Just so you don't get confused, the Head of the Chattahoochee Regatta (Nov. 5-6) will now be raced on the Tennessee River in Chattanooga, TN, instead of on the Chattahoochee River in Georgia as it has been for the first 24 years. There is no name change since the Chattanooga Head Race (Oct. 8) and Head of the Tennessee (Oct. 22) regatta names are taken and these event will continue to be raced on the Tennessee River as usual.

Brice -
I am trying to get some local coverage and PR for our Winter Park Mens V8 National Champions - as well as the other FL schools competing on a national level.
Maybe a mention of the statewide interest for youth and Masters rowers will help. Do you have the number of HS and youth programs, and any idea of the number of rowers represented by these programs? Also, does anyone have any data on Masters rowers in the State?
Thanks

Brice:  The Osprey Oars wants to share its pride about Chris Liwski, Riverview '98 and a member of the Original Sarasota Scullers, now Osprey Oars, making the cover of the June issue of Rowing News (Chris is holding the cup).  After graduating from Riverview where he rowed on the State Championship 8+, Chris rowed on a scholarship at Syracuse.  Subsequently he won gold medals in the Nations Cup and the Pan Am games.  He was the alternate on the US Olympic 8+ and has now enjoyed being in the Oxford boat that won the boat race this past March.  We feel it is a matter of pride for all of Florida rowing and feel he is a part of all of Florida rowing.
Please forward this.  Thank you.

Brice:  You can tell teams that are looking for a trailer to Cincinnati that Osprey will probably have a trailer with a professional driver available.  We will know for certain by tomorrow at 5:00 if he is in fact available.  Those interested need to let me know a/s/a/p so that I can negotiate with the driver.  He drove for me all last year and he is highly qualified - the best!

I would be interested in driving a truck to Cincy, since my family's in
Ohio. But I would need to have the expenses divided amongst the teams.
Therefore it would be much better to have a few more boats on there.
Are there any other teams that are looking for a ride from Florida or
along the way?

With the recent completion of our FSRA Championship Regattas, there has been a rush to fill in trophies. To make sure we don't cross lines, the events listed below are available unless indicated with reserved for a pending trophy sponsorship.  Please contact me if you are definitely sponsoring an event so we may reserve it for you.

Again, sponsorship is very simple. For the indicated one-time donation amount, FSRA will purchase a trophy. The sponsor may have the trophy dedicated to a person, place or company if they wish to. FSRA plans to award these trophies annually for at least 10 years before they are retired and trophies are designed and purchased accordingly.

The following are the one-time donations asked for the following available events.

Girls Light 8 - reserved for Leon (Tom Morgan)

I need a representative of the program affiliated with Zina Beck and/or Phyllis K Faboka to reply to this message with the name of your program.  I have a hunch that it is  Westminster, but I need confirmation.
Thanks,

Subject: Title IX is in trouble

Save Title IX

Hi Title IX supporters. Because of your efforts to Save Title IX during the Athletic Commission hearings, we were successful in educating thousands of people about the importance of Title IX.  Those efforts paid off.  The Administration said Title IX was working and made no changes...until now. This time the Administration made changes without any public notice. They didn't ask if you wanted this change. They made no press announcement.  They just put a letter on their website to schools telling them about a "clarification" of the regulations.

This is no clarification!

It's a major policy change to the guidelines that will make it easier for schools to say they are in compliance without providing equality under the law.  We need you to e-mail Congress urging them to have the Department of Education repeal this "clarification."

We need 25,000 e-mails sent by May 21st to get their attention.

Don't let this move by the Department of Education roll back all the gains we've made.  Title IX: Don't Let Our Daughters Grow Up Without It!

Teams attending Youths should have received their parking passes by now.  They went out in Monday's mail.  If you have not yet received your passes make sure you are checking at the address I used (on floridarowing.org).  If you sent me a different address to use, I did.
Each team receives 3 passes to accommodate the limited space at the venue.  Service/food trailers may only enter the parking area between the hours of 6 and 7 am to drop off any supplies and/or food.  Service trailers must be removed from the venue by 7:30 am.  Any crew with a lingering trailer will not be allowed to launch.

Osprey Oars and GAR may be looking for an additional club or two for a new spring 2006 regatta featuring fours and sculling events. If interested please contact Peter deManio at pdemanio@... or Bill Feaster at jwfwilco@....

> >
> >Before I could tell you we'd be able to give your boys any kind of run for their money, I'll need to see what kind of turnout we get for this summer sculling.  If we can get the equipment and the numbers of kids I'd like to see, then I'd be willing to throw in with you for a boys only dual or tri regatta next Spring, featuring 1X, 2X, 4X, and 4+.  We should look around for another club who feels the same way we do - and is doing something about it.  A small regatta like this might be an excellent test for whatever body of water we decide upon for the Crew Classic next April.

 > >In point of fact, we might actually be able to host a small regatta of this type at our facility starting about 8:00 am and ending about 11:00.  There would be some risks of an occasional wake, but we have attempted similar events in the past with Ft. Myers (a scrimmage only) and Stanton (a head race) and they went fairly well.  Although not an adequate explanation for bad conditions, those wakes hit all the boats with about the same effect.  Peter de Manio, Osprey Oars

Boone High School is looking to set up some possible dual and tri races in the spring of next year. I know that it is an early start, but wanted to give everyone a heads up of our wants. If you're interested in setting up something, besides the traditional races of OARS, Hood Cup, Novice regatta, City Champs, and etc, please feel free to contact me.  We are looking for some great racing experience that doesn't last all day.

Due to eligibility issues, all contestants for boy's sculling events (singles, doubles and quads) will be required to present a current photo ID at the dock prior to launching. We will accept school issued photo IDs or government issued photo IDs such as a driver's license. Contestants without ID will not be allowed to race. After the ID check, the approved scullers may then leave their ID with their launch support people and proceed directly to the launch dock. IDs will not be required on the water.

Sorry for the inconvenience this may cause.

Dear Coaches,

(PLEASE BE SURE YOU NOTIFY YOUR VOLUNTEERS OF THEIR DUTIES AND TIMES)

Thank you to all that have submitted the volunteer list.

Remember, ALL OF US are the hosts of this regatta and in order for it to run
smoothly we heavily rely on volunteers.

I have attached two lists of volunteers.

The first list includes registration, finish line, weigh-ins, timing,
scoring, and a list of schools bringing launches and drivers.
I would appreciate it of all morning volunteers could report to registration
by 7:00 a.m. Afternoon timing should report to the docks at 12:30. Launch
drivers will meet at the docks where the launches are beached.

The second list includes stake boat holders. The stake boat holder list has
a great deal of overlap. This is done to ensure that we have at least 6
stake boat holders for each shift throughout the day. The 8:00 am group she
report to registration at 7:30. I would recommend water and sunscreen for
all.

All other stake boat holders should report to registration 15 minutes before
their shift. You will be driven up to the start on the berm in a vehicle
then transferred onto the water by a launch.

Again, thank you all for helping us run this race!

Sincerely,

Tom

Dear all,

PLEASE remember to bring all of the appropriate paperwork to the regatta as
well as your entry fees.

To remind you, you will need:

1)Tampa By-Pass Canal waiver (this is different then the USRowing waiver)

2)EVENT ENTRY FORM DUE AT REGISTRATION for each boat entered.

3)LIGHTWEIGHT WEIGH-IN FORM if you are rowing in lightweight events.

4)CHAMPIONSHIP COXSWAIN WEIGH-IN FORM for the cox's of your champ entries.

5)ATHLETE MEDICAL FORM if you have rowers with medical conditions.

6)COMPETITOR LISTING FORM FOR your entire team.

Registration WILL NOT have copies of these forms for you, you need to bring
them!

At lightweight weigh-ins, the entire crew must weigh-in with a coach and the
coach must have the form.

Coxswains of champ events will be given wrist bands with the weight they
need to carry written on the band. They must keep this on and have their
weight available for inspection by the officials at the end of heats and
finals. No band or weight will result in a DQ.

If you scratch a boat at the coaches meeting you will need to pay a scratch
fee before launching your first shell.

I have attached the Race packet so you can get the forms listed above.

Based on replies from approximately 20 teams

Head/Varsity coaches monthly salary
Volunteers - 4
up to $500 - 1
$501-$750 - 5

$751-$1000 - 6
$1001 and up - 4

Assistants' monthly salary:

Volunteers - 4
up to $250 - 4
$251-$500 - 4

$501-$750 - 1
$751-$1000 - 3

$1001 and up - 2

Notes:

There were lots of variables presented, so I tried to break things down to monthly base salaries. Unless otherwise noted, most replies were based on a 10 month season. Several teams based the starting rate on rowing and coaching experience and then gave annual increases (ranges were given, so I took the mid range value). Some coaches have taken cuts mostly to reduce responsibilities or time spent coaching (we all know crew can take all your available time). Some teams give bonuses based on team performance and improvements. Many prorate part time coaches including only paying for number of days present to coach. There were supplements for extended seasons (going on to national competitions), travel expenses, cell phone allowances, team truck allowances, and health insurance coverage. It should be noted that a couple newer teams basically pay their coaches as full time employees. And some teams rely on their school's salary and coaching supplements as payment.

I hope you found this survey beneficial. And of course there is a follow-up question now being asked. How are teams charging their rowers and coxswains to meet their expenses? Fees vs. funding raising, etc. If I get enough replies, I tabulate those results too.

Thanks,

Brice A. Crossley
