Coaches,

I hope you've all had enjoyable and relaxing summers. Just wanted to touch base and start a few conversations about his next season.

RE: 2011/2012 racing--Capital City Rowing is in the process of building it's racing schedule for 2011-2012, and would love to start working with other programs we've traditionally raced in the past, as well as others that are leaning towards building their spring season around dual/tri/quad meets. Additionally, we have a growing middle school program and are interested in attending a regatta in late fall that would be aimed at middle school and novice rowers.  If anyone plans on hosting something like that, perhaps the weekend before Thanksgiving, please let us know.

RE: FSL 2012--The following message is more than likely something you've read before if you've coached in Florida the past several seasons.  If you have, the only pertinent information for you is the date and location of this year's championship.  If you're new to the state, please read through in it's entirety.

TO: Current and Prospective FSL Coaches
RE: Florida Sprints League 2012
This will be the 7th year of the Florida Sprints League Championship. It will be held on Saturday, April 14th, 2012 at the Tampa By-Pass Canal.
Drawing inspiration from historical sources such as the Boat Race, the EARC Eastern Sprints League, and NEIRA, the teams in the FSL have sought to reorganize their season around dual and tri races. These races facilitate day trips rather than overnight regattas, do not require the labor and production of hosting a large regatta and can be held on a greater variety of bodies of water in any team’s hometown.
The Florida Sprints League, therefore, is more than a championship match-race regatta held two weeks prior to the FSRA State Championship. It is, and will continue to become, an approach to organizing your team’s racing season.
I can only speak to Capital City Rowing’s experience with this style of racing, but we have dramatically cut our regatta budget, our season is considerably more manageable because half our races are held in Tallahassee, and when we travel out-of-town we can make daytrips. No longer does the season have the déjà vu factor in which it seemed like we raced the same five teams on the same bodies of water every weekend. By adding shirt-trading, all our rowers meet and shake hands with their opponents. Our parents and our opponent’s parents interact more as do the coaching staffs. All in all, it’s been enormously positive experience.
The guidelines that we have asked of FSL teams are as follows:
1.     Race eights. The FSL Championship features the 1st 8+, 2nd, 8+, and 3rd 8+. We also have an open 8+ and open 4+ to allow all your rowers to get a race.

2.     Participate in three dual/tri/quad meets in the spring.
3.     Trade shirts. One of the best features of the FSL is shirt trading. The loser hands their shirt to the winner. The shirts can be simple one-color designs, but should clearly reflect your team name and logo.
We seed events based on participants. Visit www.row2k.com AND www.floridarowing.org. When we seed the FSL Championship, it’s important to have access to all the results.
We’ll have five events per gender at the Florida Sprints League Championship:
1st 8+
2nd 8+
3rd 8+
Open 8+
Open 4+
While these event classifications may seem limiting, they’re actually not. The classifications are designed to fit your current boatings. For instance, if you have 1M8, LM8, and FM8, then you’ll probably enter the LM8 in the 2nd 8+ event and Frosh in the 3rd 8+ event. There is no need to rearrange your entries. (Please note: You must enter a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prior to entering the open events.)
This regatta is a chance to get your States lineups 2-3 rows in the same lineups two weeks prior to the event.
Some larger teams may have an interest in racing two 2nd or 3rd eights rather than an open 8+. For instance, you may want to enter a 3M8 and FM8 in the 3rd event. That is fine so long as we have capacity. Please indicate 2x3M8, in that case. If you have multiple entries they will seeded independently and will progress independently.
Some teams have fewer than three eights for a given gender. This is not a problem. Please indicate that you will have no third boat so it doesn’t get seeded. Additionally, the Open4 is for your four worst rowers. The Open 8 should be prioritized ahead of your four.
The costs of the regatta will distributed evenly amongst the participating teams. The costs include course installation,  EMT, portapotties, and insurance. We'll divide costs by the number of competitors. We run a VERY low cost regatta that generates no profit.

If you're interested, or have any questions, comments, or concerns, don't hesitate to get in touch with me.

Thanks,

Coaches,

I thought you all may be interested in an update on the Diversity Invitational,  The local press in Rochester, NY has run a segment on this event every week for the past month, either newspaper, weekend magazine or local tv.
It's what may be  affectionately termed  an “urban environment”. The city is attempting to rejuvenate the South Wedge and just removed the high rise government projects last year that stood at the bank of the Genesee. There has been a lot of small business investment in the area and the University and Hospital are anchors to success.
The mayors office has taken a serious interest in the regatta and will have video featured on their cable network. The attendance is light, with four clubs, this year. I suspect it will grow as this came about recently and some programs may not have had the travel budgets in hand to attend. US Rowing has  been working with JP Morgan to sponsor the Diversity Initiative, and this property has drawn renewed interest.

I Know that  diversity programs for juniors are popping up all over Florida. I will be attending the FSRA meeting later this month.  I would appreciate any of you that are coaching in these type of programs to share your interest in possible competitions in Florida for these kids.

Tom Feaster,
Director, US Rowing; SE Representative.

Hi Coach:

I'm Chelsea. I'm a coxswain entering her senior year at college, and I coach at
my junior rowing program during the summer.

I started a blog about coaching coxswains. I want to give rowing coaches
efficient, effective strategies to get inside coxswains' heads and make them
awesome. It's tailored especially for coaches who started out as rowers and who
don't have experience being an actual coxswain.

The blog is at www.coachingthecox.com. I'm contacting a group of high school
coaches from the northwestern region to join my group of testers. I'd love to
hear your feedback about the articles. I'd also like to hear any questions you
want me to address in future articles.

You can e-mail me back at this address; I respond to every single e-mail. You
can even subscribe to the blog and get each article sent directly to your
e-mail. The signup is at the top of the sidebar on the right side of the page.

Thanks so much for your time. I hope you like the blog, and I look forward to
your feedback and questions.

St. Edward’s is looking to sell one of our two Vespoli eights.  These boats were bought brand new when the rowing program here began a few years ago, and they haven’t been raced very much over those years.  We’re selling this one as part of our shift to fours, something we think is more in line with our small school and team size.  Boat’s in very good shape – I can get you photos and more details if you’d like.  We’re asking $10,500.  Please email me if you’re interested.

I have copied all of FSRA to avoid repeat questions while addressing Plant Crew
questions.

FSRA has renewed its regatta insurance program as a benefit for member
organizations. To be part of the program, the hosting organization must be a
current member of FSRA which Plant Crew is. The second and last step is to
determine the type of event each is. There is no limit to the number of FSRA
scrimmages (Dual, Tri, and Quad meets between member teams). As with the US
Rowing Insurance, these are automatically covered and do not need to be listed.
They can be listed to peace of mind and documentation purposes. Unlike US
Rowing, the FSRA policy does include quad meets in this category. For larger
events, such as the Halloween Regatta, that may also include non-FSRA
competitors (masters, etc.) there is a limit of 20 and these do need to be
listed. Currently 2 slots are already taken for the Florida Sprint League race
and the FSRA State Championship leaving 18 spots on a first come, first serve
basis. Last season we did not reach the policy capacity.

More details including online waiver sign-ups and full policy documentation can
be found on the FSRA site map at:
http://www.floridarowing.org/insurance.html

FSRA insured regattas provide the same or higher levels of coverage than the US
Rowing insurance program and it does not require US Rowing membership.

Additionally FSRA and NOARA are working with Regatta Central to provide waiver
verification system similar to US Rowing verification. This should be completed
for the fall races and will be in place for the spring races.

Thanks, Brice

Below is a question from my board about the regatta insurance coverage
offered through FSRA. Not sure who to send it along to. We want to
make sure we are budgeting correctly for Halloween regatta and any
quad meets we have. There was some confusion last year if we needed
to pick up USRowing insurance for some of our March races at the
bypass canal. We are currently planning four meets at the bypass,
including the head race we host in the fall. We would love to fit
these under FSRA's umbrella if possible.

Mike,

When you're at the meeting will you find out if FSRA plans to purchase the
regatta insurance again this year and, if so, what are the requirements
and/or limitations for participation.

There was some confusion last year because the FSRA website said that the
coverage was for 20 regattas as listed on the website.  Some of our regattas
were not listed.  Matt then called Jeb Rumbough (Mariner Insurance) who said
that all regattas between FSRA members were covered.  I think the confusion
was that the policy said that it was estimated that there would be 20
covered regattas and that was what was presented on the FSRA website.

The US Rowing policy automatically covers dual and tri meets of members.  It
does not extend to quad meets or larger regattas.  We had a quad meet in
March so we needed it covered by the FSRA policy.  Also, the Halloween
Regatta was covered by FSRA last year.

Any information you can get at the meeting would be great.  Please feel free
to call me if you need any clarification.

Thanks!

Coaches, et al:

The  Sarasota County Rowing Club / Masters  would like to announce the  3rd Annual Sarasota Invitational, to be held on Sat & Sun, Feb 25 & 26, 2012.

As those of you who attended last year already know, this is an exciting weekend of racing for Youth and Masters.  We had a full day of racing, great vendors, lots of great action on and off the water -- it is not just a good regatta, it is a great experience.  We are hopeful that more Florida teams as well as more out of state teams and individuals choose to place this on their early season agenda.

Last year -- in just our second year, we had:
Boat entries:   475
Clubs:              44
Cities:              33
States:              9

This will be an excellent opportunity to race the course on which you will be racing the  FSRA's  and the  SEYR's  this spring.  This course is perfect for your Novices (coxswains and rowers), and is especially beneficial for anyone who rows blind boats.

In addition to the best that Florida has to offer, we are contacting out of state teams.  In 2010, Texas Rowing Center attended, and last year Saratoga brought in a partial crew as well as Friends Academy, Sagamore Rowing, etc.  We are looking to expand this so that you can race different teams from many states.

I sincerely hope you will make the Sarasota Invitational a part of your spring racing program.  It is a great way to kick off your spring racing season -- we hope to see you here!

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me by e-mail or phone.  We'll be glad to help answer any questions you may have.

Sincerely,

RE: Athlete Eligibility and Team Switching

It was good to see everyone at the meeting this weekend.

I have included my email from earlier in the summer about Athlete Eligibility and Team Switching. Please refer to it with any questions about FSRA policy.

One thing I wanted to highlight, based on some questions I got this weekend, centers on FSRA preferences on the matter.

FSRA policy supports team's right to determine their own policy regarding the release of its athletes. FSRA does not have a preference about the policy. To be clear, local teams are the deciding authority. It is inaccurate to describe a non-release as FSRA's policy, when it is in fact the member team's policy. Instead, FSRA will not overturn a member's decision. It is an important distinction.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

RE: Questions about athlete eligibility; team switching

A number of FSRA member representatives, both coaches and Board members, and also LOC and regatta hosts, have gotten in touch with me over the last few months regarding the issue of athlete eligibility and team switching.

I would like to present the status of current FSRA policy on these matters as listed in the FSRA Constitution and By-Laws. The following guidelines will be in place for the 2011-12 season unless amended at the 2011 FSRA Membership Meeting.

Article 1, Section 6 of the FSRA Constitution outlines opportunity primarily relating to discrimination based on skin color, religion, gender, or other characteristics. Importantly, any athlete who is excluded from the state championship based on FSRA policy must be given fair warning and due process.
Section 6. Equal Opportunities and Eligibility.

The Association shall provide equal opportunity for participation in its sport to all individuals who are eligible under applicable state and school division amateur athletic rules and regulations and shall apply such rules and regulations without discrimination to all competitors; and shall not deny eligibility to any athlete, except after according such athlete fair notice and hearing as to the issue of his or her eligibility.
The following section outlines the two current ways for an athlete to violate FSRA policy regarding team participation.

The first prevents team switching within a school year. Because of the more specific and restrictive nature of Article II(1)(d), Section (1)(c) applies primarily to a rower for a non-scholastic youth program switching to another non-scholastic youth program. If a rower were to switch programs over the summer, he or she would not violate this policy. There is no prohibition against switching programs over the summer. (Again, to be clear, this is applies only to athletes moving from one non-scholastic Youth member to another.) Any rower seeking to switch from one club to another during the school year, however, must receive permission from their current program.
Section 1. Association Membership.

c. A student shall not represent more than one (1) Association Member during any one (1) scholastic year without written permission of both team's coaches, or adult leader in the absence of a coach, and approval of the FSRA Executive Committee.
Article II(1)(d) has prompted the most questions so far this year. This language straightforwardly bars a rower who attends a school with a scholastic rowing program from rowing for another program without the scholastic program's permission, AND approval of the FSRA Executive Board.
Section 1. Association Membership.

d. A non-scholastic team member shall not be in attendance at a secondary school represented by a scholastic rowing team without prior written consent of the scholastic team's coach, or adult leader in the absence of a coach, and approval of the FSRA Executive Committee.
Current FSRA policy does not provide exemptions to Section 1(d) for the following circumstances:
  • An athlete participated in a middle school program at a Youth Association member before attending a high school with a Scholastic member program.
  • A rower has more friends on a team other than their own schools' program.
  • A rower (or parent) prefers that they row for a Youth Association member with a different program or coaching philosophy.
There are, in fact, no exemptions to this rule listed in our Constitution or By-laws. FSRA Executive Board takes a very conservative approach to this policy. Please note the rule says "and," not "or" regarding the release of an athlete. FSRA has only overridden the lack of a release in a one or two cases when the original program violated FSRA's ethic's guidelines with irrefutable proof. Practically speaking, do not expect FSRA to override a team's decision to not release a rower.

Based on current FSRA policy, rowers who do not abide by either Article I (1)(c) and (d) are in violation of FSRA policy and will be barred from competing at the FSRA Championship and ALL events hosted by FSRA team members without approval of both teams' coaches and the FSRA Executive Committee.

In 2009, FSRA undertook changes to broaden our eligibility policy. FSRA purchased a regatta insurance policy for FSRA members and tweaked language in the By-Laws and Constitution. The impact of the policy changes and insurance policy is that FSRA eligibility regulations apply to all events hosted by FSRA members during the academic school year.

The same year, FSRA membership approved changes to FSRA Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct. Please see the language below:
Section 3. Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct.

Association Members shall promote sportsmanship and ethical conduct in its athletic programs.

 a. The student-athletes, coaches and all other individuals associated with the member program shall adhere to such fundamental values as respect, fairness, civility, honesty and responsibility.

 b. The Association Members shall educate, on a continuing basis, all staff members, student-athletes, and other individuals and groups representing, supporting or promoting the members' athletic interests about these values and any applicable FSRA Ethical Guidelines.

c. Recruitment or attempted recruitment of students participating for another Association Member for athletic purposes is an act of unsportsmanlike conduct and is expressly forbidden.
Historically, FSRA has taken a hands-off approach to most local issues regarding its members; however, as the Association has grown, members have increasingly sought a bigger role from the officers. This desire comes from concerns about actions by a few members that frequently violate these guidelines. FSRA members have asked for a stronger approach including sanctions for programs that engage in recruiting, dishonest behavior, or other ethical violations.

Ultimately, FSRA is only the collected interests of its member programs. There is an effort underway to bring some of these policies, and the broader mission of the association, in line with the current needs of the members. I strongly encourage anyone who wants to help direct the future of Florida rowing to become engaged in this process. The best possible outcome, however, is for coaches, parents and rowers to establish a teamwide culture of respect towards competitors. Ultimately, its in your program's interest to do so.

Do not hesitate to write or call me with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Dan Newman
FSRA President

Hey Everyone,

Hope your fall is going great.....

I'm putting my Hudson Pair/Double on the market, Ive retired from Coaching after a Decade and Im not getting down to the boathouse enough to make good use of the hull or to keep it maintained in the future as well as I have so far(it's been stored indoors all its life, rowed in Freshwater and washed regularly).

This is a great hull that our rowers have loved to compete in, It's a heavyweight 2007 and its in great shape inside and out(CCR's men borrowed the hull and placed Second at Youth Champs in 2010!).  I'm selling it for $5500 (obo), if you wanted to purchase it pre-owned from Hudson it would be $7500:

You can compare here....I want to save you $2000 off the manufacturer(not to mention delivery costs)!

Car Rack parts and Steering parts included with purchase....this is a great hull in great shape that is very versatile and can be a great value for your program as two boats in one!
Available for pick up at the Lake Brantley Boathouse or I can help arrange delivery at a Regatta.

Email me back, I can send more pics and discuss the boat anytime!

Thanks

Greetings Coaches and Rowers,

You are cordially invited to participate in the First Coast Head Race on October 15, 2011 in Jacksonville, FL.  This regatta is an excellent warm-up for the Head of the Charles and a challenging course for both rower and coxswain.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the race.

If you are heading up to Boston the following week you can leave your shell(s) at the regatta and we can bring them up for you for a fee.  Last year the trailer filled up pretty fast so the sooner you get your request in the more likely we will have a spot available.  I will get you the necessary paperwork once I hear from you.

We are looking forward to seeing you at the race!

TO: FSRA Membership
RE: Changes to 2011 FSRA Championship

This memo will outline changes to the 2012 FSRA Championship. I will also place the plan, and the philosophy underlying it, in a historical context.

As you may remember at this year's FSRA Championship, our regatta schedule grew to its breaking point. Because of the addition of new programs and the growth of existing members, we struggled to run a safe and successful two-day regatta under our current rules. We were able to make it work by heavily relying on Lane 7, by eliminating breaks throughout the day, and by shortening the progression in certain events. With seven new teams joining the FSRA in the past year, we expect the 2012 race to be our biggest yet.

To delve further into history, FSRA has a long precedent of holding two regattas in order to accomplish the disparate interests of our membership. In the 1990s, FSRA held both a fours and eights regatta on separate weekends. For the first half of the aughts, FSRA held both a Scholastic and Youth Championship on separate weekends. When USRowing required a combined Southeast Region Qualifier for USRowing Youth Nationals, FSRA made the move to a single championship. At the time, FSRA Scholastic members were hesitant to consolidate into a single regatta, however, they agreed if Youth members would abide by Scholastic policy (i.e. SRAA policy for lightweights, 1500M, Scholastic events, etc.)

FSRA modified the progression system for a two-day regatta with heats, reps, semis, and finals. This is the system we've used for the last five championships. This system however MUST change, however, because of the growth of our association and intervening events outside.

Other than our growth, the most important change regards SRAA policy. In the past SRAA has allowed their Florida Rep (Mike Vertullo, Winter Park) to determine bids to SRAA in events that the FSRA race did not contain. This year, SRAA required their regional qualifiers to contain all events held at their regatta or lose bids to their race. To reiterate, our current system of 2006-2011 was predicated on following a Scholastic model of racing.

At this year's annual meeting at Disney, FSRA presented a variety of ways to shrink or modify our regatta to be more manageable. (I have attached results of that poll to this email. I have listed them below in order of most to least popular.)
  • Two events (92.5 points) - Splitting the regatta was the most popular of the proposed ideas. It would allow FSRA to add events and add a more robust progression system including "B" finals in more events and to add many more sculling events.
  • SRAA (84 points)- As I've mentioned above, FSRA Championship has served as an SRAA Qualifier for more than 15 years. They have required FSRA to make changes, which include adding Junior Events and many more sculling events, in order for us to comply with their policy.
  • Tweaks (80 points) - This proposal was also somewhat popular, but would have required the elimination of events from the 2011 set of events, notably the Frosh 4+ and Pair, and would have required us to eliminate doubling between sweep and sculling.
  • Regional Qualifiers (48 points) - The least popular of the proposed ideas, this would have required Qualifiers to dictate entries at the State Championship.
The FSRA Regatta Committee sought to incorporate elements of the three most highly supported options and did not incorporate any aspect of the least popular option (Regional Qualifiers).

The attached proposal sought to achieve the following goals.
  1. Preserve the principle that ALL members race each other at the FSRA Championship.
  2. Further aligns with SRAA policy, as has been our approach for the last decade.
  3. Expands sculling opportunities greatly by adding a Junior and Lightweight 4x and a Junior 2x. Most importantly, allows sculling programs to enter a whole slate of entries and to be recognized with Sculling Teams points champion.
  4. Keeps ALL events that were offered at the 2011 FSRA Championship including the Pair and Frosh 4+.
  5. Allows more teams to enter sculling events by holding the regattas on a separate weekend. (Many teams prefer not to have their athletes row in multiple events at the Championship.)
  6. Creates a Sculling Points Trophy.
To arrive at a proposal that accomplished all of these goals required a lot of debate and compromise. The poll from the Annual Meeting proved helpful in determining what approach the membership supported.

PLEASE NOTE: As originally voted, the attached plan included SRAA's policy restricting entries to high school rowers only. The FSRA Regatta Committee will revisit that issue separately based on input from the membership. This plan does not any reference to middle school eligibility. Look for clarification on that matter in the near future.

I understand there are elements of this proposal that will disappoint or frustrate every FSRA Member. What you find frustrating, however, another team may celebrate. No one on the Regatta Committee was fully supportive of every aspect of this proposal. Please remember that the FSRA Championship cannot be all things to all people. The Committee has worked to reflect the needs of as many members as possible.

Feel free to call me with any questions about the adopted plan or other aspects of the Committee's work.

Sincerely,

Dan Newman
FSRA President
