Please Respond if you have interest in attending the clinic on the Saturday, the 10th of January.

FSRA Members,
On January 10th, there will be a coaches clinic hosted in Tampa.  The focus of the clinic will predominantly revolve around the following topics:
  • Training for the spring season: Conditioning athletes to peak at State/Scholastic Championships.
  • Skills and Drills of Rowing: Effective water and land based drills aimed at increasing boat speed.
  • Coaching High School Athletes: the development of freshman and preparing upper-classmen for the collegiate level.
  • Rigging: The myths and facts behind rigging.
In addition to the mentioned topics, the presenters would like to know if there are any other areas of focus you would like to be addressed.

The length of the clinic will be about 4 hours, and will be hosted at Tampa Preparatory.  Details to follow.

Please forward your ideas or interest to:

To all Florida Coaches,

January 17-18 Regional Camp

The January 17-18 Camp will be held at UCF in Orlando in conjunction with the FSRA-sponsored Coaching Eduction Program.  We will start the weekend at 2:00 on Saturday, to give athletes a chance to train with their home teams, and end at 3:00 on Sunday to accomodate everyone's travels. I am once again asking coaches to send their top athletes, with eye towards those 5' 8" or taller and they must have a 1991 birthdate or younger and/or athletes that are 5' 11" or taller and have 1993 or 1994 birthdates.  This camp will continue our focus on two main themes; 1) technical changes on the water with extensive video/review  and 2) the critical importance of core strength and how to develop it over the winter months.  We will repeat the 1 minute test as well as a 1250 erg piece.  I will once again be accompanied by Liz Trond, a member of the Junior National Team coaching staff in order to maximize the coach to athlete ratio as we work on these critical areas.

For those who have had athletes attend both sessions, I know that you will agree with me that we have seen great gains in the athlete's technical skills and have seen some significant speed increase in the 1 minute testing; mostly due to better power application on the erg.

Thanks again for your participation and support of this program and I can already see that Florida athletes will play a bigger role in our developent and selection programs.

Best regards,
Steve

For anyone that is interested, there will be space on a trailer headed up and down the east coast during the last week of January.  If you have any boats that you want to send back to Vespoli, or the Rowing Repair Center for repair, this would be an excellent opportunity to ship your equipment up or down the east coast before the spring racing season gets started.

Please contact me by phone or email for more details.

Coaches -

As a reminder, entry for Southern Sprints deadline is Jan 25th.  Entries after that date will incur late fees as described in the race packet.

If there were coaching changes at your organization or if you can remember your password to access your group area and roster, let me know and I will update the account with new information and send you the password to access your area.

Also, note the corrected pricing for race day ergs as posted on www.southernsprints.org and in the race packet that is up there.

Finally, there have been some questions regarding the Excel sheet entry method.  If you use the web site to do your roster and entries submission, there is no issue.  However, if you generate your own Excel sheet and email it, there are some things to keep in mind.
    - If you are running Vista and/or a new version of MSOffice, be sure to save the excel sheet in an older version format.
    - Please follow the format posted in the regatta packet exactly note the column titles and data formats for each.
    - Birthdays are in the form: mm/dd/yyyy
    - Weights should be either H or L (not the actual pounds)
    - Do not enter individuals into relay events, just a single boat name as a new "athlete" (we don't care which 4 people are in the boat).
    - When creating a relay boat, we just need the boat's name in the LastName column (you do not need to enter individuals into relay boats).

The Olympians Are Coming!

Well, the rumors are true. The Regatta Team here in Miami is proud to announce that members of the US Men’s Olympic Rowing Team will be taking a break from the  cold weather up north and coming down  to participate in the 36th Annual Miami International Regatta.

Cameron Winkelvoss, Dan Beery, and Jason Read,  will be relaxing on the beach , soaking up rays, chatting up the kids and  signing autographs. Hang out with them and find out what it’s like to row bow in a world record eight, or get some tips on how to row the pair.  It could have been the sunshine or the good fishing that lured them down, but thanks to Brendan Crotty of Wintech Racing for helping twist their arms.

Once again we have some fast teams headed this way and following is quick preview of who’s coming;

Always a force to be reckoned with in the small boats, Head Coach Alex Dragos has got Sarasota Scullers  firing on 8 cylinders and tearing up the big 8 events this  fall with impressive results at the Head of the Indian Creek and Sunrise Sprints. They will overwhelm the field with impressive depth and be tough in all events.

Pine Crest will  take a break from their advanced studies and return once again. Reportedly in a “rebuilding year”, our inside sources have learned that  Coach Liza and Steve Casey have a few aces up their sleeves --we will just have to wait and see which events they choose to focus their strength on.

Boone is Back!  So far, our only Orlando team to make the commitment.  Their men’s V8 pulled off a bronze medal last year here in Miami and capped the season off with a gutsy  win in the repecharge at states last year in a tight 5 boat race that was up for grabs right until the end. Don’t underestimate them.

Belen  will always be tough in the boys freshmen 8 since they are so flooded with talent they send their 6 foot 160 pound leftovers over to MRC. They’re a well coached team with discipline, depth, and a knack for patience and peaking at the right time. Look for them to under stroke the  field but stay in the hunt until the end.

Last years winner of the Men’s Varsity 8 at MIR and silver medalist at States, Sarasota Crew is returning to test their speed. Led by some summer Junior National Team members, they will be fast in the sculling events as well.  Should also be tough in the fours considering one of the Taafes’s   stroked the US Men's Dev Team 4+ to victory at US Rowing Club Nationals last summer.

Crosstown rivals Miami Beach Rowing Club look to be a force in the Men and Women’s 4X since Head Coach Francisco Viacava will coaching the US Junior National Team Men’s 4x this summer. Look for them to be  right in the thick of a dogfight in the 2x events with Sarasota Scullers , and Sarasota Crew as well.

The young upstarts  St. Edwards and Cape Coral team will be back gunning for some respect and University School of Nova returns after a two year hiatus. Both are trying to sneak in  under everyone’s radar.

The Masters Races are shaping up to be more competitive this year with more teams  showing up including an interesting mixed eight.. The “McDevitt 8”  all the way from Island Rowing Club in Ventnor New Jersey is making the long haul down. Made up of brothers, sisters, and a coxswain daughter from this  notorious rowing family; this crazy bunch of Irish Catholics have been training since the summer and have just concluded some vicious seat racing to finalize the lineup. Sponsored by Wintech Racing, they will be rowing in a new self bailing Medalist Eight with the new top secret yet to be released Hyper Drive™ foot stretcher system.

Our own MRC Men’s Master’ s eight  has found their mojo again after winning Silver  at the Hooch this year and are training hard for their  homecoming.

A strong Sarasota  Masters team is also reportedly about to make a commitment and round out the field along with Miami Beach , and Cape Coral.

Coaches try to get your entries in early even if you’re not sure about lineups so we can get the schedule firmed up. As usual—we are trying spread the events out so your kids can at least double or even triple.  The pool will be open once again and we will have an expanded concession area with a unique Miami flair.

There will be another update on some surprses for the regatta after the Novice Regatta.

Coaches -

Please make your athletes aware that we have items that were left at the
racing venue on Sunday.

Have them refer to the web site for any details of specific items
lost/found.

Among them is an iPod we found that I believe was left after the open
relays. There was an athlete who came up to me looking for it but it didn't
turn up until we were cleaning up and he had already left.

Regards
John

RE: 2009 FSRA State Championship

As some of you may have heard, the Tampa Bypass Canal's water level is at a historic low. We've determined that we will not be able to hold the race there this year. As a result, we have been looking for an alternative location to hold the race while also maintaining our orignally scheduled date.

The FSRA Board has voted to hold this year's FSRA Championship at North Metro Park in Sarasota. The lake is relatively near I-75, and is a fresh water lake.

Course location:

North Metro Park
2500 Honore Ave.
Sarasota 34232

I look forward to supporting this new venue. I appreciate the work of both the Sarasota rowing community, particularly Dragos "Alex" Alexandru of SSYRP to put together an alternative location at the last minute.

I have attached a list of hotels near the race site. Please do not hesitate to call me with any questions or concerns.

Thanks,

Dan Newman

Great Diversity Conference in DC this past weekend. The Diversity Task Force did a great job of arranging speakers.

Rowing Britain’s (the new name of the ARA) Simon Dickie’s presentation about how Rowing Britain is expanding rowing. It was a presentation that highlighted the fact that in the UK, Rowing is organized from the junior level up and it is working behind expectations.

The presentation materials have been posted at:

http://www.usrowing.org/Events_Regattas/DiversityWorkshop/index.aspx

Another good presentation was Steve Stenerson the CEO of US Lacrosse.  In the 11 years of its existence, US Lacrosse has grown to 260,000 members, 60+ staff and a budget of over $15 million .Lacrosse also develops their athletes from a participation stage on the grass route level.

All of the presentations were video taped and DVD’s will be made available.

SORA/Boone High School is pleased to announce changes to the Annual Hood Cup Regatta.  Most significantly, Hood Cup will be a Henley-style coaches-run regatta.  However, in order to reduce the demands on coaches, we will have 2 or 3 specially requested US Rowing officials who have been invited to keep things running smoothly.

Insurance will be through Mariners; Registration and waivers will be available through Regatta Central.

Costs will remain low and we will work hard to accommodate any reasonable requests.

Our goal is to produce a well-run regatta with a clear focus on the enjoyment and experience of the HS competitors.

Deadlines:
            Entries Close Monday, March 16
Late entries close Thursday, March 19
Regatta date is Saturday, March 21

Costs:
            8+        $75
            4+/4x   $60
            2-/2x    $40

Hi All,

I agree 100%.  I went by there this morning and as they say, a picture is worth a 1000 words.

Good news is that the Sarasota site will work, based on my 4 hour meeting there with Alex and the LOC.  Details soon, but for now, the pics I promised.

The bypass is seriously compromised.  Lane 6 buoys are basically on the rocks, any deviant steering would put oars on the rocks.  The warm up lane is half the required width. Lane 1 would need to be included to provide a safe warm up lane.  This would leave a 4 lane course.
The docks are almost completely on land.  This would require a wade in.  Only 3 boats could be handled at once and it's not foot friendly.
In short I don't think we could run this year's FIRA on the bypass without a major format change.  We should consider a venue shift for this year......Bill

Here are the bridge posts under Interstate 4...

A view of the warm up lane near the start.  The water was up to the grey rocks before, the white rocks were under water and any green and rust colored growth was once under water.

Better launch skeg first...

The tree used to be on the tip of the point, the rest under water.  Shallow, but under water.

Now you can drive down the public boat ramp around the berm and into the park!  And it looks like somebody has, alot...

Good luck docking ...
