With an estimated 2 day crowd of 75,000+ the Dukes Fest this weekend
was simply huge. I have never seen so many people so interested in
racing mowers in my life. I want to Thank ETLMRA's Rodney Peeler and
Michael for coming with their mowers and MTLMRA's Todd Mobley, Paul
Gordan, Pete Larsen, my son Brandon Herrin, Larry Favors and Jeannie
Riley and Dustin Dickey and Kevin Smith for their efforts and time in
putting on one heck of a show. THE crowd went wild!!!! A special
Thanks to Larry and Jeanie for the General Lee S/S mower. It was a
huge success. It was so huge that the CMT crew on site used it for a
special shoot. Watch the CMT top 20 next weekend for their piece. It
was a huge magnet from the time the crowd come in till they left.
There were huge lines to get their picture taken on the mower and
blow the Dixie horn. It was simply awesome we handed out over 400
info handouts on our sport. Saturday night a 20,000+ crowd stood on
their feet roaring when the General Lee raced his way from the back
to take the lead and win. (The General Always wins). But the crowd
simply went wild. Then after the Super Stock and Prepared 10 lap
races, my self and Rodney Peeler and Michael and Paul hit the 5/8 and
run the back stretch to show waht the prepared were capable of doing.
When the announcer said I hit 84 mph the 20,000 plus crowd again
stood and simply cheered wildy. It was simply something you had to be
there to believe. Then on Sunday myself and family and Larry and
Jeannie with the General and Pete went back and displayed the mowers
to again be swamped by curious and interested people of all ages. A
family came by that Larry knew and hadn't seen in 2 or 3 years, they
have a son that has downs syndrome he's 33 but has had many problems
and the Family had been told he didn't have long to live. His one
wish was to ride in the General Lee. Well the Hazard staff to include
Ben Jones (cooter) were giving rides for a fee of course. Well this
family tried to wait in line which strecthed half way around the 5/8
mile track. and the heat simply got the best of Paul ( their son with
Down Syndrome) and they brought him over to our tent (we had shade)
This is how they stumbled on to Larry. They had got out of line to
get their son cooled off. After sitting and hearing them tell Larry
of this all I got an Idea. I had previuosly met Cooter when setting
this event up and when taking the General mower over to his store
Cooters place for Display leading up to this event. SO I made a phone
call to Chris he was our contact their for this event. I asked him to
come by our tent. I told him what had happened and nothing about him
not living long and asked if he could help. He said he wasn't sure
but he would try. Well to make a long story shorter he came back with
a golf kart and said put him in it. So mom and dad put Paul in and
they all went for a ride. That ride was straight to the head of the
line where Ben Jones(cooter himself met Paul and put him in the
General Lee. They had 4 cars giving rides 1 car was for a single
person and got an extra FAST ride for an extra fee of course
(it was a General with full cage and race engine) Well Paul got his
wish and Ben (cooter) would not take a dime for his ride. You all
should have seen this man/kid with Down Syndrome smile and wave all
the way down the back straight and back. So you see this weekend was
a huge success not only as a promotion for the Mowers but for Paul.
He got his wish, and I/we the Mower Racers made it happen. SO if we
don't gain a single thing from this weekend, Paul did, His wish!!!
