Subject: [FlyingHairyLegsCyclingGroup] Historical moment: A Chinese cyclist won a race in Europe!

Fuyu Li from the Marco Polo Cycling Team, lasr year golden medalist of the Chinese Games, is the first Chinese cyclist to win a race in Europe. He won the GP Westfalen, a well know semi-classic in Dortmund, Germany.

Halfway the 135 KM race, Marco Polo riders Fuyu Li as well as Yu Tong and Remko Kramer (the young brother of Gudo) made the break in a 17 men front group. Fuyu mentioned he was feeling good, so Yu Tong and Remko Kramer worked hard to keep the break out of reach of the chasing peloton on the fast hilly circuit. Going into the last lap, Fuyu as well as Yu Tong made it in a 6 rider break. On the hill leading to the finish, Fuyu outsprinted the rest of the group with distance, taking this first European victory.
The GP Westfalen has a rich history of over 70 years. In the list of past winners you find famous riders like Erik Zabel, Bradley McGee and Stuart O’Grady. Let’s hope there is also a future like these riders have for Fuyu Li.

Ok , all:  let we discuss this plan.
We plan to spend 2 days on climb uphills in Anji  on June 3th and 4th .
The route:  Saturday , start somewhere from Muganshan, end at the top of the mountain .Totally  120km and  last 18km is absolutely uphill  altitude raise 1000meters.
live in Anji  one night .
Sunday , start from hotel to the mountain top   total 40 km .
How to get there:  If you have car , the best way is use it  . If you have extra seats, somebody else can share the  cost .
Basically , we will use the car of 27bikes  , available for  8 seats +8 bikes . Now 6 seats have been booked.

Detail  will be confirmed after we know who will go and stay just one day or 2 days .
The place and direction map will be sent by our Marcel who will participate a 1 week tour race only on the mountains.

Subject: RE: "Recovery" ride or "low pace long distance" ride?

Yes , JP is right . But , i want to explain something .

This winter, I did more endurance training  from Dec  to the begining of  Apr. When I did the training , it was high average candence 100+ rpm ,low speed about 30 km/h , long distance 120k, 150k . At first , I felt very tired even it was just 80km . But , at the end of  program , it was ok even it was 160km .During the training , just a little bit stength training was done( this should be a mistake ).

From , Apr. to now , I focus on the high intensive training , interval training , stength training ,power training .And , I can feel that I am geting stronger and stronger .At the same time , I feel that I am fresh before the final sprint when we do the normal 90km distance .It is very different with last year and should be the gain of the winter endurance training.

When we did the 150 km last month , I felt  my endurance ability was  much better than last year .

Actually , we have had a very good training schedule  :

Tuesday for 40km team time trial  , you can do high intensive interval training (like Mlss heart rate power output ); Thursday  is a good time for your  power training ( sprint at each bridge, individual time trial ) or strength training ( i did like as:  increase one  level each lap , yesterday morning , my last lap was  53-12  , 80rpm .At last , i  lost the control of my muscle ).

Saturday , we can ride as a race . Sunday can be a race or a endurance training  . Anyway , endurance training should always be a part of your program . The different is you need to   decide how long time should you spend on the endurance training  when you face up different race target.

Because Marcel  should participate a tour race , I think his program is right :endurance + high intensive interval training . Oh, a fantastic tour race for climber . Marcel , do not forget take more red point jerseys for us .

Subject: "Recovery" ride or "low pace long distance" ride?

Dear All,

I am also smiling a bit, like Marcel, when I see "recovery ride"...

A "recovery ride" is not a "low pace long distance". Let me explain:

When you go for a longer than usual ride even at low pace, you work your endurance. This training is very tiring when done in excess, even if you do not feel it directly. You fell confortable during the effort and after the ride (especially if you comparewith a short distance at high intensity) but the tiredness is real. You accumulate this tiredness without noticing and this is the danger. This can lead to slowly become a diesel engine -yes, you are confortable at this specific speed- but you loose you potential to accelerate and to change rhythm. I am afraid Simon is now suffering from too much of this training sessions performed this winter and still now To avoid this trap, the "pro" are including in their endurance winter program a specific work which I can explain once.

Do we need "low pace long distance" endurance training?

YES! If not, you have difficulties with the distance of the race, you do not perform well in the second part of the race or in the last kilometers. Marcel and Chris are going for a "marathon" ride in Europe with several stages (not needing to jump here and there), so endurance training is a must.

Do we need recovery ride (60' to 90' max, 115-130bpm with your most confortable gear)?

Honestly, NO in our case. For two reasons: 1.- Most of us (since James is gone) are resting on Mon, Wed and Fri. More than enough! 2.- We (so far) did not go through real intensive training session leaving us so destroyed the following day that you need to spin your legs to eliminate the toxins.

I said so far.

Cheers, JP.

Sorry, but I don¡¯t care too much about who has which training schedule. I know that I will have a tough week in front of me in Europe and I need some indurance for this. High intensity I can do weekday mornings and I actually do (even though Mark may not believe). Sunday does not work for me for the long ride. So whoever wants to join on Saturday may join. Otherwise I¡¯ll do it alone (also no problem).

Moreover regarding recovery ride I have the impression that only a very few FHL-folks know what that is, but most likely I am only totally out of shape. Therefore for recovery I may have to join the B group or even do it on my own.

Cheers

Marcel

Tuesday for our team time trial  . Thursday for individual time trial  or power training  or strength training..

Mark,

actually I was more thinking about increasing the intensity and not increasing the training duration at this time of the season.
Although Di Shui Lake is an absolutely great ride.
Can we do it like this:        Sa. intensive (short) intervals, normal distance
                                Su. relaxed long recovery ride.

The other way around is also fine if it suits you or the others better.
Of course it will top off the intensity a bit on the following day.

Just let me know the plan so I can bring sufficient energy supplies, other than that I'm quite flexible.

Cheers

Marcel

Totally agree with Herman's idea .

On sat , we can do some intensive interval training  . Sunday for  a long distance indurance training .

Tuesday for our team time trial  . Thursday for individual time trial  or power training  or strength training..

I¡¯m Ok with proposal below.

We will discuss on Saturday so everyone knows plan and then on Sunday, folks can turn around at drink stand or continue for longer ride at recovery pace.

Mark,

actually I was more thinking about increasing the intensity and not increasing the training duration at this time of the season.

Looks like a nice weekend for riding.
Any thoughts about a longer ride either sat or sun?
back to Di Shui Lake???

Riding music .

IBM ad song found-I'm not like everybody else .

I'm Not Like Everybody Else

I won't take all that they hand me down,
And make out a smile, though I wear a frown,
And I won't take it all lying down,
'Cause once I get started I go to town.

'Cause I'm not like everybody else,
I'm not like everybody else,
I'm not like everybody else,
I'm not like everybody else.

And I don't want to ball about like everybody else,
And I don't want to live my life like everybody else,
And I won't say that I feel fine like everybody else,
'Cause I'm not like everybody else,
I'm not like everybody else.

But darling, you know that I love you true,
Do anything that you want me to,
Confess all my sins like you want me to,
There's one thing that I will say to you,
I'm not like everybody else,
I'm not like everybody else.

I'm not like everybody else,
I'm not like everybody else
And I don't want to ball about like everybody else,
And I don't want to live my life like everybody else,
And I won't say that I feel fine like everybody else,
'Cause I'm not like everybody else,
I'm not like everybody else.

Like everybody else,
Like everybody else,
Like everybody else,
Like everybody else.

If you all want me to settle down,
Slow up and stop all my running 'round,
Do everything like you want me to,
There's one thing that I will say to you,
I'm not like everybody else,
I'm not like everybody else.

I'm not like everybody else,
I'm not like everybody else.
And I don't want to ball about like everybody else,
And I don't want to live my life like everybody else,
And I won't say that I feel fine like everybody else,

Hi All,
I have a old lite-speed titanium road bike, that I brought over to Shanghai in 2003.  I now planning to go back to Singapore.  The size is an average ( I am 1.77m tall)

friends-

the 2006 FHL racing kit is almost ready. you can review the designs
by navigating through FHL "Photos" on the side bar of the screen.

the cost will be around RMB300 for each jersey, and around RMB300
for the bib shorts.  (NOTE: these costs already take into account
some sponsorship money, which has already lowered the cost.
depending on the total order number, the final costs may be even
less.)

if you would like to order jersey/bib shorts, pls do the following:

1
CONTACT ME directly by email (cchoa@...).
2
please let me know HOW MANY jerseys and how many bibshorts you want
to order.
3
please INDICATE THE SIZE you want to order.  as a size reference and
for those of you who know me, i will order a size "M" jersey and
size "L" short.
4
please send me your message in ENGLISH OR PINYIN. (i cannot read
chinese - sorry!)

(NOTE: if your name is "JP" and would like to change the name of the
club, please order double the amount that you normally would.)

once we have received the shipment, we will send out another group
message.  we will try to distribute the jerseys a single central
locations (for example Blue Frog on Tongren Lu/Puxi).

Patrick, I recommend you change the words "not-so-fast" to "moderate
paced". Most of our "moderately paced" riders are the B racers,
which actually have a pretty good speed. Perhaps the "not so fast"
indicates something slower, which will lead to an even slower group
and the need to start a "D" group. There are other bicycling groups
in SH to cater to their needs.

Just my thoughts.

Having a second group is a good idea as slower riders like myself get
dropped all too quickly after we have reached the maglev station (just
a little thanks to those who in the past had the patiance to wait for
me when I had one of my numerous punctures) Meeting earlier at Maglev
is always an option but finding the maglev station from the ferry is a
little difficult. Is their any chance of putting a little map on this
web page. I got terribly lost at Pudong airport last Saturday as I was
riding on my own. I have yet to find the drinks stand that everybody
talks about. Actually found myself at departures where I decided that
a mixture of buses, taxis and bikes can give you a real kick when the
pass you with 60-70 mph.

Very much looking forward to Saturday!

Yes.  The slower group leaves Maglev at 7am and the faster group will leave Maglev around 7:20.  So, we should catch you around the big bridge on Long Dong Ave (before the A30).

Yes, we’ll wave hi.  Maybe even draft you for awhile to catch our breath J.

Let’s identify the co-leaders and then I’ll update the FHL website for next weekend’s rides.

Mark,

It will be good to have backups :-)

I'll lead the slower-group this Saturday and to see if there's anybody willing to lead.

Slower-group should always start 15 minutes ahead, right? Don't forget to say hi if you faster guys catches up.

Fantastic.  Thanks.

Will you be so kind as to talk to some of the other riders in the slower-group and get 1-2 others to volunteer as co-leaders.  It would be good to have backup due to travel, etc and one of the co-leaders needs to be there for every ride.

Having a formal slower-group will help to further develop FHL rides.  Thanks again.

Thanks for the offer.

Based on Herman’s response, it does not work to have him lead the slower-group.  He increases his speed as soon as the fast-group catches him.

Would you and 1-2 other riders from the slower-group be willing to volunteer to officially lead this group?  It would be good if FHL can announce 2 groups and let people know that if they show-up for the slower group that there will actually be someone to lead them and to ride with.

Herman and all-

Are you and Anne willing to ride to Maglev and meet with all other slower-riders and lead them from Mag-lev departing at 7am or so???  Or someone needs to lead them from Mag-lev to join you as they pass Tomson at 0715.  And it means Puxi slower-riders need to take an earlier ferry then the fast-riders if they want to meet you at Mag-lev at 7am. I think this is a challenge.  And, this will be even more challenging once we change start time from 0630 to 0600 for the summer for the Puxi fast-riders.

If you want to lead, then we could officially form a slower-group with you as leader

If not, then you are not really non-official B group.  You are more like “2 lone riders with your own warm-up program” J.  And then, we still need to find someone to lead the slower-group to make it official and regular.

Actually Anne and I are the non official B group!
We always leave from Tomson Main Gate (German Center) at 7.15 am, approximately the same time as the A group leaves from Magalev. This gives us a 5+ minutes handicap and allows us to slowly warm up on Long Dong (very important for elderly people).
HR below TH (threshold) -35.
Along the Express way we then ride an extensive endurance pace (TH -30 to TH-20) for thorough warming up with a subsequent recovery between express way and sea shore.
By doing so we are more than ready to follow the intensive A group pace when they catch us.
Now you know the secret.

Conclusion, during the part until the sea shore everybody (all normal healthy people with a bit of cycling km in the legs) should be able to follow.
They can either continue along the sea shore to the drink stand or turn north and go back for shorter distance.

Herman

Dear Marcel,

I agree with you but to the best of my knowledge, FHL does not have a group B as such yet! I have NOTHING against a group B, but this is simply not yet existing.

So either we do not mention it because it is not yet in place or we officially create a group B (for example starting from Maglew 15' earlier -so we can join and chat at the drink stop- the leaders stopping for example at the end of LongDong and at the end of the express way to wait for the latest and regroup before resuming in peloton).

Cheers, JP.

JP,

I agree with you that competitive Cycling is the goal. To make this clear in the listing is also OK. I am only of the opinion that there should be a chance for newcomers to get started. That¡¯s all.  And in fact that seems to be the case since there are already very many riders with a broad range of capabilities.

Mark,

Thanks for having sympathy for the fat slow guys like myself.  On the times I have been out for a ride, I get dropped by the group pretty quickly.  I am usually am able to find another rider along the way that has been able to help out with the route.

It seems that on the way home there has always a group of slower riders to come back with so that's quite nice.

25-30 seems like a good suggestion for the slow group as it seems more inviting for the slower riders than 28 to 34.

Regards,
Josh

I'm ok to reduce speed on the slower group but not the faster¡ª  well maybe a little reduction would be OK.  We have had a string of new riders join us that get dropped 5km after the maglev and we never see them again.  I feel bad for them.  I think we need to let people know that FHL-fast group is a serious road-ride group.  The issue becomes, we need to have someone lead the slower group so new riders know who they should be following.   Just my opinion.  Let's see what others think.

Mark,

We all know that your recovery speed is around 34 kph but don't scare the people away with this information. Fast group should be 30-40 (so recovery for us younger riders is also possible) and the slow one should be 25-30.

Cheers
Marcel

Patrick-

Great idea to list FHL on CityWeekend.  Thanks for taking the initiative.

I do not want my mobile phone or e-mail to be listed.  I would prefer they access the web-site and join the club.  But if others want to be listed as contact-- e-mail or mobile, that would be great.   Any takers for this role???

CityWeekend would like to list FHL in their magazine (biweekly).
There are several bike clubs listed already:  Shanghai Bike Club
(Bohdi), SISU Cycling Group, Wolf's Mountain Bike Club.

Here is some draft text - comments welcome; most important is correct
contact info - Mark and Kaiyuan, are you guys OK as primary contacts?
Can we list an email contact too?
