Soooo, is there anyone out there who wants to take control of the pickup team
for Winter Thing? And who wants to play? I'll need a confirmation immediately
because the tournament director needs to know by TODAY (which is Tuesday!).
Who's in and let's see if you'll have a team (sorry, I'm playing on another
team, but I'll help to organize you)?

Yes, yes!!! Sean...put together a pickup team! I'm playing with my high school
kids, but I'll help you recruit. I have two VERY good players that may be
interested and I was going to put them on my team....but I want more high school
kids on my team. I'll start sending out the e-mails, if you want me to ...let
me know...

i'll even take the liberty of coaching the team. and by coach i mean drink hot

Hey Guys,
I would be down to play on a pickup team too if someone else gets it
together, I fear responsibility tho. I need to get back in shape, but I
still have a great forehand huck!

I know my son, Eric, is looking for a team too. He was playing with Sprawl
but I'm not sure if they're getting a team together (Marcus? You out there?)
Not sure I can commit to playing much (two days on artificial turf . . .
ouch)

Is there a formal pickup team for Winter Thing? Anybody need bodies?
Ashley and my friend Scott would like to play and are looking for teams.
I think they're really excited about winning the party - the bowling, pizza,
and all-you-

On November 19th, 5 Middle School teams from as far south as Alameda,
CA and as far north as Portland, OR gathered for Turkeybowl 2 in
Eugene, OR. A small single-day round-robin tournament, held action
from the some of the youngest ultimate players in the nation. Many of
these students had never played before, while others were already 2 or
3 year veterans. The highlight reel below is 4min long and is in both
regular mpg format as well as the new apple format for your ipod video
(mp4):
http://www.chsultimate.com/video/Turkeybowl2HL.m4vhttp://www.chsultimate.com/video/Turkeybowl2HL.MPG
Over 350 of you have already seen the Sundodoger HL posted two days
ago online, but if you didn't see that highlight reel from the HS
tournament this last fall with the best action in the northwest, you
should check it out here: chsultimate.com/video.html
The Tournament DVD is coming, but for now, you can wet your appetite
with the Sundodger Highlight Reel. The final 2mins of the 8min
footage is unbias as it looks at the best plays from the top two mixed
teams in the Northwest that both hail from Eugene, OR: Churchill High
School & South Eugene High School.
This tournament happened to be the final match-up between these two
teams and the winner would take top honors not just in Eugene, but the
Northwest and possibly the nation (at least if you go by the UPA RRI
ranking). Following the tournament Churchill ended up the number one
team in the nation with the highest RRI of 3049, with South Eugene the
number three with an RRI of 2981.
If you're curious who the HS players to watch are this coming spring
season, look no further. I may be a bit bias since I'm one of the
coaches, but these two teams are ready to take it to anyone who is
willing to put seven on the line across from them.

I should say a big thanks to Matt Sewell who put this tournament on in
the first place and allowed there to be a highschool division.

All-
I'm wanting to play on a team for Winter Thing in January - anyone
need a guy? I'm a solid B player, know what I'm doing for the most
part, can handle a little if need be, have a good attitude, have
gloves for the cold, and can out jump Enrique by 2 feet (sometimes 3!).
I normally play on Johnny Cash in B-1 and am trying A winter league
for the first time this year.
Let me know.

Subject: UPA Championship Opportunities
Hey folks,
If you?re getting this email it?s b/c you are or have been one of the people out
there helping to organize, promote, and spread Ultimate in your area or around
the country. I?ll try not to get into too much detail, or give you the standard
spiel, b/c you can get that on our website (www.upa.org/host). I just wanted to
let you know that a number of upcoming UPA championship events are up for grabs.
I would be excited to hear from any of you if you and your community are
interested in finding out more about what hosting the College Championships,
High School Westerns, or any of our other events is all about.
There are a few things I definitely think are worth mentioning now.
The events I?m talking about are for 2007. That seems like a long way off, and
it is a good amount of time. But early planning is important when you want to
do something right. That?s why most of the bid deadlines for these events are
coming up at the end of this year. If you are interested and that seems like a
rush job, contact me anyway and we can discuss options. The important thing is
that I can use this coming winter and spring to go visit potential sites and
meet potential organizers. Then we still have enough time to make decisions at
least a year before the 2007 events.
Something else to consider is that there are a lot of local Convention and
Visitors Bureaus and Sports Commissions whose job it is to get people and events
into your town. These folks make great partners b/c they know everyone in town,
from hotel managers to field complex managers. Sometimes a high-profile event
with people coming in from out of town is just want they are looking for, and
it?s sometimes just the kind of thing that can help you and your Ultimate
community build lasting local relationships...relationships you can carry with
you into your summer league or next local tournament. Touch base with those
folks if you are interested in partnering to bring a UPA event to town.
Like I said, most of the other details you can read about on the website. Go to
www.upa.org/host. Lastly I just want to say that in my experience here at the
UPA (and before), some of my most rewarding experiences have come from putting
together top-notch Ultimate tournaments. Meeting and working with new people is
the biggest part of that. But it?s also nice to see the smiles on the faces of
the players, to watch the action unfold, and to get a pat on the back from
players and fellow organizers for a job well done. I?d be psyched to work with
you, or at least talk to you about the possibilities.
So, check out the info at www.upa.org/host and let me know in the next few weeks
if you are interested or have any questions.
Thanks, Will
