Just a reminder about the Advanced Coxswain Clinic this weekend.  The directions and times have been posted on the Stetson Crew Web page.  The location is in the Wilson Center adjacent to the Edmunds Center Gymnasium.  For those of you that attended the fall clinic this is a different location and actually easier to find.  We have close to 20 people signed up already.

Hello Everyone, My name is Joe Dobson and I'm very glad to be the new men's coach for the Sarasota Scullers Youth Rowing Program.  I'm coaching with Alex Alexandru and we are looking forward to a great season.  I've had the pleasure of meeting some of you at the recent USRA coaches certification that Charles ran so well at Stetson.  I'm coming here from Annapolis, Maryland where I coached at the Naval Academy as well as the Annapolis Rowing Club.  I did my scholastic rowing on the Schyulkill and at Marietta College.  I really love being able to rowing my single in the middle of Winter.
This year I have a men's quad as one of my top boats, so if any of you can schedule any mens quad races at your regattas, I sure would appreciate it.
I look forward to meeting you all and to benefit from your advise about rowing in Florida.  Joe Dobson

Hood Cup is approaching fast.  Please visit our web site www.2004HoodCup.com  there you will find all the information you will need.

The Hood Cup committee will take a firm stand and there will be no doubling.

If you can please send your entries early.

Since this is the first major race of the season it is going to be very hard to seed the crews.  I will do the best that I can.  I am thinking right now in the varsity eight events to row three heats the top two to finals and then the next two from each heat run a petite race, this will give the other regattas more information for seeding.  I am open for any other suggestion on this matter.

Dear All,

It seems that we have come to an impasse regarding the voting on changes to
the Constitution. Brice has sent out the vote count to you all.

We need to decide what to do next and I would like to suggest that we
table this issue for the remainder of the Spring Season and discuss this at
our next meeting.
(This has been agreed upon by the Exec Committee.)

If we do not table the issue one option would include reverting back to
the 2000 constitution, in essence eliminating the clubs from our State
race and/or including them in our State High School race. This would
probably not go over very well.

It has also been suggested that we allow clubs to break down to their High
School teams and race at the State Race as we have in the past. After
discussing this with several coaches and reviewing the USRowing Rules it
would not be in the best interest to all if this practice is allowed to
continue.

I feel that the best thing to do would be to race this spring with the
same guidelines that were followed last year. We will have a Championship
race for High Schools (no novices, only Frosh boats) and a Championship
Youth Race that includes the Clubs. With the spring season upon us and
being the host State for the SRAA Race we should focus on fast racing and
put the politics aside.

The Exec Committee can deal with individual problems as they arise and
hopefully solve them to everyone’s satisfaction.

Please feel free to contact me or any other member of the Exec Committee if
you have any further questions.

Sincerely,

Tom

Dear Coaches,

The fully buoyed albano course will be in place for the Hood Cup this weekend.  However, this new course has lanes that are the standard 45' width, not the 60' ones we have used the last few years.  So, being tighter at the start, if there is any wind at all, it will be ESSENTIAL that you spend some extra time coaching your crews (especially the novices) about how to maneuveur their boats at the starting line. It was obvious at the Novice Race this year that there are MANY crews that do not know the following (mainly how to deal with the wind and how to scull the boat around):

1)  Be very near the starting line if your event is next.  Keep track of where the other crews in your event are, and come in a group to the staging area.

2)  Once your race is called by the official at the start, approach in FRONT of the stake boats, and UPWIND.

3)  Turn about 2 - 3 (not 1, not 8) lengths in front of the stake boat, UPWIND, then back in slowly without slamming into the stake boat.

4)  Once the stern locks on, BE PREPARED for the bow to be blown DOWNWIND, so have everyone in the bow of the boat understand what SCULLING THE BOAT AROUND means, then do it to keep your point.  You can overcorrect if necessary, depending on how many crews have yet to lock on.  You should keep your boat pointed as much possible INTO the wind.

5)  Sometimes if the wind is strong, it takes more than one person to scull the boat around. In a four, it is tricky to have two people on the same side scull, but it can be done if everyone leans the correct way, away from the sculling side.  It's better not to risk it, but sometimes it works with more experienced crews.

6)  If you are locked on early, have the person(s) sculling the boat around stay in that position and row, then stop, then row again as necessary to keep the bow pointed either upwind or down the course, but DON'T GET BLOWN TOO FAR DOWNWIND.

If every coach will work with their crews to understand these fundamental techniques at the start, and the wind is 10 mph or less, we can get the races off on time.  With races only ten minutes apart, there is very little time for teaching crews that have no clue as what to do at the starting line.

If you want to, you can print this out and hand it out to your coxswains.  The referees greatly appreciate you taking the time to train your crews on these basics.

Thanks, and good luck on Saturday!

Barbara,

You might want to forward this story to Beth and anybody else you know who is involved in larger scale regattas that have EMS or similar medical contracted coverage. Even if you are not the regatta organizer, it would seem that you are percieved to have responsibility for rower safety even off the water. Before EMS (emergency medical service) departs the venue, they should "check out" with a designated and identified and accessible and responsible official.

I speak with experience on this as I have been left high and dry at the end of football games with what I call "straggler" injuries. The "oh by the way Doc, could you look at this boy?" kind of circumstance. In one case it was a neck injury , in the other, an airway problem (a fractured trachea question). In both cases the EMS had taken off as "the game was over". A physician on site is only a first aid giver if there is no life support equipment, no airways, no backboard, no neck collar etc. Guess what? That stuff is in the EMS truck that just rolled out the gate.

I'll get off my soapbox now. Read the article.

Pain of victory
NICK BROWN
March 21, 2004

EXHAUSTED schoolboy rowers were left to be treated by spectators at the GPS Head of the River regatta yesterday after an on-duty paramedic left.

A crowd of more than 5000 gathered to witness a drama-filled day at Wivenhoe Dam that climaxed with one of the closest First Eight races seen.

Pre-race favourites Anglican Church Grammar School won the coveted rowing trophy by just half a second from Brisbane Grammar School, which had looked set to stage an upset victory.

The racing took its toll on two rowers in the main race.

They required medical attention after collapsing from post-race exhaustion, dehydration and hyperventilation.

Churchie's Alexander Groeneveld and Brisbane Boys College's Griff Moore were treated by onlookers after the on-duty Queensland Ambulance Service paramedic left when the race finished.

Officials were forced to call an ambulance to help the students, both of whom eventually recovered.

The ambulance took more than 30 minutes to reach the dam.

A Rowing Queensland spokesman said the incident would be investigated.

Earlier races also provided drama as emotions pushed inter-school rivalry to a peak. Tensions boiled over after the presentations as insults turned to punches and a small fight broke out between several former students.

As well as winning the First Eight event, Churchie took the overall points trophy.

Dear Coaches

Attached please find the lane assignments for the Miami Internaitonal Regatta, please check for corrections and let me know as soon as possible or at the Coaches and Coxes meeting on Friday night 6:00 PM. at the MRC boathouse.

This year we have made a couple of changes to the regatta 1) we will be handing out 1st, 2nd & 3rd place medals in every flight. 2) we will be handing out medals after the lunch break. If you want to pick up the medals please have a coach pick them up as a group.

We will also be handing out a welcome packet and traffic pattern to be observe both Friday and Saturday.

Hope that you have a safe trip into Miami.

Sincerely, Row Hard

My apologies to those who were confused by the omission of novices in Youth Championship Regatta Rules. As was decided 2 years ago at the annual fall coaches meeting and not changed at the last fall coaches meeting, novice events ARE NOT held at the scholastic championships but novice events WILL BE held at the youth championships.

As defined by FSRA in the past, a novice rower or coxswain for this year's event is a person who has not participated in the sport of rowing prior the summer of 2003.

Also, please note that the 2004 USRowing Youth Invitational Regatta has added the lightweight men's 4+ and lightweight women's 4+ in this year's event. Therefore, these events will follow the championship event format as specified in the online youth rules.

Thanks,

Brice A. Crossley

FSRA Corresponding Secretary
