Below are the dates of the FSRA Championships.

Sculling Championship � Sunday, April 15. Benderson Park, Sarasota, FL.
Sweep Championship � Saturday & Sunday, April 28-29, 2012. Benderson Park

The date of the Sculling Championship was debated and�required�input from a number of members. The FSRA Regatta Committee considered other dates, but those alternatives all had problems. The weekend of April 7-8 is also Easter. The weekend of May 5-6 would result in three consecutive championship races (Sweep, Sculling, Southeast). Our preference would be to hold the regatta on Saturday, April 14th, but FIRA is holding their championship regatta that day at Benderson Park.�

I have attached a document that outlines all of the changes to this season's FSRA Championships. The FSRA Regatta Committee will update the Regatta rules (www.floridarowing.org) to reflect these changes over the next month.�

Please note that the Points Trophy is still being revised and will be presented soon. While the specifics values and trophies are not yet decided, we will have�separate�trophies for Sculling and Sweep Championships.

We have made a lot of changes to this year's regattas, but I believe this approach accomplishes most of the needs of our membership while maintain the highest level of competition.

Steven Cutler (Berkeley Preparatory School, Tampa, Florida - Class of 2008) has been nominated for the 2011 USRowing Fan’s Choice Awards – Collegiate Rower of the Year.

Steven Cutler/Princeton

Persevered through ongoing extreme medical issues – Thoracic Outlet Syndrome – and continued to fight for his team, making boats despite his issues and juggling time between practice and hospitals. Placed first (8+) and second (4-) at Elite Nationals, made the U23 team in the LM4-, placed ninth at Worlds.

I’ve attached a picture of Steven and his brother Andrew (on the left) at the Southern Sprints in 2004. Steven was in 8^th Grade at the time. Steven was also FSRA State Champion in the Boy’s 1x in 2007 & 2008. Both boys were part of the group that brought State Rowing Titles (Boys Lwt. 4+) to Berkeley. Steven stroked the USA U23 4x in 2010.

2011 ADVANCED COACHES CONFERENCE

This year is the inaugural USRowing Advanced Coaches Conference. It is a robust, stand-alone conference that replaces the old advanced coaching seminars that were held as part of the annual convention.

The Advanced Coaches Conference will take place on the last two days of the annual convention � all day on Saturday, December 3, and half of the day on Sunday, December 4.

The theme of the conference is �How to build a successful college or high school rowing program.� We have many successful programs working in almost primitive conditions, but we also have programs that seem to have everything who are struggling to create fast boats.

At this year�s Advanced Coaches Conference, we have asked some of the most successful coaches in the country to share their experiences on how to build a program, how to turn around a struggling program, and how they manage to stay on top for many years.

The 5^th Annual Head of the Giblet is fast approaching and we are very excited for this years� regatta! Please take a few moments to read through this email and share with your teams.

REGISTRATION closes Wednesday (tomorrow) with a $650 fee cap. LATE ENTRIES are open until Friday with additional fees:

� $10 per boat additional fee Thursday-Friday

� Increased fee cap of $800 for Late entries (Fee cap of $650 for entries submitted by Wednesday)

Ex. If your team has $900 submitted by Wednesday, and then submits 5 boats on Thursday, your team will pay a total of $700 ($650 at cap and then $50 for the 5 late entries)

SCRATCH FEE for scratches made SUNDAY NOVEMBER 13 is $10/boat. (ex boats entered before deadline and scratched on Saturday November 12 will just pay the entry fee, not scratch fee)

MULTIPLE ENTRIES will be allowed but we are asking teams to limit themselves to C entries. If space allows for D entries, those boats will be permitted to race. Confirmation of D entries will be made Thursday.

LIGHTWEIGHT will be using USRowing weights:

(1) A men�s lightweight crew, including a single scull (1x), shall have no rower who weighs more than 160 lbs.

I understand that Scott Sanford is one of the top sports guys in the NY market. Also, a big personality on World Wrestling, which probably isn't a sport, but it is a media machine.

Here is an update on The Golden Oars Dinner in addition to the press release below.

Golden oars has 30 paid tables. $300.00/person.

Golden Oars reached $60k in sponsorship this week with addition of Deutche Bank (Good to know they have an interest in Rowing)

Lands’ End has come onboard as a $15k sponsor of USRowing. The main thrust of their engagement will be referee programs. In addition US Rowing will partner with their corporate line to provide a referee store in 2012 that will include polo’s, dress shirts, blazers hats and pants.

Polo Ralph Lauren has asked US Rowing to submit a number for sponsor engagement for their 2012 budgeting process. I would say that’s a good sign. Their interest includes sponsoring the Ivy League Championships. Let’s see if one of our Florida organizations can develop their interest in Junior Rowing down here.

NBC is coming in for a site visit Monday at Mercer for television coverage of Olympic Trials, one hour show. Last trials they covered were 2000.

PRINCETON, N.J. – USRowing and the National Rowing Foundation have announced that Scott Stanford, Sports Anchor at NBC-4 New York, will host the upcoming Golden Oars Awards Dinner. The dinner, honoring excellence in the sport of rowing for 2011, will be held at the New York Athletic Club on Wednesday, November 30.

“We are thrilled to have Scott join us as host for our inaugural Golden Oars Dinner,” said Beth Kohl, Chief Marketing Officer of USRowing. “Scott is well known throughout the New York metro area and we know his passion for all sports. In 2003, he joined the WWOR My9 (NY) News Team and for the following six years was a sports anchor and reporter, which included hosting duties for the popular Geico Sunday Sports Rap. In 2008, Stanford added anchoring and reporting duties for Fox 5 (New York) to his resume. I appreciate the work that the SEYRA committee and you have done in order to make these positive changes to Southeast Regionals. In Florida, we have embraced the Freshman category, rather than Novice, for a decade or more. Ultimately, most Florida programs would support using Frosh over U17, but I think U17 is a vast improvement over the Novice category.�

As someone who began rowing my junior year and ultimately made the 1M8 as novice, I don't understand why upperclass novices can't succeed in 1st, 2nd, 3rd or Lightweight event. A senior who has been rowing for 10 months has no business, frankly, racing against a freshman. It's not good for competition and it devalues those rowers accomplishments.�

Having a category for 15 and 16 (9th and 10th graders) is a welcome change.

Since 2006 when the Southeast Regional Championship Regatta and the Florida Youth Championship merged to become the Southeast Youth Championship the regatta has and will continue run as a club formatted regatta, which follows the basic structure of the USRowing Youth Nationals. A majority of the programs in the Dogwood sub-region are club programs, whereas the Florida sub-region is�largely�scholastic programs this requires that the event packet be�sensitive�to the needs of all that compete there.�One area that I have spent a considerable amount of time on is the categories to use at the regional. The USRowing Qualifying events are easy, however, I have given lots of consideration to the non-qualifying events especially the "Novice" category.

�

I need to tell you all that any�rule that is in the packet has to fit into the "big picture". I have in my stewardship of this regatta tried to make it safe, fair and a enhancement to the championship experience for all involved. Sometimes the idea will not make sense at first, but please read, listen, and think of the outcome for the region as a whole. As the regatta administrator I have to have a way to police and enforce the rules that are in the packet. I have no mechanism or resources, other than �crowd sourcing� to verify either rowing experience or grade without causing programs a lot more administrative time.

�

Since the merger I have received a large amount of feedback that there is an unfair dis-advantage in the �Novice� category for scholastic programs, which often race freshman boats at the Southeast Youth Championship, against sometimes-older more mature novice crews. I have received several complaints and proposals to change the category to �Freshman� limiting the competitors to the 9th grade and below. I felt the history of complaints did justify bringing a reasonable proposal forward that focuses on this identified fairness issue and needed it to be addressed.�

�

The definition of a��Novice� is a coxswain or rower whose initial competition within that same discipline has been in the previous 12 months of the date of the regatta. This definition is advisory only. This does not factor an athlete's age, weight, or athletic ability. Which results in a very unfair environment for the athletes involved? The intent of this description is to provide a learning curve for developing athletes to learn the skills needed to become a boat mover. At the time of this regatta most �Novice� athletes have rowed for nine months or more, and many have developed pretty good boat moving skills. The description is not a safety net for fairness of competition. Once skills have developed, is it fair at this point to mandate a 13 year old racing an 18 year old? I really don�t think so. It has been observed that the team with the most mature novice boat normally wins the event. Additionally, we all have seen many 2nd year athletes that are younger, smaller and still in skill development phase forced out of novice ranks, due to the year limit, and required to compete against athletes much older �or experienced in 2V events. This is an unfair and unpleasant experience as well. Younger athletes risk the possibility of competitive bullying by older more mature athletes. The fix for our region needed to address this as a whole.

�

It was felt after having discussions with multiple parties that the effect of limiting a �Club� team to 9th graders would then switch the fairness issue the other way, with devastating effect to any possible club roster as well as limiting the coach�s ability to field a team effectively.�One answer could be simply split the event into a �Novice� and �Freshman� eights and fours and be done with it.� But, why would that event draw teams to the regatta, to race more of the same? The intent of the event is to bring the two sub regions together to compete.�Another may be a hybrid category known as Freshman-Novice.� Rowers who would be eligible for this category would include "Freshmen" in high school, regardless of years of experience competing against "Novice" who have been rowing for less than one year, regardless of age.� Which doesn�t address the issue of maturity of the athletes competing against one another.�How does this help develop our region�s young talent or showcase the up and coming young athletes in our region? I think the kids deserve us as�decision�makers to swallow our pride and egos and put some thought in the process and possible opportunity being made.

There are few ways to fairly classify rowers: by�Skill, Weight, or�Age. Junior� rowers are not ranked by skill, as are adult rowers that can be intermediate, senior or elite. The Southeast Youth Championship already classifies by weight to provide athletes a level and fair event based on weight limits. So this leads us to classification by age, much like the justification of lightweight events to give a fair competitive environment to the athletes involved. The classification by age would achieve�level and fair event based on age limits.� In an effort to clear up the confusion on Southeast Youth Championships eligibility the following the definition for�age was adopted this year.

An athlete is eligible to participate in the Southeast Youth Championship Regatta January 1 of the current calendar year in which the competitor reaches the age of 13, until December 31 of the current calendar year in which the competitor reaches the age of 19.�(EXAMPLE:�An athlete born in�1999,�IS eligible�whereas an athlete born in�1992, IS NOT eligible�to compete in the Southeast Youth Championship Regatta.) Within this definition, there is a sub-classification known as �U17� made up of those Youth who in the current calendar year do not attain the age of 17.

�

After reading, reviewing and seeking council, I proposed that a compromise of the U17�category, that limited the age but still allowed coaches to coach. By changing the "Novice" events to "U17" the�competition�is fair on multiple points that can be verified at registration.�Younger varsity or novice athletes have a level field of�competition against athletes their own age. There is now sweep and sculling events for the younger athlete development. � A team matters holistically for results toward team points. For athletes over 16, that are not fast enough to make your 1V they are able to race in 2V or 3V events against other less skilled junior varsity athletes. (I'm unsure why there is an�aversion�to allowing the older "Novice" kids to race with older "JV" kids in 2V or 3V events). Sure large teams like AJRA and Saratoga will have strong depth in the LT, 2V and 3V events, but I am not going to handicap them for being successful at doing what we all would like to achieve.�

The�argument�might be made that a newly established (within the first 5 years) programs is at a disadvantage in this structure. Bua new program is given five years to build, there is a rule that allows for the entry of a 1V crew to enter the 3V event for the first year, 2V the second year. So not until the third year that the team competes at the Southeast Youth Championships is an established 1V entries required. This and the priority of entry actually protect smaller teams. You can enter U17 and Ltwt events without entering a 1V. So for a team for example with 24 females and 24 males not counting Cox. They could enter a Wn 1V 8+, Wn U17 8+, Wn Ltwt 4+, Wn U174x, Mn 1V4+, Mn Ltwt4+, Mn U178+, Mn U174x. All athletes are on the water and racing their race, earning points, and everyone matters.

�

I can tell you Oak Ridge/ Atomic may be 30 years old but my varsity men have no rowers with more than 2.5 years experience. Additionally, a majority of the �varsity � men could race as U17. So the argument that is made for younger programs isn�t as valid as you might think. We all face no matter the size or history many of the same issues. We all recruit in a very football dominated region its tough to get little Jimmy to row but we all have to fight it.� My boathouse is the farthest north in the region. I understand the commitment that it takes to travel to Sarasota or Lanier to race. I have had a long-standing personal policy that everyone on my team races. So, the last thing that I want to happen is restricting kids from rowing or coaches from coaching.� I truly feel this move can lead to better retention, team unity, and overall success not only for your team but the entire region.

�

As the regatta administrator I am also hesitant to change the regatta packet once published. I find that it causes confusion and major issue down the road. I ask that coaches that are unsure of what this change will achieve give it a year and we can evaluate to outcome. I constantly work to make this regatta better each year and I feel that this packet is very complete and is clear on the parameters of the regatta giving a fair event for those involved.

�

There will continue to be novice categories at the Oak Ridge Dogwood Regatta, as well as freshman categories at Florida States. However, these will be the final event for these categories in the region. The Southeast Youth Championship primary focus is to be the qualifier for the USRowing Youth National Championship. The second and just as important purpose is to bring regional teams to compete as teams. Please read the packet and you will see that it all ties together, I had a lot of help going through and streamlining it.

�

As an aside, I should note that England and FISA has eliminated the lightweight youth rowing category (out of concern for eating disorders and nutritional health). I feel this as an�international�trend that may and could affect the US in the next 5 years. It has already been discussed at USRowing meetings as recent as 3 years ago. In the event that this happens, U17 events are likely to replace lightweight events at the USRowing Youth National Regatta. Our region should not only be prepared for this but it should excel in this category. Tradition is a great thing that I really admire about our sport, however, the atmosphere of sports is evolving and we must evolve as well. �

�

I hope that this answers many of you questions and allows you to see the reasoning and logic behind the decision that was made.

Thank you to all the teams that participated on Saturday at the 5th annual Head of the Giblet! It was record attendance and less than desirable weather conditions, but everyone worked together and hopefully had fun.

Attached are the final results and all points totals for the Giblet.

Congratulations to OARS (youth) and ORC (masters) for winning all points! We will coordinate getting the turkey fans to your head coaches in the coming weeks.

I am getting some feedback about the replacement of the "Novice" and "2nd Novice" categories to the "U17" category. I am not a wordsmith, lawyer or debate guy, I’m a rowing coach with bad grammar skills that has a great interest in providing opportunity to those we coach. I’m sure there are those that will read this and counter argue, that’s not the point I am trying to achieve here. I would like to explain this a bit more on the thoughts behind the following language in the Southeast Youth Championship package.

The Southeast Youth Championship is a sprint competition in the following categories:

• 1st Boat Events (1V): Events in this category are eligible to earn an invitation to compete in the USRowing Youth National Championship. Teams are allowedone (1) entry in the 1V 2x, 1V 4+, 1V 4x, 1V 8+ events and two (2) entries in the 1V 2- and 1V 1x.

• 2nd Boat Events (2V): Category intended for non-championship 2V youth crews. A 2V event may not be entered without entering a 1V event of the same boat class. Rowers that compete in the 1V may not enter a 2V event of the same boat class. Teams are allowed one (1) entry in 2V 8+ and 2V 4+ events and two (2)entries in the 2V 2x and 2V 4x.

• 3rd Boat Events (3V): Category intended for non-championship 3V youth crews. A 3V event may not be entered without entering 2V event of the same boat class. Rowers that compete in the 1V or 2V may not enter a 3V event of the same boat class. Teams are allowed two (2) entries in the 3V 8+ and one (1) entry in the 3V 4+.

• Lightweight Boat Events (LT): Events in this category are eligible to earn an invitation to compete in the USRowing Youth National Championship. Crews competing in the lightweight category are required to meet the weight standards. Teams are allowed one (1) entry in the LT 8+, LT 4+, LT 2x.

• U17 Boat Events (U17): Participation is allowed in a U17 rowing event until December 31 of the current calendar year in which the competitor reaches the age of 16. There will be NO Novice or Freshman events in the Southeast Youth Championship Regatta. Athletes that do not meet this category must be entered in 1V, 2V, 3V, or LT events. U17 coxswains must be used in U17 events. Teams are allowed one (1) entry in the U17 1x, U17 4x, U17 4+, U17 8+.

NOTE: Newly established (within the first 5 years) programs may enter the 3V event for the first year, 2V the second year, by the third year of the programs establishment a 1V entries are required at the Southeast Youth Championship Regatta.

Since 2006 when the Southeast Regional Championship Regatta and the Florida Youth Championship merged to become the Southeast Youth Championship the regatta has and will continue run as a club formatted regatta, which follows the basic structure of the USRowing Youth Nationals. A majority of the programs in the Dogwood sub-region are club programs, whereas the Florida sub-region is largely scholastic programs this requires that the event packet be sensitive to the needs of all that compete there. One area that I have spent a considerable amount of time on is the categories to use at the regional. The USRowing Qualifying events are easy, however, I have given lots of consideration to the non-qualifying events especially the "Novice" category.

I need to tell you all that any rule that is in the packet has to fit into the "big picture". I have in my stewardship of this regatta tried to make it safe, fair and a enhancement to the championship experience for all involved. Sometimes the idea will not make sense at first, but please read, listen, and think of the outcome for the region as a whole. As the regatta administrator I have to have a way to police and enforce the rules that are in the packet. I have no mechanism or resources, other than “crowd sourcing” to verify either rowing experience or grade without causing programs a lot more administrative time.

Since the merger I have received a large amount of feedback that there is an unfair dis-advantage in the “Novice” category for scholastic programs, which often race freshman boats at the Southeast Youth Championship, against sometimes-older more mature novice crews. I have received several complaints and proposals to change the category to “Freshman” limiting the competitors to the 9th grade and below. I felt the history of complaints did justify bringing a reasonable proposal forward that focuses on this identified fairness issue and needed it to be addressed.

The definition of a “Novice” is a coxswain or rower whose initial competition within that same discipline has been in the previous 12 months of the date of the regatta. This definition is advisory only. This does not factor an athlete's age, weight, or athletic ability. Which results in a very unfair environment for the athletes involved? The intent of this description is to provide a learning curve for developing athletes to learn the skills needed to become a boat mover. At the time of this regatta most “Novice” athletes have rowed for nine months or more, and many have developed pretty good boat moving skills. The description is not a safety net for fairness of competition. Once skills have developed, is it fair at this point to mandate a 13 year old racing an 18 year old? I really don’t think so. It has been observed that the team with the most mature novice boat normally wins the event. Additionally, we all have seen many 2nd year athletes that are younger, smaller and still in skill development phase forced out of novice ranks, due to the year limit, and required to compete against athletes much older or experienced in 2V events. This is an unfair and unpleasant experience as well. Younger athletes risk the possibility of competitive bullying by older more mature athletes. The fix for our region needed to address this as a whole.

It was felt after having discussions with multiple parties that the effect of limiting a “Club” team to 9th graders would then switch the fairness issue the other way, with devastating effect to any possible club roster as well as limiting the coach’s ability to field a team effectively. One answer could be simply split the event into a “Novice” and “Freshman” eights and fours and be done with it. But, why would that event draw teams to the regatta, to race more of the same? The intent of the event is to bring the two sub regions together to compete. Another may be a hybrid category known as Freshman-Novice. Rowers who would be eligible for this category would include "Freshmen" in high school, regardless of years of experience competing against "Novice" who have been rowing for less than one year, regardless of age. Which doesn’t address the issue of maturity of the athletes competing against one another. How does this help develop our region’s young talent or showcase the up and coming young athletes in our region? I think the kids deserve us as decision makers to swallow our pride and egos and put some thought in the process and possible opportunity being made.

There are few ways to fairly classify rowers: by Skill, Weight, or Age. Junior rowers are not ranked by skill, as are adult rowers that can be intermediate, senior or elite. The Southeast Youth Championship already classifies by weight to provide athletes a level and fair event based on weight limits. So this leads us to classification by age, much like the justification of lightweight events to give a fair competitive environment to the athletes involved. The classification by age would achieve level and fair event based on age limits. In an effort to clear up the confusion on Southeast Youth Championships eligibility the following the definition for age was adopted this year.

An athlete is eligible to participate in the Southeast Youth Championship Regatta January 1 of the current calendar year in which the competitor reaches the age of 13, until December 31 of the current calendar year in which the competitor reaches the age of 19. (EXAMPLE: An athlete born in 1999, IS eligible whereas an athlete born in 1992, IS NOT eligible to compete in the Southeast Youth Championship Regatta.) Within this definition, there is a sub-classification known as “U17” made up of those Youth who in the current calendar year do not attain the age of 17.

After reading, reviewing and seeking council, I proposed that a compromise of the U17 category, that limited the age but still allowed coaches to coach. By changing the "Novice" events to "U17" the competition is fair on multiple points that can be verified at registration. Younger varsity or novice athletes have a level field of competition against athletes their own age. There is now sweep and sculling events for the younger athlete development. A team matters holistically for results toward team points. For athletes over 16, that are not fast enough to make your 1V they are able to race in 2V or 3V events against other less skilled junior varsity athletes. (I'm unsure why there is an aversion to allowing the older "Novice" kids to race with older "JV" kids in 2V or 3V events). Sure large teams like AJRA and Saratoga will have strong depth in the LT, 2V and 3V events, but I am not going to handicap them for being successful at doing what we all would like to achieve.

The argument might be made that a newly established (within the first 5 years) programs is at a disadvantage in this structure. Bua new program is given five years to build, there is a rule that allows for the entry of a 1V crew to enter the 3V event for the first year, 2V the second year. So not until the third year that the team competes at the Southeast Youth Championships is an established 1V entries required. This and the priority of entry actually protect smaller teams. You can enter U17 and Ltwt events without entering a 1V. So for a team for example with 24 females and 24 males not counting Cox. They could enter a Wn 1V 8+, Wn U17 8+, Wn Ltwt 4+, Wn U174x, Mn 1V4+, Mn Ltwt4+, Mn U178+, Mn U174x. All athletes are on the water and racing their race, earning points, and everyone matters.

I can tell you Oak Ridge/ Atomic may be 30 years old but my varsity men have no rowers with more than 2.5 years experience. Additionally, a majority of the “varsity “ men could race as U17. So the argument that is made for younger programs isn’t as valid as you might think. We all face no matter the size or history many of the same issues. We all recruit in a very football dominated region its tough to get little Jimmy to row but we all have to fight it. My boathouse is the farthest north in the region. I understand the commitment that it takes to travel to Sarasota or Lanier to race. I have had a long-standing personal policy that everyone on my team races. So, the last thing that I want to happen is restricting kids from rowing or coaches from coaching. I truly feel this move can lead to better retention, team unity, and overall success not only for your team but the entire region.

As the regatta administrator I am also hesitant to change the regatta packet once published. I find that it causes confusion and major issue down the road. I ask that coaches that are unsure of what this change will achieve give it a year and we can evaluate to outcome. I constantly work to make this regatta better each year and I feel that this packet is very complete and is clear on the parameters of the regatta giving a fair event for those involved.

There will continue to be novice categories at the Oak Ridge Dogwood Regatta, as well as freshman categories at Florida States. However, these will be the final event for these categories in the region. The Southeast Youth Championship primary focus is to be the qualifier for the USRowing Youth National Championship. The second and just as important purpose is to bring regional teams to compete as teams. Please read the packet and you will see that it all ties together, I had a lot of help going through and streamlining it.

As an aside, I should note that England and FISA has eliminated the lightweight youth rowing category (out of concern for eating disorders and nutritional health). I feel this as an international trend that may and could affect the US in the next 5 years. It has already been discussed at USRowing meetings as recent as 3 years ago. In the event that this happens, U17 events are likely to replace lightweight events at the USRowing Youth National Regatta. Our region should not only be prepared for this but it should excel in this category. Tradition is a great thing that I really admire about our sport, however, the atmosphere of sports is evolving and we must evolve as well.

I hope that this answers many of you questions and allows you to see the reasoning and logic behind the decision that was made.
