As an involved parent in the Lake Brantley Crew Team, I'd like to take a minute a thank all of the participants, coaches, officials, volunteers and parents that helped to make this years' Novice Regtta at Lake Fairview, Orlando, one of the best ever. We all made a lot of new friends from around the state and welcomed some old friends. We really had a great turn-out, and a great deal of the credit goes to you, the people of FSRA that help make this, and other regattas like it, possible. Thanks a lot and we're looking forward to a great year of spirited racing.

We are currently working to post all of the times at our teams' web-site. We hope to have them completed by Wednesday. Just follow the link below to the results page.

Thanks again,
Bert

Subject: Mayor's Cup Update # 2
RowFL@...

Hi Gang,

Just a reminder to be sure and read the changes that were sent out in the
first update.  They are listed below.

The only other change is that we will awarding first place medals only, but
to the winner of each flight.  The three places based on times between
flights is the format we use at the championship events, not during early
season races.

At this point, due to the logistical problems associated with tent issues, we
will simply ask people not to erect tents until after 4:30 PM on Friday.

In an e-mail following this one, a USRA waiver is attached which all of your
rowers must sign, including the parents of minors.  They may be turned in to
the registration desk the day of the regatta.

:-)  Martyn Dennis

THE FOLLOWING IS FROM UPDATE # 1...

Dear Coaches,

In order to attempt to make the regatta go more smoothly, we will be sending
out updates as necessary to keep everyone informed and to exchange ideas.  If
you have any concerns or suggestions as to how we can make the regatta
better, please contact either myself or Bram Fowler and we will do our best
to accomodate people.
Here are some things to consider in this first update...

Event Titles: First of all, we decided to go back to the traditional event
titles, men's and women's, not boys and girls.  The changes are made on the
attached document. You may use either the one you received last week or the
new ones to enter.

Senior Category:  We will offer flexibility regarding rowers that may turn 19
before September 1, 2001.  It seems that some seniors were well on their way
with their rowing this year when the categories were changed so we will
consider them grandfathered in.  Bram Fowler said that the FSRA will also do
the same with rowers at this year's state race. What happens to other
underclassmen in future years is up to the coaches to decide at the fall FSRA
meeting.

Doubling:  The no doubling rule was put in place to allow all the schools
that wanted to attend, a chance to participate in the regatta.  With racing
scheduled the entire day, time constraints made it impractical to allow crews
to break an eight into two fours to give them two races.  However, several
coaches have expressed concerns that some rowers that may not be racing by
the end of the season need to have their races early in the season.

In order to give everyone a race, we are willing to allow doubling to the
degree that this goal is accomplished.   We ask that you try to minimize the
rowers you double to do this.  We will also require that doubling requests be
submitted in writing and will be posted for public inspection.  A form has
been added to the end of the regatta packet for this purpose.  The entire
packet, including revisions, is attached.

Last year at least two programs violated the no doubling rule, one very much
intentionally, and those programs are on probation this year.  Those
decisions to play by their own rules DID affect the outcome of those races.
They know who they are.  If they do it again, they will not be invited back
next year.

Tents:  If you would like to set up a tent bigger than 10' X 10', you will
need to let us know as soon as possible so that we can add you to the permit
we must file for this event.  We will file it ten days before the regatta.

We are rounding up the details of this process but we do know that the three
main concerns are 1) being fire retardant 2) if it is installed properly and
3) placement.  Until we can hammer out the details, we need each program that
wants to put up a tent to contact us so we can make up a special contact list
to send them the exact process.

Our main goal has always been to promote a regatta that is both safe and fair
and we will continue to do so.  It is certainly a challenge to offer this
full slate of events to all these schools within the allotted time of dawn to
dusk.  We appreciate your cooperation in making it happen.

Good luck with your training, and remember to emphasize starting line
procedures to your crews!

:-)  Martyn Dennis

Hello fellow Coaches and Rowers,

I would like to host a coxswain clinic on Sunday February 25. There would
be no cost to anyone, except for your own travel expenses of course.

When: Sunday Feb 25 9am-12pm
Where: Stetson University
Who: All colleges and High schools invited
Why: Safety, boat handling and Rules of Racing

Instructors will be several area coaches and referees. It will be all
classroom material, no on the water training. Coaches are asked to
immediately practice some of the concepts the next 2-3practices. If you
are interested, please contact me soon. This is the only real time left
before racing really starts. The 17-18 is Daytona 500 and the area is
packed with gridlock on the Interstates.

Hey everyone,

There is a USRowing Judge-Referee Clinic this weekend and I have been
nominated to run a section about Coaches and Referees.
Please take a minute and help me out.

My questions to you are:
1. What are your problems with JR's?

2. What are your compliments?

3. What do you think can be improved?

4. Would a basic publication about Rules of Racing be good?

5. We are aware that one problem is that usually the only time coaches and
referees interact is during problems (i.e. protests, warnings etc.). How
can we make this better?

6 Any additional comments?

Thanks for your help. I will try to pass on our findings back to you.

As many of you know, the water levels in Turkey Lake are very low and they
continue to fall. With the current lake level, it will not be possible to
race the 1,500 course that we have raced in the past. For this reason we
have decided to move the Hood Cup location to the Tampa By-Pass Canal. The
date will remain April 21, 2001. We hope that inconveniences due to this
relocation will be few.

The race at the By-Pass canal late in April will be a good opportunity for
all crews to race the State course. It is our intention to schedule
championship events in a heats to finals format, as we did with much success
last year.

Hi Gang,

Here are just a few things to consider:

Junior Age Category -  It has been pointed out to me tonight that I made a
mistake during this year of transition to new racing categories.  The correct
age to determine a "junior" rower should read " Junior - Under 17 years on or
before 9/01/2000, not 2001 as I sent out in the regatta packet.  I confirmed
the information on the Scholastic Nationals website and the FSRA website.

My apologies to any coaches that went with the incorrect information in
forming your boatings for the Mayor's Cup.  Even though the entry deadline is
tomorrow, I will accept changes up until Wednesday of next week.  If you need
to re-arrange any boatings and hence entries, just drop me a note with the
changes.

Tents - For this year, we will follow tent procedures as we have in the past,
first come, first served with no permits.

That's all for now!  Let me know if you have any questions.

:-)  Martyn Dennis

Dear Coaches,

Attached is a spreadsheet with the initial entries to the 2001 Mayor's Cup
Regatta.
Please review them and e-mail me with corrections or changes.

Following this e-mail is another with the revised racing schedule based on
how the number of entries affected the number of flights required.  Events
that had a time change are marked with an askerisk, but the time shifts were
slight.

I am sure by now that most teams that wished to enter the regatta have, but
if I have missed someone, please let me know.

Once I have received the changes by the first of the week, I will return the
schedule with flight and lane assignments.  I offered an expanded entry form
giving coaches input as to which flights, as a full team of men or women,
they felt their team could be entered.   The responses were quite varied and
I will do the best I can to balance the flights.

Feel free to e-mail me or call with any questions you might have.

Hi Gang,

Attached is the most current version of the race schedule, headed to print.
Changes will still be accepted at the coaches meeting.  If you have any more
to e-mail me prior to the meeting, they can be incorporated before then.  I
know how hard it is to juggle all these things to give everyone a race, so
good luck!  The most notable change is a second flight created in the Women's
Senior 8... more medals!

The race course is set up with bouys every 250 meters.  Finished it today and
it looks like it is 1450 meters.  The weather forecast is good so barring any
stiff winds, we should be able to use the course and not change it.

Crews practicing there Friday are welcome to use the course. We will have a
few of the new FSRA launches at the lake for coaches to use if they want to
go out with their crews.  These will be available on a first come, first
served basis.  Just come see me to line one up.

If you do practice, make sure your crews follow a clockwise pattern, as there
are three high schools that regularly take that pattern in the afternoon.
Please be off the water by 6:30.  It gets pitch dark by 7.

It looks like the fires west of Orlando towards Tampa will keep Interstate 4
closed for the weekend.  A few people have called asking directions around
it, but I am a home grown Orlando boy who only takes I-4 to Tampa.  One
person suggested using Highway 50.  I say get a good map, call AAA, ask
people who travel this way for business, something like that.

Parking will be a challenge with 24 teams and all, but if everyone cooperates
with the parking staff, things should be fine.  The park gate is locked at 11
PM, so get there before that.

That's all for now.  Over and out!

:-)  Martyn Dennis

2001 OARS REGATTA

The OARS Regatta is a one-day event sponsored by the Orlando Area Rowing Society
featuring approximately 25 rowing organizations in a broad range of competition.
OARS invites you to join us on Saturday, March 24, 2001 at Turkey Lake Park for
an exciting day of racing. Turkey Lake Park offers ample parking, restroom
facilities and concessions. Please encourage your family and friends to come
out and watch. Although the location of the racecourse on the lake has changed
due to low water, we still expect this to be a good spectator regatta.

Date: March 24, 2001

Location: Turkey Lake Park (TLP) is located at 3410 Hiawassee Rd., Orlando, FL
32835; phone 497-299-5594. There will be a $2 per vehicle fee to enter the
park. In order to leave the park and re-enter later you will need to obtain a
re-entry ticket at the main gate. Children are not allowed in the lake.
Parents of young children must have them under supervision at all times and out
of the way of boat movement. Dogs are permitted in the park but must be on a
leash. The regatta is held in an environmentally sensitive area......please do
not litter.

As I am sure some of you know SRA has decided to stay with the 145 pound weight for men. At the FSRA fall meeting we decided to use whatever weight they used. At the mayors cup we rowed a 150 pound weight. (as Martin said giving a 5 pound allowance at the beginning of the season). We rowed last year states at 150 expecting SRA to drop their mid weight and raise the 145 weight to 150. The Stotesburry regatta did in fact change their lightweight weight to 150, however SRA has kept theirs at 145.
I have no objection on discussing this even though we have already made a decision to go with what SRA is using.
E-Mail me your thoughts and a final decision will be made by this FRIDAY.

Bram.

Bram,

Go with 145, let's stay with SRA limits.  The women's weight is now 120 (Mayor's cup was 125 for early season) so let's keep the weights as voted on.  Mike Vertullo made a very good argument about slowly bringing the weights down over the course of the spring to safely get the kids down to SRA weights.  This will benefit those going to Scholastics (along with the  SR/JR re-classification as well.)

Hi Bram,

When I offered the weights for lightweights at the Mayor's Cup at
150men/125women I did it thinking that the 145/120 weights listed on the FSRA
website were the current standard. I didn't know anything about the flurry
of e-mails prior to last year's state race and the decision to race the men
at 150 for 2000. And I didn't know anything about the FSRA waiting for the
SRA to decide what it would do on the issue. I was simply trying to follow
what the colleges have done for years by giving the lightweights a five pound
allowance prior to April 1. I thought my wording was clear enough, but at
least one coach got confused and thought I meant 155 for the men.

I know the most important issue you are trying to get feedback for by Friday
is what the weights should be for this year's state race. In addition, for
regular season race planning, I would like to know if people like the idea of
allowing a different weight(s) prior to states or it should just be 145/120
period.

Mike Vertullo, coach of the Winter Park women's crew suggested that weights
might come down gradually during the spring. How would that work exactly?
If 145 were the target for the men, then would it be 150 in February, 148 in
March, 146 in April, 145 by May? I am just trying to remember what he
suggested and am trying to prompt some discussion on that kind of a system so
the regular season regattas have some idea what you would like to see.

Finally, I think this is the year I will roll out an idea I have been
considering for the past few years. I will be sending out more information
soon, after I have wrapped up the Mayor's Cup details. For years regular
season regattas have used the FSRA State Championships as a guideline, but
basically did whatever they wanted on several issues.

I think it is time to begin to establish dialogue between representatives of
whichever regattas that which to participate on how to offer some consistency
during the season and run our races better. I was trying to come up with a
name and I like the Rowing Regatta Association of Florida (RRAFL). This
effort would be to support the FSRA, not compete with it.

Details at 11.

:-) Martyn

Just a suggestion for the light women:  124 on 3/10(Orlando Cities)
                                                         122 on 4/21(Hood Cup)
                                                         120 on 5/12(States)
These are the races we're attending at WP and is what I believe to be a safe weight loss pace for those trying to get ready for Stotes and SRA's.  The men may want to consider the same??

Howdy,

Does anyone have a rower named Elliott Junco? Leon picked up a bag at the
Novice regatta with clothes/ID that does not belong to us.

The bag contains clothes and an ID. Let me know if this belongs to one of
your kids and I will get it to you.

Thanks,

Tom

Howdy,

Upon further inspection of the missing bag, it turns out that Elliot Junco
rows for MAST.

Will Mast be at The Oars Invite?

If not can I get a mailing address so I can ship the bag down.
