Pat,
Does Billy have any eyesight at all?
When Houdini was losing his vision, he would walk behind me and lightly
bounce his nose off the back of my head....he was doing that long before we
knew he was losing vision.
Now that Houdini is totally blind, he has figured out that he can go places
faster when I'm on his back! With enough time, patience and
understanding...Billy will figure that out too! Consistency and routine
helps to build the trust and blind horses will pay closer attention to you
once they do trust you.
The worst possible situation for a blind horse, is to be bounced around from
owner to owner. Even letting different people ride your blind horse can be
un-nerving to them. Blind horses need stability and a safe zone (actually
all horses need that) in order to be more accepting of new and strange
situations. In the process of introducing new things, you constantly refer
back to the familiar.

I hope many of you remember the earlier story of "Billy Ugly" who
became a member of my family on or around late 2004. It is now
early 2006. Where is Billy Ugly now?

We were trying to figure out whether Billy was naturally stupid or
with eyesight problems ! Yeah, he had many problems,.. 'hear tell'
abusive problems..., but it seems eyesight may have been his major
drawback.

Go figure.. a foal having eyesight problems from birth ?... even
though it happens among humans - no one ever thinks it among the
horse world. No wonder he was abused early on, he wasn't understood
and finally as a six-year old -- his handicap has been diagnosed.

THANK GOODNESS I came along in his life. If I have to put down Billy
because I fear subjecting another rider on his back who does not
understand his blindness, it must be done. Yes, he shows
dangerousness tendencies because of his fears & inability to see
things close by. BUT There are abilities he has that I wish other
horses would show, & that is more of the smelling, and putting head
down to sniff the ground where they are walking.... and what I
noticed from Billy early on... is that he sniffed ever so gently
from my neck, to my cheek to my ear...

he was quiet, gentle and could look me in the eye...

It was creepy when you think about the eye to eye contact but yet
brought about a bond between us.

I'd even like to add about Billy's extraordinary features. When he sniffed
from neck level to cheek level, he sensed my reaction, he was not stupid to
human response. Out of my own fear, I would not let him smell me
completely....was I wrong in doing that?
