Coaches,

Please answer the following so we can put together a plan for our annual fall coaches meeting. I would prefer one reply per team, preferably from the head coach.

1) Which of the following Saturdays are you NOT available: August 18, August 25, Sept. 8, Sept 15 (If all are ok, please state so.)

2) If you are located in Central Florida area, do you have a room to host the meeting? It needs to be able to seat at least 80 people and be available from noon to 4 pm. Please reply with the location and person who will make the arrangements.

Also, if you have any discussion items you would like on the agenda, please include those with your answers to the above.

Thanks,

Brice A. Crossley

The Orlando Rowing Club is in need of space for an Eight (8) on a
trailer going to Masters Nationals (August in Oakridge, TN). Being in
Central Florida, we can get the shell if needed to another site in
Florida that is north of Orlando, or drive to say I-75 or I-95 to meet
a trailer that is coming out of South Florida. If able, please contact
via email both Linda Rich (cre8havoc@...) and Keith Young
(youngk1@...). Thank you.

Greetings all,

Stetson University Crew still has scholarship money avaliable for
incoming freshman ladies this fall. We seem to have 1 or 2 freshman
each fall with high school expereince and are not aware of the
athletic scholarship opprotunity Stetson has to offer. Once the get
to school its too late. We would like to see this money used because
it does us no good sitting around. If you know of any of your
athletes that are attending Stetson University this fall and may want
to row in college please forward my information to them;

Chris Thomas
Assistant Coach

Also, if you have any rising seniors this season that are looking to
row in college keep Stetson in mind. We will continue to be
recruiting 5-7 athletes a year.

Take care and enjoy the rest of the summer off.

SEATS, TRACKS, SHOES, OARS, etc… if you need we have it!!

Stetson University has a ton of parts for sale. These are parts
salvaged from our fleet after a tornado leveled our boathouse on
February 2, 2007. All parts are in great working condition (unless
otherwise stated) and will provide years of use. The bulk of the
parts came from 2005-2006 Vespoli M2 4+s and 8+s. Furthermore, I have
labeled each part with the appropriate Vespoli part # for your
convenience and reference.

http://www.bama.ua.edu/~thoma160/Boat%20Parts%20Inventory.xls

Please click link above to view the list of parts, prices, condition,
etc…

Since then we have replaced our fleet and these are the excess spare
parts. This is first come first serve. You pay shipping or we can
deliver to the 2007 Head of the Hooch (or pass them off to another
team).

Please email or call with any comments, questions, or concerns.

We are working on securing a location in Orlando for Saturday, August 18. An agenda with bulleted discussion items will be sent at least 2 weeks prior to allow those who plan to send proxies to understand what is planned at the meeting.

In an effort to improve recognition of youth rowing in Florida and of your individual teams in your local communities, I'm asking you to provide the following when you register at the meeting. I plan to have pre and post regatta press releases for the state championship. Also, please remember to bring your $150 membership fee with you (checks payable to FSRA). FYI: you don't vote if you are delinquent on dues and 'in the mail' does not count as paid.

Typed on a sheet of paper (at the meeting) or email to me (prior to the meeting), I would like the following: (Unless you indicate otherwise, this info will be listed online.)
- The team's name
- The booster's name (if different than the team's name)
- The team's mailing address (for regatta registration items)
- The team's web address
- The primary coaching contact including cell phone and email. If you have separate primary for boys and girls then provide both.
- Booster president or admin and available contact info.
- (Optional) Coaching staff and available contact info. Only those with email addresses will be listed online.

Please note that many school systems block yahoo emails, so don't include those.

New info:
- Team's hometown
- Team's hometown newspaper(s)
- Newspaper high school sports page contact info including phone number and email.

Thanks,

Subject: New Text Messaging recruiting rules for NCAA coaches
rowingcoach_jg
Send Email Send Email

Coaches,

I wanted to pass on to you the new rules governing text
messaging/Instant Messaging by college coaches to potential student
athletes (read: high school rowers). I know a lot of your student-
athletes use text messaging and Instant Messaging to communicate and
some may even be moving away from or may not even look at their
email. If any of your athletes are looking to be or are being
recruited by NCAA schools please tell them to check their email
regularly. The coaches at DI (and soon coaches at DII schools) will
not be able to send the student-athletes cell phone text messages or
communicate via Instant Messaging systems starting August 1, 2007.

For the legal eagles out their I have attached a copy of the DI
rules and the NCAA notice on the DII rule adoption.

Please feel free to contact me at gartin@... or 954-262-8273
with any questions.

Thank You!

John Gartin, Women's Rowing Coach
Nova Southeastern University

Division I Rule:
13.4.1.2 Electronic Transmissions. Effective Date: Aug 01, 2007
Electronically transmitted correspondence that may be sent to a
prospective student-athlete is limited to electronic mail and
facsimiles. (See Bylaw 13.1.7.2.) All other forms of electronically
transmitted correspondence (e.g., Instant Messenger, text messaging)
are prohibited. Color attachments may be included with electronic
mail correspondence sent to a prospective student-athlete, provided
the attachment only includes information that is not created for
recruiting purposes, except for items that are specifically
permitted as printed recruiting materials (e.g., questionnaires).
In addition, attachments shall not include any animation, audio or
video clips and there shall be no cost (e.g., subscription fee)
associated with sending the item attached to the electronic mail
correspondence.

Division II advances modified text-message proposal

The Division II Management Council backed modified text-message
limits during its July 23-24 in Washington, D.C., that may provide a
middle ground for people who favor outright elimination and others
who want no restrictions at all.

The compromise came after a motion to reconsider an earlier decision
to ask the Presidents Council to send a proposal to eliminate text
messaging to the Convention floor. The amendment would allow text
messaging only after a prospect has signed a National Letter of
Intent or has signed the institution's written offer of financial
aid or admission.

That seemed to satisfy members who don't see text messaging as a
relevant recruiting tool and others who believe it beats the e-
mail/fax alternative for delivering information.

The Division II Presidents Council will consider the issue during
its August 9 conference call, and both the Management and Presidents
Councils will review the matter one more time during their fall
meetings before the membership decides the issue at the Convention.

Division I approved legislation in April that bans text messaging
beginning August 1. Enough override requests were received, however,
to require the Board of Directors to reconsider the issue at its
August 9 meeting. If the Board upholds its April decision, the text-
messaging ban would last at least until a Division I membership vote
at a Convention business session January 12.

What I sent previously was that we are working on securing a location in Orlando for Saturday, August 18. Unfortunately, we were unable to confirm that date with several locations we are in talks with (lots of weddings, etc.). I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause but also realize that the results of my earlier question as to when best to hold the meeting showed that every Saturday was inconvenient for at least 2 programs. FYI: Previous school room use is now unavailable due to large liability issues.

I know some of you know Gavin very well, and some of you have never heard of him.  He used to coach with me @ Bishop Moore, and then we both went over to OARS.  He's put most of his life on hold to row and he's made the Lt. 8+ that will race in Munich in a couple of weeks.  As we are all aware, USRowing doesn't fund non-Olympic events too well and Gavin is going to have to spend around $4000 to represent our nation.  He thought about selling a kidney on the black market, but after some careful thought decided against it for obvious recovery reasons.  Other than that, without a meaningful job (not too many employers cater to the random periods of absenteeism that goes along with training and competing at that level) Gavin is asking his friends for a few dollars.  Thankfully, his brother is technologically advanced and set him up with a website that is easy and secure for donations...not to mention tax deductable for all of you big spenders.
In all seriousness, Gav could use any amount of help from you or your team.    All you have to do is click on the link (I copied it twice for emphasis...something I picked up in marketing class).

Hello all,

The Jacksonville Rowing Club is currently looking for coaching help for their Juniors program.  For the fall season, we are looking for help at any capacity.  We need coaches for womens novice, mens varsity and novice, and womens varsity.  Stipends are negotiable.  We are also looking to hire coaches for the spring season.  This team is growing very fast and huge fundraising efforts are under away.  It is a great time to get involved!

Feel free to email with any questions.  You can also call the Youth Director, Barbara Sanchez-Salazar, at (904) 398-6171 or me at the number below.  Also, please pass this email on if you know someone who may be interested.

FSRA Coaches and Contacts:

The Orlando Area Rowing Society, located on beautiful Lake Down in
Orlando, is seeking applications for assistant coaching positions
within the Junior Competitive Team for the upcoming 2007-2008 season.
Looking to expand its coaching staff to one of the largest in the
south for juniors, OARS is also adding to its inventory of equipment,
boats and infrastructure for its 100+ athletes. Entering its
eighteenth year of competition, we offer qualified coaching
candidates an opportunity to be part of advancing the program from a
well respected local club to a junior rowing team of national
prominence that is focused on participation with excellence.

Ideal candidates will have a college degree, college rowing
experience, and previous coaching experience. However, we will also
consider an applicant for an entry level coach. The position could be
a great leadership opportunity for a recent college grad to teach
younger rowers the finer rowing skills they have developed in a
college crew program. O.A.R.S. is committed to providing a variety of
opportunities for its coaches, including coach training,
conferences, "ride alongs", certifications, and implementation of
sound scientific training principles. The club is also committed to
providing very competitive salaries.

It is important to the club to find coaches that possess:

- a professional dedication for athletic development/expertise in
coaching
- an excellent personal character and commitment to program
organization
- organizational and motivational skills
- abilities in interpersonal communication and community relations
- demonstrated ability to work with students, staff, administration
and parents
- the belief in setting high expectations for themselves and their
student athletes
- a positive "Can Do" attitude and good sense of humor and enthusiasm
- an ability to model life-long learning skills.

For more information about O.A.R.S., visit our website
http://www.oars-online.com. Applicants should send letters of
interest and resumes including previous rowing and/or coaching
experience to Lisa Kelley - lak6@.... Feel free to forward
a this post to any other interested parties.

Coach Bancheri Kicks Off Fall Season with Free Teleclass for Rowing Coaches

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007 @ 8:00pm(EST) - Head Coach John Bancheri of Grand Valley State University will share his secrets to coaching technique in a free teleclass for rowing coaches.  Regardless of your squad's age and experience level, you won't want to miss Coach Bancheri's insight into how the stroke is broken down into basics and spread out over the seasonal plan.  You will take away tips for planning and organizing your approach to teaching and reinforcing fundamental technique, and also learn a variety of physical cues and phrases to clarify the "perfect" stroke to your athletes.

Best of luck on the water this season,

A new, free service provided by coaches, for coaches.  There is no charge to participate, and no catch.  We simply saw a need and interest in our region for coaches to communicate more with each other, to coach and teach other coaches, especially those newer to the sport.

To share ideas and knowledge that make us all better coaches, the Tuesday Teleclass is an interview and/or Q & A session with experienced coaches for new perspectives on old and new topics.  If you are interested in ongoing coaching education, either in developing your own or in mentoring others through your experience...we look forward to having you join in on one of the Teleclass calls.

Due to the team's low member count (6) we will be selling 1/2 our fleet.  We will be selling a HW Jennings 8+ fit for rowers 160+ lbs.  One HW 4+ (bow coxed), also for rowers 160+ lbs; and one LW 4+ (bow coxed) fit for rower averaging below 160 lbs.

All the boats are 2003 models.  They were purchased by a previous coach that expected the team to increase in size.  Unfortunatly the team never did and the boats were only used for one semester.  We are currently asking for $8,000 for the 8+, and $3,500 for each 4+.

Thanks,

As most of you know this will be the first year offering a youth pair event at states.  Maclay is very excited about this opportunity and would like to thank the support of the Florida teams.

I would like to take this opportunity and ask for any teams that might rise to the challange to contact me so we might be able to race eachother prior to states in some head races and/or some sprints.  Several Florida regattas have offered to add a pair event to their race and it would definatly help the event me competative if we began racing eachother early.  Currently First Coast and Gator Head have offered to add a pair event.  If you are interested in racing your pair agains ours you will find us in both.  We will also be racing at the hooch in the open pair.

Thanks to all,
     Yuval Peress
