I've recently gone through our boathouse and collected all sorts of old parts
that I plan to put in the trash next weekend (01/11). Old Schoenbrod rigger
frames, Schoenbrod pins, Schoenbrod seats, worn oarlocks, etc. If you think you
may be able to use any of this stuff and you can come pick it up, please e-mail

Today we received the notice that the city started
last week the reconstruction of the Antonio Maceo

The park does not offer all the safety requirements
to handle an important event, due to this reason the
regatta comission has been forced to moved the date of
our regatta to a further date.

The contact list and regatta schedule pages have been updated.

FYI: Since the Youth Champ Rules have been posted in late December, the page has had 137 hits and so far no comments/complaints/corrections have been made to the FSRA Executive Committee.

Don't Forget!! The first 'race' of the spring season, Southern Sprints, has an entry deadline of this Friday, January 24th. After that, there is a late fee and a space available policy.

Hopefully everyone who attended the FSRA Coaching Clinic this past weekend with Buzz Congram came away with new insights on how to make their teams faster.

Liolin know. He will be sending an email very soon. Any information on
housing or directions is available on the Stetson Rowing web site. You may
also contact me by email or 386 747 2825 or 386 822 8157. Since USRowing
has cut the Junior budget to $0.00, we would appreciate every one
participating in the camps so that we may choose the best athletes at the
lowest personal cost to each of us. Any one aware of individuals who might
be interrested in helping us fund the Junior National team, please contact
as well. Funding will be directed through the National Rowing Foundation.

Hello Everyone,

I hope your fall season was successful and fun. I am excited to announce the Junior Men's Identification Camp at the Stetson University Boathouse on February 1-2. Last summer I worked hard to run a fair, successful Selection Camp. The guys did a tremendous job from day one. Now, I am working hard to improve the whole experience for them, and to better our bronze medal in the eight.

It is my hope that many of you and your athletes will be participating this weekend. The camp will be coached by junior team assistant coach Colin Campbell and is a great way to involve your athletes in the Junior National Team process. We'll need to hear from you soon regarding how many athletes and coaches would like to attend. It would be a huge help if you would forward me your oarsmen's height, weight, erg scores, birthdate and side. It is important that your strongest eligible oarsmen attend.

We'll be happy to run an open camp and coach a large number of athletes. We are looking for the guys who are ready to compete this year, but also for the guys born in 86, 87 and 88 who may help a fast development crew. The goal here is to build their enthusiasm and ability to improve consistently.

I have attached 1) a tentative itinerary and 2) workout guidelines which I hope you find helpful. In addition to renewing their USRowing Membership, each athlete should also sign the USRowing Waiver with his parents and bring it to the ID camp. If you have not already arranged transportation, click here for Hotel and Airport Info.

Thanks in advance for making this camp a success. I'll look forward to hearing back from you soon. Be sure to let me know how I can help your athletes improve.

All the best,

FSRA Membership,
The 2003 USRowing Organizational Membership fee is now $500. I have talked with Nelson Lees from USRowing about some type of organization fee structure that would accommodate scholastic teams with smaller rosters and budgets. I cannot justify $500 and was hoping for some feedback (are you renewing? pros/cons?) from the FSRA membership.

I delivered some parts for Beth Martin (Jacksonville), and left out
the height stick! I'm gonna have to get a hold of her, so I can mail
it, but I do not have her email address anymore. Can anyone help me
out here? I need to fix my boo boo! Some thing told me I needed
coffee that morning...
Thanks in advance, to whoever.
John

Due to lack of interest the Advanced cox Clinic has been scheduled. Watch

Dear Mayor's Cup Participants Among You,

Following is an important scheduling message for rowers and coaches planning to attend this weekend's 2003 Mayor's Cup Regatta.

Randy Rich, the Regatta Director, will be returning from an out-of-town business trip late Wednesday night and will update the regatta information on the ORC website very soon, including the event times, sequence and possibly the lane assignments.

The weather forecast for Saturday includes a 70% chance of rain with some scattered severe thunderstorms, most likely in the late afternoon.  The wind is expected to be out of the S S/W at 15+ mph with wind gusts.  This will be a cross tailwind the way the course is laid out from south to north.  We will use the traditional finish line at the north end of the park at the fishing pier.  Unlike last year, the temperature will be in the high 70s, so hypothermia will not be a factor.

In a phone conversation today we decided that due to the inclement weather forecasted and a full schedule of racing that it would be best to REVERSE THE SCHEDULE OF EVENTS.  That way, the varsity events would be sure to take place and, with more experienced crews racing in the first races, the chances of keeping the regatta running on time from the outset will increase.  In addition, this should eliminate problems with doubling equipment and personnel rather than compressing the schedule in some other way on race day.

In the last week, the possibility of having the varsity events race a heats to finals format has been considered.  With the altered schedule, due to the expected weather conditions, a final decision on this issue will be made on race day.  For now, the first races of the day will be the varsity flights/heats.

Please notify those on your team and any spectators that may attend about this time change so that no one misses racing or watching a race.  And please refer to the ORC website at www.orc-rowing.com for future updates.

PARKING:  If possible, please have exact change ($3 for cars, which is a reduced rate from the regular $4 park admission, and $15 for buses).  A portion of the proceeds also benefits the regatta host.  Measures are being planned to speed up entry to the park early in the morning.

RACE COURSE:  The buoyed course is in place with plenty of room at the opening between the two parts of the lake.  Thanks to the City of Orlando and a week of weed removal, the challenges we have had with that part of the course will not be an issue this weekend.

BOW BALLS AND HEEL CORDS:  This safety issue will be strongly enforced this year.  Please have your equipment in proper condition.

STARTING PROCEDURES:  I cannot emphasize enough the need to familiarize your entire crew with these things:

1)  GET TO THE STARTING LINE EARLY and if the races are behind, be there on time unless there is an official announcement, so we can get caught up.  Listen to the marshal boat and get ready to move in quickly once the previous race begins.

2)  Approach IN FRONT OF your stake boat UPWIND of it, turn around NO MORE THAN 2 - 3 BOAT LENGTHS ahead of it, back in quickly and LOCK ON.

3)  Immediately have the appropriate person in the bow of the boat begin SCULLING (or prying) THE BOAT AROUND, into the wind.   STAY IN THIS POSITION if the wind is constantly blowing and KEEP TOUCHING IT as need be.   OVERCOMPENSATE A LITTLE, because the wind will surely blow you back to the center of the lane before the starting commands are given.

4)  Know the STARTING COMMANDS, including the QUICK START and the COUNT DOWN START.

EVERYONE IN THE BOAT NEEDS TO UNDERSTAND WHAT SCULLING THE BOAT AROUND MEANS !!!  Coaches, please spend some time before the race showing them this motion on the water during practice.

As an official, I can tell you that some coaches obviously spend some quality time with their crews on these items while other crews don't have any idea as to what the above few items mean.  We appreciate your coaching efforts in helping make this a good start to the racing season for everyone.

On behalf of the regatta committee, may I wish you all a safe trip and good luck on Saturday!
