An unsolicited testimonial from the SCCC Rides Captain (Godess), Sharon Bayler….

If you cannot make the ride, send in a donation anyway.  It’s a great cause and the closest we’ve come yet for getting an actual signed bike loop in Alabama.  The only time I have seen anything of this nature was in Victoria B.C., the bike-friendliest city in North America.

I “previewed” this ride Saturday, it’s truly a great metric.  It deviates some from the route we’ve done as the Two Wheel Tour before, this time going to out Cotton Belt to Elkmont (there will be a  rest stop at the Piggly Wiggly in Elkmont, one of the sponsors), and then goes north, and west, looping back around to Cairo Hollow Road and back in.  The north westerly portion is pretty hilly but nothing longer than  ¾ of a mile or so.  The scenery is great, and if there is a little rough pavement in the middle it’s only a reminder that the money raised will go towards improving the routes.

Sharon.

Here’s a great little season’s end metric century from Athens, AL in Limestone County on October 14.  It follows some of the roads favored by area cyclists.   The route takes in a variety of terrain with lots of little, swooping rollers, woods and farmland.  The ride starts right on the historic courthouse square in Athens.  Post ride, showers and a nice meal are available nearby.  Options include a 24-mile loop and a historic downtown tour.

The cool part is that the ride is fundraiser for Limestone County Parks and Recreation, which is raising matching funds to qualify for a $500K TEA-21 grant to create fully signed bike and motorcycle touring routes all around Limestone County.  I’m partial to this project, since we (AlaBike) helped them plot the routes and prioritize the phasing of a full-scale plan to connect the county with over 140 miles of signed bike routes and fresh asphalt where needed.

The Mayor of Athens, county commissioners and the other municipalities in the county are all signed onto the project because they know that the Two-Wheel Trail will bring tourists to Limestone County to take in their great countryside, scenic two-lane roads and abundance of good BBQ joints.
