To all coaches and other interested persons: FSRA's letter includes the subject of web updates so it seems fitting to point out that Osprey Oars' web site has been omitted from the contact list information. Therefore, for those of you who would like to view it from time to time, since we make an effort to include many other crews in our photo gallery throughout the season, it is www.ospreyoars.com. Mark it down somewhere for your convenience or ask FSRA to correct this oversight. I will remind you periodically, especially when your crews are mentioned in our regatta reports or photo gallery. We try to make it appealing to all the crews of Florida knowing that it is viewed by many outside the State of Florida.

>Brice- With the clubs participating in the Scholastic Championships, how are
>points going to be determined for the scholastic teams if there is no petite
>final for the event? Are they going to use the heat times? I know that
>University School has no chance at an All-Points, but I do like to see where
>we fall in the mix of things as we improve.
>Quite honestly, if we wanted to make a "better, faster" regatta, we should
>eliminate events, and offer more chances to make the final in the
>majors...akin to most championships. Heats-Reps-Semis etc. Then teams
>would have to be fast consistently throughout the day, and the smaller
>schools could measure themselves amongst each other even if it were in a
>petite or 3rd final. I know this is hard to comprehend for some of the
>traditional powers and larger clubs, but it's tough to build tradition in
>the varsity 8+ when you only face the top teams in the state. If you look
>back at the entries to the V8 over the past 10 years the same schools show
>up with the exception of some commendable coaches in the smaller schools.
>Now, with the addition of 6 clubs at the race, how many small schools are
>going to show up? Just wondering, since we are supposedly looking out for
>the entire state of Florida.
>Honestly, I feel like there was little thought put into an extremely
>sensitive issue on the pretense that it will benefit the state of Florida
>rowing. I have a very difficult time believing that because there will be
>slightly more competition at one race...at the end of the year, that we are
>going to be faster. In fact, I think that over the past few years coaches
>have realized that the true limitation to speed has been these drawn-out one
>race regattas that take 3 days of training away from our kids. The
>increase in duals and tris and the increased base of knowledge that the
>coaches have are going to make boats faster. Training makes boats fast, not
>regattas. Regattas measure how fast you are. If it were the other way
>around, we would train one day and race 6.
>What the Scholastic Championships was attempting to do was allow our high
>schools an opportunity to bring back a state championship, like all of our
>other teams at school can. I know that they still can, but it's hard to
>explain that you came in 2nd but still won. I don't think that is so
>reprehensible, as it was made out to be. I don't see the big schools
>ducking out of competition anywhere else like it was implied. If the big
>clubs want a true test at the end of the year, cut back on some of the
>traveling and set up an invitational with the top three winners at
>Scholastics invited to the Club Clobbering (I just made that up). That way
>the clubs don't feel cheated, they can say they beat the best before they
>head up to Cincy, and we can maintain a semblance of tradition.
>Just my two cents.
