It's that time of the year again. We hope everyone had a good rewarding season and are excited about getting ready for a great sprint season!
The Big Bend Ergomania, hosted by Maclay Crew, is coming up on January 31st (2 weeks prior to Southern Sprints). This is a great opportunity to set a fast benchmark in a competitive environment for your rowers.
A few changes to this upcoming year's Ergomania:
1. Later starting time so teams do not have to spend the night in Tallahassee. 2. Model D Concept II ergs for races. 3. Due to it's success we decided to keep the Moms and Dads event which features a 500m race earning points for the overall team trophy.
Hope to see you there!

You live life beyond your PC. So now Windows goes beyond your PC. See how
I am in a bit of a jam, one of our boats is out in repairs and was suppose to be finished by tomorrow. It is not. Does any team attending the Hooch this weekend have a 2x that will hold 165lbs rowers and will be available for the Men's Youth 2x at 5:15?
Safety update
All,
Just FYI, Glenn Merry, US Rowing's Executive Director will be in
Washington DC next Monday presenting USRowing's
safety program to the US Coast Guard.
We were invited to attend their annual conference on best practices.
We have been happily able to update the old safety DVD with a grant from
USCG in the past year.
I would encourage all of you to view this video.

There is a correction to the message sent below. The next Florida Regional Camp is November 8th & 9th (not January) at the OARS boathouse. If you are sending athletes, please make sure they bring a signed USRowing Waiver with them. Directions to our boathouse are available on our website at www.oars-online.com

To all Florida Coaches,
First, let me thank the Plant coaches, Matt and Skye, the parent's organization represented by Hunter Hamrick as well as Marilyn Samaha and the TBCRC for hosting/sponsoring the first regional camp at the Palm River facility in Tampa. It was a fantastic weekend and the athletes were fun to work with and I believe it really opened their eyes to what the Junior National Team is all about and things they need to work on both individually and collectively. We had mini-sessions on technical aspects, nutrition, core work, strength training, erg technique, did some sub-maximal testing so athletes can now monitor their own winter training gains AND we also rowed 3 sessions! It was a busy weekend for sure! And in the end, the athletes and coaches now see the development/ selection program up close and personal and I was able to see that there were at least 8 athletes that are now on our preliminary invitation lists for either Selection Camp or Development Camp. This is fantastic!
January 8-9 Regional Camp
The January 8-9 Camp has been changed to the Orlando because of the conflict with the Head of the South participation by the northern Florida programs and Kirsten Anderson from OARS has graciously offered to host the November event. We will start the weekend at 1:00 on Saturday, an hour earlier than last time, and end at 3:00 on Sunday to accomodate everyone's travels. I am once again asking coaches to send their top athletes, with eye towards those 5' 8" or taller and they must have a 1991 birthdate or younger and/or athletes that are 5' 11" or taller and have 1993 or 1994 birthdates. This camp will focus on two main themes; 1) technical changes on the water with extensive video/review and 2) the critical importance of core strength and how to develop it over the winter months. We will repeat the submaximal testing to see where the athletes progress for those who attended in October and to get baselines on folks who we see for the first time at this camp. I will also be accompanied by a member of the Junior National Team coaching staff in order to maximize the coach to athlete ratio as we work on these critical areas.
I am asking coaches to please e-mail me the names, hts, wts and birthdates of athletes you are sending to the camp by November 1. Obviously, the more we can keep the athletes the same, the bigger the benefit to your program. However, if you have seen younger athletes in your program on a very steep learning curve, let's get them involved. In any case, please rank order them if you are proposing more than 2 athletes because if the numbers get larger than 32 rowers we will need to limit the number of athletes per program. I am also hoping that we have participation from more programs from across Florida for this camp so we can truly evaluate the effectiveness of this model.
Thanks again for your participation and support of this program and I can already see that Florida athletes will play a bigger role in our developent and selection programs.
Best regards,
Steve

Please see the note below from Steve Hargis regarding the Junior Women's Camp this weekend.
There were two questions that I had for Steve when we spoke today, which I will share with you. First, should we bring rowers who are ineligible for this year's junior team (i.e. born in 1990), but who may have elite potential. The answer is YES. Any rower, particularly an athletic (and large) senior is welcome. Second, I asked about novice rowers who may develop into talents later. Again, the answer was YES. If your program has a novice rower with a lot of potential, they are very much invited to participate.
Steve asserted that the point of these series of camps is to get as many girls, and eventually boys, into the Development system.
If you have anyone that you want to include, please contact Steve by Wednesday.
Thanks,

Hi Dan,
Just wanted to follow-up and ask if you could send out a final e-mail reminder to folks. So far I have received responses from Hillsborough, Sarasota Scullers, Sebastian River, Pine Crest, OARS, Miami RC, ROCCS, Episcopal and Plant. I know everyone is really busy but I would like to finalize logistics for the weekend by Wednesday. So if they could look at their athlete pool and identify the athletes they would like to involve in this program and get back to me before Wednesday, I would greatly appreciate it. The feedback that I have received has been very positive and many are not only using this to expose their athletes to the excitement and the possibilities of the Jr Women's National Team but many are hoping that the attendees will come back and serve to inspire others around them. This was the hope and ony the coaches can help make this a reality.
Thanks again to you and entire FSRA for makinkg this possible and I look forward to working with the FRSA athletes and coaches this weekend,
Steve

For those of you who attended the FSRA Annual Meeting, you saw US Junior Women's Coach Steve Hargis talk about the new Development model that the junior team is instituting.
Florida has a phenomenal opportunity to lead in this program. Steve has arranged for several developmental training weekends throughout the year.
The first one is in Tampa on the first weekend in October. See all the information below and on the attachment.

Dear Coaches,
I have attached the information and itinerary for the Florida Regional Camps I introduced at the FSRA Annual Meeting. I am very much looking to working with you and your athletes as we continue to build a strong base in support of our national system!
In support of this unique effort in the State of Florida, I am asking each team to send/bring two (2) athletes from each program...a comfort factor for athletes for sure. The criteria I would like to use for the selection of the athletes is a) one should be your very top athlete who is 5' 8" or taller and is a 1991 birthday or younger with under a 7:30 spring erg potential and b) the second should be your top 1993 birthday (Jr B) or younger who is 5' 9 or taller and with an under 8:00 erg potential in the spring. If you don't have a 1993 that fits that then please look at a 1992 birthday. Also, the more we can keep these athletes the same thoughout the four dates, that would be the best.
To get this effort started, the Tampa Bypass Canal Rowing Council, represented by Marilyn Samaha, has stepped forward to support USRowing by hosting the first regional camp at their Palm River Facility in Tampa. I have provided the physical address below if anyone needs to forward directions to athletes and their parents.
Palm River Facility
5511 East Washington Street
Tampa, FL 33619-3442
Each athlete will be responsible for their own hotel arrangements and their Sunday breakfast for the weekend. The Saturday evening dinner, the Sunday lunch and snacks will be provided at the facility.
I would greatly appreciate your identifying the athlete(s) and sending me their names, birthdate, height, weight and USRowing number via e-mail by Friday, September 26 so that I can finalize the logistics for the weekend. Checks for the camp should be made payable to 'USRowing' and will be accepted on-site.
In light of economic realities the Miami mart Hotel has agreed to drop their rates from to $99/night for the Miami International Regatta. Contact information to make your reservations is as follows. If anyou have had a look at how nice this hotel is you will realize what a tremendous value this is.
We are the original owners of both boats and I can give you the serial numbers of each if you would like to call the boat companies. None of the boats have been on salt water and are both in excellent condition. You are welcome to come over and take a look if you would like.
We are very excited to be hosting this year's GatorHead Regatta at
Newnans Lake and look forward to providing a good course that is also
Novice friendly. The 7,500 acre lake that borders East Gainesville is
surrounded by stately cypress trees draped in Spanish moss, Sabal
palms, and other native trees and plants. Wildlife watching along its
shores includes wading birds and nesting bald eagles and osprey.
(Because of the abundant wildlife in the area, we strongly emphasize
that it would be best to leave dogs at home for this event. Insect
repellent is also recommended). If you have seen the real Florida,
Newnans Lake is a great slice of what our state looks like without all
of the development. Home to both Gainesville Area Rowing and Florida
Crew, the University of Florida's rowing club, the lake is a great
spot for canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and biking. We will have a
shuttle running between the boat launching area and the spectator
area at Palm Point, but if you do not mind a little excercise bring a
bicycle or walk the 1.5 mile lakeside road.
REGISTRATION & FEES

I will be pulling a trailer to HOOCH leaving Orlando EARLY Friday (10/31) morning in order to arrive at the venue just after mid-day.
Boats would need to be brought to Turkey Lake Park to be loaded before Thursday night (10/30).
I will be pulling out and headed back to Orlando on Sunday (11/2) at noon.
The regatta team for the Miami International Regatta has already begun preparations for the Miami International Regatta on March 7th 2009, and would like to pass on a significant development.
We are proud to announce that the Miami Mart Airport Hotel has stepped forward to become one of our premium sponsors. They have drastically reduced their room rates in the height of the college spring break season for travelling teams on Friday Night March 6th.
The rate for the rooms is $129 +tax whether a double or king. The hotel is about 8 miles from the course. I personally visited the hotel and can attest that it is a "nice" place where coaches , rowers, officials, and parents will be comfortable. It has a pool, good restaurant, and a nice bar (important for parents...) It will be practically impossible to find a nicer hotel at this price in Miami during spring break.
I am encouraging your "Travel Coordinators" to contact the hotel directly as soon as possible and make reservations. I would recommend that you give the hotel a rough idea of the number of rooms you need now and then as you get closer to the regatta finalize the exact number.
Your contact person at the Miami Mart Hotel is as follows;
For those of you that like to put on a team breakfast they have the facilities and staff to do that as well.
More updates on improvements and surprises for the Miami Regatta to follow but I wanted to get this one out early as many of you are already making plans for the spring.
Jacksonville Episcopal is looking for two qualified assistant coaches to work with the girls' program this spring. Our season runs January through the end of April, with practice 6 days a week. 3:30-6pm on weekdays, 8-11am on Saturdays when there is no regatta. One assistant would work with the returning girls and the other would work with the novice (mostly middle school) girls. Please email girls' head coach Cristi Peterson Skeels if interested and please forward to anyone in the Jacksonville area who may be interested. cristipeterson@...

I know many of you are making your schedule for the year. I want to go ahead and give you a heads up on the Regional Championship.
Due to AP test and Baccalaureate testing on the second weekend of May. I have received a lot of feedback and request to schedule the regatta differently. I hope that with this much heads up you can make plans accordingly.
The Southeast Youth Championships will be held in Oak Ridge, TN. On the Melton Lake Rowing Venue on May 2-3 2009. Remember, that the Florida States and Dogwood regatta will continue to be used to seed the regional championship.
There is a SAT Test that day so please make plans.
Thank you for your continue support of youth rowing.
I will see most of you at the Hooch. We will do a Southeast Coaches meeting after the C&C meeting Friday night.
