RE: Florida Sprints League 2011

Generally, an email similar to this goes out in early spring, but I wanted to send it a bit sooner as many of us are in the process of setting our 2010-2011 racing schedule and it's important to highlight that there will be one major change to FSLs this season -- The requirement that teams racing at the FSL championship have participated in at least three dual or tri meets prior to April 9th.  This requirement is not to discourage teams from attending, but rather to encourage teams to embrace this approach to organizing your season.  It will also provide for more accurate seedings which have a heavy influence on the results, which in turn are a major influence on the polling done to determine lane assignments at our state championship regatta.

I can only speak to Capital City Rowing’s experience with this style of racing, but over the past five or six years we have dramatically cut our regatta budget, our season is considerably more manageable because half our races are held in Tallahassee, and when we travel out-of-town we can make daytrips, eliminating the cost of lodging. No longer does the season have the déjà vu factor in which it seemed like we raced the same five teams on the same bodies of water every weekend. By adding shirt-trading, all our rowers meet and shake hands with their opponents. Our parents and our opponent’s parents interact more as do the coaching staffs. All in all, it’s been enormously positive experience.

The guidelines we're asking of FSL teams this season are as follows:

1.     Participate in at least three dual or tri meets in the spring prior to the Florida Sprints League Championship.

2.     Race eights. The FSL Championship features the 1st 8+, 2nd, 8+, and 3rd 8+. We also have an open 8+ and open 4+ to allow all your rowers to get a race.

3.     Trade shirts. One of the best features of the FSL is shirt trading. The loser hands their shirt to the winner. The shirts can be simple one-color designs, but should clearly reflect your team name and logo.

We seed events based on participants. Visit www.row2k.com AND www.floridarowing.org. When we seed the FSL Championship, it’s important to have access to all the results.

We’ll have five events per gender at the Florida Sprints League Championship:
  • 1st 8+
  • 2nd 8+
  • 3rd 8+
  • Open 8+
  • Open 4+

While these event classifications may seem limiting, they’re actually not. The classifications are designed to fit your current boatings. For instance, if you have 1M8, LM8, and FM8, then you’ll probably enter the LM8 in the 2nd 8+ event and Frosh in the 3rd 8+ event. There is no need to rearrange your entries. (Please note: You must enter a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prior to entering the open events.)

This regatta is a chance to get your States lineups 2-3 rows in the same lineups three weeks prior to the event.

Some larger teams may have an interest in racing two 2nd or 3rd eights rather than an open 8+. For instance, you may want to enter a 3M8 and FM8 in the 3rd event. That is fine so long as we have capacity. Please indicate 2x3M8, in that case. If you have multiple entries they will seeded independently and will progress independently.

Some teams have fewer than three eights for a given gender. This is not a problem. Please indicate that you will have no third boat so it doesn’t get seeded. Additionally, the Open4 is for your four worst rowers. The Open 8 should be prioritized ahead of your four.

The costs of the regatta will distributed evenly amongst the participating teams. The costs include course installation,  EMT, portapotties, and Insurance. We'll divide costs by the number of competitors. We run a VERY low cost regatta that generates no profit.

I know that April is a long way off, but I wanted to get this out there as food for thought as we're all putting together our racing calendars.

I'll be happy to discuss FSLs with anyone interested at the FSRA meeting this coming weekend in Orlando.

Thank you,

Subject: Southeast - I need your input please

I hope you had a great Summer and just like you I know there is a lot going on getting teams organized and getting back on the water. I do have some unfinished business in reguards to the Southeast Youth Championship and I hope to get that completed soon.  As always I do value and listen to your feedback and I try to if possible use your feedback when discussing youth topics on the national and regional level.

I know there are some areas in the rules that will be reviewed for the Southeast Youth, also the discussion on individual membership as you know is growing and there is not any new news on that at this time. I can tell you that Lake Lanier in  Gainesville, GA will be the site of the Southeast Youth Championship on May 14-15.

As many of you know USRowing has put together a "Task Force" separate from the Youth Committee to focus in and identify areas of concern in the youth rowing community.

I am representing the Southeast on both groups. I need some feedback this week on the following survey questions.

1. If there was not USRowing and a National Youth Organization was to be formed what would be needed or wanted by the community?

2. What would this organization provide as a services and what would the organization need to include to service the average rower in their club as well as coaches?

3. What is the most important thing to them as the youth rowing community?

4. What value is missing from USRowing to support Youth Rowing?

5. What type of benefits would you expect when joining an organization of this type?

6. If you, (coaches or athletes) have a specific problem what do you see as a solution?
