Re: [FSRA] web updates and sample schedule

As a point of clarification... It was decided (and voted upon) that the race would be 1500m and would follow the "scholastic" rules... i.e. NO DOUBLING, except between sculling and sweep.  THIS RACE IS NOT DESIGNED TO HAVE ANY IMPLICATION OTHER THAN A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP...NO USROWING SIMILARITIES ARE INTENDED. This eliminates the need to set a schedule around that.  I do however agree with Brice in trying to space out Men's and Women's sculling events (if doing so doesn't damage the overall race schedule) to allow for equipment sharing.

Brice:

I was of the understanding that the distance would still be as close to 2,000 meters as the course could be set.  Is this an error on my part or has there been a change?

I have difficulty with the idea of petit finals for non-championship events.  They merely crowd the schedule and take up space where perhaps better use could be made of the available time.

Were these two regattas really combined to make "everyone faster" as Dan states in his response? Sorry, the logic escapes me, but more to the point if I understand Dan's letter, I don't believe there is going to be any change in the large programs' philosophy regarding entering specific events.  A great deal of "pot collecting" mentality governs event subscription.  It is fairly clear that the V 4+ events are soft due to the talent drain created by the eights with the exception of the few crews who go for broke and enter their best athletes in both as permitted by the "championship event exception" to the doubling prohibition.

We will only have a true state championship when we limit ourselves to championship events only with the entries being unlimited by doubling prohibitions, and permitting fair spacing between events to permit strong athletes who are capable of competing in more than one event to do so and thus demonstrate their skills and prowess.

I have updated the spring regatta schedule page and contact lists. Please continue to email updates especially dual and tri meets.

Per our resolution to combine Scholastic and Youth Champs, I have put together a rough outline of a schedule base on entries from this past season. In the attachment, you will see I used the same start times as the Youth Champs (7 am meetings and 8 am first race). Using tight 6-minute centers and one hour lunch break, racing should be complete by 4:30 pm. I calculated 45 heats and 30 finals for a total of 75 races. Unless someone finds a serious flaw, this is the model we will use to plan for the 2006 state champs. Comments?

Thanks,

Brice A. Crossley
