The meeting location for the annual FSRA fall coach's meeting has been confirmed at Golden Bear Club at Keene's Pointe in Windermere for Saturday, August 22, 2009. This is the same location as last year. Meeting starts at 12 pm (noon) so please plan to arrive around 11:45 am. The meeting room is in the main club house. We will have a light lunch and drinks (water, beer, etc) for everyone. Directions are provided below.

Attached is a preliminary FSRA Spring 2010 schedule using dates from the 2009 schedule. Also attached is a fall 2009 schedule from the FMRA website.

Due to the strong interest of additional people wanting to serve on the board, we will be "electing" 4 regional reps to serve as a steering committee and serve as a conduit for teams in their area to correspond with the executive board. The regions are North (Tallahassee/Jax), Central (Orlando/Brevard), Southeast (Miami), and Southwest (Tampa/Sarasota). We believe this is a good first step to a future amendment to the Constitution to increase the board size from 5 to 9.

We plan to adjust the following agenda to allow invited guest speakers to go first before proceeding with normal business. We have invited the Benderson Corporation to speak on the development progress of the Sarasota venue. We have invited the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to speak on listening sessions and future plans for state boating rules and regulations.

The agenda per By-Laws is as follows:
Registration of representatives and roll call.
Reading and approval of previous minutes.
Report of Treasurer.
Report of President.
Consideration and vote on amendments to Constitution. (none submitted)
Setting the following year's Membership Dues.
Discussion of annual race schedule.
Discussion of Annual State Championship Regattas.
Junior National Team testing.
Election of New Officers.
Committee Assignments.
Unfinished Business.
New Business.
Adjournment.

Remember your annual membership fee of $150 is due at this meeting. Make checks payable to the Florida Scholastic Rowing Association.

RE: Proposed Constitutional & By-Law Amendments

Please see the attached amendments offered  by the FSRA Executive Committee.

At last year's FSRA Annual Meeting, we discussed the need for FSRA to be a more responsive and efficient governing body for scholastic and youth rowing in Florida. The attached amendments are the Board's effort to clear up some ambiguities in our founding documents, and to help provide a more consistent, positive rowing season for the membership.

Amendment 1 - This is an effort to clean-up language in the Constitution and By-laws to reflect our current operations. The changes are non-substantive and are an effort to use consistent language throughout the document.

Amendment 2 -
Adds new language regarding the implementation of a season-long approach to member ethics. The FSRA Executive Committee believes its critical that our Association Members operate in a respectful and ethical manner throughout the entire rowing season, not merely on the weekend of our state championship. In creating this amendment, the Board looked to other similar youth athletic organizations, such as the FHSAA, for guidance. Recruiting of another teams' athletes is expressly forbidden.

Amendment 3
- As many of you know, there have been ongoing problems between programs related to eligibility and recruitment of athletes. Coaches, in particular, have been put in the difficult position of being asked to permit certain athletes seek to leave their program for another. Elements of this proposal will be controversial, but the FSRA Board believes the various changes, taken as a whole, help solve the eligibility crisis and take coaches out role of "bad guy" in these disputes.

The amendment accomplishes three main things:
  1. Expressly allows members, including those affiliated with public schools, to utilize middle schoolers from their feeder schools.
  2. Bars team switching for all FSRA programs between 9/1 and 6/15.
  3. Allows rowers to select their teams during the summer months.

If you have any questions about any of the amendments, please do not hesitate to reach out to me my phone (850.321.0738) or email (dsnewman99@...).

I look forward to seeing all of you in two weeks.

Best,

Dan Newman
FSRA President

U S Rowing and the USOC had extensive discussions early in 2009
concerning youth Olympics to be held in Singapore in 2010 and we have no
team scheduled to participate in this event. There are many reasons from
USOC most surround team size and priority or events. From US Rowing
standpoint this event is likely to be problematic.

Scheduling is one problem as these games require 2 week commitment to
attend and falls the week following junior worlds.

Us Rowing is in support of the decision by USOC not to send rowers.

I bring this to your attention as the following ran on fisa site this
week.

Pending items completed:

·        By-law changes have been posted – added first and second amendments.

I would like to clarify what I believe is a misunderstanding about the first amendment that was passed. It changed the language to remove the requirement for 2 state champs (scholastic and youth) but still allows for multiple championships if the association membership deems that necessary. So instead of calling for separate scholastic and youth championships, it calls for annual championship(s) giving the association some flexibility. If the scholastic teams deem it is necessary in the future to have a separate championship, that can be addressed without changing the by-laws.

·        Regatta schedules (fall and spring) up to date as far as the info provided to me.

As always, please feel free to send updates. Good luck with your fall races.

Thanks, Brice

Melbourne HS Rowing is looking to add a coach for the men's program for the 2010 spring season.

Pay competitive but commensurate with experience.

Coaching could be for the varsity squad, freshmen, or both. Again depending on experience.

Prior coaching experience needed (or at least 4 years of competitive rowing/coxing), also current CPR, first aid, a working knowledge of rigging, launch driving experience, and basic boat maintenance.

The successful applicant will need to be fingerprinted per school policy and pass a school district security check.

Opening starts in early January, but could start earlier if available.

The assistant coach will follow school and team policy, and work with the head coach to prepare the team for the state championships and scholastic nationals.

Men's team currently has 33 members and we also have 4 other assistants to help share the load. There is a very active parental group for extra help, and the organization has a solid long term plan.

Practice held weekdays after school and saturday mornings.

Apply through Matt Kaminski via email (mkaminski@...)

I'm trying to secure some equipment to be used by several alumni of the UCF women's club to varsity program for use at the Hooch.  The ideal boat would be a mid-weight eight and a set of oars. They are willing to pay a reasonable rental fee.  Please email me directly if you have anything available.

Thanks,
Jamie Francis

Dear coaches and friends of FSRA:

I wanted to make you all aware of an exciting,  unique rowing event hosted by Hillsborough High School Rowing Club on November 14th.  The Hillsborough Rowing Challenge is a run, erg and row triathlon benefiting the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.  The event not only serves a great cause but provides an interesting format for all high school and junior rowers.  Up for grabs is the title of the “Fittest Crew in Florida”.  So if you think you are up for the challenge, please read the attached flyer for more information.

If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact me.  We look forward to seeing you all in Tampa.

Thank you
