Thank you Dan, I know there are many
smaller schools that feel the same way and are behind your ideas. We just need
to get all the smaller schools represented at the meeting so when there is a
vote (perhaps for divisions at the state championship regatta) that it can
pass.

I agree
with Dan that over the years we as an organization have made many changes in an
attempt to make the Championship event better. Some of those changes I
have voted for, and some I have voted against. However, I disagree with his
belief that last year's event was the best ever. The finals in the Varsity
8+ events (which is the sole reason for including clubs into the Scholastic
Championship) were no closer than any other particular year, and the top 3
places in the boys V8+ went to Scholastic teams, as did two of the top three in
the girls V8+. That doesn't support his argument that it was more
competitive as a result of the changes. The fact that there were a larger
number of entries I completely disagree with. We still barely got two
full heats for the varsity 8+s, and we've always had a ton of Varsity 4+
entries. What I did notice was that in those 4+ events clubs took 2 of 3 medals

Having read the ideas put forth by
Brice and Peter regarding our state
championship regatta, I'd like to offer a couple thoughts.
Last year's FSRA State Championship was, in my opinion, the best we've ever
had. The regatta was well-attended, ultracompetitive, and well run. I
remember four years ago having only four varsity eight entries. This year,
there were 11 Women's and 13 Men's Varsity 8+'s. Additionally, there were 15
Women's and 20 Men's V4+s. The day's crowded schedule reflects the
tremendous growth our sport has had over the last 20 years in
Not only was this year's championship a great event, it's been getting
better each year. Over the years, we've tried a lot of different approaches
to organizing our state championship and we've found one that's inclusive
and encourages competitiveness. This year's race format acknowledges that
different communities have found different ways to foster youth rowing and
brings all those programs together for one event. Beyond the benefit to our
state's programs, our championship fits in nicely with important
developments in the Southeast and national rowing scene.
To the extent there were problems or inefficiencies with this year's event,
we should entertain solutions to those problems. It's unncessary to overhal
our race format every year just for the sake of change. Having found a
format that works, we can now look for enhancements that encourage
competitiveness and efficiency.
