Hey Brice!
I just got a call from Justin Lednar who just moved to Orlando and is looking for a coaching job. He comes well recommend from the Massachusetts area and would really want to find a coaching/teaching job. He heard Bishop Moore is hiring but he has not heard back. I was wondering if you (or if you can tell me who) can post his contact information on the FRSA email thing. I know some other high schools are looking for coaches. Let me know if you can do that. Brice, would you please send out an email regarding Hood Cup...

We are looking to accommodate a wide range of teams, from the south and up north. Would anyone oppose the moving of Hood Cup to March 25, instead of the 18th, which coincides with the end of Orange County spring break. The other alternative would be April 8, which is the same day as the Miami Regatta and Gainesville Crew Classic. What would be best for most of the Florida Crews to attend? The regatta will be back to no doubling, testing the competition for the upcoming states regatta.

Any concerns or suggestions would be appreciated...

The FSRA Annual Coaches Meeting is scheduled for Saturday, August 6, 2005, from noon to approximately 4 pm.  It will be held at the Boone High School cafeteria.  Boone High School is located at 2000 S. Mills Avenue, Orlando, FL. Directions will be sent during the first week of August.

No By-Law changes have been submitted so far from the general membership. The deadline for submitting changes to the FSRA Corresponding Secretary is July 22, 2005. The board is still reviewing possible changes to Article II - Membership, Section 1. Association Membership.

Concerning limiting doubling at Youth Champs, the general consensus of the board is those who compete in a designated championship event will be allowed to race in one additional event only. The question most likely to be presented to membership for vote is to choose from one of the following options:
1) restricted to any 2 championship events only - this allows sweep rowers and scullers to do 2 events in their chosen discipline or one each.
2) restricted to 1 sweep and 1 sculling event - this encourages growth of sculling events and allows scullers the possibility to race in non-champ events to reduce the number of total races on one day.
3) restricted to 1 champ sweep and 1 sculling event - variation of option 2 above - please note all sculling events are championship events (singles, doubles and quads)
4) no doubling at all - eliminates scheduling conflicts.

Please note that the Scholastic Championships have been following option 2 as the only exception allowed to a no doubling rule.

Last, concerning ethics and use of prohibited foreign substances will be an advisory item only at this point. Two teams were suspected of violating USRowing rule 3-107 at state championships this past spring. Unfortunately, the USRowing Officials at these regattas were not equipped or prepared to enforce this rule, so the matter was taken under advisement with the goal to enforce this rule at future state championships.

Concerning the attached Spring 2006 schedule, only 2 regatta dates have changed so far (Metro Cup - Winter Park / Edgewater Dual moved to March 4; Gainesville Crew Classic moved to April 8). Hood Cup sent an email looking to change.

Enjoy your last month of freedom before school starts up again!

Thanks,

Brice A. Crossley

I have updated the spring regatta schedule page and contact lists. Please continue to email updates especially dual and tri meets.

Per our resolution to combine Scholastic and Youth Champs, I have put together a rough outline of a schedule base on entries from this past season. In the attachment, you will see I used the same start times as the Youth Champs (7 am meetings and 8 am first race). Using tight 6-minute centers and one hour lunch break, racing should be complete by 4:30 pm. I calculated 45 heats and 30 finals for a total of 75 races. Unless someone finds a serious flaw, this is the model we will use to plan for the 2006 state champs. Comments?

It seems to me that since the group at the coaches meeting earlier this month based the "resolution" to combine the Scholastic and Youth Championships largely on an interest in "making everyone faster", there would no longer be a need for heats in the JV 4 and 3rd 4 at the Championship regatta.  Aren't these particular events only going to be entered by very large programs that have already filled all of the 8's events and need somewhere to race their younger guys?  Programs that used to enter V4, JV 4, 3rd 4, etc. without any 8's will now put their top athletes in the V8 - to "make everyone faster", won't they?

I was of the understanding that the distance would still be as close to 2,000 meters as the course could be set.  Is this an error on my part or has there been a change?

I have difficulty with the idea of petit finals for non-championship events.  They merely crowd the schedule and take up space where perhaps better use could be made of the available time.

Were these two regattas really combined to make "everyone faster" as Dan states in his response? Sorry, the logic escapes me, but more to the point if I understand Dan's letter, I don't believe there is going to be any change in the large programs' philosophy regarding entering specific events.  A great deal of "pot collecting" mentality governs event subscription.  It is fairly clear that the V 4+ events are soft due to the talent drain created by the eights with the exception of the few crews who go for broke and enter their best athletes in both as permitted by the "championship event exception" to the doubling prohibition.

We will only have a true state championship when we limit ourselves to championship events only with the entries being unlimited by doubling prohibitions, and permitting fair spacing between events to permit strong athletes who are capable of competing in more than one event to do so and thus demonstrate their skills and prowess.

As a point of clarification... It was decided (and voted upon) that the race would be 1500m and would follow the "scholastic" rules... i.e. NO DOUBLING, except between sculling and sweep.  THIS RACE IS NOT DESIGNED TO HAVE ANY IMPLICATION OTHER THAN A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP...NO USROWING SIMILARITIES ARE INTENDED. This eliminates the need to set a schedule around that.  I do however agree with Brice in trying to space out Men's and Women's sculling events (if doing so doesn't damage the overall race schedule) to allow for equipment sharing.

Brice- With the clubs participating in the Scholastic Championships, how are
points going to be determined for the scholastic teams if there is no petite
final for the event? Are they going to use the heat times? I know that
University School has no chance at an All-Points, but I do like to see where
we fall in the mix of things as we improve.
Quite honestly, if we wanted to make a "better, faster" regatta, we should
eliminate events, and offer more chances to make the final in the
majors...akin to most championships. Heats-Reps-Semis etc. Then teams
would have to be fast consistently throughout the day, and the smaller
schools could measure themselves amongst each other even if it were in a
petite or 3rd final. I know this is hard to comprehend for some of the
traditional powers and larger clubs, but it's tough to build tradition in
the varsity 8+ when you only face the top teams in the state. If you look
back at the entries to the V8 over the past 10 years the same schools show
up with the exception of some commendable coaches in the smaller schools.
Now, with the addition of 6 clubs at the race, how many small schools are
going to show up? Just wondering, since we are supposedly looking out for
the entire state of Florida.
Honestly, I feel like there was little thought put into an extremely
sensitive issue on the pretense that it will benefit the state of Florida
rowing. I have a very difficult time believing that because there will be
slightly more competition at one race...at the end of the year, that we are
going to be faster. In fact, I think that over the past few years coaches
have realized that the true limitation to speed has been these drawn-out one
race regattas that take 3 days of training away from our kids. The
increase in duals and tris and the increased base of knowledge that the
coaches have are going to make boats faster. Training makes boats fast, not
regattas. Regattas measure how fast you are. If it were the other way
around, we would train one day and race 6.
What the Scholastic Championships was attempting to do was allow our high
schools an opportunity to bring back a state championship, like all of our
other teams at school can. I know that they still can, but it's hard to
explain that you came in 2nd but still won. I don't think that is so
reprehensible, as it was made out to be. I don't see the big schools
ducking out of competition anywhere else like it was implied. If the big
clubs want a true test at the end of the year, cut back on some of the
traveling and set up an invitational with the top three winners at
Scholastics invited to the Club Clobbering (I just made that up). That way
the clubs don't feel cheated, they can say they beat the best before they
head up to Cincy, and we can maintain a semblance of tradition.
Just my two cents.
Thanks,
Dan

Thanks,
Dan

Dan Kempinger

Dan: There are numerous points raised in your letter, but I will limit this observation to one, the issue of "it's hard to explain that you came in 2nd but still won".  I have heard this raised for years and might point out by way of example that if a high school entry places below first in a Youth event at the Head of the Charles but is the top high school finisher, that crew receives the Top High School Medal.  I have never heard anyone complain that that was difficult to explain.

To all coaches and other interested persons:  FSRA's letter includes the subject of web updates so it seems fitting to point out that Osprey Oars' web site has been omitted from the contact list information.  Therefore, for those of you who would like to view it from time to time, since we make an effort to include many other crews in our photo gallery throughout the season, it is www.ospreyoars.com.  Mark it down somewhere for your convenience or ask FSRA to correct this oversight.  I will remind you periodically, especially when your crews are mentioned in our regatta reports or photo gallery.  We try to make it appealing to all the crews of Florida knowing that it is viewed by many outside the State of Florida.

Subject: Ospreyoars website clarification
Brice.Crossley-1@...

To all a clarification:

FSRA is no longer providing a link to Osprey Oars web site due to the fact it also uses the SarasotaScullers.com web site and both sites claim Osprey Oars to be the continuation of a former Sarasota Scullers program. As most FSRA members know, Sarasota Scullers is still an active and viable rowing program and has had to start a new www.SarasotaScullers.org web site due to Peter DeManio not releasing the original SarasotaScullers.com web site to SSYRP when he left that team in 2003. We felt that Peter's 2 sites are antagonistic and misleading to youth rowing in Sarasota and therefore it was best not to provide any links until the negative impacts to SSYRP are corrected.

Thanks,

Brice A. Crossley

Subject: RE: [FSRA] web updates and sample schedule

To all coaches and other interested persons:  FSRA's letter includes the subject of web updates so it seems fitting to point out that Osprey Oars' web site has been omitted from the contact list information.  Therefore, for those of you who would like to view it from time to time, since we make an effort to include many other crews in our photo gallery throughout the season, it is ospreyoars.com.

Looking at the FSRA Youth Trophy page (http://youth.floridarowing.org/), we need a sponsor of the Youth Boy's JV 8 event to help even out the number of trophies. This is a $300 donation requested event.
