Re: [EACycling] Ty Garner hit by AU student on Shug

Angela, Ty is my wife' s first cousin. He has a fractured on the left side of his head. The pressure on his brain has decreased in the past two days. The doctor had induced a coma on Saturday afternoon, but has now taken him off those drugs. Presently he is being sedated heavily. There was also some facial injuries and lacerations on his arms. He also has two cracked vertabra. We still do not know if there has been any brain damage, he has been unconcious since the impact. He and his wife have three sons, the oldest started kindergarten today. They live in Opelika at 2111 Sanders Creek Drive and any cards and thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for getting the news out.

Subject: [EACycling] Ty Garner hit by AU student on Shug

You've already heard about the accident on Shug on Saturday morning and you may know the cyclist, Ty Garner, a physical therapist. We don't yet know more than was in the newspaper on Sunday. As soon as we have an address for Ty, I will post it so that we can at the least send cards and good will to him and his family.

Shug Jordan is part of the city of Auburn Bicycle Network and I ride it regularly as part of the EUD/Shug loop. In six years I have had one incident when an SUV purposefully buzzed me. However I personally am reconsidering riding Shug in light of drivers while texting, which is not yet illegal in Alabama. In fairness, we do not know if the driver who hit Ty was texting.

Does anyone ride Shug? If not, why not? Should the city remove it from the Bike Network?

This clarification from Kirk Iversen: Angela, Shug Jordan is coded on the Bike Network Map as a "proposed facility". That means we want safe cycling for it. It...
