Interesting interview where the ladies discuss the care and prevention of  injuries related to Rowing such as to the ribs and back. The interview  was held at NY Times headquarters 100 days out.

USRowing Announces Olympic Men's Four Lineup

June 04, 2012

PRINCETON, N.J. - USRowing is pleased to announce the men's four that will represent the United States at the 2012 Olympic Games in Eton Dorney, Great Britain, pending final approval from the United States Olympic Committee.

The lineup includes

Henrik Rummel

(Pittsford, N.Y.)

Gault, a returning 2008 Olympian, finished fifth in men's quadruple sculls in Beijing. He and Cole were members of the men's four that qualified the boat for London with its fourth-place finish at the 2011 World Rowing Championships. Rummel competed in the men's eight and Ochal in the men's quadruple sculls at last year's world championships.

"We have been training in this combination for a little while, but to be named to the Olympic team is a huge honor and one we are very excited about," said Cole, a nine-time national team member and Yale University alum.

Selection for the men's four was determined based on lineup evaluations, national selection regatta results and training camp performance in Chula Vista, Calif., under U.S. men's coach Tim McLaren.

In total, twelve crews will represent the United States at the 2012 Olympic Games. Three boat classes - the men's single sculls, men's pair and women's pair - will be contested June 11-14 at the 2012 Olympic Trials - Rowing in West Windsor, N.J. RE: FSRA Eligibility Policy

FSRA is unique among regional rowing associations in featuring a championship that brings together private schools, public schools and clubs. Since moving to our current approach eight years ago, the competitiveness of our members' boats has rapidly improved. We now have a world class championship that prepares our teams for the rigor of Stotesbury Cup, SRAA and USRowing Youth Nationals. Additionally, the move to a sculling championship succeeded in demonstrating the diversity of our membership. The recruitment of our rowers to Junior Nationals and into Division 1 collegiate programs is steadily on the rise, and the partnership will the Sarasota Community served to highlight our successes.

A critical aspect of our ability to manage the different interests of our private school programs, our booster-led, public school members, and our community-based clubs is having an effective eligibility policy that protects the interests of all three types of members. For the last five years or more, outside of preparation for the state championship, this policy has dominated the Board's time. Since our most recent revisions to our policy in 2008, our approach is outmoded and has left many members, including the officers, frustrated and dissatisfied.

FSRA By-Laws require that proposed amendments be circulated to the membership two weeks prior to our annual meeting. (NOTE: If you have any proposals, please contact me about the best timing and approach to circulate.) Our annual meeting format, and the two week pre-notice for amendments, is not conducive to a hands-on reworking of policy. As a result, I propose the formation of a 2012-13 FSRA Eligibility Policy Committee. This Committee will be tasked with overhauling our eligibility policy from the ground up, to consider approaches by other state and national organizations, and to solicit input from all of our members.

If you remember the flurry of email earlier in the year, you know this issue generates intense opinions. I believe its critical that the committee meet in person twice to talk through the issues in a professional and deliberate manner. I also propose a 2nd FSRA Annual Meeting at the 2013 Southern Sprints to debate and (hopefully) ratify the consensus proposals made by the committee. (NOTE: The changes would take effect for the 2013-14 season.)

2012-13 FSRA Eligibility Policy Committee - 13 members
  • Chair and Vice-Chair to be selected by committee members upon appointment.
  • 5 Executive Committee Members (President, Vice President, Treasurer, Recording Secretary, Corresponding Secretary)
  • 1 Scholastic Representative for each region (North, Central, West, South)
  • 1 Club Representative for each region
  • Two Committee meetings (proposed for Gainesville and Sebastian)
  • FSRA Membership Meeting #2, February 2013
The vote for the 8 regional positions on this committee will be held on August 25th meeting after voting for executive officers and regional reps for the Regatta Committee. Furthermore, I believe its important that the Eligibility Committee members be different people than the regional Regatta Committee Representatives. The issues faced by this committee are distinct from the issues faced by the Regatta Committee. Please contact me if you have any questions about either committee or if you would like to be included on either ballot.

Below is a recap of each member organization's designation. Please let me know if your team is incorrectly classified by region or organizational status.

Whoo Hoooo!  The deadline for entry in the last (local) sprint event of the season is rapidy approaching!

This Saturday is the deadline for entering, if you find that you need another day or two to get everyone lined up, just send me an email and I will make it happen.  We are working on the weather, but no promises for 70 degrees and flat calm!

Waivers--the US Rowing online waiver is not applicable for our regatta, so we will either need a paper copy of the generic waiver from regattacentral, or if you have a waiver book, please bring it so that we can check it off.  It is fine to bring waivers on Saturday a.m.

Payment--there are no scratch fees, or late registration fees, so it is no problem to bring a check on Saturday a.m. as well as the waivers.

I have inserted a copy of the T-shirt design this year.  If you look closely in the corner you will see that it was designed by David Bird, our resident artist.  He has graciously donated the Original Watercolor, framed and matted, for a raffle benefiting Adaptive Rowing at Halifax.  Tickets will be 1 for $5, or 3 for $10.  We will also be giving away assorted Halifax Rowing items as well as a regatta T-shirt, so come check it out!

As per request, I have moved the mixed Jr novice 4+ to earlier in the day.  I realize that this is not a typical junior boat, but it gives kids an extra race opportunity, as well as letting them see how the other half rows, lol!

The Mixed Jr. Novice 4+ has been moved to 9:30, right after the mixed Master 4+, so your juniors can double in the men's jr. novice 4+ in the afternoon.

Okay, I promised that it would be hot, and it was!
Halifax would like to thank everyone who competed this year, especially those of you who traveled great distances to do so (Charleston, it was great to have you join us, and we are looking forward to next year!)
This year was the most polite group of rowers that I have ever seen at a regatta, you are all to be commended. It makes for a fun day when everyone is happy about racing!
The last event went off 8 minutes later than scheduled, again an amazing feat by the referees and the coaches/rowers. Thank you for being on time and flexible!
The fastest raw time of the day was from the mixed open 4X of Tampa Training Center, S. Long, C. Murphy, J. Schmidt and H. Schmidt: 3:16.9.
We would love comments if you have any, please send them to powersq@.... (They do not have to be positive, we are looking for problems and suggestions for next year!)
Lost and Found: We have a pair of sculling oars, once you have unloaded your trailers, if you are short a pair of oars, give me a call.....
Thank you all for a great day of racing!

Fairview Fall Sprints

** After reading, please respond if you think you will be attending **

Lake Brantley Rowing Association is planning to host an end of Fall sprint regatta. It will be held Lake Fairview Park in Orlando, FL on December 8, 2012. The race will be 1000 meters long and well marked.

This will be a great opportunity for all coaches to get their rowers a taste of spring as winter training kicks off. Also, a great way to keep novice rowers excited and motivated through winter for their long awaited spring! Finally, it will give you (the coach) a glimpse of where your boats stand among the rest and how hard you'll need to work over the winter break.

We would like to know if you and your team would be interested in attending so that we can start preparing t-shirts, medals, and everything else! Please respond if you think your team might like to attend.

We look forward to hearing from you!

This is an opportunity for rising Florida seniors (and FSRA coaches) to meet collegiate rowing coaches from across the nation. Students are required to bring a photo ID with either a report card or transcript showing they have completed their 11th grade to be admitted. Sorry, no exceptions due to NCAA rules. There is no admission cost to attend.

Parents may accompany their student(s) but they are asked to provide a secondary supporting role. While the coaches want to keep the parents fully informed, their primary interest in attending this fair is to meet the athletes. Please give your athlete the first opportunity to ask and to answer questions.

Dear FSRA Board Members and Reps,

USRowing is offering a coaching clinic led by Kris Korzeniowski and hosted
by FIT on September 29/30.  For those who do not know Kris, he is one of the
most respected international level coaches in the US.  He is the "go to"
consultant of Mike Teti and many other of our elite level coaches.  Coaching
education is a passion of his and he is looking forward to working with the
coaches who attend this clinic.

This program is not a certification program (Level I or II), it is specific
to on the water topics, with an the unique opportunity to go on the water
with Kris and a crew that he will work with while all the participants are
watching from coaching launches.

Topics include-
1. Rowing technique on the water
2. Rowing technique via video analysis
3. Training programs, periodization, land training led by Kris and weigh
programs led by Casey Galvanek
4. Training programs from various successful programs from around the
country

RE: Annual State Championship Dates

The FSRA Regatta Committee has voted to hold the annual state championships on the following weekends.
  • FSRA Sculling - April 13th & 15th, 2013 - Benderson Park, Sarasota, FL
  • FSRA Sweep - April 27th & 28th, 2013 - Benderson Park, Sarasota, FL
Because of the popularity and success of the 2012 FSRA Sculling Championship, we have opted for a 1.5 day regatta in 2013. This will allow us to use similar progressions at both events. We have also opted to hold the regattas two weeks apart to allow teams that decide to participate in both events the optimal time to prepare.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me or your FSRA Regional Representative.

Thanks,

Dan Newman

RE: Florida Sprints League 2013

This will be the 8th year of the Florida Sprints League Championship. It will be held on Saturday, April 13th, 2013 at the Tampa By-Pass Canal.

Drawing inspiration from historical sources such as the Boat Race, the EARC Eastern Sprints League, and NEIRA, the teams in the FSL have sought to reorganize their season around dual and tri races. These races facilitate day trips rather than overnight regattas, do not require the labor and production of hosting a large regatta and can be held on a greater variety of bodies of water in any team’s hometown.

The Florida Sprints League, therefore, is more than a championship match-race regatta held two weeks prior to the FSRA State Championship. It is, and will continue to become, an approach to organizing your team’s racing season.

I can only speak to Capital City Rowing’s experience with this style of racing, but we have dramatically cut our regatta budget, our season is considerably more manageable because half our races are held in Tallahassee, and when we travel out-of-town we can make daytrips. No longer does the season have the déjà vu factor in which it seemed like we raced the same five teams on the same bodies of water every weekend. By adding shirt-trading, all our rowers meet and shake hands with their opponents. Our parents and our opponent’s parents interact more as do the coaching staffs. All in all, it’s been enormously positive experience.

The guidelines that we have asked of FSL teams are as follows:

1.     Race eights. The FSL Championship features the 1st 8+, 2nd, 8+, 3rd 8+, 4th 8+, 5th 8+, 6th 8+ and an open 4+ to allow all your rowers to get a race.

2.     Participate in three dual/tri/quad meets in the spring.

3.     Trade shirts. One of the best features of the FSL is shirt trading. The loser hands their shirt to the winner. The shirts can be simple one-color designs, but should clearly reflect your team name and logo.

We seed events based on participants. Visit www.row2k.com AND www.floridarowing.org. When we seed the FSL Championship, it’s important to have access to all the results.

While these event classifications may seem limiting, they’re actually not. The classifications are designed to fit your current boatings. For instance, if you have 1M8, LM8, and FM8, then you’ll probably enter the LM8 in the 2nd 8+ event and Frosh in the 3rd 8+ event. There is no need to rearrange your entries.

This regatta is a chance to get your States lineups 2-3 rows in the same lineups two weeks prior to the event.

The costs of the regatta will distributed evenly amongst the participating teams. The costs include course installation,  EMT, portapotties, and insurance. We'll divide costs by the number of competitors. We run a VERY low cost regatta that generates no profit.

If you're interested, or have any questions, comments, or concerns, don't hesitate to get in touch with me.

See you all at the FSRA meeting next weekend.

Thanks,

I'm going to give my own testimonial here... I was lucky enough to be coached by
Kris for about 2 hours about 20 years ago and it was one of my best rowing
practices ever. I've also been lucky enough to be in the launch with him and
watch his coaching technique. He is the rowing guru! I'm not even coaching or
rowing much anymore, and I would still love to go to this clinic. Just wanted
to throw my experience out there for those who may not know how incredible he
is. If you can make it, you should go!
