The FSRA board wants to encourage and reward those that attend. We see this as a
benefit to the athletes, their teams, and to the regattas and their officials.
The clinic will stress safety, working with the referee, communication with the
coach, and observing the rules, as well as motivation, steering and race
strategy. This should all add up to safer crews and better events. We see this
as a win-win situation all the way around.

FSRA will refund $45 per coxswain that attends the Sunday January 17th - 9 am to
2 pm Coxing Workshop. To receive this benefit, teams must submit (email) a list
of names of coxswains attending by Friday, January 15, to me. Include the team
name, payable to name and mailing address for the refund check.

I will compare the attendance sheets with the submitted names and mail the
refund checks.

Dear  FSRA  and  FMRA  Members:

I am writing to you on behalf of  Sarasota County Rowing Club Masters  and our upcoming  Sarasota Invitational  on  Feb 27  on  Nathan Benderson Lake  in  Sarasota, FL.    We are hoping that you are making plans to attend our inaugural event.

We are very excited as our plans are all now coming together.  This regatta will give Youth teams the unique opportunity to race on the same course as will be used for the  FSRA States Regatta in April  and the  US SE Youth Regionals in May.  It will also give Masters rowers the opportunity to experience why there was so much positive buzz after last year's regatta there.  This course and regatta site are fabulous and exciting additions to the Florida rowing scene.

Much has been finalized over the last two weeks.  The proposed Event List is now up on Regatta Central, as are Fees, Deadline dates, and a link to the Sarasota Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Specific hotels which are participating as supporters of the regatta will be listed on our website within the next few days, and much more information will be available shortly.

We expect a major announcement about the buoy course any day, plus there are other site improvements being worked on based upon suggestions made after last year's FSRA regatta.  Much effort has been put into creating a unique rower and spectator friendly site and experience.

Based on several inquiries, we have added a Mens Masters Pair (2-)   and a   Mixed Masters 4X.    We have a small amount of additional flexibility in the schedule to add an event or two and if there is specific interest in something not listed, please do not hesitate to contact us.  Either Norm Thetford (noted above) or I can be reached via e-mail or phone if anyone has any questions.

Based on discussions over the last two months with Youth and Masters clubs, we expect this to be a very well attended regatta, and are looking forward to a fantastic inaugural experience for everyone.  Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help.  We look forward to seeing everyone on Sat, Feb 27, 2010.

Sincerely,

To all coaches –

Southern Sprints is coming up a little quicker than in previous years – race
day is January 31st with the deadline for entry January 20th.

It will be even more critical to get all team rosters updated and submitted on
the southernsprints.org web site.

I will make an attempt to assure that all coach contacts are current by cross
referencing with the FSRA contact list.

On the site, when you click on submit to send in your roster, you may end up
with another submit button (small code bug). Make sure you click on that
second submit button. Unless you receive confirmation that your entry was
sent in, I don’t have it.

If you don't already have an account or forgot your password from previous
years on the Southern Sprints site, let me know.

Does anyone in the FSRA community have Wednesday, February 3, open to attend this event? FSRA has been asked for representatives and with continuous rumors of registration fees being required on all our rowing / racing shells, I think we definitely need someone to represent our 1500 members and rowing interests in general. Please let me know if you are available to attend.

All -

Sorry for the "spamish" blast, but there are 2 more days before the
registration deadline for Southern Sprints. I see that many schools have
migrated their rosters and are prepping them for submission, but there are
several who haven't touched them yet (at least in the on-line database).

I know there are always coaching changes and such, and lapses can happen, so I
am just getting in touch with the active body to make sure everyone is aware
of the schedule (at least those who are planning on attending).

The list that follows is the list of schools who attended sprints last year
but who haven touched their rosters yet. I would ask that the current head
coach of each of these teams please get in touch with me regarding your
participation status at sprints (are you planning on coming/not coming?):

Subject: Start Line Instructions
brice.crossley@...
Send Email Send Email

Coaches, Coxswains, and Rowers,

I was recently reminded of the number of crews that have difficulties maneuvering around and locking onto a stake boat. Learning to row means crews should be proficient in all aspects of rowing.  With many of our regattas having a tight race schedule, referees do not have the luxury of time to coax/coach boats to the start line.  If the starter feels, that after a reasonable period of time,  a crew’s inability to control their boat may present a hazard to other competitors, they will be removed from the race. We will not delay the whole regatta because a crew lacks these skills.  Running on time isn’t everything, but safety is. A few drills on backing and sculling a few times will go a long way towards eliminating frustrations for the crews and refs and having a safe and fair regatta.

With this forewarning, please review the following.

Start Line Instructions

Nothing starts your team off on the wrong side of a referee faster than not being able to maneuver a boat in the starting area. To keep relations between officials and crews on a positive level, it helps if crews and coxswains come to the start line with prior experience on:

1)      how to back their boat to a starting platform/stake boat and;

2)      how to scull the bow around into the wind to maintain their point.

Coaches should make sure ALL crew members (not just those who normally sit in the bow half of the boat) know how to do these maneuvers prior to attending any race event.

Item 1 - Backing a Boat to a Starting Platform/Stake Boat

Coaches, please take a few minutes with each of your crews and have them back their boat into your hands while you are sitting in your anchored coaching launch and/or on your dock. To make this drill more realistic, try doing it on a day when there is wind.

On race day (for side entry race courses):

1)      Boats should enter the starting area in lane number order, with the far lane entering first. Hopefully a course marshal will be there to assist with this.

2)      Boats should enter on the race course side of the stake boats. Don't go behind the stake boats, otherwise you might get tangled up in the anchor lines.

3)      Boats should remain within about a boat length of the stake boats while crossing to their lane. If you entered in lane order (#1 above), you can stay close to the stake boats and not have to back down very far.

4)      Wind direction will determine when boats should stop and spin and from what direction boats should back into their stake boat. If there is a head or cross wind on the course, you want to use the wind to help push you into your stake boat. This last point about wind direction is misunderstood by many crews and as a result they have a lot of needless sculling to do to bring the bow of their boat around into the wind.

Here is a helpful article: http://row2k.com/columns/index.cfm?action=read&ID=242

Item 2 - Sculling the Boat’s Bow Around into the Wind / Keeping Your Point

First a big don’t: never use all oars on one side to scull the bow around. That is the quickest way to roll a boat over.

Coaches, if there is a head or cross wind on the course, you need to instruct your crews that as soon as they are locked on the stake boat they need to keep their point. And this does not mean pointing straight down the race course, especially in a cross wind. They need to keep their bow pointed into the wind until just before the start of their race.  This is best accomplished by sculling the bow around which moves the boat sideways instead of pulling it forward as a normal rowing stroke would do.

1)      Pass one oar (in an eight, you can use 2 or 3 oars on the same side) to the rower in front of you: bow seat to 2 seat, or 2 seat to 3 seat.

2)      With the arm fully extended over the side of the boat, take short strokes next to the hull (see attached photos).

3)   In the 2 pictures attached to this email, notice the hands stay in front of the body just like in normal rowing.

Here is another helpful article: http://row2k.com/columns/index.cfm?action=read&ID=255

Thanks and good luck with your spring racing season.

Lee and John,

Since 2006, I have served as the Male Vice President of USRowing, and my position is currently up for re-election.  I would like to continue to represent the individual members of USRowing and specifically the USRowing Members in the National Capital/northern Virginia areas and in scholastic rowing.  I am asking for your support and vote.   I am also asking for your support in getting the individual USRowing members in the Northern Virginia/Capital area out to vote.

Rowing is experiencing phenomenal growth at all levels. With the initiatives that USRowing is taking in the areas of youth, collegiate, masters rowing and diversity, it is also on the verge of unprecedented growth.  Key to the success of these initiatives are improved coaching education, expanding the registered regatta program to provide safe and fair competitive opportunities, and building, developing and supporting our referee corps.  I am committed to seeing that USRowing follows through these initiatives.

As the Executive Director of the Princeton National Rowing Association, I am very involved in the Mercer Juniors, Peddie, Lawrenceville and Hun rowing programs.  This involvement extends to the regatta management for scholastic and junior regattas.  This gives me a unique understanding of the issues faced by juniors and regatta organizers which allows me to be an effective advocate for groups like the Northern Virginia Scholastic rowing organizations and the individual members of USRowing represented by your groups..

My qualifications are:

-          Rower at collegiate, open and masters level for 29 years

-          USRowing Referee for over 20 years, 11 years as an international referee

o        Chief Referee of multiple regattas including the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Trials and the 2006 FISA Masters Regatta in Princeton

-          Member of USRowing’s Referee Committee 1992-2002

o        Chair 1998-2002

o        Secretary 1994-1998

-          USRowing Board of Directors Male Vice President since 2006,

All (who are racing this weekend at the Sprints)

Attached is a parking and traffic pattern map for the Florida Tech campus
(north points to the left). Because of construction just south of the
Clemente center, there is an entire section of parking that is no longer
available. Please see below for additional information and distribute to
your bus drivers and parents as needed.

Regards
John

Bus drop off can still be at Clemente, follow along that path in front of
Clemente and maneuver around the curb just south of Clemente. On the Map,
the bus can follow the road to the spot on the map that says "Baseball,
Soccer, and Softball parking" for the bus parking.

Between that section of Parking and the baseball field is a grass lot that
is used for over flow parking when baseball, softball, and soccer play. That
section is always open and the opening is located where #52 is at the map.
Those two spots are going to be the best for parking buses.

Hey All,

Sorry this has taken a while but We wanted to work in the Sculling events(6 more events) with out making the day incredibly long and still give our race officials a full hour for lunch.

Again,  Entries are due 2/6 (Saturday).

attached is the Novice Regatta tentative schedule.

Novice Scullers are anyone who is in their first year of sculling regardless of years of sweep!

The Schedule may contract based upon entries, I believe I gave enough flights to cover entries so hopefully the day wont go longer.  We are going off of an alternating schedule of 12/15 min centers which makes the times seem a bit odd but helps us in case we contract flights to give us some leeway to keep things on track.

Also, the Company We ordered our medals from is having some trouble fulfilling our second order for more medals after we added the sculling events so they are on back order as of now, We will medal by heat for the Sweep events and will have to send you the Sculling medals.

If you are entering a Middle School 8 please email me and let me know.

We look forward to seeing you here in Orlando at Turkey Lake for the Novice Regatta, its a great chance to get your novices some race experience before spring racing commences!

Dear  Sarasota  Invitational  Attendee:

We've had questions recently regarding the following two items:

1.    MIDDLE  SCHOOL  EVENTS:

>    These scrimmage races are offered with a significantly reduced lower entry fee.
>    These are Open gender races.  Your crew can be all Boys, all Girls, or Mixed gender crews.
>    If you let us know the gender composition of your boat, we will try to pair up similar boats.
>    Since these are scrimmage races, there will be no medals  -  we do not want to impact
      anyone's Novice eligibility.
>    These races will be held during Lunch Break.

2.    RACING  SCHEDULE:

>   Many coaches have concern about entries due to schedule changes.
>   We have carefully scrutinized the schedule and expect virtually no change.
>   We have done this to allow you to create your boatings without concern of unnecessary
Scratch Fees due to late schedule changes.
>   We want you to enter races in our regatta with confidence in the schedule.
>   Therefore, the Order of Events currently listed on Regatta Central will remain 99% as shown.

If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.  We're here to help.

FSRA, Members

Many thanks for all of you who voted in the recent elections.

1. Elections are completed, results will be posted tomorrow after all
candidates are notified. The electronic voting seems to work well. Few to no qualification issues for
voters and the participation was as high as 72 orgs in one region and 600
individual  member votes  in one race.

How about Oklahoma?

2 . OKC marketing: USRowing, USOC and Canoe Kayak jointly purchased a half
page Sunday ad thanking the OKC voters for supporting the Olympic movement
and passing MAP3. (This was our idea originally but we couldn't cover the ad
cost alone in 2009)  The result from the vote was a $50 million tax fund to
overhaul the river course, create a finish tower and implement the next
stage of the master plan for OKC riverfront. This complements the three new
boathouses coming online later 2010. Ad attached.

Youth Rowing news in the Northeast

 3.  Youth National qualifiers NE and MA: USRowing has created two new owned
events.
http://www.usrowing.org/News_Media/PressReleases/detail.aspx?nws_lKey=784

The NEMA qualifier has divided into the NE and the MA qualifiers, both are
USRowing owned and will require individual membership.
US ROWING is  seeking officials outside the regions to supplement the ranks we have in the
MA and NE.

Great news on our youth diversity initiatives:
4.  America Rows. Later this afternoon, USRowing will issue a press release
unveiling the America Rows inclusion initiative. Parallel to this release
will be the announcement of a multi-year partnership with Hop Sport, a
relationship that will put rowing in front of literally millions of school
children as part of a multi media health and sports education piece. These
are just the initial steps along the path of greater diversity for our
sport.

5 . New Sponsor: Rudy Project comes on board this month as a new sponsor for
in-kind benefits to the team but also a member discount on eyewear and
helmets of 40%. more information:
http://www.usrowing.org/News_Media/PressReleases/detail.aspx?nws_lKey=785

6 . Master Survey is currently up and online.

Communications is building out several opportunities for our
athletes to become more visible through community appearances this spring
and summer. Last month, we quickly assembled two athletes for a meet and
greet at the Bridgewater Apple store, where a Beijing Olympics photography
seminar was being held. This was the result of us tacking on to an Olympic
themed event that staff became aware of through other contacts.

Yours for better Rowing,

Tom Feaster

Brice,

In several conversations that I have had recently, regarding

Middle School events at a USRowing registered regatta, it is a

requirement that the races be run by licensed referees.

This comes from USRowing and the Referee Committee.

Please post this on the FSRA Groups.

Subject: Junior Women's ID Camp!

Hello All,

My name is Skye Elliot and I am the Varsity Women's Coach at Plant High School in Tampa, Florida and also work with the JNT Development Camp during the summer. I am contacting you as a reminder that Identification camp for the Women's Junior National Team will be held in Orlando on Sunday, February 21.

This is an outstanding opportunity for your top athletes. However, participation levels are sometimes average based on a lack of information. I would ask that you reach out to your top two 14-15 year olds as well as your top varsity athlete and encourage them to attend the upcoming Junior Women's Identification Camp. I recognize that one reason coaches do not encourage their athletes to go is because they may not meet the time standards for being invited to camp on the Development or Selection level. Regardless, we would really like to see the best 2 to 4 rowers on your team.

In my experience, great things can happen from just starting the process. I have had an athlete from Plant go to identification as a freshman and not get invited to any of the camps. The next year, the same athlete was representing the USA with the Junior National Team in Beijing, China. There is no doubt in my mind that she was less intimidated and much more prepared the second time around. But more than that, the first time she attended ID camp was the beginning of a very clear vision that helped motivate her over the next three years.

The athletes I have had participate at any level (Selection, High Performance, or Development) have come home better rowers, and very excited to continue moving forward with their training. I find that even just going to an ID camp can inspire some athletes to take personal responsibility for their improvement. For example, after three weeks at the Development Camp this past summer, we taught our youngest athletes about the importance of keeping a training journal, and they took ownership of logging their experiences each day. This is just one of the skills they are exposed to that will help them become more responsible and aware athletes.

Enthusiasm is contagious! Every athlete we have had row at a US Rowing camp has come back and inspired a higher level of competition. They are excited about getting faster, and motivated to show their teammates that being highly successful is possible if you are willing to do the work. Since the first athlete on our team at Plant returned from racing internationally in 2007, the whole team's perspective on what is possible has totally changed. As individuals, more kids have been inspired to reach for selection camp. Several have been successful. As a team, we have set bigger goals with a higher level of commitment to reaching those goals.

These are just some of the benefits that our team has experienced from having athletes involved in the US Rowing development and identification process. I hope that each of you invite your top two 14 to 15 year old rowers as well as your top varsity athlete, to this upcoming ID camp.

ID camp details and contact information can be found at USRowing.org ... under Competitors... Junior National Team... 2010 JNT identification camps ...more->. For a better understanding of the Development, High Performance, or Selection camp experience, please visit the USrowingjrs.org. website. Registration will be done on RegattaCentral.

Thanks for your time, and please call me if you have any hesitations about bringing your rowers to ID camp.

Best,
Skye Elliot

Hello All,

Justin Lednar of Boone wanted me to send out a quick reminder about the traffic pattern on Turkey Lake since we expect alot of traffic tomorrow:

All crews will hold to a counter clockwise pattern along the shore. On the course lanes 3,4,5,6 will be for race practice in a northern (start to finish) direction. Lanes 1 and 2 are dead closed lanes. From the finish line crews should turn (left) to the western shore and hold tight to the shoreline while headed back towards the boathouse/docks.
In past years my staff and I have been kept very busy maintaining safety and averting collisions.

We'll review at the C&C

IMPORTANT  AND  EXCITING  UPDATES:

1.    DEADLINE  FOR  REGISTRATION  EXTENDED  ONE  DAY:
Since Monday is a holiday, we have extended the registration deadline by one day.  The new deadline is Tues, 02-16.

2.    NEW  COURSE  TO  BE  INSTALLED  BEFORE  REGATTA  DAY:
Our new FISA quality fully buoyed, Albano race course will be installed this coming weekend.  This is the same course that is used for all NCAA Championships.  Inflated buoys will be installed on both sides of each lane and placed every 10 m., changing to Red for the finishing section.

3.    NEW  BYPASS  PATH  AROUND  BOAT  TRAILERS:
For those pedestrians needing to walk past the boat trailers, Sarasota County is in the process of building a path around the back side of the boat trailer area in order to increase pedestrian, rower, and equipment safety.

4.    US  ROWING  SANCTIONED  REGATTA  /  WAIVERS  NEEDED:
All rowers must execute a 2010 US Rowing Waiver before being allowed to compete.  Visit the waiver link on our pages on Regatta Central

5.    STAKEBOAT  HOLDERS:
We will be asking teams to provide one set of Stakeboat holders.  We will be getting in touch this coming week to arrange this.

6.    TRAILERS,  CAR  TOP  CARRIERS,  ETC:
Please provide, at your earliest opportunity, whether or not you will be bringing a trailer, and if so what length (approx).  Also, if you will be bringing any shells via Car Top, and if so, how many car or trailers you will be bringing.

More information will follow shortly.

Thank you very much for your support of our regatta.  It promises to be a great day and a great way to kick off the Sprint season and we look forward to hosting you on Sat, Feb 27.  In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Hello All,

Attached are the results of the Novice Regatta held at Turkey Lake on Feb. 13th.

The course was reversed to run with a strong tail wind.

A Chilly day by Florida standards but a fantastic regatta that was exceptionally well run by our officials and The Lake Brantley Parent and Legacy group.

Thank you to all who attended and I think the addition of the sculling races was very popular and We'll look to keep those moving forward to next year (~We also had 9 Middle School 8's out there!~).
