If anyone is looking for a good Vet in Southern Wisconsin, I highly
recommend Dr. Rodriguez at the Janesville Animal Medical Center. He
is new to the clinic.
Last Tuesday, Houdini forgot that he was a totally blind horse and
was running with the herd (deer hunters in the woods this time of
year) and he managed to run into something that ripped his face open.
Another boarder discovered what happened only after she noticed
fresh blood smears all over her white horse. The Farm called me at
home and I skipped school to trailer him into the vet. It took 24
staples and 3 sub Q stitches to put his face back together!
Everyone was totally impressed with the work that Dr. Rodriguez had
done. He is a very perceptive and intelligent man who adheres
strictly to aseptic technique. Little things like rotating the
needle after a sub Q tetnus injection to minimize the friction on
withdrawl and seal the needle track upon removal, to thoroughly
scrubbing the site before suturing and replacing each needle that
fell on the floor when Houdini flipped his head during the nerve
blocking on his face. I tend to prefer Vets that treat animals with
the same standards of care that we humans get from our doctors.
Anyway, its been four days since the incident and there is no sign
of infection or dehiscence. I liked the way Dr. Rodriguez took his
time with my horse , doing a good job of reading his behaviour,
anticipating his reactions, and creating an atomosphere that helped
to put my horse at ease.
