The Sunburn will be on Nov 23. We are currently updating our web page so
all registration info will be on-line shortly. We will be doing on-line

Just a note that the Information for the HOTJ has been updated as of 10/7
with current team entries, race course map etc.

now so we can plan for food/tshirts/portajohns etc. The scratch deadline is
Wed. Oct. 23.

Howdy,

Due to some technical difficulties with our web page we have not been able
to fully update our Sunburn info.

The regatta will still be on Nov 23 up in Bainbridge on our deluxe straight
900 meter course.

After this weekend (Hooch), I will email all y'all (plural) all entry info.
Please refer to the Sunburn site via leon.leon.k12.fl.us go to crew for
Bainbridge hotels.

We will do all registration/adds/scratches/pleadings via email.

The schedule will be roughly the same as last year. Hopefully, so will the
weather.

Thanks for your patience, and a safe trip to Gainesville to all going to The
Hooch.

Tom

Howdy,

Now that the Hooch is behind us, it is time to send in your Sunburn Entries.
I will fill out an Excel spreadsheet and send out various editions. You
may scratch/add to your hearts content. I will end scratch/adds when I see
a version of the schedule that I like!

You may row your kids as much as you want as long as you don't slow up the
day with excessive hot-seating or really tired rowers!!!

I guess this mesage is directed at all the regatta committees for the spring races.

With novices now not part of the championship races are the regular spring regattas still going to offer novice events (not including the novice regatta) or will novices be shifted into the JV/3rd level crews as is the intention of the FSRA fall meeting?

I'm trying to get an handle on this so I can plan the next semester.

Thanks for your replies,

I'm looking to pick up 2 sets of sculling blades from Lake Lanier Rowing Club in
Gainesville, GA. If anybody knows of anyone who might be in the LLRC area and
traveling anywhere south, please send me their contact info.

Any help to shorten a 10 hour drive each way would be most appreciated.

Thanks, Brice.

Thanks for the many replys to help and especially to Charles Huthmaker for
making the side trip to Gainesville. Even though we all battle each other on the
water, it is great to see that off the water the spirit of friendship and
willingness to help is still very much alive in the rowing world.

I hope you all have a wonderful and safe holiday season. Brice.

Fellow Rowers/Coaches,

The Plant High Rowing Team in Tampa is looking to fill two assistant
coaching positions for the spring 2003 season. These positions would be
responsible for assisting me in daily practice duties and/or organizing and
operating the novice crew for the spring season. We row from the University
of Tampa boathouse on the Hillsborough River. Compensation for the above
positions is competitive and based on commitment. This is a unique
opportunity to be a fundamental force in a growing program. I ask that you
also might pass this information along to anyone that may be looking for a
coaching position.

Thank you for your time,

To say that football only needs 22 scholarships is ridiculous. Don't forget
22 players on special teams, as well as countless backups. The physical
demands that football brings does not allow a player to play every snap the
whole game. That's not feasible.
Football gets 85 scholarships, and that is too many. I believe 70-75 is
about right. My column last week does talk about scholarship distribution
problems in the NCAA. Perhaps you should read it at kansan.com.
I referred to "miss decent high school athlete" as an athlete that played
basketball or volleyball or tennis at the high school level, but didn't have
what it takes at the Div I level and are now rowing. There are several
instances of this at KU. Doesn't take away from their athleticism, just the
fact that they took on a new sport at the Div-I level. There is no other
sport like this at the Div-I level, and it is ridiculous. Try to pick up a
basketball for the first time and walk on at Florida State. You'll get
laughed out of the gym.
Rowing is spreading like wildfire because its cheap to maintain and has 20
scholarships to go toward Title IX. While I don't think rowing should be
eliminated from all schools, it is in way too many, including Kansas, where
there are about 0 high schools within 50 miles of Lawrence that have a
rowing/crew team.
The NCAA has major problems to fix. Thanks for reading my column.

Ryan,

It seems as if your anger is a little misdirected. Initially, you call
women's rowing a "joke" for allowing average athletes to participate in
a Division I sport under scholarship. Yet later in the you admit that
these women are "strong as bulls" and that their coaches "condition
these women until they puke." I'm not sure I understand you anger toward
women's rowing considering you acknowledge the hard work required to
become a successful rower.

Title IX is a way to balance the funding between men and women's college
athletics. You complain that woman rowers are receiving scholarships
that should go to male athletes, but you barely acknowledge that
football usually accounts for more than 50% of the overall athletic
budget. While around 20 full scholarships are earmarked for women's
rowing, 80-100 are earmarked for football. That is an excessive number
of scholarships considering there is only need for 22 football players
(11 on offense and 11 on defense).

The argument made for football is that it is a revenue-generating sport.
Therefore it is important to pump a large percentage of the athletic
budget into football. However, according to ESPN only 3% of all Division
I football programs are profitable. This sounds hardly like a very good
investment.

Do not blame women's rowing for some imaginary inequality you perceive
in the administering of college scholarships. I am sorry to here that
Jon Crider was not able to stick around and play basketball. Perhaps he
should develop his football skills. There are plenty of football
scholarships to go around.

Sincerely,

Christopher Pucella

Coaches:

On Saturday and Sunday, January 18th and 19th former Northeastern University
Head Crew Coach Buzz Congram will be conducting a coaching clinic in
Orlando. The FSRA has agreed to bear the cost of conducting this clinic and
admission to the clinic will be free to all coaches of FSRA schools and
clubs. This clinic will offer all of us the opportunity to acquire some
information that can be put to immediate use in an effort to elevate the
level of rowing across the state.

The clinic will consist of sessions running from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on
Saturday and from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm on Sunday. Some of the sessions will
take place in a classroom setting (most likely on the Rollins College
campus) while much of the instruction will take place at one of the Central
Florida boathouses on the ergometers and in boats. Buzz has agreed to
tailor his instruction to our needs, but the program that he has offered to
similar groups across the country is outlined on his website at
rowskills.com

Coaches traveling from out of town may want to begin making hotel
reservations. Meals and travel expenses will not be covered by FSRA.

If you and/or other members of your coaching staff intend to participate,
please reply to this e-mail ASAP with the names of those participating so
that we can coordinate facilities that can accommodate the entire group.

Additionally, Buzz will be available in the days both before the clinic and
after the clinic to visit your crew as a guest coach. The cost to each crew
for guest coaching services will be $100 per hour for the first two hours
and $50 for a third hour ($250 for a three hour session). If you wish to
take advantage of this opportunity, you must contact Buzz directly by
December 18 so that he can coordinate these visits and make all of his
travel arrangements.

Bram and coaches,

The Tampa City Council has been discussing some issues relating to
marine safety. Specifically "no wake", un-safe operation, and
enforcement. We have taken a very non-combative stance to avoid a rower
vs boater event.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has been present
to answer various questions. I was informed that the commission has a
boating advisory council. Does rowing have a voice on that council? Do
we have a FSRA member who has experience in this area? Has anyone gone
through a similar discussion in their community?

Dear David and Bram (and others)

I have had some experience with a similar arm of our city government, the Jacksonville Waterways Commission. I have attended on behalf of the general rowing community and more specifically for the Jax Rowing Club.  The JWC handles the same issues outlined in your email, and they also handle things such as manatee protection, mis-use of the railroad bridge (blocks boat traffic), creation of ramps etc. etc.  In addition to being present as a live-person (a "face") to handle rowing concerns, I have discussed with them the creation of  a pamphlet/flyer re safe observation and/or passing of crew shells.

I understand your "non-combative" stance as that has been the position of the JRC for quite some time (although there are those times when it takes a few members to hold down some of our more vocal members).

We also have FF&W members in attendance but I have never heard of a "rower" being on the commission. It would surprise to me hear that there is in fact someone so inclined on the commission. However, it would be a wonderful idea.  Let me know if you need any other info or if there is someone I can put you in contact with to answer other questions you may have.

Yours truly,
