Coaches,

I was recently reminded of the number of crews that are still having difficulties maneuvering around and locking onto a stake boat. In 4 weeks is the FSRA state championship event. By this time in the season, crews should be proficient in all aspects of rowing.  With our expected tight schedule, referees do not have the luxury of time to coax/coach boats at the line.  If the starter feels, that after a reasonable period of time,  a crew’s inability to control their boat may present a hazard to other competitors, they will be removed from the race. We will not delay the whole regatta because a crew lacks these skills.  Running on time isn’t everything, but safety is. A few drills on backing and sculling will go a long way towards eliminating frustrations for the crews and refs and having a safe and fair regatta.

With this forewarning, please review the following with your team.

Start Line Instructions

Nothing starts your team off on the wrong side of a referee faster than not being able to maneuver a boat in the starting area. To keep relations between officials and crews on a positive level, it helps if crews and coxswains come to the start line with prior experience on:

1)      how to back their boat to a starting platform/stake boat and;

2)      how to scull the bow around into the wind to maintain their point.

Coaches should make sure ALL crew members (not just those who normally sit in the bow half of the boat) know how to do these maneuvers prior to attending any race event.

Item 1 - Backing a Boat to a Starting Platform/Stake Boat

Coaches, please take a few minutes with each of your crews and have them back their boat into your hands while you are sitting in your anchored coaching launch and/or on your dock. To make this drill more realistic, try doing it on a day when there is wind.

On race day (for side entry race courses):

1)      Boats should enter the starting area in lane number order, with the far lane entering first.

2)      Boats should enter on the race course side of the stake boats. Don't go behind the stake boats.

3)      Boats should remain within about a boat length of the stake boats while crossing to their lane.

4)      Wind direction will determine when boats should stop and spin and from what direction boats should back into their stake boat. If there is a head or cross wind on the course, you want to use the wind to help push you into your stake boat. This last point about wind direction is misunderstood by many crews and as a result they have a lot of needless sculling to do to bring the bow of their boat around into the wind.

Here is a helpful article: http://row2k.com/columns/index.cfm?action=read&ID=242

Item 2 - Sculling the Boat’s Bow Around into the Wind / Keeping Your Point

First a big don’t: never use all oars on one side to scull the bow around. That is the quickest way to roll a boat over.

Coaches, if there is a head or cross wind on the course, you need to instruct your crews that as soon as they are locked on the stake boat they need to keep their point. And this does not mean pointing straight down the race course, especially in a cross wind. They need to keep their bow pointed into the wind until just before the start of their race.  This is best accomplished by sculling the bow around which moves the boat sideways instead of pulling it forward as a normal stroke would do.

1)      Pass one oar (in an eight, you can use 2 or 3 oars on the same side) to the rower in front of you: bow seat to 2 seat, or 2 seat to 3 seat.

2)      With the arm fully extended over the side of the boat, take short strokes next to the hull (see attached photos).

3)   In the 2 pictures attached to this email, notice the hands stay in front of the body just like in normal rowing.

Here is another helpful article: http://row2k.com/columns/index.cfm?action=read&ID=255

Thanks and good luck the rest of this season.

US Rowing is now producing a magazine online.
The web site has a link to this as well:
http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/69ef3a62

If you haven't already, please take a look. The purpose of this is to
provide feature focused stories, not necessarily news or results. We see
this as an opportunity to tell stories about athletes, teams and rowing
programs.

Obviously the distribution by email is somewhat problematic as emails
change, spam filters create issues and not everyone is tech literate.
But
as we link to the site as well, we expect this to catch on beyond the
members only and provide a larger viewership.

As High School Coaches and those involved in junior programs, I'm
interested in your comments on how the final product turned out. We
will produce 8 issues this year. Six on a bi-monthly basis and two
special editions.

RE: Florida Sprints League 2008

This will be the 4th year of the Florida Sprints League Championship. It will be held from 10:00AM until 3:30PM on Saturday, April 11th, 2009. It will be held on Turkey Lake at the Bill Frederick Park in Orlando, Florida.

Drawing inspiration from historical sources such as the Boat Race, the EARC Eastern Sprints League, and NEIRA, the teams in the FSL have sought to reorganize their season around dual and tri races. These races facilitate day trips rather than overnight regattas, do not require the labor and production of hosting a large regatta and can be held on a greater variety of bodies of water in any team’s hometown.

The Florida Sprints League, therefore, is more than a championship match-race regatta held two weeks prior to the FSRA State Championship. It is, and will continue to become, an approach to organizing your team’s racing season.

I can only speak to Capital City Rowing’s experience with this style of racing, but we have dramatically cut our regatta budget, our season is considerably more manageable because half our races are held in Tallahassee, and when we travel out-of-town we can make daytrips. No longer does the season have the déjà vu factor in which it seemed like we raced the same five teams on the same bodies of water every weekend. By adding shirt-trading, all our rowers meet and shake hands with their opponents. Our parents and our opponent’s parents interact more as do the coaching staffs. All in all, it’s been enormously positive experience.

The guidelines that we have asked of FSL teams are as follows:

1.     Race eights. The FSL Championship features the 1st 8+, 2nd, 8+, and 3rd 8+. We also have an open 8+ and open 4+ to allow all your rowers to get a race.

2.     Trade shirts. One of the best features of the FSL is shirt trading. The loser hands their shirt to the winner. The shirts can be simple one-color designs, but should clearly reflect your team name and logo.

We seed events based on participants. Visit www.row2k.com AND www.floridarowing.org. When we seed the FSL Championship, it’s important to have access to all the results.

We’ll have five events per gender at the Florida Sprints League Championship:
  • 1st 8+
  • 2nd 8+
  • 3rd 8+
  • Open 8+
  • Open 4+

While these event classifications may seem limiting, they’re actually not. The classifications are designed to fit your current boatings. For instance, if you have 1M8, LM8, and FM8, then you’ll probably enter the LM8 in the 2nd 8+ event and Frosh in the 3rd 8+ event. There is no need to rearrange your entries. (Please note: You must enter a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prior to entering the open events.)

This regatta is a chance to get your States lineups 2-3 rows in the same lineups two weeks prior to the event.

Some larger teams may have an interest in racing two 2nd or 3rd eights rather than an open 8+. For instance, you may want to enter a 3M8 and FM8 in the 3rd event. That is fine so long as we have capacity. Please indicate 2x3M8, in that case. If you have multiple entries they will seeded independently and will progress independently.

Some teams have fewer than three eights for a given gender. This is not a problem. Please indicate that you will have no third boat so it doesn’t get seeded. Additionally, the Open4 is for your four worst rowers. The Open 8 should be prioritized ahead of your four.

The costs of the regatta will distributed evenly amongst the participating teams. The costs include course installation,  EMT, portapotties, and Insurance. We'll divide costs by the number of competitors. We run a VERY low cost regatta that generates no profit.

If you are planning on attending, please send me a quick confirmation note. I will send a more targeted email in the next few days soliciting entries.

I will distribute a coaches poll the Sunday prior to the race to include recent results.

Thanks,

Coaches,

As discussed before, please make sure your blades colors/designs are matching
sets on any given boat including sculling blades. At recent regattas I see this
is still an issue. As a reminder of rowing rules, your boats can receive
warnings for mismatched blades and uniforms, and for uniforms not properly worn.
This starts with your approach to the launching docks. I would really hate to
see a boat excluded without the opportunity to race down the course at FSRA
State Championship. But if your crew picks up 2 warnings, they are out. It is
the State Championship so make sure you have reviewed racing rules with your
team even if you already have done it earlier.

Here is a link to the 2009 Rules of Rowing:
http://www.usrowing.org/uploads/docs/2009ROR_3R21MF.pdf

3-201 Uniforms
(a) Subject to subsection (b), all competitors in a crew shall wear identical
clothing. Such clothing shall cover the torso of the body and may include
sweatgear. The Chief Referee may grant exceptions to this rule on account of
unusual weather conditions.
(b) Individual competitors in a crew may choose whether or not to wear a hat or
other headgear, which may be of the individual competitor’s own choosing and
need not be identical with those worn by other crew members.
(c) No competitor may wear the uniform of the U.S. National Team while
participating as a member of a crew without the express approval of USRowing.

3-203 Oars
Oars, whether sweep or scull, must be uniform throughout the crew, except that
each rower in a composite crew may use the colors of his or her own club. Only
the national or club colors may appear on oar blades. Unpainted oars are also
permitted for all boats, whether composite or otherwise, if all rowers use such
oars. Use of National Team colors without the express approval of USRowing is
specifically prohibited.

Subject: ranking methodology
power10@...
Send Email Send Email

First please accept my apologies for any unfairness anyone perceives with our
new ranking effort. We have seemed to have hit a nerve, so I think some
explanations are due. As with any new effort, there is a learning curve. I will
start with a history lesson.

For several years we have seeded FSRA state championship entries by polling
coaches. This annual once-a-year effort had mixed results mostly because coaches
were not up to speed to provide a quick reply using a once-a-year process. So to
overcome these short comings, my 'brilliant' idea last April was to resurrect
rankings for this season. Our previous ranking effort, which ended about 6 years
ago, was solely based on regatta results that were made available. It was a time
consuming effort especially to get those regatta results in time for a weekly
ranking. And it did not include any polling of coaches. This time the rankings
were based almost solely on coaches input with 2 exceptions. 1) The pre-season
ranking used a handful of head race results (Hooch, First Coast, Indian Creek,
etc.), and 2) this last ranking cycle included the results from OARS.

Keep in mind the goal was to improve seeding efforts for state championships.
Hopefully the ranking process provides some helpful information along the way.
Here is how rankings are currently done. For each polling cycle (every 2 weeks),
I average all the inputs submitted from the coaches for that cycle plus include
the previous cycle’s ranking (this helps average out changes). The pros for
this method is it is fairly easy to do; the cons is it be very susceptible to
errors if there is a lack of participation or if a coach ranks a team low out of
spite instead of based on performance. Also, each polling form includes the
option to not include their team in an event rank.

There have been about 10 coaches participating each time ranking one or more
events and mostly from different coaches each polling cycle. With an average of
about 1.5 head coaches per FSRA team, we should have about 55 polls submitted.
So currently rankings are made by less than 20% of the coaches. This week I also
included the OARS regatta results since it was such a large event and therefore
would help average out rankings with actual results. It should be noted that for
the teams that have complained about their rankings, their coaches have not yet
participated. This lack of participation should not make a difference with the
laws of averaging but everyone needs to realize these ranking are not gospel.

Next season (using the learning curve method), I plan to time ranking cycles
with the major regattas (Miami, OARS, etc.) and combine coach’s poll with all
available actual results. I could do this poll every week but I think
participation would drop off and not provide much more benefit. And most of us
have real jobs to do in addition to our rowing efforts. My one concern using
this method is it may give a weighted advantage to winners of small events or
those who race more often. However with good participation from coaches, this
advantage should be offset.

A note about FSRA championship seedings: It will be a separate effort similar to
past years. After the season’s last poll (sent April 10/posted by April 17), I
will send out a similar form for seeding that will only include those teams
entered in each event.

VIP parking is obtained at the same parking entrance as regular parking. When you arrive at the off-site parking entrance (3rd traffic circle around-about on N. Cattlemen Road heading south from University Parkway (I-75 exit 213)), the attendant will ask (or you can ask) about VIP parking. Depending on which you chose and what is available, you will pay the corresponding fee and will  be directed to the respective parking locations. Please note VIP parking space is limited to 100 vehicles so it is first come - first served. You will get a parking receipt (pass), so you can come early each day to reserve your spot and then return later with family and friends.

Team Volunteers: The number of volunteers required is determined by the positions the team chooses to cover. As stated in the introduction of the volunteer form, each team must cover at least one (1) credit. The credits earned are listed at the end of each description. Example for finish line: 2 adults must work the finish line for ½ day to get one team credit (they dont have to work the same shift). Or 1 adult works a full day (Saturday) to get one team credit. Example for stake boats: 6 people must work 1 shift (2 hours) to get one team credit. Or 3 people work 2 shifts (4 hours) to get one team credit. Again they dont have to all work the same shift. However, most find it more enjoyable to work at the same time as others from their teams.

Flexibility was built into this volunteer system especially to allow smaller teams to contribute. It is most helpful if teams (especially the larger teams) are available to work more than just the bare minimums. Please ask if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Regatta Timeline: The timeline will be finalized tonight, but our goal is to have the coaches/coxswains meeting at 7:30 and plan to have races done by 2:30 p.m. at the latest.

As we all know, coaches run VERY efficient regattas!!!  Because of the modified-henley format, as soon as the prior race enters the canal and we deem it safe, the next race will start.  Again, coaches are encouraged but not required to follow their race.  We’re encouraging coaches to follow their race simply because it’s a great opportunity to really see how your kids perform in a race.  If you are unable to follow and unable to send someone in your place the Hood Cup committee will have an official or qualified regatta volunteer ride in your place.

Also, thank you to those who have emailed me about doubling.  We will do everything we can to accommodate doubling and hotseating and it helps to know of those situations ahead of time.

Please feel free to email me directly if you have any regatta questions/concerns/clarifications.

Thank you,

Coaches,

We've received a lot of questions about the new format of Hood Cup.  Most common is how we're going to determine gold/silver/bronze and following races.

I've attached a PDF for your reference in hopes that it clears up any confusion.  If your team is knocked out in the first round, they'll race again for bronze.  No boat will race more than 3 times on the way to gold.

Doubling is allowed, but PLEASE let me know if you're considering doubling and which lineups are affected.  We want to accommodate as many lineups as possible during our efficient regatta, but the only way to do that is to know what lineups/equipment may be affected by hotseating.

The goal of this years' format is for coaches/teams to get to race and have a close look at multiple competitors.  We'll assume that coaches will be following races, but if on race-day you realize you don't have time due to your coaching responsibilities, please just let us know who will follow the race in your place or if you would like the US Rowing official/Boone coach in your place.  Filming of your crew during the race will be allowed because it's a valuable coaching tool; we ask that you don't abuse this opportunity and send an "eager parent" with a camera in your place.

We look forward to seeing you next weekend in Orlando for the 16th annual Hood Cup!

We will be issuing parking passes again this year to allow for each team to have their designated tow vehicle park on-site (near, but not attached to, the trailers).  Additionally, we will issue a "Drop Off Vehicle" pass that will allow for ONE vehicle per team to be able to access the regatta site in order to assist with the set up of team tents.  Please note that the drop off pass will be valid on FRIDAY ONLY and those vehicles will NOT be allowed to park on-site.

It is important to note that we have arranged for ample parking for all spectators/competitors.  The on-site area is very limited this year and will not be able to be accessed without an issued tow vehicle or drop off pass.  No exceptions.

I will be sending the passes out in the next week or so to the address listed on the FSRA web site.  Please take a moment to check that the address listed for your team is accurate and notify us if any changes are necessary.

We are working very diligently to ensure a well run regatta again this year and we are excited about the new venue in Sarasota.

All the best,
Patrick

Due to the prevailing east winds--current plan is for the start to be at the closed end of the Miami Marine Stadium Basin with finish line to the Northwest.

Please make sure and bring your payments and waivers to registration located upstairs of the MRC Boat house. There will be someone at the registration desk starting at 4:30 on Friday.

Good luck.

To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Jason Puckett and I work for Sarasota County through the Convention & Visitors Bureau.  My job is to bring and help facilitate sporting events in Sarasota County.  I noticed that you had a list of hotels for the event on April 25-26 on your website, http://www.floridarowing.org/SarasotaHotels.pdf .  There are more hotels in the area that would like to offer their rates and availability and I thought it would give your teams more of a selection.  Also we are the official tourism entity for the County and I thought our website would be a good resource for your competitors to plan their trip.  Our website is http://www.sarasotafl.org.  Just trying to help!  Please let me know if you have any questions, we look forward to your event in Sarasota.

Thank you,

RE: Southeast Youth Committee Candidates

Yesterday, I solicited volunteers to serve on the SE Youth Committee. Florida has four spots on the Committee, North (filled by me), West (filled by Matt Abel), and two open slots Central/Eastern and South.

Laura Bracken of Miami Rowing Club was the sole volunteer the Southern region; however, there were four volunteers for the Central/Eastern region.

  • Kirsten Anderson (OARS)
  • David Drake (SCC)
  • Phil McMican (P10)
  • Travis Raker (Lake Brantley)

I would ask that a representative for the following programs please vote your preferred candidate. I will count only the first vote I receive from each program. I will close voting by Thursday evening.

  • Boone
  • Edgewater
  • Lake Brantley
  • Lyman
  • Melbourne
  • OARS
  • Power Ten
  • Space Coast
  • Winter Park

Thanks,

Dan Newman
