight on space and little kids running near the court are at
risk of being hurt by a spiked ball or a running player. Most
people do well with their kids when they bring them. But 20% to 30%
need to improve their habits.

I want to emphasize that I do not want any kids under 14 at the
beach courts this summer. The reason it is 14 is because that is
the cut off age for the insurance I carry. If you bring kids under
14 it is liability concern that I do not want to have.

I have received complaints from the Seminary about kids being out of
control and I simply can't have that anymore. I am grateful that
the leagues are growing so well...more than I can handle to be
honest...but Fair Play Volleyball is going to enforce the
unsupervised children policy from now on. Polite requests are
over.

Also, remember you can't bring food or drinks onto most of the gym
floors Fair Play Volleyball uses.

We want to play in the leagues but need early games. Is it possible
to give us early games every week?

I've been told I've been too accomodating at times which is probably
true. But if there are teams I am aware of that need early games
and teams that need late games I will certainly have them balance
each other out on the schedule by giving them the times they want.
Whenever this happens though, if these two teams are in the same
league, those teams would need to play each other at some between-
time point.

Basically, though, I am not going to inconvenience all the other
teams in the league if a request is an incovenience. I have had
teams request 7:30 and 8 pm games every week and won't do that... as
that is the prime time to play and it would push everyone else to
play early and late more than there share (Note: it's really hard
to put out a perfectly balanced schedule though...).

Sometimes there may be bye weeks in a league and I may also be able
to give a bye to a team that has several players gone for a
particular night if I know before I make the schedule. So
basically, if a request is reasonable, I can usually work with it.
And usually there isn't a problem giving early games or late games
for most of the league's schedule...since there are teams that tend
to have a bias toward playing either one or the other.

Can you change the schedule once you've made it?

No, I can't.

Can women play in men's leagues?

Yes...but men can't play in the women's leagues. Whatever it takes
to get more women playing is good. I don't care if an all woman
team enters a men's league. I don't know what's wrong with that.

And I want to try to have a coed reverse league again sometime.
This is where the net height is set at women's and only the women
can hit and block at the net. The men have to hit behind the ten-
foot line.

If I am being placed on a team, do I have to try out?

Of course not. Everyone is welcome to play. There is Fair
Play...nobody is ever "cut". Just let me know what level you think
you are at and I will find some other people of a similar level.
There are all levels available, from beginning (Rec) to intermediate
(B) to advanced (B+).

As far as the beach leagues this summer go, the best nights for
beginners are Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. They are
more like party nights as there tend to be a lot more people hanging
around before and after their matches. The best nights for advanced
play are Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. There is also an indoor summer
league on Thursdays that is good for intermediate or advanced
players.

How many people can I have on my roster?

You can have as many people as you want on your roster...as long as
they do not belong to another team.

Is there a girl touch rule?

No. I know USAV rules have it in their coed rulebook but I think it
was put in there to keep goofy tall guys from trying to dominate the
game. Women around here are too integral already to worry about
including some silly rule about them having to touch the ball. If
they aren't integral they'll just find some other guys to play with.

After thinking about it, I might be tempted to try the girl touch
rule in the "C" leagues once and see how it goes...

Are there are any special rules for beach fours?

-There are no tips (rolls, cameltoes, knuckle shots are all ok...
basically the redirection of the ball makes it a tip).

-You can't receive the serve open-handed. In other words you can't
hand-set the serve.

-There are no oversets. If you are hand-setting the ball over the
net your shoulders have to be square to the ball (either front set
or back set). Side sets over the net are oversets (and
faults)...and if you are setting a teammate and it crosses over
before a teammate can get a touch on it, or it is blocked by the
other team, then it is an overset.

-There is no center line. You can go under the net as long as you
do not interfere with the opponent.

-You do not have to rotate and everyone can hit at the net. There
is no back row. You just have to keep the same serve rotation.

These are just standard beach rules for USAV rules. The third and
first rules are just good rules for fours and lowers the amount
of "cheesy points" a team might get. The second rule could change
in the future...

Here are the start times for the Wednesday league which starts next
Wednesday May 21st at the Fair Play Beach Courts. Teams will play 2
approximately half hour matches (2 games rally scored to 18) & will
start at 6 pm:

6 PM) Spiked, Sidewinders

6:30) Team Rager, Pathway Young Adults, Bonar Group, Wilson (D
Roberts), Quicksand

7 PM) BS Fan Club, Chili Dogs, Gin Mill Bar Flies

7:30) Big Mac and the Pickle Chips, Hot Shots

8 PM) Heritage Food, Rock Stars, Team Henry

8:30) Petroleum Traders, Team Worley

9 PM)

Bye) Wrangling Oprah

Please let me know if you have any team name changes, and please
note that I said above that you play 2 matches a night. The above
is merely the start time.

It is now A-ok to BYOB. Ding dong the wicked witch is dead...Sneaky
Pete's is now closed. No more having players yelled at for tracking
sand into the bar...no more being criticized for volleyball players
not buying food when they don't even know what their menu looks
like...no more threats from an owner to flatten the volleyball area
into a parking lot...

But anyway...I can say I at least have the verbal indication with
the landlord that I can do a separate deal now on the volleyball
courts. He is tired of deadbeat bar owners not paying their rent.
The indication he gave to me was that he would like to turn the
building into storage. So if you know anyone, any business, that
needs big storage space and grasps the concept of paying rent for
usage (lol) let me know...please...

At this time I would like no kids to come in for various reasons.
Also, I need teams to sign waiver forms but I may need to change
them to suit the new environment and plan to get them done by week
#2.

Teams need to paid up by week #2. Rosters need to be turned in by
week #2 and may include anyone who is not on another team that plays
on the same night. From now on, anyone on your roster or who played
on your team up until the second to last week of the regular season
is eligible for the league tourney. There will be no more
exceptions. Using ineligible players is a valid protest for an
opposing team, before or after the match.

Thanks for entering,

How do we know if matches are canceled for the night?

In the winter if there is a snow emergency, it is pretty much a sure
thing we are going to cancel.

In the summer the beach can take a lot of rain. The beach courts
drain fantastically. Severe storms and lightning are the main
reasons for postponing matches. You can call me to check the
current situation (402-3999) and I will get a message on ASAP as
soon as I know what I am going to do. Unfortunately for me, a lot
of storms tend to build up suddenly in the late afternoon and
disappear just as quickly. With those temperamental storms I
usually cancel matches up until a certain time. And then we begin
at whatever time I have said is ok to start again.

An important note is that I never push matches back a week. If
there is a date affixed to when you play, then that is the date you
play. Any matches that need to be made up are tacked on at the end
of the season, or at open spots on a particular night's
schedule...if there are any time slots available.

Besides storms and lightning I may sometimes cancel in heavy,
consistent rain. And also combinations or not of rain, cold and
cold winds. Basically, when the temperature gets around 55 to 60
degrees it is borderline to be playing in bare feet. One great way
to keep the feet warm is to wear sand socks:

https://www.keysecure.com/vincere.net/cgi-t/cart.cgi?
cart=sportswear&category=Sandsocks

My best promo line for them is that "they look goofy, but they feel
great". I'll have to work on that if I'm going to sell them.

Salt and Light Christian Fellowship, a student organization and
ministry of Kossuth Street Baptist Church is planning to hold it's
17th annual co-ed volleyball tournament June 14th at the Purdue
University co-rec fields . After May 20th the registration materials
and information should be at www.ksbc.net . The event is held in
support of Trinity Mission - an organization which assists homeless
people and people who need assistance to re-enter society from 22
counties in west central Indiana .
We have two levels of volleyball - intermediate - B level - intramural
level - and competitive -A level - men's and women's club - college
and ex-college varsity players . It is 6 person co-ed - people can
play with 4 or 5 but must have as many gals as guys to play in the
afternoon tournament nonregulation teams - more guys than girls can
play in the morning round robin . The round robin records will be used
to divide the teams into smaller brackets .
The cost is $3.00 per person.
We put up many nets outside in the grass - at the corner of 3rd and
McCormick ( http://news.uns.purdue.edu/newsweb.maps.html) The
morning is a round robin - play 5 to 6 games out of 6 to 7 rotations -
and then in the afternoon - we play double elimination tournament .
We help people to find teams - also we usually have one intermediate
and one competitive team that just plays the morning round robin (
people have to work in the afternoon - 3 pm wedding - etc ) .
We have all sorts of teams - league teams , family teams , Church
teams and corporate teams - we have teams from the co-rec . It is a
bit of a social event . we have high school players , college , and
even masters players ( 40 to 50 ) that play in the master's national
tournaments .
Usually we have 6 to 8 competitive teams and 14 to 16 intermediate
teams . This the 17th year for the co-ed volleyball .
This is the second year for ultimate Frisbee . The ultimate Frisbee
primarily included high school , college and young career people last
year .
This year we expect more ultimate Frisbee teams as both Jeff and
Harrison High schools have teams . We may have informal ultimate
Frisbee practice times in May. We may have an athletic team including
Purdue football players and a ROTC team . We will likley have two
ultimate frisbee teams made from individuals who just want what to
play.
We help people find teams to play on so please contact us if you are
interested in playing either sport. We will also mail or email poster
and flyers for people willing to invite other people ( friends) .

As of this time Sneaky Pete's is closed. However, it will be a 3 or
4 week legal process for them to be removed from the building. And
they are being allowed to have one more night open for an event that
couldn't be canceled.
Basically, from my understanding of the situation it is ok to BYOB
to the courts since the bar is officially shut down. I would prefer
that no one brings kids at this time for various reasons.
Things are basically looking up... My organization has been greatly
inhibited by the prescence of Sneaky Pete's. I can now move ahead
with getting people out to use the courts more...which is what they
are there for.

(its usually colder to start the season anyway). It is part of the
plan to not to take the beach season into October anymore. And it
also means ending the autumn session one week earlier, and not so
close to X-mas.

Sample Tuesday 2004 slate:

Winter Session: January 6th to March 2nd
Spring Session: March 16th to May 4th
Summer Session 1: May 18th to July 13th
Summer Session 2: July 27th to September 21st
Autumn Session: October 12th to December 14th

We are also planning on offering tourneys on the weekend every 3
weeks.

It's almost beach volleyball weather. There are 3 great outdoor
courts located at 405 River Bend Court (the old River City
complex). If you haven't played beach volleyball here before it is
not like playing at an apartment complex. The sand is soft and
doesn't have little rocks in it.

Plus it's a great party atmosphere. Warm weather, music, and lots
of people hanging out...

Please note that the early entry sign-up date is April 21st. I need
the entire fee by this day or postmarked by that date in order to
qualify for the early entry.

The regular entry deadline is one week before the league starts. I
have already heard that a lot of teams are interested in playing on
Mondays and Thursdays so please enter early to reserve your spot for
those leagues.

If you are an individual, or better yet if you have a small group of
2 or 3 people interested in playing, let me know and I can find
other people that are interested in the same night. For coed
leagues it is easier to match up male players with teams if they
have a female player in their group.

Beach Volleyball at the Fair Play Beach Courts

Sunday Coed 4's ($160 per team, $140 early entry) Begins May 18th
Monday Men's & Women's 4's ($180 per team, $140 early entry) Begins
May 12th
Tuesday Coed 4's ($160 per team, $140 early entry) Begins May 13th
Wednesday Coed 6's ($210 per team, $180 early) Begins May 21st
Thursday Coed 6's ($270 per team, $210 early) Begins May 8th

Friday Coed 6's ($210 per team, $180 early) Begins May 30th

Thursday Indoor Coed 6's ($210 per team, $180 early) Begins May 15th
__________________________________________________________
Early Entry Deadline is April 21st

Leagues last 7 or 8 weeks & are followed by a tourney.

All divisions are offered Sunday through Wednesday (B+, B & C).

Beach Thursday is a massive "C" League.
Please note that there is an indoor Thursday league. The location
has yet to be determined.

I just wanted to send an update on the tourney next Saturday, March
29th at Taylor. At this time there are 10 to 12 teams entered:

Team Scheitlin

Huntington

5150

Team Harber

Team Bourne

Team Hoghe

Team Harvey

Team Wirt

Team Rody

Team Abbott

Team Kracium?

Team Helms?

Team Bonham?

I may have left somebody out. Please let me know if anything is
different than what I have listed above. I don't want to take more
than 12 teams, although last year's 13 team tourney went very well.

I see two pools of six. It looks like everyone is around the "B+"
level. I'm not sure if I should try to seed the pool play divisions
as I'm not really sure how strong everyone is for this one. I could
do a random seeding...maybe alternating last names or something.
Give me some input on this if you want.

The tourney is scheduled to start at 10 am. If we do get 12 teams I
will check and see if we can move the start up to 9 am. Please let
me know if you would like your pool play scheduled in a block rather
than at regular intervals. This would allow your team to take an
extended lunch/break if that is convenient for you.

All teams play in a single elimination tourney at the end of pool
play. I am tentatively planning for the top 4 seeds to play in an
upper tourney and the lower 2 seeds in each pool to play in a
consolation tourney. There will be as lesser prize for the winner
of the consolation tourney as compared to the winner of the upper
tourney. Pool play will be one game to 18 or 25 (win by 2). The
tourney will be best 2 of 3 to either 18 or 25 (win by 2).

The tourney will cost $90 per team. You can send your entry fee to
& make your check out to:

Mike Harvey

1001-4 Edgewater Avenue

Fort Wayne, In. 46805

Or you can bring payment to the tourney and pay in a lump sum before
we start.

There will probably be the last Fair Play Indoor Saturday Tourney of
the year...although I may try to find a site for an April 19th
tourney. I may try to have a Sunday tourney in late April.

There will be a tourney run by Dave Schroeder in Huntington at
Huntington College on April 12th. Try this e-mail if you want info
on that tourney: vbbeachplayer@...

Thanks for putting a team in. Please contact me if you have any
questions.

There will a coed sixes tourney Saturday, March 15th and March 29th
starting at 10 am at Taylor University in Fort Wayne. It will be $90
per team. There are 2 divisions offered "open" and "B".

Thanks to the teams who played in the last tourney and congrats to
the team from Upland who won it. The Taylor tournies will feature
pool play, followed by a seeded single elimination tourney.
Everyone makes the tourney...although the lower seeds may play a
shorter first round match. We use USAV rules.

There are already 2 teams entered. Please contact me if you have a
team, or if you are interested in playing as an individual....as
there are teams that are forming that could perhaps use a player or
2 or 3.

I just wanted to let those of you know who play in the volleyball
leagues, or that played on the Fair Play summer coed softball team,
or who that played on the Fair Play summer coed softball team, or
who played at the open court last week on Tuesday and Thursday at
Turnstone, that Adam Marks died late Saturday night while helping a
friend. It had something with his heart.

Adam has a similar quality to George Bailey, I feel, from the "It's
a Wonderful Life" movie. The world is a better place because we
knew Adam. If this was someone I didn't really care for, I would
say nothing at this point.

But Adam was just a great guy. He had integrity. He was
personable and was good at making things work...diplomaticly. He
was easy going, and yet progressive.

I choose to believe Adam is out there looking on somewhere right
now, and eventually will move on to his the next challenge...the
next adventure. Please send good thoughts, good energy to the
remaining friends and family. I just want to say I appreciate the
people out there who are like Adam, quiet and helpful, that I've
neglected to say that I have appreciated.
