Dear DISC Members,

Just a quick update on our various projects:

- Chavez Ridge DGC is doing well!

We have some work ahead of us - mainly a trail improvement push in the late
fall
after the rains soften the ground a bit.

The course is getting play and folks seem to be having fun. If you want to
help -
please go out and play a round with some gloves and a trash bag - let's clean up
as much
of the area as we can now that the Parks Dept. has installed trash cans up there
for us!

In an effort to help clear out "inappropriate activity" in the area, the Park
Ranger is
working to help us out by putting "No Parking" signs more extensively along that
upper
ridge road and to limit night time parking on Park Row Dr.

- Junior's Ultimate is really taking off under our stewardship.

The Silver Lake Ultimate League was a great success ( 8 - 11 year olds, coed, 3
teams, big fun) and has helped launch....

Our new middle school program in the NE area of Los Angeles. In conjunction
with
LACER Stars after school program, DISC will be offering an Ultimate program to 4
middle
schools - ending in a tournament in the late fall.

DISC just ran the 2006 So Cal Junior Ultimate Frisbee Invitational (held in
conjunction
with LAOUT's Summer League Finals). 5 elementary schools attended this fun
event. SYS's
Ellen Ochoa took 1st place and Wilmington Park 2nd.

We just finished our 8th (or 9th?) Summer Frisbee season with LAUSD's Youth
Services. The SYS elementary school tournament will be held in October (look for
Ellen
Ochoa and Wilmington Park to do well...) and SYS will be running a middle school
tourney
this year (their first!) in December.

Folks,

This is a more complete version of the wrap-up email that I sent out the day
after the
event.

FLING X

Thanks a bunch for helping to make the Fling X such a fun event. It was great
to see all
the Juniors out there from Burbank and to meet the Wylot children. The results
are up at:

http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=5959

Who won? Well.... Phil Brathwaite in Open shot the best score at -18, but you
could argue
that Senior Grand Phil Ganshert's score (2nd best of all players) of -12 was the
most
impressive performance. Of course, "Most Fun Wins", which makes Brittany Breed
our
champ (she scored in Mini Accuracy and also nabbed the precious plastic in her
division).
The Wylots won - kids in the pool at the Ramada across the way - disc golf in
the park and
Randy takes home one of the 25 Chavez Ridge SLs. Cliff and Dave think they won
- taking
home jeans to replace those destroyed in work at the Ridge AND plastic in their
divisions.
Joe Graham loved the Zoo and came back for plastic in Masters at the Fling X.
Kathyren
Downing got her disc over Erin White in a playoff. Steve Hines was atop the
Advanced
division and Geoff Larson really scored with his victory in Telepathic Putting
and the 3rd
best score (-11) for a win in Intermediate. Disc Arcade and closest to results
below;

Mini Accuracy:
1st - Pat Sweeney
2nd - Jon Freedman
3rd - Brittany Breed

Disc Shuffleboard
1st - Chris Lindgren
2nd - Brandin Babin
3rd - Jesse Ising

Closest To;
1st Round
Pros - Phil Ganshert
Ams - Lawrence Halili

2nd Round
Pros - Pat Sweeney
Ams - Roddy Flocken

Thanks to Discovering The World for their help and to Innova for allowing us to
buy plastic
in their Candy Fund Raising Program. Thanks to the LA Department of Parks and
Recreation for their sponsorship. Thanks to So Cal for loaning us the
scoreports and for
providing the Closest To prizes and to Robert Valenzuela for his traffic cop
efforts on a
crowded (and HOT) day at the park. And special thanks to Howard Tan, Stork, and
the
Jamison and Stroh Families for becoming new Chavez Ridge Hole Sponsors (and of
course
to our other hole sponsors - full list at discsports.org).

CHAVEZ RIDGE WORK DAY!

June 24th is a special work day up at Chavez Ridge DGC at Elysian Park. Please
put it on
your calendar and come on up and help us finish installing the signs and the
natural tees.
We NEED to officially open the course by July 1st before the extension of our
Right Of Entry
to install it expires. We will be working up there regularly throughout June -
Thurs, Fri,
Sat and Sun are all possible workdays - likely from 9 to noon shifts. Call
Cliff to join us up
there 323-574-7678.

If you are going up there to play, first check out the listing below and
download the Ely 18
map from Cliff's .mac homepage. You WILL need that map in hand to navigate the
course.

http://www.pdga.com/course/courses_by_city.php?id=2350

Thanks to all those that have helped work out at the Ridge to this point,
including Dave
Hadder, Homer, Chris and Nick, Noah Rodriguez, Perry, Jonny, Sam and Dore from
OG, CE
Courtney and Marie Chao, Babin, Mike and Robert, Tony Cahill, Jake, Jimmy Hutch,
Roger
Bell, Cam Lockwood, and Robert Shipman and the LA Conservation Corps.

NOTE: those Chavez Ridge Star SLs that went out to the division winners at the
Fling -
there are only 25 of those. Also - the Glow Sidewinders that Hole Sponsors get
- only 25
of those. We also have limited runs (25) of Star Wraiths and Star TLs. You can
get a set of
3 (Star SL, Star TL and Star Wraith) for $50 if you want to help DISC raise the
rest of the
money to install Chavez Ridge.

Other DISC News:

- Our LAUSD Summer Discsports Program begins on July 5th (our 8th year!). Two
player
teams will visit 75 plus schools (mainly elementary) and help coach kids in disc
sports.

- DISC is helping the LA City Rec and Parks department run a Junior's Ultimate
League at
Silver Lake Rec Center (8 - 11 years old - coed). The league will run from June
17th
through the end of July. Games are all at Silver Lake Rec from 2:30 pm to 4 pm
on
Saturdays. Feel free to come by and spectate!

Things are really moving along! We are getting this thing installed - though we
can use
some more help.

We have 10 anchors in the ground and 14 collars welded to the poles. Once we
get the
lock protectors done (Noah should have them by Friday) - we are ready to
assemble and
install some baskets. Wow - bring your cameras to help document this!

For this "tryout" phase we will install targets 3 to 18 (all pins except the two
down on the
flats) and then move on to installing tees and completing trails.

Those who have been up there appreciate the venue. Wow - beautiful setting for
disc
golf up on the ridge. Great views of downtown LA, Dodger Stadium and the San
Gabriels.
So come on up. A lot of the heavy lifting has been done - work that remains
includes
finishing some trail work, planting more anchors, assembling the baskets and
putting in
the tees.

Pretty much any Friday, Sat and Sunday from 10 until 1pm - you can come up and
help us put this course in. Call Cliff first 323-660-4026 or cell 323-574-7678.
We have
heard from some of you. Some folks have showed up to help and a few have even
sponsored holes (check out discsports.org for the list of sponsors). Thanks for
every
effort that you make to help us put in this course.

The specific needs list on this target installation segment includes:
- anchor covers (we have extra locks from Master lock - so we are looking for
someone to
fabricate metal covers with a locking tab for our 6 extra pin positions)
- 8 more 90 pound bags of concrete (contact Cliff if you want to drop some bags
off at the
container).

and trail work:

- entry trail work by #12's target
- exit trail work at 14.
- entry/exit trail by target 7

The Fling X at Whittier Narrows will be super fun! I will have the
registration posted up at
PDGA.com soon (have been busy up at the Ridge - but I will get back to Fling
prep next
week). It is filling up - avoid disappointment and get your entry in now.

3/11/06
Dear DISC members,

We are happy to announce that this year's Fling X will be held at the lovely
Whittier
Narrows Recreation Area in South El Monte on Sat. June 3rd. We had hoped to hold
it at the
new Chavez Ridge course in LA, but a number of factors make the change to
Whittier a
good idea, Installation just began at Chavez Ridge on March 1st. Say thanks
to LA Parks
and Rec – they were happy with the Ice Bowl event, so they are are on board to
co-sponsor
the event at Whittier Narrows. Once again there will be a limit on the number of
players
(72) in the event. Avoid disappointment, fill out and return the enclosed form
ASAP. We
will once again be a PDGA* event (C-tier points) and a So Cal Disc Golf** point
event.
The Fling X will be run like last year's event, with food and a cool player's
package
accompanying the fun of disc golf and Disc Arcade games. Close to a thousand
dollars in
prizes were awarded last year and the DISC club account grew by more than $600.
Our
thanks to last year's helpful and generous players, volunteers and sponsors
(Innova, The
Ventura Disc Golf Club and Discovering the World).
If you are interested in knowing what DISC has done for you lately, in addition
to running
the Fling IX in 2005, we ran the Fall Jr. Discsports Program for the Los Angeles
Unified
School District's South Youth Services. We set up Ultimate and disc golf
demonstrations
and then ran an exciting season ending tournament. Some pix of DISC programs are
up at
www.discsports.org (which links to our new Yahoo Clubs website). We shot a
documentary
of the program and are currently seeking an editor to cut it for us. We are
proud that our
4th annual Ice Bowl In Paradise turned out so well, and DISC volunteers (please
help) are
hard at work installing the Chavez Ridge DGC in Elysian Park. Work crews are on
site most
every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Please contact (and thank!) Mike McNamara
with your
name, phone, email and availability to help at
chavezridge@...
Updates may also be posted at www.burbankdiscgolfers.com or www.discsports.org
You
can reach Cliff Towne by phone at 323-660-4026 to sign up as well. You can also
help by
sponsoring a hole (see discsports.org). Hey – Master Lock just donated the
locks for the
course - nice research Homer!
DISC is also helping LA City Rec and Parks run a Junior's Ultimate League at
Silver Lake Rec
Center from mid June to late July and we are working with LA County Parks and
Rec to help
them run the LA County Amateur Disc Golf Championships as a So Cal and PDGA
event in
mid October!
The Ice Bowl in Paradise was again a DISC membership event this year (if you
played, you
will save $15 on your Fling X entry). We had perfect weather and thanks to Los
Angeles
County Parks and Recreation signing on as a sponsor – we had a perfect venue for
the
event. Oversubscribed to 82 players we added 3 holes and played 21 holes each
round.
Not only was our 4th annual Ice Bowl DISC's biggest ever – it was the most
successful. We
raised close to $1000 for the LA Regional Food Bank.
The help of So Cal Disc Golf was indispensable this year. Big thanks to Suzette
Simons, to
Jerry Ross for scorecard help and to Tita's John Kehrbaum for spotting at Hole
#13 both
rounds. So Cal donated some prizes and ran the CTP contest this year and was
able to
hand out membership packs and the cool new bag tags at registration. Homer
Vazira and
Chris Ginnaven helped with lunch supplies and set up. Robert Valenzuela helped
with
course preparation. Also, thank Chris Canning for our cool new logo!
The Fling (our 10th!) is similarly priced this year. We aim to have a fun time
and raise the
same $600 or so that we have in past years. Pros – please note that the top
third in each
division win prizes or gift certificates – not cash. If you can't make it,
please support our
efforts to grow the sport (AND get a super cool collectable Chavez Ridge disc)
by joining
DISC ("Membership only box on the flyer). If you are coming and want to add to
the
bottom line grab some extra Disc Arcade vouchers. DISC donations are tax
deductible as
usual. Please contact us if you can help with our education and recreation
projects, or wish
to help in other projects to grow the sport.

Thanks so much for your support!

* A year's subscription to Disc Golf World is an attractive benefit of PDGA

Folks, Feb 9th, 2006

On Jan 4th our last big hoop was navigated when the Parks Commission approved
our
pilot project disc golf course in Elysian Park. I have in my hand right now the
completed
Right Of Entry permit that gives Discsports In Southern California 3 months
(March 1st –
May 31st) to install the Chavez Ridge course. It is signed by the Metro Region
Superintendent and Chavez Ridge is now one GIANT step closer to becoming a
reality.

We will be repairing trails, constructing tees (5' by 10' boxed tees packed with
decomposed granite), and digging post holes to put in targets and tee
signs. There is also
some trash that needs to be hauled up to the ridge top road. There is a good
amount of
work to be done. Please sign up to help if you have not done so. Most work
shifts will be
on weekends but please note if you can be available for some weekday (Friday?)
work
parties also. Go to www.burbankdiscgolfers.com , click on Chavez Ridge and then
Information to access the sign up form. You can also email Mike McNamara at
chavezridge@... with your phone, email and availability. If
you have
friends or disc golfers with course installation or construction experience –
please send
them our way. Volunteers need to fill out a LA Rec and Parks Volunteer
application and a
fingerprint waiver form – Cliff has these and Mike McNamara will soon have some
also.

If you want to be contacted for the upcoming installation planning meeting –
please call or
email Cliff 323-574-7678 – clifftowne@...  We will be setting the date for
this
meeting soon. Meanwhile, pat yourselves on the back for the role that you have
played
(and will continue to play) in getting this course in and celebrate – this is an
attractive spot
and we are finally getting the chance to put a disc golf course in Los Angeles!

Dear DISC members,

Below find the cover letter that was just mailed out to any of you that we have
the snail
mail address for. You can download the pdf of the Ice Bowl flyer at:

http://homepage.mac.com/clifftowne/

the cover letter:

Once again we have an attractive event designed for DISC's 4th Ice Bowl In
Paradise. YES -
there will be a limit on the number of players in the event. Avoid
disappointment, fill out
and return the enclosed form ASAP. We will again be a PDGA* and So Cal Disc Golf
event
this year! The So Cal board has pledged the $2 So Cal fee directly back to the
Food Bank
again! So, sign up to So Cal prior to the event and collect So Cal points for
your play in the
Ice Bowl**.
The Ice Bowl In Paradise at Whittier Narrows will be run like last year's event,
with lunch
and a cool T-shirt (comes with your DISC membership) accompanying the fun of
disc golf
and Disc Arcade games. You will need to donate at least $5 to the LA Regional
Food Bank
(please do more if you can) and half of the Disc Arcade proceeds will go to them
as well.
Our thanks to last year's helpful and generous players, volunteers and sponsors
(Trader
Joes, So Cal Disc Golf and Discovering the World).
If you are interested in knowing what Discsports In Southern California has done
for you
lately, in addition to running the LA Fling IX in 2005, we ran our Jr.
Discsports Summer
Program for the Los Angeles Unified School District's South Youth Services. We
set up
Ultimate and disc golf demonstrations and played with the kids at elementary and
middle
schools throughout Los Angeles. We are currently helping in the production of a
documentary of that program – very exciting! For more info check out
www.discsports.org
(which links to our Yahoo group site).
We will soon be jumping through the next (and hopefully final!) hoop for the
Chavez Ridge
DGC at Elysian Park. Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks (the City)
is
preparing their report for the Rec and Parks Commission. Given that we have
received
final approval from the Committee to Save Elysian Park – we are confidently
hopeful that
we will get approval to install the course in December.
John Babin, Mike McNamara and the Burbank Disc Golf Club have offered to
coordinate the
installation of the Chavez Ridge DGC at Elysian. Please go to
www.burbankdiscgolfers.com
and click on the Chavez Ridge tab and sign up to help with the installation. We
will need a
lot of help to install this course on that lovely hillside above Solano Canyon
and Dodger
Stadium. Also, be alert for the Chavez Ridge hole sponsorship opportunities
that will soon
be available to cover the balance of the installation costs (DISC has already
bought the
baskets, signs and anchors – we will need some more money to cover decomposed
granite, lumber, equipment rental and other installation costs). Please contact
Cliff
(contact info below*) if you can help with any of our education and recreation
projects, or
wish to help in other projects to grow the sport.

Thanks so much for your support and Play LA!

Dear DISC Members,

Here at DISC, we try to balance the objectives of keeping you informed and not
clogging
your inbox, but I am warning you that you may get more frequent notices than
usual from
us this fall. Why?

One - Because we are expecting to begin installation on the Chavez Ridge DGC at
Elysian
on Sat. Sept. 10th. If you have not had a chance to sign up to help yet (and I
have it on
good authority that many have yet to sign up), please go immediately to
www.burbankdiscgolfers.com and click on the top banner to get to the sign up
page.

Info page:

http://www.burbankdiscgolfers.com/elysianpark.htm

Pin placements page:

http://www.burbankdiscgolfers.com/chavezridgepinplacement.htm

Please give John Babin and Mike McNamara your name, phone and email there so
that they
can contact you when the install plan is ready for volunteers to commit to
specific shifts
(soon). The plan at this point is for 4 four hour shifts per weekend. Can you
spare 4
hours to help? Thank these Burbank guys (BIG TIME) for stepping in to
coordinate the
installation. Also thank Cliff Towne, Chris Ginnaven, Tita Ugalde, Dan Reza,
Andrew
Garsten and Jon Freedman for their help on various phases of this project. (Hey
- thank
yourselves as well – your support of DISC has made this course possible.)
There will be
hole sponsorship opportunities for Chavez Ridge also – look for that info as
soon as we
nail down the installation budget a little better.

Two –The production of the video of our youth disc sports program with LAUSD is
going
great. South Youth Services stepped up and gave our 4 top schools a field trip
to LAOUT's
Summer Ultimate Finals this past Sunday (great photos of our kids playing in
Monday's
Daily News - page 6 – entitled "Disky Business"). LAOUT invited us to hold an
elementary
school tournament in conjunction with their event. CE Courtney, Tony, Lee, Jim
and some
other generous, professional film makers volunteered to cover Discsports In
Southern
California's Summer Juniors Ultimate Tournament (wow – watch out Hoop Dreams and
Mad
Hot Ballroom!). Congrats to Wilmington Park for winning the event. Woodlawn
came in
2nd with Cimarron and Lillian at 3rd and 4th. Contact me and I will email a
quicktime file
teaser of some of the early footage. We will have a great tool to help spread
disc sports
when this project is finished. Our 2005 Summer Program with the kids will end on
8/19.
Both kids and staff are looking forward to the tournament that will take place
this fall or
winter (you will get notice when the dates are set).

So, if you have been looking forward to a disc golf course in LA for YEARS –
please help
out some more and go to http://www.burbankdiscgolfers.com/elysianpark.htm to
sign up
on the volunteer list to help install the Chavez Ridge DGC, and if you want to
view a rough
edit teaser of the video project with the kids, just email me and I will forward
you a
quicktime file that Tony of Peck Media put together with some of the early
footage.

Dear DISC members,

We have made big headway on the proposed Chavez Ridge Disc Golf Course
for Elysian Park. John Babin, Mike McNamara and Robert Zion of Burbank
met with me and the members of the CCSEP subcommittee to go over
install plans last Saturday.

The citizen's group subcommittee is excited by the idea of bringing a
fine recreation facility to Elysian and I am excited that the Burbank
crew is willing to take the baton from me by organizing the
installation - Thanks guys!

We are going to need everyone's help to put this course in. Please go
to www.burbankdiscgolfers.com and click on the banner that runs over
the top of the front page. This will take you to a form that you can
fill out with name, phone and email so that John or Mike can contact
you later to sign you up for one of the work crews. Get your buddies
to sign up too! Let's flood these guys with the message that "yes - we
are willing to help get a course installed in LA!" Also, If you can
help with supplies or equipment or have some construction experience -
please note that in the comment section.

Thanks, Cliff Towne

Great news Disc Golf Fans!

Yesterday, the Lake Casitas Disc Golf course was granted an official 1 year
trial
by the Casitas Valley Water District Board of Supervisors with only one
dissenting vote.

Congratulations to the Ventura Disc Golf Club who showed up to the meeting in
force and
dressed nicer than I've ever seen them and to the Casitas Park Rangers Brian &
Rob who
championed our cause!

Now it is up to the rest of us to prove that they made the correct decision!

Also, for anyone interested in helping us celebrate, there will be a course
monthly this saturday at 10pm unless otherwise instructed.

May your Anheuser always helix!

<tt>
sorry - revised slightly 6/8 <BR>
<BR>
<BR>
The Ventura Disc Golf Club had a stunning piece of land along Lake Casitas
to use for <BR>
their course - elevation, vegetation and super views of the lake. It was a
perfect venue for <BR>
this year's Fling.<BR>
First off we want to thank the Ventura Club for all their help to make
this a great <BR>
event. Mel, Tom, and Greg for getting us those short tees and designing a
shorter course <BR>
that would get us to lunch quickly. Greg for his added help with graphics. To
all the <BR>
spotters - Kimbra and Billy, Dennis etc. thanks! Thanks to our sponsors,
Discovering <BR>
The World, Innova and Geotel. Chris Ginnaven for help organizing, Cliff Towne,
- the TD, <BR>
Beth Verish, Erin White, Pat Sweeney and Chris Horn for Disc Arcade assist etc.
and to Stu <BR>
Shulman for campfire Blues guitar. To Ranger Rob and the Casitas staff for all
their help. <BR>
Again thanks!<BR>
Now for the news. Everybody was excited at the player's meeting to hear
that DISC's <BR>
proposal for a course in Elysian Park had been approved by the park advisory
group and <BR>
that DISC had once again been asked to staff LAUSD's Summer Disc Sports
program., and <BR>
a last minute flurry of entrants helped put the event into the black (over
$700!). We had <BR>
one ace,.and it was on hole #15 the one that Geotel had $100 on! Our
farthest <BR>
traveled player Steve Ritenour of MD hit it on the 2nd round. Yee haw! -
as we say here <BR>
out west. Wally Moore and Chris Horn in Open were tied at the end of regulation
 in <BR>
standard Fling fashion we had them throw a closest-to safari shot from the
campground <BR>
to hole # 1 and Wally broke the tie, June 4th is John Babin's Birthday it
was only fitting <BR>
that his son would win Juniors and that John would break through with his first
Fling <BR>
victory in the Advanced Masters division. Happy Birthday John! Congrats also to
David <BR>
Hadder who rode his first round of 45 to a victory in the Advanced Grandmasters.
The best <BR>
round on the short course went to Pro Masters winner Paul Mihalec with a 41 and
in the <BR>
longer layout to the Open winner Wally Moore with a 43. Mini Accuracy saw
another victory <BR>
for Pat Sweeney and Disc Shuffleboard went to Alan Fridge and Howard Tan won the
<BR>
Telepathy Challenge with his mind meld with Advanced Women's winner Megan
Stroh.<BR>
Winners received one of the special run of 25 Candy Starfires and more
than a third <BR>
of the field got DTW Gift Certificates (spend these or face the dreaded curse of
gacked <BR>
putts!). Prizes worth more than $325 were distributed to Disc Arcade winners
and as <BR>
recognition gifts to the Ventura Club. Big Fun was had at the Fling IX.<BR>

sorry - revised slightly 6/8

The Ventura Disc Golf Club had a stunning piece of land along Lake Casitas to
use for
their course - elevation, vegetation and super views of the lake. It was a
perfect venue for
this year's Fling.
First off we want to thank the Ventura Club for all their help to make this a
great
event. Mel, Tom, and Greg for getting us those short tees and designing a
shorter course
that would get us to lunch quickly. Greg for his added help with graphics. To
all the
spotters - Kimbra and Billy, Dennis etc. – thanks! Thanks to our sponsors,
Discovering
The World, Innova and Geotel. Chris Ginnaven for help organizing, Cliff Towne,
- the TD,
Beth Verish, Erin White, Pat Sweeney and Chris Horn for Disc Arcade assist etc.
and to Stu
Shulman for campfire Blues guitar. To Ranger Rob and the Casitas staff for all
their help.
Again – thanks!
Now for the news. Everybody was excited at the player's meeting to hear that
DISC's
proposal for a course in Elysian Park had been approved by the park advisory
group and
that DISC had once again been asked to staff LAUSD's Summer Disc Sports
program., and
a last minute flurry of entrants helped put the event into the black (over
$700!). We had
one ace,….and it was on hole #15 – the one that Geotel had $100 on! Our
farthest
traveled player – Steve Ritenour of MD – hit it on the 2nd round. Yee haw! - as
we say here
out west. Wally Moore and Chris Horn in Open were tied at the end of regulation
– in
standard Fling fashion we had them throw a closest-to safari shot from the
campground
to hole # 1 and Wally broke the tie, June 4th is John Babin's Birthday – it was
only fitting
that his son would win Juniors and that John would break through with his first
Fling
victory in the Advanced Masters division. Happy Birthday John! Congrats also to
David
Hadder who rode his first round of 45 to a victory in the Advanced Grandmasters.
The best
round on the short course went to Pro Masters winner Paul Mihalec with a 41 and
in the
longer layout to the Open winner Wally Moore with a 43. Mini Accuracy saw
another victory
for Pat Sweeney and Disc Shuffleboard went to Alan Fridge and Howard Tan won the
Telepathy Challenge with his mind meld with Advanced Women's winner Megan Stroh.
Winners received one of the special run of 25 Candy Starfires and more than a
third
of the field got DTW Gift Certificates (spend these or face the dreaded curse of
gacked
putts!). Prizes worth more than $325 were distributed to Disc Arcade winners
and as
recognition gifts to the Ventura Club. Big Fun was had at the Fling IX.

On a different note, I strongly urge anyone who
is interested in seeing the course at Lake Casitas
stay in the ground to read the following bulletin:

IMPORTANT BULLETIN!!

There was a complaint about the course written by Patricia Baggerly of Ojai
which has forced
an emergency meeting at the Casitas Municipal Water District on tuesday June 7th
at 3pm. If we do not put forth a positive message to the board, the course as we
know
it may be in jeopardy. I have set up a Guest Book for online comments about the
positive
aspects of the sport and the course at Casitas. It is imperative that we compile
as many
positive comments as possible before the meeting takes place to show the amount
of support
for this beautiful course. Please do not let all of the positive work that has
been done by the
Ventura Disc Golf Club go by the wayside...we need your help now!

Please go sign our Guest Book and leave some positive comments about the sport
of disc golf
and/or the new course at Lake Casitas so we can show the board how much this
means to all of us
in the Disc Golf Community...please go here to sign the Guest Book.

Here is a direct link to the guest book:
http://www.guestbookcentral.com/guestbook.cfm?guestbook=35360
or it can also be found at:
http://seedlessrecords.com/understable.html
Please go sign the guest book so we can show the board that there are
alot of positive reasons to keep the course in at Lake Casitas.

See you at the Fling!

We are all set for a final week rush of entries. The Ventura Club and the Lake
Casitas
Recreation Area Staff are working to have the course in the best shape that they
can for us.

Geotel is putting up $100 for the 1st ace on #15!

Greg Koppel is willing to spot and help the event.

DISC has several irons in the fire. As we prepare for the Fling IX, we are also
readying for
the Elysian Park meeting - the committee has agreed to vote to either for or
against the
Chavez Ridge DGC that has been designed for Elysian at thier June 1st meeting.
Wish us
luck!

Also, DISC's Summer Program with LAUSD will be on again this summer. The
details have
yet to be ironed out, but here is some info:

- July 7th through August (in service training session on Sat morning June 18th
also)
- weekday afternoons
- $13 to $16 per hour
- you have to get hired on as an LAUSD employee (visit office, DOJ screening, TB
test -
these hoops need to be hopped through)
- at least 2 afternoons a week (4 or 5 hour shifts)
- 2 person teams (usually 2 or 3 schools per day)
- South Youth Services office is in Gardena and the schools are in that quadrant
(from
downtown out to the beach)

You will work with the kids and their playground coaches on basic disc skills,
covering
throws and catches, disc golf and ultimate. The culminating tournament
(probably in Sept
or Oct) will be an Ultimate tournament that will also feature Eagle - a putting
game.

Look - we have 4 years of disc sports experience with the kids and coaches of
these
specific schools and the skill level has increased amazingly each year. If you
are
interested in teaching disc sports - here is your chance. You should be able to
free up at
least two afternoons each week to participate.

Contact Cliff Towne at ctowne@... or 323-574-7678 ASAP if interested.

Get your friends to come play the Fling IX in Ventura on Sat. June 4th! Have
people call or
email me prior to sending in their entries.

Thanks, Cliff

Dear DISC members,

Here is the latest on the Elysian Course project and the Fling IX.

Elysian Course Project

- Weds evening's meeting with the Citizen's Committee to Save Elysian Park
went
well. Almost all of the members have visited the site with us for a walk-through
and I
believe that a majority of them approve of the project! We had hoped for a vote
at this
meeting (it had been promised) but several more hoops have been put up for us to
jump
through and we have been given a SOLID promise that they will vote the project
up or
down at their next meeting. Difficult as it is
to believe – they may very well give us the go ahead to install this course.

We had hoped to tell you that the course had been approved and ask for some
help
during the installation process, but now we actually need some help jumping
through one
of the new hoops. The Committee wants us to demonstrate community support,
specifically in the area immediately adjacent to the course. It is obvious that
our seeking
and securing such support will protect them from irate neighbors with more fear
than
understanding descending upon them at their next meeting with "You approved a
golf
course!!".

Given the time and effort involved in this project so far, I don't mind going
door to
door with a disc golf education and opinion gathering project (basically what is
being
asked of us). We are also recruiting neighbors in the immediate area who are
willing to
write a letter (have one already!) and/or attend the next CCSEP meeting and
speak in favor
of the course (have one already!). Good news - a local community leader is
willing to walk
the area with me. The real kicker that should guarantee us a "yes" vote at the
next
meeting would be a couple of Los Angeles locals willing to speak in support of
the course .

How can you help? If you live in the area near the park and would be willing to
either
write a letter in support or attend the CCSEP meeting and speak briefly in
support of a
course, please contact me. If you know anyone that lives in the Solano Canyon
area
(specifically those few blocks of Academy and Solano between the 110 Freeway and
the
course area), please let me know.

Sorry - we had hoped to pull this off without asking for your help, but we
could use
some assistance. If you have anyone in the area that you can hook me up with,
let me
know. I have a sample letter that can be revised. We will have any letters sent
to me to
bring to the meeting.

Fling IX at Lake Casitas Recreation Area Update

- The Ventura Club has installed the baskets on a BEAUTIFUL, exciting
course at Lake
Casitas Recreation Area (between Ventura and Ojai). The pads will be poured soon
(the
club and the Rangers are going to try to have the pads poured and dry for us by
June 3rd -
the tee areas are all flat and playable now). This is a challenging Pro level
layout – they can
be very proud of themselves for this course. They will have it set up to shorten
a few holes
to help things flow quickly for the Fling on June 4th.

- The Fling IX is not quite halfway filled, but entries have been coming in
steadlily – so be sure to get your entry in if you are playing. We have only one
more of the
Friday
night only camping spots available ($24.50 - $18 plus $6.50 booking fee) and 3
of the
two
night spots on reserve ($42.50 - $36 plus $6.50). M campground is right off the
course
with a playground and facilities – nice!

-

- The course has elevation, character and some water may be in play. Bring
comfortable footwear, some extra socks and an extra driver. Also come early if
you are coming on Sat. (it may take some time getting through the front gate).

Below find the info letter that we sent out on the event. You can download the
flyer from a
number of sources - including socaldiscgolf.org and
http://homepage.mac.com/clifftowne
(click on the download box next to Fling IX flyer).

Thanks, Cliff Towne

Dear DISC members,

We are proud to announce that this year's Fling IX will be held at the Ventura
Disc Golf
Club's new course up at the lovely Lake Casitas Recreation Area between Ventura
and Ojai
on Sat. June 4th. Once again there will be a limiton the number of players (72)
in the event.
Avoid disappointment, fill out and return the enclosed form ASAP. We will be a
PDGA*
event (C-tier points) and a So Cal Disc Golf** point event as well.

The Fling IX will be run like last year's event, with food and a cool player's
package
accompanying the fun of disc golf and Disc Arcade games. Close to a thousand
dollars in
prizes were awarded last year and the DISC club account grew by more than $600.
Our
thanks to last year's helpful and generous players, volunteers and sponsors
(Innova and
Discovering the World).

If you are interested in knowing what DISC has done for you lately, in addition
to running
the Fling VIII in 2004, we ran the Fall Jr. Discsports Program for the Los
Angeles Unified
School District's South Youth Services. We set up Ultimate and disc golf
demonstrations
and then ran an exciting season ending tournament. Pix are up at
www.discsports.org
(which links to our new Yahoo Clubs website). We are proud that our 3rd annual
Ice Bowl
In Paradise at Elysian Park on 1/29 made $934 for the Los Angeles Regional Food
Bank,
and it appears that our long running efforts to get a disc golf course installed
in Los
Angeles may finally bear fruit in Elysian Park. We are currently working with
parks,
politicians and neighborhood groups and are feeling foolishly optimistic about
this
project!

The Ice Bowl in Paradise was a DISC membership event this year (if you played,
you will
save $15 on your Fling IX entry). Restricted access to that section of the park
did not limit
our fun. Ten women played, Billy Carnaghe won the CTP and we had 15 other
players from
the Santa Maria/Santa Barbara/Ventura areas! This consistent support of DISC by
our Tri-
County players adds to the pleasure of running the Fling at the new course at
Lake Casitas
this year. Now it is our turn to drive! DISC has sponsored a basket at the new
course and
you can help too. Go to the Ventura Club's web site at: www.seedlessrecords.com/
understable.html for more info. The Lake Casitas Recreation Area web site is a
good
source for info; www.lakecasitas.info click on "price list", "camping" and
"water adventure".
Day passes are $6.50 per car. Some may prefer to show up on Friday. Campsites
run at
$18 per night (plus $6.50 reservation charge), 2nd car $10 – good facilities,
hot showers
etc. Trailers can be rented - $65 per night plus campsite fee – 2 night minimum.
The
camping area closest to the course is Mallard (we have 5 "Friday night only"
campsites
reserved there – 1st folks to contact Cliff get those). The closest RV hookup
area is Indian.
Registration will be near Tee 1 at the Coyote Boat Ramp area but lunch and Disc
Arcade
may be in Mallard. An early draft of the course map is posted with some other
DISC files
up at http://homepage.mac.com/clifftowne Check our www.discsports.org site for
updates also.

The Fling is similarly priced this year. We aim to have a fun time and raise the
same $600
or so that we have in past years. Pros – please note that the top third in each
division win
prizes or gift certificates – not cash. If you can't make it, please support our
efforts to
grow the sport (AND get a super cool collectable disc) by joining DISC
("Membership only
box on the flyer). If youarecoming and want to add to the bottom line grab some
extra
Disc Arcade vouchers. DISC donations are tax deductible as usual. Please contact
us if you
can help with our education and recreation projects, or wish to help in other
projects to
grow the sport.

Thanks so much for your support!

Dear DISC members,

It has been a while since the last DISC update. It is either that we are lazy,
or too polite to
clog your in-box, or too busy trying to get a disc golf course into Elysian Park
or some
happy combination of the above. After preparing the Elysian presentations for
Park, staff,
politicians and the CCSEP neighborhood group, I have gained new respect for the
bullet
point style of presentation. So here is the news:

-      The presentation for the Citizen's Committee to Save Elysian Park went
very well. All
6 (of 16) members that had actually visited the site with us for a walk-through
approve of
the project! The others have until the May 4th  vote to do a walk-through.
Difficult as it is
to believe – they may very well give us the go ahead to install this course!

-

-      The Ventura Club has installed the baskets on a BEAUTIFUL, exciting
course at Lake
Casitas Recreation Area (between Ventura and Ojai). The pads will be poured soon
(they
are doing World's Biggest there on May 14-15th). This is a challenging Pro level
layout –
they can be very proud of themselves for this course. We may try to shorten a

Greetings to you all. I am writing this letter with sadness to inform you that
Larry Bell who
used to be the treasurer and Vice president of So Cal Disc Golf and was one of
the original
board members when So Cal first started, has been diagnosed with cancer. He is
in need
of financial help and asked us to help sell some items of his. However, we have
decided to
raffle off his discatcher pro basket at the award ceremony for the NT event at
La Mirada.
There will be other items included in the raffle donated (An Oak Grove Inncolor
disc, and a
set of Inncolor minis from the Golden State classic last year among the items).
Tickets are
$2 each or 3 for $5 and the winner will not need to be present to win. We will
also accept
donations which will go to help Larry pay his bills. He is currently undergoing
treatment
and living with his daughter to cut costs. You can make a check made out to Tim
Selinske
or Cash and send it me (Mark Horn) at 239 Taos Rd, Altadena, Ca 91001. Be sure
to
include your name and address and I will fill out tickets for you for the
drawing. Shipping
for the items will be free if you are not present for the drawing. I want to
thank you in
advance for any participation and look forward to seeing you at the So Cal NT
event if not
sooner. Any questions, call me at 626-798-8729 or e-mail me at

Dear DISC members who were clever enough to sign up to our Yahoo group,

You are getting the advance notice about the Fling IX which will be
held this year at the new course at the Lake Casitas Recreation Area.
The Ventura Disc Golf Club’s promotional work has paid off and we are
looking forward to a great event up there.

Below find the cover letter that is going out in the mail this week
with the flyer. The pdf of the flyer is in the files section of our
Yahoo group at discsports.org

We are in the midst of the design process for a course at Elysian Park.
The current design is up at Cliff’s public file section at
http://homepage.mac.com/clifftowne  the most recent file is named
ely15feb28. Have a look and feel free to join us in playing and
refining the design. We are trying to get out there on Saturday
mornings with some Chings to set up 4 holes at a time and play them
through twice. Call Cliff at 323-574-7678 (cell) to confirm if you are
showing on Sat AM.

Dear DISC members,

We are proud to announce that this year’s Fling IX will be held at the
Ventura Disc Golf Club’s new course up at the lovely Lake Casitas
Recreation Area between Ventura and Ojai on Sat. June 4th. Once again
there will be a limiton the number of players (72) in the event. Avoid
disappointment, fill out and returnthe enclosed form ASAP. We will be a
PDGA* event (C-tier points) and have asked to be sanctioned as a So Cal
Disc Golf** point event as well.

The Fling IX will be run like last year’s event, with food and a cool
player’s package accompanying the fun of disc golf and Disc Arcade
games. Close to a thousand dollars in prizes were awarded last year and
the DISC club account grew by more than $600. Our thanks to last year’s
helpful and generous players, volunteers and sponsors (Innova and
Discovering the World).

If you are interested in knowing what DISC has done for you lately, in
addition to running the Fling VIII in 2004, we ran the Fall Jr.
Discsports Program for the Los Angeles Unified School District’s South
Youth Services. We set up Ultimate and disc golf demonstrations and
then ran an exciting season ending tournament. Pix are up at
www.discsports.org (which links to our new Yahoo Clubs website). We are
proud that our 3rd annual Ice Bowl In Paradise at Elysian Park on 1/29
made $934 for the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, and it appears that
our long running efforts to get a disc golf course installed in Los
Angeles may finally bear fruit in Elysian Park. We are currently
working with parks, politicians and neighborhood groups and are feeling
foolishly optimistic about this project!

The Ice Bowl in Paradise was a DISC membership event this year (if you
played, you will save $15 on your Fling IX entry). Restricted access to
that section of the park did not limit our fun. Ten women played, Billy
Carnaghe won the CTP and we had 15 other players from the Santa
Maria/Santa Barbara/Ventura areas! This consistent support of DISC by
our Tri-County players adds to the pleasure of running the Fling at the
new course at Lake Casitas this year. Now it is our turn to drive! DISC
has sponsored a basket at the new course and you can help too. Go to
the Ventura Club’s web site at:
www.seedlesssrecords.com/understable.html for more info. The Lake
Casitas Recreation Area web site is a good source for info;
www.lakecasitas.info click on “price list”, “camping” and “water
adventure”. Day passes are $6.50 per car. Some may prefer to show up on
Friday. Campsites run at $18 per night (plus $6.50 reservation charge),
2nd car $10 – good facilities, hot showers etc. Trailers can be rented
- $65 per night plus campsite fee – 2 night minimum. The camping area
closest to the course is Mallard (we have 5 “Friday night only”
campsites reserved there – 1st folks to contact Cliff get those). The
closest RV hookup area is Indian. Registration will be near Tee 1 at
the Coyote Boat Ramp area but lunch and Disc Arcade may be in Mallard.
An early draft of the course map is posted with some other DISC files
up at http://homepage.mac.com/clifftowne Check our www.discsports.org
site for updates also.

The Fling is similarly priced this year. We aim to have a fun time and
raise the same $600 or so that we have in past years. Pros – please
note that the top third in each division win prizes or gift
certificates – not cash. If you can’t make it, please support our
efforts to grow the sport (AND get a super cool collectable disc) by
joining DISC (“Membership only box on the flyer). If youarecoming and
want to add to the bottom line grab some extra Disc Arcade vouchers.
DISC donations are tax deductible as usual. Please contact us if you
can help with our education and recreation projects, or wish to help in
other projects to grow the sport.

Thanks so much for your support!

Discsports in Southern California ran the Ice Bowl in Paradise charity event at
lovely and exciting Elysian Park again this year. Exciting? Yes – it turned out
that way. Winners in three divisions had to break ties and several others were
decided in the last few holes. Beth Verish edged Kimbra Carnaghe to nab the
chocolate in the Open Women and the Advanced Am division ended 36 holes
with a 3-way tie that went to Lawrence Halili in the playoff. The Open division
ended with a tie at 99 between Sweeney and Crabtree. The only problem – a
silly scorecard error put a revised score of 101 on Kyle's card. The TD's
hands were tied on this – it is the correct score plus two strokes. Pat decided
to play it off with Kyle and although Mr. Sweeney will officially get his point
– I
believe Kyle Crabtree won that playoff. PLEASE – check your cards before
they get turned in.

Frank Feliz broke Chris Canning's streak and went home with the Ching.
Jesse Chambless continued Santa Maria's winning ways with his victory in
Mini Accuracy while Homer Vazira's upside down strategy paid off in Disc
Shuffleboard. Billy Carnaghe was "Closest to" which got him one of the new
2005 PDGA Course Directories while Virgil Phillips once again won
chocolate as the biggest donor to the Foodbank. The big winners were the
Los Angeles Regional Foodbank and DISC (80 members so far in 2005).

Not only did we have that super man Pat Shea on hand, but we were lucky to
once again have a great field of women play the Ice Bowl. The Tri County
area had more than 10 players drive down and we also had deaf disc golfers
Dustin Warren and Chad Leonard join us. John Babin brought his Burbank
contingent with him and long time DISC volunteer Nick Yermilov played his
first PDGA event! The field was again full and although we managed to
accommodate those who were already on the waiting list, we had to turn
down several who arrived that morning hoping to play (reminder - "avoid
disappointment, sign up early").

The work of many was apparent, but Chris Ginnaven, Homer Vazira and Cliff
Towne deserve special mention as does Jesse Williams for his help and
Peggy Kelly and the Parks staff for having the area looking so good. Thanks
also to Beth Verish, Suzette Simons, Tom LaTorre and Tita Ugalde of So Cal
Disc Golf for their help before and during the event and to all who helped lug
targets around and run Disc Arcade. Please thank our sponsors, Discovering
the World and Trader Joes. Give them the business! Also, So Cal Disc Golf
generously donated their $2 per player sanctioning fee back to the Foodbank.
Congratulations to all the participants – you have done well and mom can be
proud of you. With $931 going to the LA Regional Foodbank and the balance
in membership donations to DISC, a total of $2108 was raised! We will have
the full results posted in the "Files" section up at www.discsports.org (this
goes to our new yahoo group - please sign up to get DISC notices) and may
also be posted at www.socaldiscgolf.org Contact Cliff Towne at
coursedirectory@... if you are interested in helping DISC in our
mission to promote disc sports in the area.
