Subject: Proposed schedule change for First Coast

Brice,

We have been asked by some Florida Crews to consider moving the First Coast
Head Race from its traditional date, the last Saturday in October (October
29th this year) to the weekend before the Head of the Charles, traditionally

the next to the last Saturday in October.

Our proposed date, October 15, would would allow First Coast to be a
tune up for the Charles, as well as provide crews the opportunity to attend
both First Coast and the Head of the Schuylkill.

The new date (Oct. 15) would conflict with the Head of the Cape Fear in NC
and the new Head of the Lanier in GA. as well Hobbs Island (AL). In
Florida the Head of the Indian Creek occurs the same weekend but on Sunday
the 16th.

Please ask the FSRA the FIRA membership to send me their reactions to this
proposed change.

We must move quickly in order to take care of US Coast Guard permitting
deadlines and calendar corrections if we change the date.

Thanks!

Steve Hitchcock

Brice,

Could you please get the word out to FSRA, FIRA and Masters programs that
the 17th Annual First Coast Head Race will be held this year on Saturday,
October 15.

It has moved from its traditional date on the last weekend in October.

The request for feedback from FSRA/FIRA coaches about this change was
supportive.

The move was suggested by a number of Florida programs and will allow us to
avoid the Florida/Georga weekend. We are pleased that the move will also
allow crews the opportunity to utilize it as a tune up for the Head of the
Charles.

The First Coast LOC recognizes this change will be a burden on some
programs and appreciates all the support!

Thanks Brice,
Steve H.

I have wrongly assumed all regattas will keep the same dates for next spring. Please take a look at this first draft of a 2006 spring regatta schedule and send me your changes. I dropped the duel / tri meets from this year. When you figure out those, let me know and I will add them back in. Also, I dropped the Florida Junior testing dates, which I will add in when the info becomes available.  Please note Easter Weekend has moved to April 16.

We are looking to accommodate a wide range of teams, from the south and up north. Would anyone oppose the moving of Hood Cup to March 25, instead of the 18th, which coincides with the end of Orange County spring break. The other alternative would be April 8, which is the same day as the Miami Regatta and Gainesville Crew Classic. What would be best for most of the Florida Crews to attend? The regatta will be back to no doubling, testing the competition for the upcoming states regatta.

Any concerns or suggestions would be appreciated...

The FSRA Annual Coaches Meeting is scheduled for Saturday, August 6, 2005, from noon to approximately 4 pm.  It will be held at the Boone High School cafeteria.  Boone High School is located at 2000 S. Mills Avenue, Orlando, FL. Directions will be sent during the first week of August.

No By-Law changes have been submitted so far from the general membership. The deadline for submitting changes to the FSRA Corresponding Secretary is July 22, 2005. The board is still reviewing possible changes to Article II - Membership, Section 1. Association Membership.

Concerning limiting doubling at Youth Champs, the general consensus of the board is those who compete in a designated championship event will be allowed to race in one additional event only. The question most likely to be presented to membership for vote is to choose from one of the following options:
1) restricted to any 2 championship events only - this allows sweep rowers and scullers to do 2 events in their chosen discipline or one each.
2) restricted to 1 sweep and 1 sculling event - this encourages growth of sculling events and allows scullers the possibility to race in non-champ events to reduce the number of total races on one day.
3) restricted to 1 champ sweep and 1 sculling event - variation of option 2 above - please note all sculling events are championship events (singles, doubles and quads)
4) no doubling at all - eliminates scheduling conflicts.

Please note that the Scholastic Championships have been following option 2 as the only exception allowed to a no doubling rule.

Last, concerning ethics and use of prohibited foreign substances will be an advisory item only at this point. Two teams were suspected of violating USRowing rule 3-107 at state championships this past spring. Unfortunately, the USRowing Officials at these regattas were not equipped or prepared to enforce this rule, so the matter was taken under advisement with the goal to enforce this rule at future state championships.

Concerning the attached Spring 2006 schedule, only 2 regatta dates have changed so far (Metro Cup - Winter Park / Edgewater Dual moved to March 4; Gainesville Crew Classic moved to April 8). Hood Cup sent an email looking to change.

Enjoy your last month of freedom before school starts up again!

Thanks,

Brice A. Crossley
