Hello there!
First of all let me introduce myself.
My name is Vera Andrejcenko.
I'm from Macedonia.
Student of Electrical Engineering Faculty.
And I usually do inline skating, not inline figure
skating, cause in my country this is not such a well
known branch of skating.
But I would realy LOVE to start doing some inline
figure skating.
My past experience is participation on two
Roller-skating contests here in Skopje, Macedonia,
which are held once a year.
In winter I can't stand not to go on ice-skating
and during summer I usually do
not separate from my roller skates,
cause they're my passion.

Sincere Greetings!

Hi,

I am a casting producer for ABC's hit show, Wife Swap, and we are
looking for figure skating families to be featured in an upcoming
episode. I used to be a skater and I really am excited about this
episode. I am hoping to find a great outgoing family that has a child
who is competitive in the sport that would want to be on the show. As
a former skater I understand the life of figure skaters and think it
would be a great opportunity for the right family.

Families featured on the show will receive a $20,000 honorarium. If
you refer a family that is selected to appear on the show you receive
$1,000 as a thank you for helping us out.

The premise is that the wives from 2 different households swap places
for a week to experience how another family lives and interacts under
the rules of a new mom. It is very different from the show on FOX,
Trading Spouses, where the wife from one family gets to decide how the
other family spends their money. On our show the family is free to
spend the $20,000 however they would like. I also think our show is
done better, just my personal opinion. It is more documentary- like
and less sensational. The families end up learning a lot and get a great
experience.

Basically we are looking for families anywhere in the United States,
but we ask that families applying for the show consist of two parents
and have at least one child, between the ages of 7 and 17, living at
home. I ask that families submitting to the show email a family photo
and description of everyone and their ages to:
<wifeswapcasting2007@...>
and then we can get an application started.

So, please let me know if you are interested in helping out in any
way, shape, or form. Thanks so much! If you want to check out the
website for more information:
http://abc.go. com/primetime/ wifeswap,
I look forward to working with you in the future.

Judging the Inline Skater
by Jeff Higgins

For you judges out there, or critics who want to compare one
skater to another, here's what to look and listen for when watching
the inline dance skater. For you inline skaters who think they can
continue to get away with sloppy skating, your days are numbered.

Double take-offs or Clunking - Listen for thumping on the floor as
the skater fails to set the direction of the stroke properly for the
intended travel. When the skate is set down incorrectly, the wheels
resist the angle of attack, causing the skate to hop up into the air,
and "clunk" as the full weight of the skater is applied. You may not
hear it, but the skater will know when it happens. It's a like
setting a bowling ball down too hard, causing it to bounce once
before it finds the right direction.

Patterns full of angles instead of lobes - Even if a baseline is
adhered to, watch for angled take-offs, and noticeable struggling to
maintain speed and flow. You'll notice that the pattern appears to
be a series of angled flats instead of circular lobes. Usually the
pattern will seem small for the amount of effort. This is a fairly
severe error and indicates a need to look in the direction of
intended travel and practice doing true edges by following (or
dancing with) quads skaters. (Asking them to practice on a figure
circle is a futile effort, though.)

Pedaling - Ex-Ice skaters will pedal quite a bit more that ex-Quad
skaters. Pedaling is picking up the heel of the free leg before
setting is back down for the next stroke…like pedaling a bicycle.
This is because of fear of the toe-pick catching the ice, causing
unexpected falls. It is also a result of laziness or ignorance.
(i.e. poor coaching). Less pedaling = higher score, all else being
equal.

Progressing - The skater will walk, or step-ahead, instead of
stroking from the parallel-and position. This is the result of
leaning too far forward. To keep from falling, the skater must step
ahead instead of stroking. The fix for this is pushing from the
heel, and skating over the center of the skate instead of the front
wheel. Judges should reward the skater who appears centered over the
skate.

Although evidence of the past is not always indicative of the future,
take a look an the wheels of the skate up close, if you notice uneven
wearing left to right and uneven wearing among wheels, (especially on
the front wheel), the skater has been skating incorrectly for quite
some time. Point this out to coaches if there is any argument
concerning leaning forward and thus progressing. On today's indoor
roll-on floors (even concrete) one set of wheels can last a year
without significant uneven wear.

Two-footed skating - One-foot lobe transitions are extremely
difficult to perform on inlines…much more difficult than on quads.
Give them some slack. Skaters may choose to cheat by sliding the
free-leg on the floor during the swing to stabilize and set the new
edge. This is not too different then the `scuffing' on the
Counter/Three-turn on the International Iceland Tango.

Flats - On inlines, it is very difficult to set the direction of a
new edge perfectly every time. Incorrectly set edges
cause "clunking", flats and scalloped edges. The accomplished skater
will be able to set more edges correctly. You should reward this
effort, because there is no `subtle' recovery from a poorly set edge,
as with quads or ice.

Twisting - Twisting (or any exaggerated torso movement) is employed
by the skater as a quick fix to correct other problems such as
incorrect starting position of the torso and incorrect amount of
shoulder rotation begun during take-offs. This takes special
concentration during each step and should be rewarded. Other causes
for twisting are poor take-offs, incorrect angle of lean, and poor
posture baseline (double leans).

Slipping/noisy edges/chirping take-offs - Inline skate are noted for
being very quiet, but occasionally you'll hear squeaking as the
wheels slip on the floor surface. Almost always it is a result of
not putting the weight over the center of the skate. If the weight
is mainly over the front wheel, it will slip more easily than if the
weight is evenly distributed over all wheels. There should be no
sounds from the wheels at all, except a low rumble as they roll over
uneven boards on the floor.

Turns - As a general rule, Mohawks are harder to do on inlines; and
three turns are easier on inlines. Judges should reward accordingly.

These are all I can think of, for now. Questions, comments???

Demise of Roller Skating (Was Demise of this group)

This year I was quite shocked at our local competition in Aurora , IL
when I had no problem finding a place to sit. In the past I had to
fight to find and retain my place. I realized that the spectators
weren't there, the skaters weren't hanging around and there was a
decrease in the apparent number of competitors. Unfortunately, I
didn't compete in any other roller competitions due to a hectic
schedule. So I can't comment about the other competitions.

I won't be at the Great Lakes Regionals since I could not come to
terms over the video at the competition and my fees would be 350%
over last year and didn't want to just go to compete (I always place
last). But I'll keep doing quads and inlines and competing where I
  can next year.

I do agree that USARS is listening and trying some things, but maybe
there needs to some more fundamental changes. There is a strong need
for new people with the courage to make fundamental changes.

I have been an active roller, ice and inline skater and was very
extensively involved in getting Adult Nationals going on ice in the
USFSA. Up to that time in the early nineties a number of ice clubs
were very closed minded about adult skating -- they are great for
dancing -- but that's it. Many clubs wouldn't let adults do
freestyle -- only dance. I was the only male in an ice regionals for
the whole Midwest (1 of 3 in the US ) sectionals. My adults were
quite despondent about how they fit in the scheme of things.

In contrast recently, I competed at Adult Nationals on ice and I had
eleven men in the 56+ freestyle Bronze category (up to, but no axle)
and there were 10 ladies. More men than ladies!! And a bunch of old
geezers!! BTW, I got 8th out of 11th after not competing on ice in
  14 years!!

I believe that one of the keys to its success is the intimate
involvement of the athlete. In the early nineties we formed a new
national organization called Adult Skaters Forum(ASF), which I was
President. We had competition, coaches, testing and other committees
formed. We kept USFSA officials informed and sent them our
newsletter. A former USFSA president met with me to discuss what the
heck we were doing and the USFSA was quite concerned. (I hope to
detail the history when I get a chance. It is a great story) We were
quite ready to go our own way and had some high level support. Due
to our efforts, eventually ASF unofficially was merged into USFSA
Adult Skaters Advisory Committee, which I was the first chair. A
number of former World Class roller skaters were involved in the
adult skating. Many were in high places. But the key was keeping the
athlete involved. The skaters were the ones making the decisions
after discussion. That is why it has been such a success.

While you cannot do direct comparisons of the two sports, but there
are many fundamental concepts in common. Every sport has its
weaknesses and strengths. Roller skating is usually more family
friendly, warmer, cheaper and often less crowded during practice
sessions. Ice is cold and less friendly. I also find body position
in figures and dance on rollers better than on ice. I was not
impressed with the ice dancing at ice Adult Nationals compared to
rollers. But the moves, competitions and levels are quite similar
and each sports develops similar skills and occur in similar
environments -- rinks -- one comfortable and one cold.

As others have mentioned there appears to be a large number of
roller rinks in the US that have no competitive program. The rink
owners don't want to be bothered or there are insurance concerns.
Often the lesson programs leave much to be desired and the RSA
programs had been totally ignored. That is until now, when they are
required, which I think is great.

I firmly believe that unless the athlete is intimately involved in
the process there will be minimal progress. Roller skating clubs are
typically run by rinks and coaches. Some clubs have athlete
involvement, but many don't even have club meetings. Some roller
clubs seem to exists only for the owners. One solution would be an
evolution to athlete-run clubs that are independent of a particular
rink and probably independent of any rinks. What's wrong with
including outdoors, particularly involving inline freestyle for a
club? If the athletes are intimately involved they will stay
involved. Clubs could also span multiple rinks. In the Chicago area
there appears to be a lot of infighting among clubs. I have had
difficulty skating at a rink other than my home club's and sometimes
skaters are told by a roller club that they join their club and
compete for them, even if I want to skate there just occasionally.
Rink independent clubs would also free the rink owner from time and
  probably some financial committments.

It may take a new organization to make sense of what is happening,
It would allow for things to be structured away from the traditional
way. How can you change something that goes to the very foundation
of an organization? That is very difficult and courageous. How do
you attract skaters when you are just maintaining the status quo?

I'm quite an enthusiast for inline freestyle. A year ago I proposed
to USARS that I would be glad to gather together interested people
under the USARS auspices to see what can be done to increase
interest. My background speaks for itself. It would involve people
that are genuinely enthused about getting things going. It would
also involve some considerable rethinking of the current approach.
Since I couldn't find a good time at Regionals to meet with someone
I was told that it would be passed on and discussed over the winter.
I presented a number of detailed ideas about how things could be
changed. This apparently was never discussed and things are still at
  the status quo.

I have been told by some skaters that they are afraid to express
their opinions because it will affect the judges opinion of them and
their scores. Often the opinions are express anonymously. That is
sad because involving the skater could be the key to helping make
  things better.

Hi to all!

Since approximately one month I heard buzz about the new Custom
Inlines V2 plates from Australia.

The producer has now disclosed the new line of models at
http://www.custominlines.com.au/
The new site is active from mid of April 2007.

There are three different sets of plates, mainly characterised by the
inclusion of additional special wheels and toe stops. They are geared
for general use, freeskating and dance.
The frames are available in three length and even in different colors.

As far as the online photos can tell, the overall geometry of the
skates, with their uneven spacing of the 3 wheels, is unchanged from
the V1 and is very similar to that of the Snow White frames. The rear wheel has
its center under the end of the heel and the central one stays at approx. 45% -
55% from front / rear.

The plate, as other products of this kind, is from an extruded bar
post-machined with an overall design sweeter than the V1 and
recalling in the upper part the old Snyder Triax inline plates.
The ads tell that the new frame is 18% lighter than the V1 and
nevertheless stronger than that.

The standard grey and the "super jump" toe stops are evidently by
Roll-line Italy. The standard CrossMax wheels are specifically
developed for artistic inline skating in cooperation with Double L's
International, the manufacturer of Snow White frames.
The other "very special" wheel sets for freeskating and dance are
presumably manufactured by Cozmo Australia.

On the site there is the complete price list. A couple of naked
frames (w/o wheels and toe stops) starts at 345 AU$, that is about
210 euros.
