Subject: USRowing Rule change for 2012 - elimination of countdown start
mongo_oli
Send Email Send Email

Members -

USRA ref Bob Weiss has passed along the following rule change for racing this year; the major change is that there is no longer a countdown start.

The elimination of the "countdown" start in the US was recommended for a few reasons

-FISA does not have a "countdown" start.
-In large boat races with any wind the coxswain and bowman/bow-woman keep their hands up until the feel they have an exact point.  Except in ideal weather, it is infrequent in a 6 boat race, that all 6 boats have their hands down at the same time.
-Often in the middle of the polling sequence and/or the starting commands a hand was raised and the process would begin again
-As soon as the "countdown" start was announced to the crews and the Starter would told the competitors that "hands may not be recognized" the coxswain focused on keeping a point and readying the crew.
-The continual raising and lowering of hands a) delayed racing b) put added stress on the competitiors and 3) generally resulted in going to a countdown start.

The result is

-Hands "shall not be recognised"
-Races will begin on time assuming no other issues.  I realize that is a big assumption at the beginning of the season.
-The cadence of the polling will replace the cadence of the countdown
i.e. instead of the Starter saying,  5 (pause), 4 (pause) 3 (pause) 2 (pause) 1 (pause) Attention (pause) Raise the red flag (followed by a variable pause) Go! while simultaneously quickly lowering the flag
the Starter will say, Berkeley (pause) Hillsborough (pause) MRC (pause) Sarasota Scullers (pause) Episcopal (pause) Tampa Catholic (pause) Attention (pause) Raise the red flag (followed by a variable pause) Go! while simultaneously quickly lowering the flag
-The Starter and Assistant Starter will have the responsibility of a safe and fair start as has always been the case
-The coxswain will have the responsibility of keeping the point and readying the crew for the start
-The Judge at Start will have responsibility for alignment as has always been the case
-USRowing starts will be identical to FISA

As an American FISA ref stated "if Canadian Juniors can do this in open water races on bays with whitecaps our juniors should be able to do it also".

Please contact Bob Weiss if you have any further questions:

Subject: US Rowing Election for SE Representative US Rowing Board of Directors
Tom.Feaster@...
Send Email Send Email

My name is Tom Feaster and I have served as your representative on the Board of Directors of US Rowing for  the past six  (6)  years. I started my Rowing experience in Florida as The Coach of The Sanford Naval Academy in 1972 and was a former President of The  Florida Schoolboy Rowing Association in 1974 and 1975. Florida Scholastic Rowing was the successor to the FSRA.  I have lived in Florida and been an advocate of Rowing in Florida since that time.

Today,   I received an email from my  only opponent for this position. His name is  Bob Frank from Oakridge Tenn. Certainly, I would suspect  not an advocate of Florida Rowing. We cannot risk losing this position to an Oakridge candidate. It is therefore  important for all Floridians that hold  organizational voting  privileges to  vote for me ASAP as your candidate.

It takes time to  learn   the ropes within US Rowing’s unique political structure and I have finally gotten accepted into the inner circle within this organization. For this reason, I have become a listened to  spokesperson for our unique interests in Florida.

It is my goal  over the next three (3) years the following programs at a racing pace.

A.      Domestic:

(1)    The development of Junior, Collegiate, and Masters Rowing.

(2)    The development of Diversity and Adaptive programs.

(3)    The development of  strategies to recruit more referees to serve our sport.

B.      International:

(1)    Insure that our Elite Athletes have all the tools including the best Coaches and high performance plan to insure their success at World Championships and the Olympic games

(2)    Promote  Florida as the location to host FISA Regattas in The US.

My qualifications include a  Rowing career lasting five (5 ) decades including participation and high level performance as scholastic scullery a collegiate  sweep oarsman, and subsequently a lifelong  participation as a  Masters competitor. I also have  coached  at the Junior, College, Masters and international level.

As a Board member I have brought  Non-profit management and political experience related to Rowing as The current President of the Stewards Foundation, Inc. a Rowing organization in Tampa focused on juniors and inner-city youth programs. Finally as a two term  member of The Board of Directors of US Rowing , I have been an outspoken advocate for all our organizations in Florida.

Please vote for me now. The election materials are now on line at www.USRowing.org

Yours for Better Rowing,

Tom Feaster

As a reminder, Laura Simon is hosting a Coxswain Clinic in Orlando on January 15th. The information is detailed below.

As a note, FSRA is not able to offer a subsidy for attendance at the clinic this year. By adding the insurance policy last year, we have changed our annual commitments and do not have sufficient revenue to take on that event.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns regarding this matter.

Happy New Year, Coaches and Teams!

Lake Brantley Rowing Association is once again hosting the Novice Regatta @ Turkey Lake on February 11th, 2012. Registration is now open and will be handled through www.regattacentral.com. The deadline for entries is February 4.

As most of you know, this is a great first regatta for your novices to gain the experience of spring racing. Medals will be awarded per flight; the merits of doing so will provide great excitement for a young rower in their first regatta of the season. Like always, we will offer sweep, sculling, and middle school events.

We will try our best to cater to everyone's specific situations with regards to scheduling, so to help with that please try to get entries in before the deadline. If you need further details you can email or call our race organizer Linda Larson at LLindajlarson@... or 407-682-4525, respectively. You can also direct any of your questions to me.

Good luck this season,

Sorry for the email blast…If you’re not planning to attend Southern Sprints Indoor Rowing Championships on Feb 4th, feel free to delete…

Otherwise…

If you already have a group account or if you know your team has a group account or if there have been coaching changes in your organization and you need to regain access to your team roster at www.southernsprints.org, email me off line to get your account password recovered and sent to you.

There are several teams that have already migrated their rosters from last year.  It helps to do that as you don’t have to start from scratch.  Migration is only possible if you have access to last year’s data.  So, if for any reason you can’t get to it, let me know and I should be able to get you (re)connected to your rosters.

Let me know if there are any issues or questions to facilitate a smooth registration.

The latest batch of entries is up on the site.  Latest posting was Jan 24 around 9:00pm.  There might be a few changes that have come in since then, but no new groups.  If you sent me corrections last night, they won’t be reflected up there yet.

The main intent of this message is to make sure you verify your entries are at least up there.  There have been a few schools that didn’t submit their rosters but I never heard from them.  Regardless of whether you went through the group registration or sent me a spreadsheet directly, you should show up in the verify section of the site.

Please be sure to check the site to make sure you at least see your group up there.  If you don’t, and expected them to be posted, there is a problem and you need to contact me.

Coaches,

As it appears many of you have already submitted entries for this year's regatta, just reminding other teams that the entry deadline is tomorrow, February 4. We are already looking at the largest Novice Regatta yet, and so we appreciate everyone getting their entries in quickly.

The first version of the schedule will be released Monday (I would get it out sooner, but thanks to John Corelli and the Southern Sprints staff, I will finally be enjoying the Super Bowl in its entirety).

If any program is in a position to bring a launch (with or without a motor), we are asking for some assistance from participating teams. There have been some changes at Turkey Lake Park in the last year, and so the starting platforms no longer exist. Unfortunately, we at Lake Brantley only have so many launches to go around. Any assistance with this will be greatly appreciated. In exchange for your help, a series of hi-fives and thumb's up's will be awarded.

See everyone soon,

The most recent version of the schedule has been posted on RegattaCentral, so please verify your entries. I will continue to make updates to the schedule through tomorrow evening, so if you have any changes get them to me quickly.

We are still looking for launches/stake boats. By request of the officiating staff, we still need 3-4 launches and 2-3 stake boats. Please check with your teams and see if you can help us out; otherwise we will not be able to run the regatta.

Coaches,

This year's Florida Sprints League Championship will be held at the Tampa Bypass Canal on April 14th. With the growth of middle school rowing in the state, we will be adding a boys and girls middle school category that will either be a straight final or heats to final instead of the match racing format, depending on participation.  If there's demand, we'll offer both 8s and 4s for the middle schoolers.

Other than the middle school category, racing will remain the same: 1st, 2nd, 3rd and open 8s, and an open 4 category.  The entry fees will be kept as low as possible recoup the cost of putting on the race. They will not be used to fundraise for our program .  This race is intended as a championship for programs that have embraced the dual/tri/quad meet regular season, primarily in eights,  and not for programs to just fill a weekend on their schedule. There's no doubling. We wager shirts. Coaches run the race.

We're trying to get a head start on planning, so if you can please send me a note if your program intends on attending and about how many rowers you'll bring, it would be much appreciated. And if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks,

All About Adaptive Rowing

What Exactly is Adaptive Rowing?

Adaptive rowing is a specific category in rowing that pertains to
rowers with certain disabilities. Just as there are divisions and
competitions that are separated by gender, skill levels, and age,
adaptive rowing refers to the sport of rowing with disabilities. To
create an accurate portrait of adaptive rowing, it is important to
understand the history of this category in rowing.

The History of Adaptive Rowing

Veterans of World War II were essential players in the sport of
adaptive rowing in the United States. Taking place in Philadelphia,
veterans who were blinded from the war competed in an Army vs. Navy
race. This race was a starting point for adaptive rowing, and programs
would continue to emerge for athletes with disabilities. Early
proponents of adaptive rowing include Ted Nash, an Olympic rower and
coach for the University of Pennsylvania and Penn AC, and Chris
Blackwall, the executive director for USRowing. Nash dedicated his
time in helping bring rowing to people with visual impairments, while
Blackwall created the first United States rowing club specifically for
people with disabilities, the Philadelphia Rowing Program for the
Disabled. In 1993, adaptive rowing was demonstrated as an exhibition
event at the FISA World Rowing Junior Championships in Finland. In
1999, adaptive rowing was showcased once again at the World Rowing
Championships in St. Catharine’s, Ontario.

In 2002, the FISA world championships would begin including adaptive
rowing in their regular rowing program, and in 2005, the International
Paralympic Committee would vote to include adaptive rowing in the 2008
Beijing Paralympic Games. This vote helped popularize adaptive rowing
as a sport worldwide. As of today, there are 26 counties competing
internationally for adaptive rowing.

Challenges Faced in Adaptive Rowing:

While I have never participated in planning any adaptive rowing
events, competitors in adaptive rowing often require additional
assistance before competitions. Volunteers are often needed to carry
boats and oars and assist competitors into their boats. Those with
visual impairments may need further guidance to ensure a safe race.

Terminology is an initial hurdle in adaptive rowing. As you can
imagine, it might feel awkward telling a competitor to “drive with
[their] legs” when that same individual is missing a leg. Furthermore,
competitors who are visually impaired need a coach who can verbally
illustrate a stroke, as they would not be able to see any gesturing
motions a coach may use.

Initial racing equipment provided another challenge in the beginning
stages of adaptive rowing. Seats and mounts were unreliable and could
loosen or come of the tracks during a race. Fortunately, through trial
and error, new and adaptive tracks and improvements in load
distributions were developed so disabled rowers could compete with
minimal equipment problems. By the time the Paralympics were held in
2008, rowing technology for disabled rowers were safe, reliable, and
customized to the rowers.

The Path to Success:

For those without disabilities, the path in becoming an elite or
Olympic rower is somewhat fixed and structured. Learn to row and
progress through junior programs, followed by college teams and
under-23 competitions. The devotion of years and thousands of hours is
required for the skill development of success.

However, for adaptive rowers, the path to becoming a master rower is
much different. Many adaptive rowing programs are largely
recreational, and many adaptive rowers are only able to get out on the
water once or twice a week. While an individual without any specific
disabilities can simply head to a boathouse, get into a boat and row,
for those with disabilities, it is not always that easy. Much more
support is required for an adaptive rower, especially one who is
training for the Paralympics. Each adaptive rower is different, and
requires specific equipment modifications tailored to their needs.
Even two rowers with the same disability may require very different
equipment modifications.

Despite difficulties in adaptive rowing, all athletes, disabled or
not, share a common drive and love for the sport of rowing which
drives them to continue training hard and pushing through boundaries
and obstacles.

Classifications in Adaptive Rowing:

In adaptive rowing, there are several subdivisions which are called
classifications. There are currently four categories for disabled
rowers based on types of functional classification system: arms and
shoulders (AS), trunk and arms (TA), leg, trunk, and arms (LTA), and
the legs, trunk and arms mixed coxed four (LTAIDMix4+), for those with
intellectual disabilities. Officials are required to assess athletes
medically and functionally in classifying each athlete. Notably, to
compete in the FISA World Rowing Championships or the Paralympics,
rowers must be in one of the five types of boat classes: ASW1x
(women), ASM1x (men), TAMix2x (one male and one female), LTAMix4+, and
LTAIDMix4+ (two males and two females with a cox of either gender in
both fours). Men and women can compete in the same boat because there
may not be enough participants to separate competitions by gender.

Safety Issues:

Safety is another issue that should be looked after in adaptive
rowing. In standard shells, because the feet of the athlete are
secured to the boat, heel ties are necessary to ensure that the rower
can free themselves from their shoes in case their boat flips. In
fixed-seat rowing, it is much more dangerous for the rower if their
shell capsizes, as each athlete is held in place with up to three
straps. It is this reason that every effort is made to make fixed-seat
boats very difficult to capsize.

While adaptive rowing is a relatively new sport, as technology further
improves, and its popularity continues to spread around the world,
this sport will continue to flourish with the same drive as any other
sport. For all of you adaptive rowers, keep practicing hard and doing
what you are doing, because this article is for you.

All;

I have been asked to clarify our policy on the following question.

“ Can I enter a JV8 if I do not enter a Varsity 8 but enter a light weight 8?”

The answer is Yes… on the following conditions;

1.       The Lightweight 8 is the faster boat.

2.       No athletes from the Lightweight 8 may double up and row in the JV8.

3.       If the JV8 posts a faster time, or there is evidence of athletes rowing in both events –the results will go to a Stewards review and the JV8 may be disqualified.

“ Can I row my JV Boat  “up” as a B Boat in the V8 race”

We will take it  into consideration after registration is complete tonight. Send me an email with your request.

Dear Coaches,

The Orlando Area Rowing Society is delighted to once again host this event at Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake on Saturday, March 10th, 2012.

Registration, waivers & payment can all be submitted on Regatta Central.

Please note the upcoming deadlines:

Entries, Waivers & Payment Deadline:                Friday, March 2nd

Scratches due:                                                      Wednesday, March 7h, by 7:00 p.m.

Racing:                                                                Saturday March 10th - Juniors & Sunday, March 11th - Masters

Saturday's race events will take place on a 1500 m course with races starting every 7 minutes.

By request, we've added doubles back into the schedule on Saturday.  We will also be offering a middle school race. The middle school event will occur at the beginning of the lunch break and will be mixed boats rowing a 1000 m course.

While it is exciting to see the growth of the invitational over the years, this has caused the event to become a long day and difficult schedule to manage for our participants and judges.  Therefore, the decision was made to closely monitor the 2 event maximum per rower. While we understand this may not be the ideal scenario for all teams, we hope that it will enhance the overall event experience.

For those in need of overnight accommodations, arrangements have been made with a nearby hotel for special rates for regatta participants.

Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites – Universal Orlando

Holiday Inn Express

5605 Major Blvd., Orlando, FL 32819 Call 1-877-834-3613 and reference group code ORI

Lastly, to enable a smooth start to the day, boat trailers should be at the park and in position by 6:45 AM.

We are looking forward to a race day full of excitement and success.

We are asking all rowers, coaches and coxswains to get involved in the safety of their boathouse and organization. And we’ve made it easy for you to do so.

USRowing and the Philadelphia Insurance Company have developed a tool for all rowing programs to assess their safety policies and programs. On the USRowing website, you will find the Peril Assessment Scoring System (PASS).

This questionnaire is to be filled out by your club officer or coach. Once completed, it will score your overall safety program. This questionnaire covers ALL aspects of your program, from launches to potential cooking facilities. It is designed to get programs thinking about their practices and policies and to make sure they are getting implemented.

No penalty.
It is not a punitive system. There is NO relation between insurance rates and score on the questionnaire, this is designed to help you and your organization get safe and stay safe. There is also a reference library where you can find more information about safety.

The program was originally designed for health clubs and other fitness facilities to keep them aware of the issues that may affect their operations. USRowing’s insurance carrier, Philadelphia Insurance Company, wants to make this tool available to the entire rowing community, whether you use the insurance offered by USRowing or not.

How to do this:
One club officer submits the online questionnaire, but ANYONE is welcome to look at the questions by clicking the downloadable copy and discussing it with the appropriate club officer. We urge you to get involved and have your club participate.

We hope that all USRowing member organizations will take the time to answer the questions, and then focus on areas where there may be deficiencies in your safety program.

Please help your organization.
Ask your club officers or directors to take the questionnaire and make the necessary improvements. We care about the safety of all rowers and coaches.
