FCRowing - Learn to Row June 25-6!   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #41 of 367 |

Our boats are here! And the FCRA is launching its first Learn To Row Clinic
next weekend, June 25-6. Please enjoy a land based learning session and two
on the water rows, with instruction. We will meet at Horsetooth Reservoir at
the Northernmost boat launch which is located on the west side of the north
dam, near Satanka Trail. The costs - $100, which may be applied toward a 2005
membership when you choose to continue rowing.

We will combine on-land instruction about some rowing basics, safety, and
terminology with on the water clinics for first time beginners on both
Saturday and Sunday morning with sessions beginning at both 6:30 AM and 7:30
AM. Hint - an early start is more peaceful on the weekends.
Howard or I will be posting answers to all questions on the
FCRowing@yahoogroups.com site with details. You might wish to visit an FAQ
site for rowing for answers to some of your questions, like what to wear,
and then give us a

As a safety precaution, you must be able to tread water (without a life
preserver) for 15 minutes. In addition, wearing a typical life preserver is
an option at first, but not really conducive to rowing well. As you will
learn, it is highly unlikely that you will end up swimming at this stage,
and the shell can be swamped, but will not sink.

We will likely repeat the clinic over the first and second weeks in
July. That should be enough to let you know that this is the sport for you,
for life. After two rows, you really will not be ready for the racing
shells, but you may be comfortable enough to take a row, and possibly flip,
in recreational single. Then, for those beginners who will want to handle a
single recreational rowing shell on their own or to be an asset in team
boats with other novices, we will probably be able to provide some further
instruction for a reasonable price of $25 per boat/ per coaching hour.
Receiving individual instruction while rowing with a coach in a double might
be the the most rapid learning method, but we all learn and progress
differently. We would like to be able to approve you to row independently
and safely as soon as possible.

Our half marathon race, the Horsetooth Ache is the first or second weekend
in November. Put it on your wish list.

Thanks for your interest. I look forward to seeing your first row.
