Hi everybody,
I'mm afraid I'm in Bristol looking after a 99 year old mother with a broken foot, and don't expect to be back home until somewhere around the 23rd August so won't be able to lead the Cairnpapple run.
Is there anyone out there who can take over/do a swap with me. I have planned out a route and have a .gpx file for it if that helps.
Thanks,
Dave.

Subject: CTC Ride Wednesday 3 August to Kinross and Loch Leven

Dear Cyclists

CTC Ride Wednesday 3 August to Kinross and Loch Leven

The ride begins at 10.00am at Roseburn Path

The route is

OUTWARD

Cramond Brig, Dalmeny,Forth Road Bridge West Cycleway, toilet stop at Inverkeithing Park and Ride ,then through Inverkeithing and continue north on Sustrans Route 1, skirting east side of Dunfermline to Townhill, past Town Loch ,  over Cleish Hills to Kinross, lunching  at Kirkgate Park  by Loch Leven.  Distance 28 miles.

HOMEWARD (Vaguely)

After lunch we will stravaig around the Loch Leven Heritage Trail, as far as Findatie, then briefly  east  on B9097 before turning right to B920, taking us to Ballingry and Lochore, then Lochore Meadows Country Park , eastwards, joining B996, then B917 through Kelty,Hill of Beath to Crossgates where we go left to Fordell and then down to Aberdour. COFFEE  STOP in pub as cafes likely closed .Thence follow Kingdom Coastal Trail back to Inverkeithing and return to Edinburgh by morning’s route .  Distance38 miles.

The route takes in some great views of Fife and Kinross, towards Perthshire and up, down and across the Forth.Corollary is that there is quite a lot of climbing (and descending, strangely enough.)

The homeward route can easily be shortened at various points.

I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday morning.

                                 Duncan Ross

The cycle lane up Liberton brae where the road is narrowest always has parked cars, and overtaking traffic comes too close unless they are considerate drivers. Similarly opposite the HBOS at Liberton crossroads, and several other narrow bits beyond where cars parked directly adjacent to traffic islands means significant hazards for cyclists. The way things are in Edinburgh right now I feel much safer in bus lanes, and yes bus drivers are overwhelmingly bike considerate, than so called cycle lanes, where parking is allowed, forcing cyclists too far into the carriageway.

Dear All,

I have noticed that some of my clubmates show pleasure on seeing cereal crops that are badly infested with poppies. To an agriculturist, even if I am well retired, this is unseemly behaviour verging on the offensive. I have also noticed that, more often than not, said clubmates return home at night, having ridden in a circular fashion. Having just read   http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8118257.stm   , my observations are beginning to coalesce into a suspicion, strengthened by blogs from around the world, including Lochgelly

   You are all under observation.

Peter

As an agriculturist and possibly horticulturist you should know the difference, we cyclists are awed by the sight of nodding poppies causing there to be a red bloom in the cornfield, and these are, as you know field poppies, not papaver somniferum or otherwise known as opium poppies...which although indigenous to the UK do not flourish in cornfields to the extent that the poppies pictured do.  Neither can crop circles in this country be blamed on stoned kangas or even roos, as these are most definitely not indigenous to the UK!!

CTC Lothians and Borders and Waverley Squash Club

Remembering Anne Carter

18th September 2011

Anne was everything to everybody. She could have been a much loved sister or daughter. She was caring but practical and efficient, mischievously comical and, the reason that we all knew her, an enthusiastic and accomplished cyclist.

We were lucky to have known her.

The CTC Short Sunday ride  will leave Waverley Tennis and Squash club,

22 Suffolk Road Edinburgh EH16, at the later time of 11:30am.

There will be cups of tea/coffee from 11am.

Liz Farnsworth will lead this run will return around 14:30.

On returning there will be a modest Pizza lunch.

Then there will be a few hours of Squash and/or Tennis –the plan is for doubles at tennis, coaching at squash, all just for fun, format partly depending on who is playing.

At 6.30pm will be an evening meal of Curry and Rice, Veggie and Non Veggie, provided by Waverley. CTC are most welcome to bring cold desserts. I there is a bar.

A donation of £5 towards food is suggested. There will be a donations bucket. To cover any costs with the balance to Ovacome, an Ovarian Cancer support charity with which Anne had links.

The Squash Club would like final CTC numbers  by early evening of Wed 15th Sep.

I think they mainly want numbers for the meal, but rough numbers of squash / Tennis players might be helpful. You are of course welcome for part or all of the day.

Ahoy All,
As sadly I have lost the desire to ride out with the club on Wednesdays and Saturdays which, applies as of now, the immediate requirement is a replacement run leader for next Wednesdays run to Dunsyre. If someone elects to take the run, I would be quite happy to furnish a route if required. If nobody is free to take the run, I would be happy to post a route for the club. I have already informed Neil and Norma so replacement leaders can be found for the remainder of my runs on the lists.

I would offer to lead this one but carried food poisoning of some kind for much of the Semaine and could not keep any sort of pace.  At the Doc's this evening but don't anticipate an improvement.

I've seen no responses to Jimmy's mail - is the run happening?

Audrey's life support machine has been switched off and we have lost a larger than life friend.

Audrey was one of those people you were always pleased to meet, cheerful, generous, forthright, sensible and with a wicked sense of humour. She was one of life's encouragers and "cheerer-uppers" and always led by example. Her uncomplaining determination in overcoming setbacks following her recent hip replacement was typical, as was her thoughtfulness concerning organ donation.

In recent years Audrey claimed she was just grateful that she was still able to do a few miles on her bicycle. In fact she was a prodigious cyclist capable, had she wanted, of leaving many of us in her wake. One of our clubmates reckoned that Audrey had two sets of lungs, one set for cycling and an auxiliary set for chatting and encouraging us as she rode.

We mourn a wonderful companion but our own grief is nothing compared with that of her family, and our deepest sympathy goes to Ian, Aileen, Linda and the rest of the family.

Dear All,

It seems that following a fatal accident a post mortem is mandatory. If that takes place today then Audrey's funeral might be arranged for the end of next week. Audrey's daughters, Aileen and Linda, will let us know as soon as arrangements are confirmed.

Meantime, can those people who are computer/camera literate search their photo libraries for good pictures of Audrey, preferably without dark glasses, and email them to Linda. Do you recall any any funny stories or anecdotes involving Audrey? If so, please let Linda know. Her details are:  linda.hamilton3@... and her 'phone number is 661 2516.

Aileen remembered that her mother wrote a verse or two for Bob Jeffrey's funeral which she thought was printed on the order of service. Does anyone recall this and do they have a copy that they could send to Linda?

Good Afternoon.  My name is Jack McHugh, Glasgow CTC and Caroline Parr, Edinburgh has been keeping me up to date regarding Audrey and I have been letting her many friends in the West know.

Could you possibly pass on the following two messages to her family or show on the Group news.

The first is self-explanatory.  The second is to say that I and my late wife, Theresa, more or less grew up with Audrey, in cycling terms. We all shared experiences at Fife and Lothian social and cycling events. The memories are all good ones and my heart goes out to Ian and the family.
If I may paraphrase a monologue she gave at New Year in New Lanark Y.H. "Heaven will have to lay out a bowl of porridge just for you, Audrey"

Sorry to impose,

Many thanks,

Jack McHugh

Fellow Cyclists
I attach a link here to the article in the Scotsman about Audrey and comments made by Linda about organising a critical mass ride in her memory.

http://edinburghnews.scotsman.com/topstories/If-you39re-coming-to-my.6818057.jp

Some friends of mine in other bike groups are on the money on this one with some good ideas, such as having different meeting places, where small groups of cyclists can come in from all points and converge on say St Andrew's Square, with a ride down George Street (Princes Street would be too dangerous now with the tram lines and problems they cause), round Charlotte Square up Lothian Road, and into the Meadows for an al fresco picnic.  This would also probably be best done on a Saturday with larger numbers of drivers being out and about and inconvenienced to impact on their consciousness and raise their awareness of cyclists, which is the whole idea of the event.  I know that there is a school of thought that we do not want to upset motorists but they really do need to be made aware of the potential lethality of driving too close to us, which does not include actually running over us or even crashing into us.

I am sure that you are all familiar with the idea/ideology of Critical Mass rides, the next one, just incidentally, being Friday evening 26th August in Edinburgh.  If not, the idea is that as many cyclists as possible set off from a given meeting point at a predestined/organised time, to follow a set out route, and when the sheer numbers of bikes effectively close roads or hold up traffic significantly to raise car drivers' awareness of us as fellow road users, who are vulnerable in that like pedestrians we are not shielded by metal and that if hit we can and do die, but unlike pedestrians we are not segregated from traffic in the form of four or more wheeled transport.

My good friend hopes to liaise with Audrey's daughter and unless the CTC are going to, want to or are willing to organise this as fellow members of the club, and friends of the family, then perhaps we could at least count on you joining the ranks of those that wish to protest in this way.  It would be great to think that we might take the lead on this.

Regards and BW
Liz

Ahoy,
Aligned to the W/Fcast this is the route I intend to take tomorrow.

Start  >   H ermiston Village.

Start Time  >  9.30am.

Route.  >  E/Calder to get onto Route 75 to Airdrie >  Kilsyth  >  Carron Bridge  >  Stirling Area  >  Fishcross  >  Coalsnaughton  >  Solsgirth  >  Saline  >  Dunfermline  >  F/Rd/Brdg  >  Hermiston  (or own way home).

If you are considering joining the run, it's long 90 odd mls, and longer for anyone cycling to the start and home. The route as usuall is 'not' absolute and can be subject to change, weather particularly or, poor navigation which, historically tends to add more miles and hills than, subtract them.

Allowing that the wind is not 'fierce' the run out to Airdrie will not be demanding. From Airdrie to the Stirling Area will be 'enjoyable' wind on back?!!. A nice flatish run  along to the 'wee' climb out of Saline and, an easy run to the Bridge and back.

Any doubt ref W/Picture am, call me 466 -  3394.   Attached  gpx File.

Jimmy.

CTC Wednesday Run

17th August 2011

Starting from Slateford Viaduct (next to 'The Dell Inn')   at 10 a.m. we go by the canal path to Baberton Mains, over the level crossing and through the Heriot Watt Campus to Kirk Newton and East Calder. Then through Almondell and north through Broxburn, turning west through Wyndford, West Binny and Mid Tartraven (sounds like a hair dye) to Cairnpapple Hill, where we will have lunch if the weather is kind.(22)miles

From there west, to Westfield, then south through Armadale and Whitburn from where we will take the A706 to Burnhead to turn east to West Calder. Up the hill to Harburn to plunge downhill into Livingston from where, with a bit of luck we may find East Calder and have tea.

Then by Wilkieston and Ratho, Ratho Byres, Roddinglaw, Suntrap and the canal tow path home.( total 60 miles)
