Dear All,

For those that replied to my previous email thank you.
I am enclosing a web site dedicated to rowing shell buoyancy that you can explore and research. It will give more thorough answers and give better examples than you have asked me.

It also shows how the English rowing association (ARA) could be viewed as misrepresenting it's members - something I feel we need to be aware of since US Rowing is aware of this issue. If they are waiting to follow the lead of the ARA  there could be concerns for us and our athletes.

There are accounts of manufacturers that have and are making changes. Individual manufacturers know the specifics about how it could be done in their own boats so the next time you place an order for new equipment it is a good time to question them about this.

In the meantime the more informed we can be the better. Since safety is the number one priority for all of us I encourage you to visit the web site below at your convenience and add this information to your coaching knowledge.

Thanks,

Matt Kaminski

Dear coaches,
Attached you will find the list of rules for the regatta. There are a couple of
changes so please be sure to look them over. For those teams interested in
practicing on the creek, the launching dock will close at 3pm. For anyone
interested, at 5pm we will be taking coxes/coaches on a launch for a course
tour. If interested please rsvp so that we know how many launches will be
needed. Trucks must detach as soon as the trailer is parked. Same goes for
singles that are being dropped off. No cars/trucks/vans/buses will be allowed
in the parking lot of the center, only boats and trailers. Parking is available
on the 72nd street lot, there will be a shuttle running from the lot to the
spectator site on race day. Also, please remember that the boathouse will be
closed due to the construction. Only crew members of a boat that is launching
will be allowed in the boathouse area. You may have at the most 2 extras to
help with oars, etc...
If you have any questions on your way down, please call 305-582-5145

Have a safe ride,

Ura

This is a first!!! While USRowing has conducted surveys of a sample of members
in the past, today we are asking ALL members to help us do a better job of
serving the rowing community.

We want to be responsive to your concerns about the cost and value of
membership. But to do so we need information to gauge the impact of changes. An
on-line individual member survey was created by the Board and sponsorship
consultants to collect information on member services and to profile the rowing
community for potential sponsors. (NOTE: A separate survey is being developed
for organizational members.)

This survey has three sections, i.e. rowing, other athletic activity and
socio-economic information. Based on initial feedback from the first few survey
respondents, here are some things you should know about participation:

1. The survey averages 10 minutes.
2. Many of the questions require answers. Some answers allow you to skip a
series of questions. Others require that you provide an answer even if it is
only be N/A. This is a nuance of the survey tool that could not be changed.
3. There is space at the end of the survey for your general comments.
4. The pet questions at the end of Section III are real. They are asked because
two potential sponsors have identified pet ownership as a key to their product
sales and interest in sponsorship. While they are not about rowing, they are
about getting money to support rowing.
5. Survey responses will be presented ONLY in the aggregate to US Rowing's
Board, staff and potential sponsors. NO INDIVIDUAL INFORMATION WILL BE RELEASED
OR SOLD.

We have been through two tough fiscal years. Sponsorship money has dwindled
which places a heavier burden on membership dollars and has resulted in cuts in
some areas. Help us reverse this tide.

Information can help us both structure services that attract more members and
recruit more sponsors. In turn, we will do a better job for you in both
services and costs.

NOTE: The link below will only accept a response from your e-mail. If you know
someone else that would like to participate in the survey, there is an open link
posted on the USRowing web site. The survey closes Friday, October 24th.

If you're coming to the GatorHead in Palatka this Saturday, please submit your entry thru the GAR web site (http://www.gainesvillearearowing.8m.com/).  If you are uncomfortable with the web site, please e-mail me with the following:

  • Club Name
  • Coach Name
  • Contact Name
  • Contact Phone, address, and e-mail
  • events -number and name (read the posted list)
  • line-ups of crews for each event

Fees are posted on the web site.  Please bring payment and waivers Saturday.

The posted event order includes tentative times.  As always, these may change.

Registration closes Thursday night.   Late entries screw up bow numbering and will probably not be accepted.

Entries received so far are on the attached spreadsheet.  If you have already submitted entries (or think you have), please check the attachment and e-mail me corrections.

Thanks.  See you Saturday.

Some late questions regarding the Gator Head Regatta this Saturday:
  • Events on the schedule that do not say "Youth" or "Masters" are open to any age.
  • For planning purposes, crews in multiple races should allow two hours between scheduled start times.
  • There are a number of events on the schedule with no entries.  We will use this to maintain the schedule and accelerate it as long as no crew has two races less than two hours apart.
  • Some of you have had difficulty submitting entries through the web site.  Please review the attached results spreadsheet to confirm that your entries are correct and report any errors to stevepackard@....  Feel free to e-mail entries directly to the same address.
  • Registration closes Thursday midnight.

Thanks for your support.  See you Saturday.

To all Coaches and Crews,

The 1st annual Gator Head Regatta held in Palatka Florida on November 8, 2003 was a wonderful event due to the strong participation of many of your crews and the decision by your coaches to attend.  Gainesville Area Rowing would like to thank all of you for coming to this event.  It was a beautiful day and great to see all of you and your crews!

The results are now posted on www.row2k.com .  We would like to congratulate Sarasota Scullers for earning the most points and therefore, winning the Gator Head trophy for this event.  Our Head Coach, Bill Feaster would like to deliver this to you and congratulate you personally.   Congratulations to all of the other teams who obviously have worked hard this fall and did their best on Saturday.  It was great to see the novices in some of their first races and certainly an exciting day for them.

We look forward to sponsoring this event next year and will keep you posted on the date for 2004.  Thanks again for making this event a success.  We look forward to seeing you at the Sunburn.

Respectfully,

Anne Marshall

Howdy,

I just wanted to keep you informed about what has been going on with FSRA.

The Exec committee is currently reading through a document provided by
the folks at Stanton regarding our Constitution. As soon as we are ready
we will send it out to the coaches for a vote. (Thanks to Steve and Tess
for many hours or work!)

Leon will be using a new points system (thanks to Dan Newman et. al.) at
Sunburn as a dry run to see how things go. Dan spoke with many of you at
The Hooch. Once Sunburn is over (Nov 22) we will submit it for a vote.
**(Sunburn race schedule and directions coming very soon to those attending.)

Thanks to Martyn and company for working with Jim Buckalew to get the
albano course in at Turkey Lake. Jim told me that we have some
outstanding people here in Fla. and the course should shine for us at
Scholastics (after we race on it all Spring).

Please feel free to contact me for any other issues you need to discuss.

Sincerely,

Tom

FYI
Hi Tom,

My name is Al Smith and I'm the Regatta Director for the 2004 Scholastic National Regatta in Orlando next May.  I wanted to send you a brief note of "thanks" to the FSRA for supporting the 2004 Nationals by championing the installation of the albino course.

Boone Crew, and well as all of the Florida rowing community, should be proud of our 'first class' course.  As you may have heard, the #1 concern expressed by the SRAA Regatta Committee about having the Nationals in Florida was the lack of a quality course.  But with the support and leadership from the FSRA, it happened.  To that, Boone Crew is very appreciative.

Next Thursday and Friday, November 20 and 21, Matt Ledwith and Kate Godwin, President and Secretary of the SRAA, will be in Orlando to discuss our Regatta plans.  You can be assured we will proudly display the recently installed course to them and will speak highly of the FSRA, Martyn, and the many other outstanding people in Florida who turned a 'dream' into a 'reality'.  We'll keep you posted on how our discussions go next week with Matt and Kate.

But again, "thanks" for helping us to host the 2004 Nationals!

Greetings all,

On January 24-25 there will be USRowing Level 1 AND Level 2 coacing clinics.  There is a new twist added to the clinics this year.  USRowing, in an effort to increase clinic quality has authorized more guest speakers so the format has been changed a bit.

The goal is to not only certify coaches but to increase continuing education for current certified coaches.

We have increased the number of speakers AND subjects while condensing other subjects to make for more of a "convention" style schedule instead of everyone listening to one speaker the whole weekend.

USRowing has increased the clinic rates slightly along with the increase in the speakers.  People with current Level 2 or 3 certifications are welcome to attend the clinic at a greatly reduced amount (bring your own manuals) compared to those that are taking the tests.

Go to the Stetson Crew web page for more information.  As I get the speakers lined up, a schedule will be posted.

I spoke to the Resolute rep at the USRowing convention this weekend and they are willing to host a boat repair clinic sometime before our Spring racing season starts.  I just wanted to find out how much interest there was out there.  She said that it would be a few hours long and she would work with our schedule as much as she could.
Let me know,
Jamie

Please refer to Bill's (from Resolute) reply.  I believe we would have to put it up for a vote if we would like FSRA to foot the bill.  This would be my suggestion, but only for those coaches that are affiliated with member programs.

Dear Jamie,
I will have to check these date to make sure that I will be available. After discussing the clinic with the President of Resolute. He feels that $50.00 per person would be a fare price. We also discussed the possibility of also including a rigging clinic as well. We have an expert in rigging that also was the boatmen for Harvard for many years.. He would also be interested in also speaking at this clinic.  Lets keep in touch.  Thanks

Bill

Bill,
Charles Huthmaker at Stetson University is presenting USRowing Level I & II clinics on the weekend of January 24th.  I am checking with him to see if he is able to incorporate the repair clinic into his presentation.  If so, will that work for you?  Also, I forgot to ask if Resolute will be charging for this clinic?
Thanks,
Jamie

Dear All,

$50/person seems a bit much. How about a free clinic and in return Resolute can give a talk on why we should purchase their boats. The USRowing Convention will be held in Miami Beach next December 2004. All of the boat builders are present and repair clinics are usually offered at no additional charge. FSRA could request USRowing to organize a special session devoted to boat repair. Have each boat builder provide tips and tricks... Time savers.... Hands on repair... Question/answer type stuff... I would really like to see a panel discussion.. Get the boat builders together and fire questions... "top or side mounted riggers???"

Hope everyone has a relaxing winter break,
Dave

Dear Florida Rowers,

Tis the season for northern crews to come south to enjoy our fair weather and water.

If your team or a visiting team would like to demo a Kaschper racing shell, please contact Ted ASAP. His schedule is still fairly open. Be sure to let him know what boats and models you are interested in (eights, fours, singles, doubles).

Happy Holidays, Brice

Hi Brice,

I just wanted to give you a heads up that I will be in Florida during the week of January 10.  I have two deliveries: Tampa & , I think, Melbourne.

I am waiting for responses from some Florida programs to determine the rest of my schedule.

Dear Brice,

Thank you for helping me get the word out about our upcoming trip:

RESOLUTE'S FLORIDA TOUR 2004

Resolute Racing Shells will be in Florida again this winter scheduling boat
demos for January and February. At present we have arranged demos in the
following areas:
Tampa
Cocoa Beach
Miami
Wellington (singles)

Our representatives will be available to meet with any interested coaches
throughout the month. Our tentative schedule includes the following dates in
these areas:
Jan 2-5:
Tampa, Orlando, Gainesville, Tallahassee, Jacksonville, Daytona Beach

Jan 7-10:
Melbourne, Cocoa Beach, West Palm Beach, Wellington, Miami Beach

Jan 11-18:
Cocoa Beach, Tampa, Sarasota, Fort Myers, Miami

Jan 25 - Feb 1.
TBA

February
TBA

We can adjust our schedules to better suite your needs. We would be happy to
meet with individual coaches or groups of coaches, parents or board members to
explain what makes a Resolute different than all other boats on the market.

Please contact us if you are interested in learning more about Resolute. We are
also very interested to learn more about your programs. Resolute has spent the
last year finding new ways to help crews get the most return on their equipment
investment. Our flexible financing and lease/rent options make our boats
assessable to any size crew. The unequaled durability and stiffness of our hulls
make them boats you CAN'T AFFORD TO NOT OWN. Our current models include:

EIGHT PERSON HULLS:
Lightweight eight; 135-165 lbs. (avg. weight of crew)
Midweight eight; 165-195 lbs.
Heavyweight eight; 185-215 lbs.

FOUR PERSON HULLS:
Midweight four; 150-190 lbs.
(this design has been highly successful this year in all weight classes, from
high school girls to collegiate men)
Midweight quad; 150-190 lbs.

SINGLES:
Lightweight; 140-175 lbs.
Heavyweight; 185-215 lbs.

All of these boats, except for the quad, will be available for
demonstrations in Florida.

We will also be scheduling a repair/rigging workshop. Please contact Bill
SanMartin, our Service Manager, if you are interested in attending this event.

We all look forward to hearing from each of you. Thank you in advance for your
interest.

Sincerely,
Sue Hinckley
