Subject: Head Coach Position for Melbourne High School Crew

Brice,

Would you please forward this ad for a head coach for Mel Hi Crew to the FSRA group.

Thanks,

Karen

Melbourne High School Crew, celebrating 30 years as a high school rowing team this year, is seeking applicants to fill the position of Head Coach for the 2008-09 school year and will also consider applicants for assistant coaching positions. Melbourne High School is located on Florida's Space Coast in Melbourne, FL.

Our season runs from August through May with head races in the fall and multiple sprint events in the Spring. Four weekday practices have historically run from 3:45 to 6:00 pm and a Saturday morning practice from 7:00 till 10:30 am. The team has a shared arrangement to store boats and practice from the Florida Tech rowing facility on the Indian River Lagoon, approximately 3 miles from the school campus.

The Melbourne High School Crew program features varsity and novice teams of boys and girls, which annually consists of 30 to 50 rowers. Melbourne High School sent a Men's 2x (silver medal), a Women's V4 (15th overall) and a Women's JV4 to the Scholastic Nationals in Oak Ridge, TN. The team graduated only four seniors in 2008, one of whom participated at the national competition in the Women's V4.

Coaching duties include scheduling and directing practices, training athletes, scheduling regattas, and determining lineups. Availability at weekend regattas that include 2-3 overnight trips per year is also required. Pluses include skills in boat repair/maintenance/transport, and willingness to assist in team community service activities.

A successful applicant must also complete the Brevard County Public School system's screening process for coaches. Possessing a teaching degree and the ability to obtain a Melbourne High School faculty position is a major plus, but this must be pursued independently with the school.

Melbourne High School Rowing Association is a not-for-profit corporation made up of rowers' parents, who provide administrative, financial, and logistical support to the team and conduct the hiring process in conjunction with the school's Athletic Director.
