3rd annual Head of the Giblet - October Updates

We are less than 2 months from the Giblet !!

The event schedule on Regatta Central now shows event times.  We're trying to give you an enjoyable & full regatta AND have races done by 2 p.m.

We have added the middle school coxed 4x and middle school 8+ events to the schedule.  Highlights for these two events include:

est. 2250 meters (just under 1/2 of the 5000 meter course)

                ½ price entry fees ($40 for the 8+, $25 for the 4x)

All middle school participants receive a medal

All mixed events are at the end of the day (1-2 p.m.)  Although your rowers will only be able to participate in one mixed event, we hope this will create an enjoyable grand-finale to the day and allow most rowers to race in a mixed event.

The Turkey feet have been ordered!! We promise this year we will have a gold turkey foot trophy as all-points trophies (for Master and HS programs) and for first-place finishers in select events.  More details & which events receive trophies will be in the November update.  All events will receive 1st, 2nd and 3rd place medals.

The Gobbler Sandwich is back & a Frozen Turkey will again be awarded to the top Master 1x (men and women).

Visit our Head of the Giblet Regatta FaceBook page for updates on awards, prizes and other exciting developments!

We look forward to seeing you on November 21!

As is tradition, Florida cheers on their own when outside our state. So if you are racing in Boston this weekend, please let me know the entry name and event. I’m putting together a list so we will know when to be on the lookout to cheer on our sunshine state competitors in what is looking to be a cold New England regatta. With wind chill, probably will be less than 50 degrees and not much sun. I’ll send the info collected Wednesday afternoon. Good luck and row fast.

Hi Brice,

I hope things are going well!  I have a question and I’m not sure if you can help.  I have been in contact with Morten Bjoern who has been living in Claremont, but recently moved to Miami.  He is a former Danish National Team athlete and through his connections has invited several athletes (4-, 4x, two 2x’s and 1x) to train in Central Florida.  They are currently in the area and are planning to go to the Gatorhead Regatta in Gainesville and have been borrowing boats from Jeff Border and Vespoli.  Currently, they have no way to get their boats to Gainesville and I saw on Regatta Central that several local high schools are going to the regatta.  Is there any way to contact FSRA or the local programs to see if they would have space/ability to trailer their boats?  I will also touch base with Jeff Border to see if he will be going to the Gatorhead.

His contact information is: Morten Bjoern - morten@..., 407-770-8537

I have also copied him on this email.

Thanks and I hope fall racing is treating you well!

Becky

Please forward to all programs attending the Head of the Hooch Regatta.

The University of Tennessee @ Chattanooga will offer shower facilities on Saturday after the regatta

at a cost of $1 per person.  There are large facilities available in two buildings, so if there is enough

interest, there is more than enough space to accommodate teams.  The cost is $1 per person.  There

are no towels available, so you will need to bring your own towel to dry off.

Please contact Robert Espeseth at 423-425-5333 or at robert-espeseth@... for further

information and to make a reservation.  Everything has to be arranged by Monday, November 2nd.

Hello Florida,

The Sunrise Sprints are right around the corner. This early December race is not only a great way to keep your rowers excited about entering Winter Training but also gives you, the coach, an early preview of where your boats stand in the rankings. We are making strides to make this years regatta even bigger and better then last years and hope to see all of you there!

To register, please go to Regattacentral.com. Under the news section you'll find some updates for this year along with some general things that all coaches should know before attending.

If you would like your teams blade on the t-shirt please register at least one of your boats by Monday, November 23rd. Only those who have started registration by November 23rd will appear on the regatta t-shirt.

Also, Let us do the cooking! We will be providing a breakfast and lunch for a great low price and it'll be one less thing your team has to worry about! Attached you will find a menu and there is an option for a pre-order. The pre-order price will be cheaper then the prices during the regatta.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me.

See you all soon,

Miami Rowing and Watersports Center is excited to announce the recent hiring of Katie Davis as Club Manager. Katie hails from Orlando, where she has successfully coached at Boone High school for the past five years. Prior to her coaching career at Boone, Katie rowed and coached for the University of Florida under the legendary tutelage of UF Crew founder and coach Shannon Ridgeway, and graduated in 2004  with a degree in Public Relations and Business.

An impressive five time high school state champion in her own right with an infectious and charming disposition, Katie brings a unique blend of experience and organizational talent to our team of passionate parents, coaches, and masters.

One of her first missions will be coordinating our team of volunteers,

and taking the lead as Regatta Director for the 37th Annual 2010 Miami International Regatta.  She will be reaching out soon to coaches for their input on how we can continue to make the Miami International Regatta a unique and special experience for you and your athletes.

Please join us in welcoming her to our team and we look forward to seeing many of you on March 7th.

With ever growing number of rowers we are looking to add to our coaching staff to help our team succeed in the spring season.

Practices are after school during the week (4-6:30pm) and Saturday mornings.

Previous rowing or coxing or coaching experience needed. Don’t be afraid – coaching is much like rowing, you just need a passion for the sport and be willing to continue to learn and improve.

We already have a group of coaches and who you will coach will depend on your experience level and how we can work together best to help the program grow and improve. There can be opportunities at all levels (men/women, freshman through varsity).

Pay will depend on experience and may also depend on the amount of time you spend coaching (if we have to schedule around other work/school needs).

Mel-Hi recently won the Overall Youth Team Trophy at the Head of the South and looks forward to competing at FSRA States, and potentially Scholastic Nationals.

All coaches will be fingerprinted and pass a security check as per school board policy prior to hiring. We are an official organization of Melbourne HS and therefore follow all school policies.

Applications will be through the Head Coach and Board of Directors, with final hiring with the consent of the Melbourne HS Athletic Director.

This is a great opportunity for anyone local to either enter the coaching ranks or continue to build your coaching career. We have been around for over 30 years with a strong parental base and have a long history of competing at states and SRAA Qualifications.

Send all inquiries and information through Head Coach Matt Kaminski at: mkaminski@...

School starts January 5th and practices will start at the same time.
