I spoke to the Resolute rep at the USRowing convention this weekend and they are willing to host a boat repair clinic sometime before our Spring racing season starts.  I just wanted to find out how much interest there was out there.  She said that it would be a few hours long and she would work with our schedule as much as she could.
Let me know,
Jamie

Please refer to Bill's (from Resolute) reply.  I believe we would have to put it up for a vote if we would like FSRA to foot the bill.  This would be my suggestion, but only for those coaches that are affiliated with member programs.

Dear Jamie,
I will have to check these date to make sure that I will be available. After discussing the clinic with the President of Resolute. He feels that $50.00 per person would be a fare price. We also discussed the possibility of also including a rigging clinic as well. We have an expert in rigging that also was the boatmen for Harvard for many years.. He would also be interested in also speaking at this clinic.  Lets keep in touch.  Thanks

Bill,
Charles Huthmaker at Stetson University is presenting USRowing Level I & II clinics on the weekend of January 24th.  I am checking with him to see if he is able to incorporate the repair clinic into his presentation.  If so, will that work for you?  Also, I forgot to ask if Resolute will be charging for this clinic?
Thanks,

Dear All,

$50/person seems a bit much. How about a free clinic and in return Resolute can give a talk on why we should purchase their boats. The USRowing Convention will be held in Miami Beach next December 2004. All of the boat builders are present and repair clinics are usually offered at no additional charge. FSRA could request USRowing to organize a special session devoted to boat repair. Have each boat builder provide tips and tricks... Time savers.... Hands on repair... Question/answer type stuff... I would really like to see a panel discussion.. Get the boat builders together and fire questions... "top or side mounted riggers???"

Hope everyone has a relaxing winter break,
Dave

Dear Brice,

Thank you for helping me get the word out about our upcoming trip:

RESOLUTE'S FLORIDA TOUR 2004

Resolute Racing Shells will be in Florida again this winter scheduling boat
demos for January and February. At present we have arranged demos in the
following areas:
Tampa
Cocoa Beach
Miami
Wellington (singles)

Our representatives will be available to meet with any interested coaches
throughout the month. Our tentative schedule includes the following dates in
these areas:
Jan 2-5:
Tampa, Orlando, Gainesville, Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Daytona Beach

Jan 7-10:
Melbourne, Cocoa Beach, West Palm Beach, Wellington, Miami Beach

Jan 11-18:
Cocoa Beach, Tampa, Sarasota, Fort Myers, Miami

Jan 25 - Feb 1.
TBA

February
TBA

We can adjust our schedules to better suite your needs. We would be happy to
meet with individual coaches or groups of coaches, parents or board members to
explain what makes a Resolute different than all other boats on the market.

Please contact us if you are interested in learning more about Resolute. We are
also very interested to learn more about your programs. Resolute has spent the
last year finding new ways to help crews get the most return on their equipment
investment. Our flexible financing and lease/rent options make our boats
assessable to any size crew. The unequaled durability and stiffness of our hulls
make them boats you CAN'T AFFORD TO NOT OWN. Our current models include:

EIGHT PERSON HULLS:
Lightweight eight; 135-165 lbs. (avg. weight of crew)
Midweight eight; 165-195 lbs.
Heavyweight eight; 185-215 lbs.

FOUR PERSON HULLS:
Midweight four; 150-190 lbs.
(this design has been highly successful this year in all weight classes, from
high school girls to collegiate men)
Midweight quad; 150-190 lbs.

SINGLES:
Lightweight; 140-175 lbs.
Heavyweight; 185-215 lbs.

All of these boats, except for the quad, will be available for
demonstrations in Florida.

We will also be scheduling a repair/rigging workshop. Please contact Bill
SanMartin, our Service Manager, if you are interested in attending this event.

We all look forward to hearing from each of you. Thank you in advance for your
interest.

Subject: 2004 Turkey Lake Regattas - Organizational Meeting
rowfl
Send Email Send Email

Dear Rowing Enthusiasts,

What do you get when you have the majority of the 2004 Florida spring youth rowing regattas scheduled at one place?   A GREAT opportunity to share ideas to make the experience better for everyone involved.

Hi.  Martyn Dennis here.  Buoy Man.  Crew Junkie.  Call me what you like, just don't call me late for dinner!  Despite my increasing work and family commitments, I am trying to do what I can to contribute to the upcoming 2004 crew racing season.

Having tried to help the sport of rowing in whatever way I can since I got of college in 1974, in the last decade I have evolved into a general support role by setting up race courses (mainly in Orlando and Tampa), and by officiating on race day, when possible.  I used to occasionally be a regatta director, I have given that up, since I found it is too much work to try to effectively handle both the water and land aspects of a regatta.

So, working with a regatta director who can handle the "land aspects", I have mainly focused on setting up water related items, such as launching docks, warm up areas, starting lines, the main body of the course, the finish line and arranging for officiating launches.  That's plenty to keep me busy!  And, I'm open to ideas to get more help on the water!!!

As things have evolved coming into this year, the albano buoyed system at Turkey Lake has become a magnet for regattas, hence there are TEN scheduled there this spring, the last one being the Scholastic Rowing Association's (SRA) Regatta, hosted by Boone High School.

Here is what I believe to be the complete list of upcoming regattas at Turkey Lake:

Date            Regatta                                  Host                      Regatta Director

Feb.     21    Novice Race                           Lake Brantley H.S.   Mike Adragna

March    6    Boone Invitational                    Boone H.S.              Tom Lineberry

13   Hood Cup                               Boone H.S.              Tracy Hite

            20   U.F. Regatta (name?)              U.F.Crew                  Ryan Ludick?

27   OARS Invitational                    OARS                      John Lamm

April     10   Orlando City Championships    Lake Brantley H.S.     Mike Adragna

17   Mayor's Cup                           Orlando Rowing Club  Randy Rich

24   FSRA Scholastic Champ.         FSRA                       Craig Sucich

May       8   FSRA Youth Championships     FSRA                        Craig Sucich

28, 29  SRA Regatta                            Boone H.S.                Al Smith

Now I am seeking your help by having all the regattas work together as a team to:

1) coordinate whatever we can to make things run smoothly for everyone's benefit,

2) make sure all these regattas do not overwhelm the City's employees and become a negative to them, (which really is part of number one), but one I would like to emphasize,

3) making each regatta better than the last one, ultimately to benefit the SRA National Regatta the most and

4) whatever else we come up with.

If you are hosting a regatta at Turkey Lake this spring, you are cordially invited to send up to four representatives to an organizational meeting this coming Saturday, January 31, from 10am to noon, at the Ecology Center at Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake.  Up until this past Saturday, it was formerly known as Turkey Lake Park.  At the meeting, we can discuss how to handle this name change too.  After the meeting, those who wish to can adjourn to one of the local eateries for lunch and further discussion, if so desired.

By representatives I mean that while regatta directors are invited, you may which to include at least one other person from your regatta to be able to get a range of ideas and input.  This could be a coach too, to get their perspective.  My thinking is to limit it to four reps per regatta, to keep the size of the meeting managable.

There will also be at least one USRA referee representative there too.  A parallel project I will be assisting on this spring is to identify and train new referee candidates, as well as develop a pool of regatta volunteers and launch drivers.  With the growth of rowing programs and regattas the past few years, we HAVE to do more to keep up with the demand for qualified people to help run them.

Prior to the meeting, I will be sending out an email with an agenda and some ideas to digest before we meet.  At his meeting, we can also discuss whether we would like to meet again, how often and when.  The purpose of this meeting is to begin to get organized as a group and to discuss general ideas, exchange ideas, but not get into detailed specifics regarding regatta management issues, which could be very time consuming.  An exception to this would be if the City has questions that need to be answered.
I have found in talking to several other people that they were thinking that coordinating things together would be a good idea, which is great!  My thinking is that as this all develops, the Florida Scholastic Rowing Association (FSRA) will develop a more active regatta committee and administer these aspects through their representative(s).  Along these lines, I have begun discussions of this topic with the current President, Tom Morgon of Leon H.S., V.P. Craig Sucich, and Treasurer Jamie Francis of Edgewater H.S.

I have also spoken with Park Director Bill Girard several times this past fall while I was helping to install the albano course.  (The outline is in, and we are on track for completing it by the spring.)  I have attached is a form that I designed for the park employees to get to know what to expect for each regatta and who to contact for further questions.  Please try to complete a first draft of it before the meeting on Saturday and bring it with you.

Please RSVP back to me this coming week with your representatives name(s) and role, so I can have an idea who will be there and who else needs to be tracked down and invited.  Feel free to forward this email on to people within your organization that may be leaders on your regatta team.

I hope 2004 is beginning well for you and hope to see you on Saturday!

Hi, my daughter is a 10th grader at Phillips Academy, Andover Mass. We'll be
in Vero Beach for her spring vacation in March and I wonder if there might be
a rowing program nearby or a coach so we could arrange a spring tune-up
program. Andover unfortunately doesn't have a spring-break crew camp, so
my daughter
would love to pursue something on her own. Any advice would be most welcome.

Brice, could you post this ad on FSRA.  We are still trying to get rid of

the old trailer.  I am going to try row2k again.

Space Coast Crew has a boat trailer for sale.  Trailer will carry 3 eights and 3 fours.  The trailer bed and tires are new.  This would be an excellent trailer for a small or new rowing program.

Just a reminder about the Advanced Coxswain Clinic this weekend.  The directions and times have been posted on the Stetson Crew Web page.  The location is in the Wilson Center adjacent to the Edmunds Center Gymnasium.  For those of you that attended the fall clinic this is a different location and actually easier to find.  We have close to 20 people signed up already.

Hello Everyone, My name is Joe Dobson and I'm very glad to be the new men's coach for the Sarasota Scullers Youth Rowing Program.  I'm coaching with Alex Alexandru and we are looking forward to a great season.  I've had the pleasure of meeting some of you at the recent USRA coaches certification that Charles ran so well at Stetson.  I'm coming here from Annapolis, Maryland where I coached at the Naval Academy as well as the Annapolis Rowing Club.  I did my scholastic rowing on the Schyulkill and at Marietta College.  I really love being able to rowing my single in the middle of Winter.
This year I have a men's quad as one of my top boats, so if any of you can schedule any mens quad races at your regattas, I sure would appreciate it.
I look forward to meeting you all and to benefit from your advise about rowing in Florida.  Joe Dobson

Hood Cup is approaching fast.  Please visit our web site www.2004HoodCup.com  there you will find all the information you will need.

The Hood Cup committee will take a firm stand and there will be no doubling.

If you can please send your entries early.

Since this is the first major race of the season it is going to be very hard to seed the crews.  I will do the best that I can.  I am thinking right now in the varsity eight events to row three heats the top two to finals and then the next two from each heat run a petite race, this will give the other regattas more information for seeding.  I am open for any other suggestion on this matter.
