NEXT MEETING 12 November 2009
Eat to Ride: Nutrition for Cyclists and Triathletes with Ann Johnson
Ann Johnson is a triathlete, registered dietation, and AU PhD candidate. She'll
talk to us about how we can structure our diets to optimize our performance from
commuting to centuries and endurance races. A powerpoint presentation will
illustrate her talk. Ann comes to us via Carol Dillard, a friend of Bill Felkey.
Thanks to Bill for making the recommendation.
We'll also update you on the century. We've received gracious thank yous from
the NWPF folks. Mike has all the tee-shirts for volunteers and donors. Please
come to the meeting if you possibly can to pick yours up.
The December meeting is the Holiday Party at the Wolfs on the 5th. More info
later on RSVPing and what to bring.
Please everyone be thinking ahead to next year's bike club scheduling. January
is always the "Boring Business Meeting" where we elect officers and try to plan
the year. I'll be proposing that Willie Fuller be elected V-P, Tim McDonald
Events Chair, and William Wolfe Membership & Outreach Coordinator. Please bring
ideas on offices and officers and meetings.
We're combining the Business Meeting with a "Swap and Sell" opportunity. Bring
stuff you don't want and see if your "trash" is someone's "treasure."
We're already planning the February meeting. It's all about BRAG. Get your
photos ready from BRAG 2009 to share. We also want to outreach to others in the
community who are curious about BRAG. There always is a significant contingent
from Auburn. We're hoping to make it larger.
Brian Karkoska who led us in some great strength training exercises says he love
to return, maybe for March again.
Tim and Chris Graff are both excited about having bike building workshops so
they'll get together and plan that. Chris also wants us to organize a time trial
series. Tim wants EACC to have more than just one organized ride. Tim also wants
to organize a fund raiser for Ty Garner, who remains in critical condition.
There's lots going on and lots to do.
This from Travis Sherman, Alabama Cycling News:
I thought you guys and girls might be interested in this. This is a
group that is working to get essentially the "3 Feet Please" rule
passed in states and communities. They are working to get the
message out. While the "share the road" is useful and giving a
"reasonable space" to pass a cyclist is good, the slogans are a
little vague.
Anyway, I've ordered one of these jerseys: http://www.
3feetplease.com to start getting the message spread to the drivers
where I ride. The jersey is bright yellow and has 3 Feet Please…
Thank you in big print.
The jerseys are reasonably priced at $60 (Voler). If you use ACN
(initials for Alabama Cycling News) beginning sometime tomorrow,
you'll get 10% off plus free shipping. So, please spread this around.
The money that is raised by the sale of the jerseys, other than
paying the product costs of the jerseys, goes to charitable
endeavors. These endeavors include helping getting state and local
laws for "3 Feet" and things such as award money to tipsters that can
help catch perpetrators of bike vs. car hit and runs.
Thanks,
Travis
Twelve Auburnites weathered the cold and windy Tour de Lake on Saturday 24 Oct.
Most rode the fifty mile loop, while only one to our knowledge, William Wolfe,
braved seventy miles.
Kim and John, Willie and Alice Kaye, Mike and Angela, William Wolfe and Tim
McDonald, Dexter and Aquila, and Mike Smith and [I know but can't remember the
name of the man he rode with) did the ride. We saw other folks who had done the
Johnny Ray Century.
As always Bill Golden and his great team sagged and cheered every one up.
Over ninety did the ride. So, for a reschedule ride on a blustery day, the West
Point Lake Coalition did well.
Larry Murphy, and the Auburn Golden's team of Danny, Grant, et al. rode the
Lance Armstrong Cancer Classic on Sunday. We'll post info on that when we get
it.
That was the last nearby ride on my ride calendar for the year. If you know of
any others please post.
Looks like it will be an appropriately brisk fall day on Sunday
for the Long Shadows bike rally. Join us for an end-of-season
throwdown with AlaBike in Huntsville.
We’ve laid out a nice 38-mile loop starting
at the Lowe Mill at 2:30 PM. The ride will be lead by local National and
World Champ Mike Olheiser. This will be one of Mike’s last rides
before he departs for the 6-day, UCI 2.2, Tour of the Southland in New
Zealand. If that seems too sporty, you can follow the 29-mile shortcut loop
or hang out a little bit and do the 12-mile
downtown tour.
Afterwards, we’ll have Olde Towne Beer on tap, smoked chicken, pasta, and Peggy
Anne lemon bars at starting at 5 PM.
We’ll socialize a bit, do a little bit of AlaBike business
and launch into the North Alabama premier showing of Veer, the Movie at 6:30 PM
upstairs at the Flying Monkey.
You are invited to help AlaBike cast a long
shadow...

Don't forget the ColdStone Creamery Benefit today for the Lance Armstrong

contribute 10% of sales between noon and 10p to the Foundation.
Here’s a pleasant end-of-season event in

Larry Murphy and Danny, Grant, and folks from Golden's Bike Shop are doing the
Lance Armstrong Cancer ride in Austin, Texas on October 24.
To help raise money for the cause Cold Stone Creamery is having a fundraiser on
Monday, October 12th from 12:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
10% of all sales will go to the cause.
Would it be possible that you might could send this information out to the EACC
and anyother bikers that you think might would be interested.
Thanks for your help. Jan.
Kim found the registration form. Go to Golden's in LaGrange or Auburn to pick
one up or print off a copy from the pdf file in the "Files" section of this
website. - See it to your left.
I'll bring some to tomorrow's club meeting. We'll be reviewing the century and
making plans for next year.

I don't know anything about a century in LaGrange. Do you mean the "Tour de
Lake" in West Point on the 24th? Here's that link, which hasn't been updated for
awhile. Otherwise does anyone know about the 18 October event?

Golden's is one of the ride planners. Someone ask him if it's going when you
drop into the shop. Post the answer here. Thanks.

Somehow Adam's message got garbled. Here's the message about this great local event. The time trial is seven easy miles for anyone who rides around Auburn. It's a great "first race" event. I did it in 2007 and had a blast.
Here's Adam:

Thanks Angela for putting the word out about the race. I always get nervous right before the event. I hope to see you and all the Auburn gang at the race. We have some really nice trophies and prizes this year.
Thanks again,

Team,
Great event, great ride! Can anyone tell me where we can view/download the
photo's that were taken by your club during the ride on 26 September 2009?
Thanks!
Hello, I'm wondering if you can pass this on to anyone you think might be able to help.
Thanks!
Adam

This year we are hoping to have as many as 21 volunteers to help make the event a success. If you are able to join us, we are looking for 6 volunteers total for the Time Trail to help with

We will need you to be available from 7:00 to 12:00.

Course set up-putting out signs and cones.

Course marshal-stop cars for riders and provide direction for riders.
If you are only able to help in the afternoon, we will need you to be available by 12:00. We will meet at Sherwood Elementary School on Idle Hour Drive in Phenix City.
Your time and energy are greatly appreciated. Please contact Adam or Carolyn Weinbaum 706-327-9881 or developingcanine@... if you are able to help. If you know anyone who might be interested in helping out, racing or just cheering the racers on, please forward this email to them!
The Bike & Breakfast ride starts from Auburn High School on Samford Road at 7:30

which one the group will ride that day.
The ride is open to all and all levels, so please join us.

Don't forget the TriStates 100 tomorrow out of Dothan. This is a relatively flat
course and the perfect first century. Great cause; great folks. Check out the

Hi, Angela,
Of course, any and everyone is invited to come anytime. Honestly, though, the
Bike Committee already supports it and has voted unanimously to recommend it to
Council [the 3-foot passing distance law]. I think when we present it to
Council, that will be the place we need a show of support. At the committee
meeting next week we're just going to discuss how to present it to Council.
When we get it scheduled for Council, that would be the time to beat the drums
and get a big turnout.
Thanks,
Kirk
--->We'll be sure to announce that Council Meeting!
Jeff Jakeman forwarded this on a hit and run in Colorado. It makes me wonder why
officials haven't yet released the name and photograph of the man who struck Ty
then fled the scene...

The cycling community is mobilizing in light of the recent collisions between
cars and bicycles. Another apparently occurred yesterday on Samford.
Members of the Bike Committee want cyclists throughout the community to come to
the next meeting next Tuesday, 25 August, at 7p at the Development Services
Building, 171 North Ross Street in the Conference Room (next to the Police
Station in the former Library building).
We want to discuss enacting a three-foot law requiring that passing distance for
cars. There are other ideas that people have to make cycling safer in our areas.
I'm worried about the increase in the amount and speed of traffic on Shelton
Mill Road with the new development. You'll have other points to raise. There
will also be updates on accidents.
Here's the City of Auburn Bike Committee website
http://www.auburnalabama.org/cycle/
Please make every effort to attend.
