Hello,
One more successful weekend is in the books for Team Phils Tire
Service! This event was the seventh championship round of the Mid
Atlantic Road Racing Series. I would be competing behind the wheel of
my ITA prepared Honda CRX Si. The format for this weekend was a
little different but included a lot more seat time. The labor day
weekend of the MARRS series is always an event that numerous drivers
mark on their calendars.
Saturday would consist of two qualifying sessions, but for this
weekend, the first session would determine the starting position for
Sunday's race while the second timed qualifying session would
determine the starting position for Monday's race. The weather was
beautiful for the weekend with sunny skies and temps in the mid 80's.
The first qualifying session had me gridded in third position. We
took to the track and I was able to get in numerous clean laps as the
session continued. I used this time to also scrub in a set of brand
new Hankook racing tires that I had Phil mount up for me at the
previous event. After the session was all set and done, I was able to
capture the pole for ITA with a fast lap of 1:27.1 which was also
faster than my existing track record. Overall for Sunday's race, I
would be gridded in fourth position.
For the second qualifying session on Saturday, the session was
extremely short. I took to the track with two ITR BMW's and an ITS
Acura Integra GSR in front of me. We made our way around the track on
the first lap to allow our tires to come up to operating temp. We
then started our first hot lap of the session. I was able to stay
with the GSR for that first lap and as we came into the braking zone
at T1, one of the ITR BMW's blew an engine spewing oil all over the
track! I took it easy going into T1/T2 and coasted into the pits.
That first hot lap that I completed was pretty good and after the
track was oiled down, I knew it wasn't going to get any faster. Even
though it was only one lap, I clicked off a 1:27.3 which was again
good enough for pole in ITA and fourth overall for Monday's race.
Sunday's race had me gridded in fourth, but because one of the front
running ITR BMW's blew up the day before, I would actually grid in
third overall. As the green flag dropped, I was able to get an OK
start, but the higher horsepower cars behind me were able to get by on
the straight. I was caught behind an ITS Datsun for a lap before I
was able to get by him in the carousel and from there was running my
own race. I knew the car was feeling really good and I was pushing
pretty hard to beat my existing track record yet again. After about
five laps, I was able to get down to a 1:26.8! After that, I put the
car in cruise mode and made sure I kept out of trouble. In the end, I
was victorious in ITA and finished third overall.

I would actually start on the overall pole for Monday's race! The
other front running BMW, driven by Marshall Lytle, unfortunately had
to leave due to a work related issue and the ITS Acura GSR driven by
Steve Hoffman suffered mechanical issues and started from the back of
the pack. I would now be gridded on the front row next to Jon Kofod
in his ITS Acura Integra GSR. As the pace car ducked into the pits, I
set the pace that was beneficial to my CRX's power band and got a
great start. I was able to stay with Jon before entering the brake
zone of T1. I stayed ahead exiting T2 and from there never had to
look back. The track was in worse condition than the day before and,
therefore, wasn't any faster. But I kept my nose clean and in the end
won ITA and overall for the run group!

Another win in the books for Team Phil's Tire Service! An exceptional
weekend for sure. The next event on the calendar is the NASA National
Championships at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in two weeks. I'll be
piloting Phil's PTB Acura Integra GSR and hope for great success at
this event. I've spent some serious man hours on preparing the car
and am confident that it will be a contender for the win!
Until next time, take care!
