Let me know if you have a pair of sculling oars to buy. Lee Stein asked me if I could find some. I’ll be at the Sunrise Sprints for a possible pick up.

Thanks,

Miami Rowing and Watersports Center is excited to announce the recent hiring of Katie Davis as Club Manager. Katie hails from Orlando, where she has successfully coached at Boone High school for the past five years. Prior to her coaching career at Boone, Katie rowed and coached for the University of Florida under the legendary tutelage of UF Crew founder and coach Shannon Ridgeway, and graduated in 2004  with a degree in Public Relations and Business.

An impressive five time high school state champion in her own right with an infectious and charming disposition, Katie brings a unique blend of experience and organizational talent to our team of passionate parents, coaches, and masters.

One of her first missions will be coordinating our team of volunteers,

and taking the lead as Regatta Director for the 37th Annual 2010 Miami International Regatta.  She will be reaching out soon to coaches for their input on how we can continue to make the Miami International Regatta a unique and special experience for you and your athletes.

Please join us in welcoming her to our team and we look forward to seeing many of you on March 7th.

With ever growing number of rowers we are looking to add to our coaching staff to help our team succeed in the spring season.

Practices are after school during the week (4-6:30pm) and Saturday mornings.

Previous rowing or coxing or coaching experience needed. Don’t be afraid – coaching is much like rowing, you just need a passion for the sport and be willing to continue to learn and improve.

We already have a group of coaches and who you will coach will depend on your experience level and how we can work together best to help the program grow and improve. There can be opportunities at all levels (men/women, freshman through varsity).

Pay will depend on experience and may also depend on the amount of time you spend coaching (if we have to schedule around other work/school needs).

Mel-Hi recently won the Overall Youth Team Trophy at the Head of the South and looks forward to competing at FSRA States, and potentially Scholastic Nationals.

All coaches will be fingerprinted and pass a security check as per school board policy prior to hiring. We are an official organization of Melbourne HS and therefore follow all school policies.

Applications will be through the Head Coach and Board of Directors, with final hiring with the consent of the Melbourne HS Athletic Director.

This is a great opportunity for anyone local to either enter the coaching ranks or continue to build your coaching career. We have been around for over 30 years with a strong parental base and have a long history of competing at states and SRAA Qualifications.

Web Site: http://www.melhicrew.com/

Send all inquiries and information through Head Coach Matt Kaminski at: mkaminski@...

School starts January 5th and practices will start at the same time.

Dear Coaches & Competitors,

The Miami Rowing & Watersports Center is excited to announce many changes and improvements to our 2010 Miami International Regatta.

Saturday Night Events:

HS teams:  Pasta dinner for HS teams near the MRC boathouse (University of Miami on Virginia Key, within 1 mile of boathouse).

a.       Cost: $10/rower

b.      Reservations: Space is limited!! Email Katie Davis (General Manager) with your preferred arrival time and number of rowers/chaperones/coaches/etc.  I will email you back with confirmation.

Masters Rowers/21+: Social Gathering (food and beverage) for Masters at the Bayside Hut on Virginia Key - Fish Market, bar and grill (you don’t even need to leave our parking lot!!)

Please keep an eye on our Miami International Regatta FaceBook page for updates

Race Day:

The 2010 Regatta has been moved from Saturday to Sunday March 7.  We hope this will allow for more affordable travel (only one night in hotel) and a full practice day Saturday.  Regatta Schedule will be formatted to conclude at a reasonable time.

Regatta Schedule:

As usual, we’ll have a full day of racing with a schedule designed to allow you to race 2-3x.  The schedule will be updated soon Regatta Central to include estimated start times for events.  We anticipate a few shifts in the schedule once entries are in, but do not anticipate a complete over-haul.

Special Guests/Competitors:

Holy Spirit (Absecon, New Jersey) will bring both their HS men’s and women’s varsity 8+'s.

Keep checking our FaceBook page (Miami International Regatta) for more updates, announcements & surprises!!

Masters Racing:

YOU WILL HAVE STAKE-BOATS!!! In an effort to avoid floating starts (and keeping the regatta on schedule!), we will utilize one start line for all races and we will have two separate finish lines.

Also, we have added Masters Novice events:  Masters Novice 1x, Masters Novice 4x, Masters Novice 4+ and Masters Novice 8+.

Medals, Heats & Prizes:

Flights will be seeded to our best capability (it’s still early in the season!) and each flight will be medaled.  Event trophies will be awarded for the fastest time in the entire event (all flights in the event).  Varsity 8+’s will have heats and finals.

We are currently raffling off a 2010 MiniCooper and a Hudson 1x.  ALL teams are welcome to purchase tickets (please email me directly: katiehd327@...).  Prize drawings will happen at the regatta (Sunday March 7) and available for pickup immediately.  Tickets are $50, and we are limiting total ticket sales to 2000 tickets.

Lightweight Events:

We will be following the USRowing weight designations for HS Lightweight rowing.  Weigh-inns will be open Saturday afternoon from 1-5 p.m. and Sunday morning.

Youth Men: 150

Youth Women: 130

Coxswains: No minimum

Insurance:

The 2010 regatta will be insured by Mariner’s Insurance/NOARA. We hope this change will help to create an environment of safe, efficient and fare (common-sense) racing.  Our officiating crew will be a combination of USRowing certified officials and highly qualified non-USRowing officials.

Waivers for the regatta will be posted to Regatta Central soon.

Results:

We promise you that results will be uploaded to USRowing in a timely manner (within 24-hours of the regatta).

Hotels:

A full hotel list & prices will be posted to Regatta Central soon.

We hope to see you Sunday, March 7, 2010 for the Miami International Regatta!!

Katie,

This is great news!  I was happy to read that the problems from last year are being taken care of.  One other item you didn't mention was Master's handicapping problems.  That was horrendous last year and hope this year you will have all the information on ages from Regatta Central prior to the race, or have a computer online during the race to get the information.

You are not the only regatta with this handicapping problem.  It seems that races that are primarily scholastic lack the experienced time keepers to properly enter the handicaps for Master's races.  This is a big issue amongst Master's rowers, and if you can get it handled properly, they will show up.

Best regards,
Alis Jordan

The FSRA board wants to encourage and reward those that attend. We see this as a
benefit to the athletes, their teams, and to the regattas and their officials.
The clinic will stress safety, working with the referee, communication with the
coach, and observing the rules, as well as motivation, steering and race
strategy. This should all add up to safer crews and better events. We see this
as a win-win situation all the way around.

FSRA will refund $45 per coxswain that attends the Sunday January 17th - 9 am to
2 pm Coxing Workshop. To receive this benefit, teams must submit (email) a list
of names of coxswains attending by Friday, January 15, to me. Include the team
name, payable to name and mailing address for the refund check.

I will compare the attendance sheets with the submitted names and mail the

Dear  FSRA  and  FMRA  Members:

I am writing to you on behalf of  Sarasota County Rowing Club Masters  and our upcoming  Sarasota Invitational  on  Feb 27  on  Nathan Benderson Lake  in  Sarasota, FL.    We are hoping that you are making plans to attend our inaugural event.

We are very excited as our plans are all now coming together.  This regatta will give Youth teams the unique opportunity to race on the same course as will be used for the  FSRA States Regatta in April  and the  US SE Youth Regionals in May.  It will also give Masters rowers the opportunity to experience why there was so much positive buzz after last year's regatta there.  This course and regatta site are fabulous and exciting additions to the Florida rowing scene.

Much has been finalized over the last two weeks.  The proposed Event List is now up on Regatta Central, as are Fees, Deadline dates, and a link to the Sarasota Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Specific hotels which are participating as supporters of the regatta will be listed on our website within the next few days, and much more information will be available shortly.

We expect a major announcement about the buoy course any day, plus there are other site improvements being worked on based upon suggestions made after last year's FSRA regatta.  Much effort has been put into creating a unique rower and spectator friendly site and experience.

Based on several inquiries, we have added a Mens Masters Pair (2-)   and a   Mixed Masters 4X.    We have a small amount of additional flexibility in the schedule to add an event or two and if there is specific interest in something not listed, please do not hesitate to contact us.  Either Norm Thetford (noted above) or I can be reached via e-mail or phone if anyone has any questions.

Based on discussions over the last two months with Youth and Masters clubs, we expect this to be a very well attended regatta, and are looking forward to a fantastic inaugural experience for everyone.  Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help.  We look forward to seeing everyone on Sat, Feb 27, 2010.

Sincerely,

To all coaches –

Southern Sprints is coming up a little quicker than in previous years – race
day is January 31st with the deadline for entry January 20th.

It will be even more critical to get all team rosters updated and submitted on
the southernsprints.org web site.

I will make an attempt to assure that all coach contacts are current by cross
referencing with the FSRA contact list.

On the site, when you click on submit to send in your roster, you may end up
with another submit button (small code bug). Make sure you click on that
second submit button. Unless you receive confirmation that your entry was
sent in, I don’t have it.

If you don't already have an account or forgot your password from previous
years on the Southern Sprints site, let me know.

Does anyone in the FSRA community have Wednesday, February 3, open to attend this event? FSRA has been asked for representatives and with continuous rumors of registration fees being required on all our rowing / racing shells, I think we definitely need someone to represent our 1500 members and rowing interests in general. Please let me know if you are available to attend.

Thanks, Brice

All -

Sorry for the "spamish" blast, but there are 2 more days before the
registration deadline for Southern Sprints. I see that many schools have
migrated their rosters and are prepping them for submission, but there are
several who haven't touched them yet (at least in the on-line database).

I know there are always coaching changes and such, and lapses can happen, so I
am just getting in touch with the active body to make sure everyone is aware
of the schedule (at least those who are planning on attending).

The list that follows is the list of schools who attended sprints last year
but who haven touched their rosters yet. I would ask that the current head
coach of each of these teams please get in touch with me regarding your
participation status at sprints (are you planning on coming/not coming?):

This offer only applies to student athletes. Also, for teams sending multiple athletes, only one check per team. I would suggest the check be sent to the team’s treasurer and they can disperse the refunds.

The FSRA board wants to encourage and reward those that attend. We see this as a benefit to the athletes, their teams, and to the regattas and their officials. The clinic will stress safety, working with the referee, communication with the coach, and observing the rules, as well as motivation, steering and race strategy. This should all add up to safer crews and better events. We see this as a win-win situation all the way around.

FSRA will refund $45 per coxswain that attends the Sunday January 17th - 9 am to 2 pm Coxing Workshop. To receive this benefit, teams must submit (email) a list of names of coxswains attending by Friday, January 15, to me. Include the team name, payable to name and mailing address for the refund check.

I will compare the attendance sheets with the submitted names and mail the refund checks.

Subject: Start Line Instructions

Coaches, Coxswains, and Rowers,

I was recently reminded of the number of crews that have difficulties maneuvering around and locking onto a stake boat. Learning to row means crews should be proficient in all aspects of rowing.  With many of our regattas having a tight race schedule, referees do not have the luxury of time to coax/coach boats to the start line.  If the starter feels, that after a reasonable period of time,  a crew’s inability to control their boat may present a hazard to other competitors, they will be removed from the race. We will not delay the whole regatta because a crew lacks these skills.  Running on time isn’t everything, but safety is. A few drills on backing and sculling a few times will go a long way towards eliminating frustrations for the crews and refs and having a safe and fair regatta.

With this forewarning, please review the following.

Start Line Instructions

Nothing starts your team off on the wrong side of a referee faster than not being able to maneuver a boat in the starting area. To keep relations between officials and crews on a positive level, it helps if crews and coxswains come to the start line with prior experience on:

1)      how to back their boat to a starting platform/stake boat and;

2)      how to scull the bow around into the wind to maintain their point.

Coaches should make sure ALL crew members (not just those who normally sit in the bow half of the boat) know how to do these maneuvers prior to attending any race event.

Item 1 - Backing a Boat to a Starting Platform/Stake Boat

Coaches, please take a few minutes with each of your crews and have them back their boat into your hands while you are sitting in your anchored coaching launch and/or on your dock. To make this drill more realistic, try doing it on a day when there is wind.

On race day (for side entry race courses):

1)      Boats should enter the starting area in lane number order, with the far lane entering first. Hopefully a course marshal will be there to assist with this.

2)      Boats should enter on the race course side of the stake boats. Don't go behind the stake boats, otherwise you might get tangled up in the anchor lines.

3)      Boats should remain within about a boat length of the stake boats while crossing to their lane. If you entered in lane order (#1 above), you can stay close to the stake boats and not have to back down very far.

4)      Wind direction will determine when boats should stop and spin and from what direction boats should back into their stake boat. If there is a head or cross wind on the course, you want to use the wind to help push you into your stake boat. This last point about wind direction is misunderstood by many crews and as a result they have a lot of needless sculling to do to bring the bow of their boat around into the wind.

Here is a helpful article: http://row2k.com/columns/index.cfm?action=read&ID=242

Item 2 - Sculling the Boat’s Bow Around into the Wind / Keeping Your Point

First a big don’t: never use all oars on one side to scull the bow around. That is the quickest way to roll a boat over.

Coaches, if there is a head or cross wind on the course, you need to instruct your crews that as soon as they are locked on the stake boat they need to keep their point. And this does not mean pointing straight down the race course, especially in a cross wind. They need to keep their bow pointed into the wind until just before the start of their race.  This is best accomplished by sculling the bow around which moves the boat sideways instead of pulling it forward as a normal rowing stroke would do.

1)      Pass one oar (in an eight, you can use 2 or 3 oars on the same side) to the rower in front of you: bow seat to 2 seat, or 2 seat to 3 seat.

2)      With the arm fully extended over the side of the boat, take short strokes next to the hull (see attached photos).

3)   In the 2 pictures attached to this email, notice the hands stay in front of the body just like in normal rowing.

Here is another helpful article: http://row2k.com/columns/index.cfm?action=read&ID=255

Thanks and good luck with your spring racing season.

Rowing is experiencing phenomenal growth at all levels. With the initiatives that USRowing is taking in the areas of youth, collegiate, masters rowing and diversity, it is also on the verge of unprecedented growth.  Key to the success of these initiatives are improved coaching education, expanding the registered regatta program to provide safe and fair competitive opportunities, and building, developing and supporting our referee corps.  I am committed to seeing that USRowing follows through these initiatives.

As the Executive Director of the Princeton National Rowing Association, I am very involved in the Mercer Juniors, Peddie, Lawrenceville and Hun rowing programs.  This involvement extends to the regatta management for scholastic and junior regattas.  This gives me a unique understanding of the issues faced by juniors and regatta organizers which allows me to be an effective advocate for groups like the Northern Virginia Scholastic rowing organizations and the individual members of USRowing represented by your groups..

Attached is a parking and traffic pattern map for the Florida Tech campus
(north points to the left). Because of construction just south of the
Clemente center, there is an entire section of parking that is no longer
available. Please see below for additional information and distribute to
your bus drivers and parents as needed.

Regards
John

Bus drop off can still be at Clemente, follow along that path in front of
Clemente and maneuver around the curb just south of Clemente. On the Map,
the bus can follow the road to the spot on the map that says "Baseball,
Soccer, and Softball parking" for the bus parking.

Between that section of Parking and the baseball field is a grass lot that
is used for over flow parking when baseball, softball, and soccer play. That
section is always open and the opening is located where #52 is at the map.
Those two spots are going to be the best for parking buses.
