I have created a page for each member team on www.rowiki.com. If you have any computer savy people on your team, you may want to update your page like Stanton has: http://www.rowiki.com/index.php?title=Stanton_College_Prep

If you host an annual event, there is places to add venues and regattas.

You can also update the US Rowing club locator: http://www.rowingeducation.org/clubmap.htm

Boone Crew's Inaugural Head of the Giblet is being held to provide a low cost low hassle race for Florida crews of all types, juniors, masters, novices, elite, and even coaches. The course was designed to be challenging for experienced crews, manageable for novice crews, visible for spectators, and approved by local U.S. Rowing officials.

Despite the impression that the course map gives, (use the Florida Turnpike at the bottom of the map for size reference) the turns are wide and sweeping, and will offer coxswains the opportunity to really affect their crew’s time and performance. The 5 straight-a-ways, from 700m-1000m in length, will let your oarsmen open up the stroke ratings for the last race of the season before entering winter training sessions. The closed loop offers parents and relatives a continuous view of their athlete’s boat in a race. (Bring binoculars for the back stretch.) Our Alumni race, with no entry fees, allows crews to collect a boat rental donation from alumni to raise some end of the season funds, and a free coaches’ race to let the kids know YOU STILL GOT IT!

Wrap up your season with a fun local race and come to Turkey Lake for the first annual, pre-Thanksgiving regattas, and answer the question….GOT GIBLETS?

Regatta News and Updates:

Just one week remains to get your entries in. Do it now at www.regattacentral.com .

New events added, by popular demand.

Doubling permitted….get the whole fleet out there!

U.S. Rowing Official, Marty Weiner, tours the course and gives it his seal of approval.

To all Jacksonville teams or teams traveling to the Hooch this weekend,

The Jacksonville Rowing Club has a mens youth 4+ entry for this weekend (event 12 @ 10:15 am).  We loaded our trailer this afternoon for our rower parent who drives it to regattas.  I just received a call that he hit a tree and 3 feet of the stern was literally broken off the boat.  This boat is the only rowable 4+ we have right now and the boys that were going to row in it have worked so hard and are so excited to race.  I am hoping that someone reading this email can relate to such a situation and help us out.  We will rent or borrow any 4+ we can get our hands on.  Please email or call me if you can help or know someone who might be able to. Thank you!!

Dear FSRA Coaches:

The purpose of this memo is to correct two (2)  statements that were made in an email, dated October 30, from the LOC.  The incorrect statements  were not intentional and were based on assumptions that were not verified. First, the course was not approved by local USRowing officials and secondly, Marty Wiener did not give the course his seal of approval. Mike Chambers and I did tour the course on October 17 and made numerous suggestions that needed to be implemented before we considered it safe for the rowers. I will be glad to answer any questions by email or telephone.  Thanks.

Lee,

Isn't this another duplication of effort. FSRA already tries to maintain our team blades on our own site, meaning I go to local regattas and take digital photos of blades I notice or have been told they changed. Allen Eubanks of SE Region has pulled our designs into his regional website. Now you are trying to pull this info into your regatta site. And I have seen others pop recently. With so many different data bases of designs the problem is when a team changes their design, which seems to happen more often then you would think it should, it gets very confusing as to who has the correct current design. This especially becomes a factor if this information is passed on to regatta officials, as most claim to need this data for in the first place. I hope the regatta LOC and other officials like yourself accept all responsibilities for designs they may use and distribute because these days teams have no way of knowing where their design are posted. Heaven forbid the official who reprimands a crew for not being in official colors because that official is using out dated information.

So let us keep this very simple.

The best solution might be to submit to the international website: http://www.oarspotter.com/. Everyone can pull what they need from there. Oar spotter even keep track of changes and differences between front and back sides and port and starboard. Otherwise, I suggest teams continue to maintain their designs locally on the FSRA website and you and others can pull what you need each year.

Thanks, Brice

Unfortunatly we are having trouble with our web page so the link on www.floridarowing.org is an outdated page.  Please download the registration packed from: http://ww2.cs.fsu.edu/~peress/ergomania2008.pdf

Good morning coaches,

I go on the FSRA contact list occasionally to verify any changes in coach/staff at the various programs in Florida and find much of it seems to be in need of updating.   Some of the information (incorrect contacts) is over 2 years old, so I would ask the members of the group to take the time to make the appropriate changes to your organization’s staff info.

Thanks for taking the time to adjust things as needed,

Attached is the regatta packet for the 25th Annual Southern Sprints. Note
that the changes are highlighted (for the most part). This will also be
available on the web site www.southernsprints.org as soon as we get to
launch (should be this week or so).

Whenever the site goes live, registration will be immediately open for any
of you early birds. Until then, you can have the race packet now for
reference to prepare for your entry. Again, we strongly encourage use of
the on-line tools to do your registration. I will go through and send out
the access passwords to those accounts. I will try to cross reference the

To all FSRA Coaches;
Just a quick notice to all teams that next year will be the 35th
anniversary for the Miami International Regatta which will be held on
March 8th 2008. In honor of this rich longstanding rowing tradition,
the team at the Miami Rowing Club is planning a big celebration, and
spectacular regatta.

The Miami International Regatta has always been a unique event, and
in 2008 it will have the distinct honor of kicking off the spring
season for many teams. Preparations are already underway and you all
can expect to experience one of the premier youth rowing events in
the state. We have an experienced and dedicated Regatta team and are
working on some ideas and surprises to make a great event even better.
It is going to be a very exciting and rich experience for your
athletes and their parents, and I know you all will not want to miss
it.

I will be making contact with you coaches in the near future for your
input and thoughts on events, schedules, and any other advice you
would like to contribute.

From the Vancouver Lake Crew:
At 12:24 pm on Thursday January 10th, 2008 a tornado touched down near Vancouver Lake on top of the Vancouver Lake Erg house and rowing shells. The EF1 tornado lifted the club's two buildings off of the ground and scattered them over 300 feet away completely destroying the contents. All 18 training ergs were destroyed along with all the equipment and supplies. Out of the approximately 50 shells stored at the site only 3 survived the falling trees and blowing debris. Hundreds of thousands of dollars of equipment has been destroyed.

Vancouver Lake Crew needs your support to continue the program. Donations of money, boats, supplies, etc are all appreciated. An account has been set up at Bank of Clark County for VLC. Donations can be sent to

Vancouver Lake Crew began in February 2002. It is a non-profit organization dedicated to the development of the youth of Clark County. VLC offers year-round rowing opportunities for rowers of all ages. We have adult recreational and competitive rowing, a middle school and high school team, summer boating camps. We outreach within the community and offer a "learn to row" day for blind students at the WA School for the Blind. Rowing is a great aerobic exercise, and is physically and mentally challenging.

Coaches,

I am going to try to identify the top individuals in our district by
starting the Southeast Youth Rowing All-District Team. I want to select
athletes that are top in rowing and scholastics. I want to get them a little
more PR if that is possible.

I will take information on top 25% of finishers male and female from
regional Indoor Erg Events this January. I will then attempt to email the
programs and get information submitted to select a first team (8), second
team (8) and honorable mention (8). I am still working on coxswain
selection.

Information will be: (example)

Name:
Program:
Height:
Weight:
Erg Score: Pulled from Erg Events
GPA:
ACT:
SAT:
Competitive History
Local News contacts

Once selected I will ask for a pic from the program to post on the website
and in regional media.

If any of you have ideas on this please share them with me.

Coaches -

Just a reminder that there is less than a week to get your team registered for Southern Sprints.  Up on the group are of the web site, I see about 20 or more high schools/clubs that haven't migrated their rosters yet.  If you used the group area last year and have any problem accessing your group area (lost password, coaching changes, etc), please let me know.  We need to get all entries into the system by next Saturday.  As always, it helps us out if you mail us your payment and waivers ahead of time.

If you need a race packet, that can be obtained up on www.southernsprints.org.  The information is available as HTML page content as well as in a PDF file you can download.  Although the program of events has stayed the same, there are some changes as you have seen in the race packet.  The 25th Annual Southern Sprints will also see some attractive changes in the awards medals given out this year.  For the first time we have our own design - front and back - and there is a fairly obvious tie in with this particular anniversary year...

Regards
John

FSRA Coaches,

The OARS Regatta information is now posted on Regatta Central.  Please take a moment to review the regatta packet and note some of the changes for 2008.  There has been an interest in adding a pair event to the regatta.  If you are attending the regatta and would enter crews to this event, please e-mail to let me know.  If our schedule can accomodate the event, we will add it.
In addition to the juniors rowing, we will once again be offering masters events on Sunday.  The masters events will be posted to Regatta Central shortly.

Thanks,
Kirsten Anderson
