Greetings, Eugene discer!
In less than two weeks, this talented, eclectic and downright disc-happy
community we all love will host one of the oldest and most popular Ultimate
tournaments in the Northwest: The Eugene Summer Solstice, June 21-22.
This will be the 30th running of Solstice -- in other words, the tournament is
older than many of the people who play it. More than 400 players -- including
the sport's elite -- will converge from near and far, and together we'll put on
an Ultimate competition not to be missed. The tournament is an important and
colorful thread in the community fabric that makes Eugene, "Eugene."
However, Solstice requires a monumental amount of work. As tournament director,
I've been at it for nine months now. I've had a lot of help -- players have
stepped up for major front-end tasks including the Web site, sponsorships,
dinner, party site and merchandise.
Now we need your help. In fact, the tournament's future hinges on better
volunteer support. I'm almost 40 and haven't played the game in a year; our
tournament board members have young families and careers to manage. We need more
support from everybody, and younger players in particular need to move quickly
into leadership roles, up to and including tournament director for 2009 (we're
accepting applications now).
If you play Ultimate in Eugene-Springfield, think about helping out with
Solstice. It goes without saying -- but I'll say it anyway -- that many hands
make light work. I'll be e-mailing around with jobs to do, but please take the
initiative to send me a quick response now.
Playing Solstice is a blast. Together, we can make running it a snap.
best,
Matt
p.s. I also need to borrow a cell phone for the tournament. Lil' help?
