Ok, so here goes. The family vacation to Flagler beach Fla is coming up
and, dog gone it, I want to ride my bike. Not to there, mind you, but
while I'm there. I suspect I might not want to take my cherished and
only bike to the coast, being concerned that the salt in the air might
corrode components or something. But will a week and a couple hundred
miles really make any difference? Have any of you done this and have a
bike that survived the experience? Do you have an opinion, educated or
otherwise, that you'd like to share? I'd love to hear it.
Thanks!
Andrew

Thursday - ITT/Sprints - Racing in the CAT 4/5s over 35 group.
The ITT course was a fast out and back with one off camber slight right turn. There was not very good traffic control and the start was in downtown Buford and ran parallel to the train tracks. :30 seconds between starts. I was going good until the turnaround when a truck decided to stop instead of pay attention to the marshall waiving them through. Took the turn around and caught the rider in front of me with 200m to go. I came in 7th at 16:12.2 (25.92 MPH). Chip beat me by 1.2 (25.96 MPH) seconds to come in 6th (out of 36). Greg took a spill on the off camber turn but recovered well.
The sprints were a blast. I wish that I was better prepared. You roll for a quarter of a mile and then the last 200m wait for someone to make a move. It's like a standoff in the old west. Unfortunately, I came in 4th and only the top three moved to the next round. Still, 6th in
the GC after two stages.
Friday - Circuit Race - Johns Creek
Lots of turns, including several tight, quick ones. I was in 6th in the GC and only down by 20 seconds. Also, there was rain and they shortened the race. There would be two time bonus laps of 15,10,5 seconds for 1,2,3 place. So, I took a flyer on the third lap hoping to guess right on which lap they would ring the bell. I was up to about a 30 second lead and they rang the bell on the sixth lap, but I was spent after leading three laps by myself. So, the group caught me on the last turn before the finishing straight. Hung in the lead group and recovered, then got dropped off the back when they accelerated for the second time bonus. Noticed that I was in the group with the leader and his team and decided to create some goodwill (hopefully for use during the road race), and I paced him back into the group. Finished in 14th, still in 6th on GC.
Saturday - TTT - Road Race - Monroe
TTT was 13 miles out and back, no turns. Greg Nowicki, Phil Butler and I did it as a DC team. At mile 1 there was a road crossing and I bent my skewer and jammed my front wheel into the fork. We only had three on our team and the time was taken on the third person. So, I had to finish. Averaged 20 mph with the front wheel jammed into the fork. But of course gave up 8 minutes and went from 6th in GC to 26th. Road race was terrible, lots of RR crossings and subsequent crashes, lots of nervous riders, etc. I was mid pack and flatted jumped off the side of the road to get out of the way and of course there was no wheel truck. I had my co2 and tube, but I didn't seat the clincher properly and blew out the wheel when I inflated it. I walked for a mile and got swept up by the Lifetime Bikes van (Thank you guys). Needless to say my ToA was over. Greg and Phil did well in the road race, with Phil finishing
in the top 15.
After that string of bad luck, I decided to focus on hanging at the pool. So, I skipped the races Sunday and Monday. Great race though and I hope that it becomes and annual event.

are going well. Martin's in a lot of pain, as expected; but
the docs are pleased with his progress. He's eating well and walking
(slowly) on his own. He's no longer connected to anything but a
portable heart monitor.
His doctor says he will be out of commission as a cyclist for 8 weeks. He will
be able to work out on a trainer before that, maybe in 6 weeks.
We so appreciate the calls and emails and, of course, the blood donations! The
surgery was very clean, and he ended up not needing a transfusion, but it was
very comforting to know that we had a good inventory of Dunwoody Cycling A+
blood ready if necessary.
Thanks for the offer of lawn care. I remember hearing Martin joke about that
before going in for the surgery. But we have a lawn service.

The century list was put on Yahoo! Groups / Dunwoody Cycling / Files / Century Schedule 08 with the new dates for 2008 and updates for any changes in their URL. If you look at the file and the date for a particular event is still 2007, that means I have not found their update for 2008. I will put some of the more popular centuries on the DunwoodyCycling.com calendar as they get nearer.

Martin,
I just gave. We just had our 5th annual Mud4Blood drive

offshoot for Bike4Blood with limited success and some amount of personal
sacrifice. I'm back on the bike now and hope we can say the same for you soon

I'd recommend you id 2 possibilities, then take her to see them, and let the lbs
guy fit her. If he or she is good, Mom will feel comfortable in going back
there, on her own, for service, especially the minor stuff. This is good for
her, and you. Willing, capable service is very important to older folks.
Knowing she can go by and get that rattling shifter adjusted, for free!, will
increase her confidence and enjoyment. There's nothing worse than a
malfunctioning, complicated toy - it's supposed to be fun. My $0.02 worth.

My mom is in her mid 60s and looking for a hybrid bike. While she wouldn't
make the A team leaving out of Dunwoody high school, she likes to ride the
Silver Comet Trail and the river loop between Powers Ferry and Columns. Any
ideas? I've been looking at the Schwinn Voyageur and the Diamondback
Edgewood, both of which have a "walk-through" area between the front wheel
and the pedals so you don't have to step higher than the pedals to get your
leg through. [Ok - insert your favorite "Your Ma . . ." joke here!]
Ideally we'd spend less than $400.

Are any DC'ers going to ride in the GeorgiaCup Tour of Atlanta? It sure
would be nice to see a friendly (or at least less adversarial) face in
my first competition. It consists of 7 stages over 5 days, Thu 5/22 to
Mon 5/26. The name is curious since the closest stage to Atlanta is at
Johns Creek.
I would be in the Competitive >35 category and plan on riding the Buford
time trial, Monroe road race, and the John's Creek criterium. I will
ride the Gainesville crit on Sunday if I have done well and/or having a
good time. I have a conflict with the Buford sprints and final crit on
Monday but would ride the crit if I had a chance to podium in the
general classification. There is also a team time trial Saturday
morning before the road race but I question the logic of teaming up with
other individuals on their own agenda. It would be a different matter
if we had a DC team.
I welcome any advice and will write about the experience.
